All the news for you this week in the world of Black Rock City; as the days warm up and the clock ticks down, the office buzz, as I keep mentioning, grows louder. The siren call of the desert pulls at me this week, so I’m headed out to help Metric do a little work on Guru Road (see last week’s JRS) and catch up with Maid Marian, who’s been pounding the pavement in Reno and attending important meetings.

With upcoming regional burns, theme camp meetings and fundraisers getting underway all over town, the Art application up and running, and the start of Daylight Savings, it feels like Burning Man season’s in full swing. That’s just cool, pure and simple.

A call to action for Burners in the West tops off this week’s dose of BRC news.

PUBLIC MEETINGS: BLACK ROCK DESERT NCA

The Draft Management Plan for the Black Rock Desert NCA is out, and open for public comment for 90-days ending June 16, 2003. Burning Man has worked side by side with other users to see that our interests are included in the plan. The plan has several different types of options in a variety of categories including resource protection, off road vehicle use, historic trail, wilderness areas, recreation and large scale events.

We are counting on Burning Man supporters to take part in the public comment process. For a small contribution of your time you can make a big difference. If you’ve always wanted to “help” this is your chance. You can write letters and/or attend meetings.

How do I see the Plan?

You can download the plan from the BLM-Black Rock Desert NCA website at: It downloads PDF files, and to be honest there’s a lot of information. If you wish choose chapters choose those that apply to you. The plan is also available in hard copy. Call Jamie Thompson at the Winnemucca BLM office, 775-623-1541.

PUBLIC meetings!

Additionally, the plan will be available for you to review at one of the upcoming public meetings in Sacramento and Northern Nevada. You do NOT have to read the plan before attending the meeting. The format for the meeting is as an open house informational session. BLM staffers will be there to answer questions. I’ll be there, maybe with another Burning Man staff member. Showing up, wandering around and looking at the pretty maps and saying hello to the nice people who permit our event is actually a really valuable use of your time. You get Jack Rabbit points for just showing up!

There are meetings in Winnemucca, Gerlach, Cedarville, CA, Sacramento, CA and Reno, NV. April 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25.

The Plan Is IMPORTANT!

The draft plan is very important, and if we don’t voice our opinions about what’s best our needs won’t be considered. This plan will be in place for 15-20 years and will govern how the area is managed and whether recreation activities such as Burning Man are allowed. Our interests will be covered if we comment during the “draft” stage.

Let’s do our part and be active in the management of the desert that we value so much for our event. I hope to see many Burners at the meetings.

If you’re interested in just writing a letter and not attending the meeting you’re welcome to launch out on your own. Or just stay tuned. We’ll be mobilizing letter writing shortly. Burning Man needs to review the document a little more, attend the open house, and consider what other users are saying about the draft plan before we post our position. But, again, you’re encouraged to digest and comment on your own if that’s your preference.

Announcing the 2003 Earth Guardian LNT Backpacking trip! – May 10 and 11, Black Rock Desert! This is our only in-depth training focused on the LNT principles and how they apply to Burning Man.

REGISTER YOUR ART!

It’s that time of year again – you’ve been working hard to dream up and begin work on your art installation, and now we need to hear from you! If you are creating art installations for the playa, theme related or otherwise, we ask that you fill out our online art questionnaire found here: burningman.com…new_guidelines.html
Every year the Artery Team refines the questions to make sure we receive as much information from the artists as possible. The questionnaire is preceded by our guidelines, and reading through them should answer all your questions about bringing art to Burning Man.

NEW DETAIL QUESTIONS FOR FLAMING ART
We have added more detail to our questionnaire for art that deals with fire. This year you will encounter the following sections: *

* OPEN FLAME (this includes items such as candles, torches, fire barrels or any art that is to be set on fire)

* FLAME EFFECTS (this includes all flames that are automated, switched, pressurized or having any other action than simply being lit on fire; as well as projects using propane or liquid fuels)

* PYROTECHNIC MATERIAL (definition of pyrotechnics includes any explosives, projectiles or fireworks. All pyrotechnic special effects material used in any art installation or performance must consist of Class C or less. Absolutely no Class B or higher fireworks will be permitted at any art installation at the event.)

Your questionnaires help us to map your art installation and enable us to help you with specific details of your project. In addition, we use information from the questionnaires to write descriptions for our online art installation Archives.

Thanks!
Crimson Rose

HAUL OUT A BARREL

Burner Valerie writes: “Reading the tips from Planttrees@aol.com for gearing up for the playa, I’ve noticed that I haven’t heard any mention of CalMAX, an Internet materials exchange run by the California Integrated Waste Management Board. Chock full o’ stuff like 55 gallon drums, bales of textiles, paint buckets, and all kindsa whatnot that playa people could surely make creative reuse of – whether for camping or for art or for whatever. Their inline catalog can be searched at ciwmb.ca.gov/CalMAX , and users can even search by region and/or by type of materials. Obviously it’s most convenient for CA-area folks. Hope you can find an appropriate way of sharing this resource with others if you see fit!” Thanks Valerie!

ANOTHER REMINDER: LIGHT IS THE NEW WATER

Ranger Decibel writes: “We’re going to make an effort this year to not just bring LOTS of lights… little ones, flashy ones, pretty bitty ones… but to bring about twice as many as we need (OK, 10 times what we “need”) so that we can give them away to all the benighted/unlighted folks who don’t show up with them and thus turn themselves from interesting/wonderful people into road hazards. I don’t know how many people have been injured because they ran over/into/under some unlit thing/person/pole/hole, but I know of several in my immediate circle.

It’s hard to imagine what BRC is like until you’ve been there, and even those of us who have, seem to forget in the course of our all-too-well-lit urban lives, that there are places that get dark when the sun goes down.

So, we will be bringing LOTS and LOTS of lights, and give them to whoever needs them. If everyone does this – “everyone” being anyone, of course – we will minimize pain/injury and maximize SPARKLE.

For we are the Sparkle People!

129 frickin’ days!!!! LET THERE BE LIGHTS!!!!

Much much much love, ranger and otherwise,

Ranger Decibel of the Sparkle People.”

CASTING CALL: WOODEN EXPRESSIONS A PLUS

Matisse writes: First call for two-by-fours!

Bring your tired, used, and left-over 2x4s to the Playa where we will cut them into two-foot pieces and build the Daahoud.

The Daahoud is a huge, flowing sculpture built entirely from two-foot pieces of 2×4. The hope is that people will hang things on it, hang out inside it, and generally use it as a basis for more art.

Of course, we plan to burn it.

Check it out and sign up at: matisse.net/bm/2003/daahoud

DID YOU TRUST EDWARD GIBBS’S SHORTS?

The picture requests continue to elicit more requests. Even if you don’t take pictures – it’s nice to be reading a newsletter where these are legitimate questions, yes?

1. Andrew/Trust writes: Did you meet a man named, “TRUST” on the playa 2002? I gave my business card to quite a few (25ish) camera-holding people, I haven’t heard from anybody and I’m dying to see my makeup that inspired so many photos to be taken. I don’t know what I looked like to this day. Love, Trust [Andrew]

2. Sharon writes: I read your “ISO pictures” piece in this weeks JRS and wondered if you might post my own odd ISO request… In 2000, there was a guy going around videotaping people who had to read a little script that said “My name is Edward Gibbs, and I have come to Burning Man because someone told me I could find a pair of magic shorts”. I’ve often wondered who he was (and who Edward Gibbs was, for that matter) and what happened to that tape… the end result must have been pretty hilarious. -sharon! [Sharon]
