BLM GRANTS BURNING MAN 2003 PERMIT!
We’re always happy to share this yearly news – the BLM has officially issued our permit for Burning Man 2003! Not only did we once again receive the stamp of approval, but the BLM had some very complementary things to say about the Project in the AP story on the permit. A quote:
“Monitoring and inspections have shown that Burning Man has caused no known long-term adverse effects to public lands and resources,” said Dave Cooper, conservation area manager for the BLM.
“This would be a remarkable record for any recreation permit, but is especially noteworthy in this instance since Burning Man is the largest special recreation event permitted anywhere by the Bureau of Land Management,” Cooper said.

EARLY ARRIVALS AND LAND GRABBING IN BRC
Every year we fight the tide of people who want to have their Burning Man experience start earlier and last longer. Yes, it would be wonderful if Burning Man could last more than a week… but this is not possible right now. Our permits from the BLM to occupy the site begin August 25th and end September 1st. We pay $4.00 per person per day for land use – a budgeted amount of about half a million dollars. Our ticket prices are based on this exact time frame.
If we allow anyone other than those building our city onto the site pre or post event we will be in violation of our permit and risk additional fees and fines, or possibly be denied future permits. We share the Black Rock with many other users, and we must be considerate of those that use the Black Rock beyond our event and keep our impact and presence to a minimum.
We are not prepared to host anyone until the date our event begins! We create an entire city in the month prior to August 25 and tear it down for all of September. This is hard work and takes a dedicated crew. Anyone on the site that is not contributing to this prime mission is adding work for the crew, and is using measured, costly and valuable resources. Our medical crew is not even available to you until just before our event begins. Anyone on site prior to our opening must be on a working crew, or be pre-approved and on a list at the gate and have a ticket. If you believe you will need to gain early entry please contact the appropriate organizer. If you are a theme camp, look for the theme camp announcement soliciting requests.
Early arrivals, even those coming up for the prior weekend to help, have brought on new challenges for real estate during the event, and we must attend to this. We are no longer able to tolerate any “land grabbing” pre-event. Last year much or our city was claimed long before our event began! While this is ingenious, it is not exactly fair. For those of you that are used to slipping in early, marking off real estate for your camp mates and slipping out again, you will find this nearly impossible this year. Our gate will be up earlier, and our systems will be tighter. Any land found marked off prior to our official opening will be liberated and ignored. Staff will not be able to hold land for others. All participants must take their chances at getting the location they prefer, work cooperatively with the neighbors to make everyone happy and use the resources at Playa Info in Center Camp to let their friends and family know exactly where they ended up.
Yes, there are some projects that require early entry to the site. For this reason, some ticket holders other than crew will be on site by Saturday, August 23rd. This will be the FIRST DAY that we will allow land to be marked and reserved for campers coming later.
Any land marked as reserved should be done so by means that will not puncture feet or tires, and be clearly visible both day and night. All reserved property must be occupied when it is marked, or is subject to liberation.
We can’t wait to welcome you on August 25 when the city opens!

WASHOE STAGING AREA SAGA UPDATE
All of us here are focusing our energies towards getting out to the Playa and coming home. Unfortunately, some of that energy is still being taken by the situation in Washoe County, dealing with our use of and the permits for the Ranch, which we use to set up and clean up Black Rock City. For those of you who want to keep tracking the developments in Washoe County, we’ll be updating the News Section of the website with press releases and updates on a more regular basis. There’s also a history of the situation located there, so you can get up to speed on all of the ins and outs of our trials and tribulations dealing with Nevada county politics.

VEHICLE-LESS TRAVEL TO BLACK ROCK CITY
So you’ve decided you want to go to Burning Man, but you don’t have a playa-appropriate vehicle — or perhaps ANY vehicle — or you’re flying in from far away. What’s a prospective Burner to do?
Do not despair, you’ve got a several options:
(1) Rideshare: The e-playa bulletin board for 2003 has an extensive (and sure to get larger) discussion under “Getting There – Ride Share”. There are current listings for California, the Pacific Northwest, New England, the Southeast, Southwest, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and Reno… in addition to Canada, Europe, and “other”. You might get a ride in a fabulous art vehicle, or the chance to fly in to Black Rock City Airport by plane. Think about what you’re willing to offer (pay for gas? Share driving? Bring road-goodies?), and be realistic about the amount of stuff you want to bring. Go to bbs.burningman.com…eedf910
(2) Green Tortoise: Our Gerlach/Empire shuttle partner, the Green Tortoise, offers two buses from San Francisco, leaving 8/26 and 8/28, and returning late Sunday night after the Temple burn. Tortoise passengers have access to a large central camping location, food, and drinking water. You can bring your bike for a small additional fee. Contact the Green Tortoise directly at greentortoise.com/burning.man.festival.html or call 1-800-TORTOISE. Plan ahead, as buses do typically sell out.
(3) Our pal Hageymon in Sparks, well-known for the Black Rock City Burner hostel (blackrockburnerhostel.com), also runs the Reno-to-Playa rideshare program (blackrockburnerhostel.com/rideshare.html) from his home in Sparks. If you’re looking for a lift to the playa, he’s the man who can help you out, even if it means he drives you to BRC himself! Fred’s stellar contribution to the community has provided dozens of burners with a lift “home”, and there is always a need for more volunteers to help… so if you’re going to be driving through Reno or Sparks on your way to BRC, and want to help out by offering a lift to a fellow burner, get in touch with Fred. And if you need a lift, write to him *ASAP*!! Those arriving BEFORE August 25th are easiest to accommodate. DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR VIDEO CAMERA REGISTRATION
Shooting video at Burning Man this year? Most folks know that they need to register their video cameras, but we occasionally get questions from participants about whether they should register for personal use or as a member of the media. With the deadline for submitting video proposals coming up July 15, we wanted to provide a brief overview on video registration guidelines.
First, a paragraph’s worth of background. Burning Man requires participants to register and tag their video cameras for two main reasons. First, registering and signing a personal use agreement means the camera’s owner has read, understands and signed a contract that spells out the rules for shooting video at the event. Second, having this policy in place makes it easier for the Burning Man Project to ensure that videographers do not sell their footage for some commercial use. The bottom line is that we don’t want videographers attending the event with the primary motive of making money off of other participants’ creativity.
Burning Man divides videographers into two categories – 1. those who are shooting video to show their friends and family and 2. everyone else. If you brought your camera out to shoot video for the folks back home, then all you need to do is fill out a Personal Use Agreement (you can get one at the Gate, or at one of the dropoff locations) and turn it in at Greeters, Playa Info in Center Camp, or the Ranger Outposts, and receive a tag for your camera.
If you are shooting video for any other reason than to show it to your friends and family, you need to register as media, submit a proposal to Burning Man, and be approved in advance of arriving on the playa. We occasionally get participants who tell us “My project isn’t commercial”, “I’m shooting for public access TV”, or “I’m just shooting video to display on a screen at a rave.” Each of these projects requires registration as media. Burning Man categorizes video based on who will see it, not whether the project is going to make any money.
Burning Man has prepared a “Rights & Responsibilities” page, which outlines the rights and responsibilities for videographers, artists, participants and the Burning Man Project. You can find it here: burningman.com…pressRandR.html.
If you are thinking of shooting video for any reason other than to show friends and family, the first step in the process of registering is to read through the Press Here section of the website: burningman.com/press. Once you’ve read through the press info, you can fill out the online video proposal form. A member of the media team will usually be in touch within 24 hours.
Lastly, a comment on video cameras. Burning Man defines any camera that can shoot even a few seconds of motion imagery as a video camera. The new generation of digital still cameras often now include the option of shooting a few seconds or minutes of motion imagery. If your camera can do that, it needs to be registered.

PEGORAMA ON PLAYA SHOES
We continue Pegorama of Austin’s packing tips with a final note on shoes:
I usually pack shoes separately in their own baggies. No one can tell what your shoes look like out there. Your feet and shoes will be playa-white for the duration. No reason to buy any special shoes. The shoes you take with you will likely be playa shoes forever. Make sure you are COMFORTABLE in those shoes (I think 2 pairs at a minimum.) Choose a pair in your closet that you like, find comfortable, and just can’t get rid of, even though they are scuffed and worn. Honor those shoes for all their hard work carting you around – take them to BM. Those old shoes are probably willing to sacrifice themselves to the Playa Alkali and would be honored to go with you on your adventure. I’d advise strongly against sandals of any sort, except for the occasional sun shower you’ll take out there. For reasons on why: Refer to BM website under “playa foot.” Sure, folks do it and they’re fine, sometimes, but if you like your feet, put shoes and socks and moisturizer on ’em. You’ll be able to walk further and see more stuff that way.

Before you take your old shoes to the playa, you can spray paint them so they are super-fabulous and shiny and go with some of your costumes. 🙂 (no glitter though — it tends to come off).

Many participants spend a day in Reno on either side of their visit to the desert – whether to purchase supplies beforehand, or get a good shower and night of sleep in before getting on the plane home. ANOTHER BIKE “FIX”
Oh, yes, we’re back yet again, shaking our best bike booties to make sure you’re up-to-speed on wheeling and dealing in the desert. This time we’re raving about REPAIR KITS. Since anything can happen on the playa, we thought we’d recommend a few must-haves to keep you bike-healthy-wealthy-and-wise:
– A patch kit. We doubt you’ll want to fall flat in the desert. Patch kits are inexpensive and easy to come by. Check your favorite bike store or Target-like entity.
– A pump. Make sure someone in your camp has one for the group to share.
– An extra chain, just in case. Playa dust can be ruthless when it comes to moving parts. If you MUST use chain oil, a light coating of WD-40 should do it. Spray carefully, using a carpet under the bike, so you don’t spoil the playa with petroleum products.
– An extra tube, ideally two, and an extra tire would be great. If you end up not needing it, you’ll probably meet someone who does–and s/he will love ya for it!

SHRINE ON YOU CRAZY LAMPLIGHTER
Citizens of Black Rock City!
2003 marks the 10 year anniversary of the Lamplighters.
10 years ago, 25 lanterns were placed on the ground to illuminate the road to the man.
Today, nearly 1000 lanterns light miles of roads in Black Rock City, high atop our elegant spires, with nearly 125 volunteers a day needed to accomplish that task. We invite you to join us any evening of the event, around 5pm, to take part in this, one of the noblest traditions at Burning Man.
2003 also marks a new workspace in Center Camp. A beautiful and massive chapel… downtown… where each evening, all are welcome to enjoy… The Lamplighters Shrine
The Lamplighters Shrine is an open-invitation large-scale shrine inspired by the ‘Beyond Belief’ theme. We invite all citizens, Lamplighters and others, to bring an object or two to add to this sacred installation. With your help, 10’s of thousands of people will enjoy this incredible space.
In addition to considerable floor space and the elevated shrine(s), lightweight objects can be hung from the ceiling, helping the shrine expand in all dimensions. We’ll handle the lighting…. glowing lanterns, of course….
All offerings are gracefully accepted. The more the merrier, the more incredible, and the more revealing.
Be attentive that some objects (like live flowers) can create MOOP, which we need to avoid…

DIY PLAYA PORCH LIGHTING
It’s gonna be a new moon on the playa this year, you’re gonna need lights to find your way home, but plain Christmas lights are so pre2k. Try this simple cheap way to spice up your homecoming: take a string of Christmas lights (white works best). Then go to your local film developing shop, like at a supermarket. Ask them for used clear film canisters–they’ll be happy to hand over all you want. Make a small slit in one end, and push the bulb into the canister. Then plug the string into an inverter, and then into a deep cell battery, which will run for ages and is easily recharged from your standard car battery (note–using a regular battery will only kill it, and then you’ve got to lug the jump home.) Plug it in when you’re heading out for the night and hey presto: you’ll have soft, welcoming lights to greet you when you finally drag your ass back to camp. If you’re really clever, you’ll rig some sort of photovoltaic switch to turn them automatically at dusk. Cheap, clever, and it works–what’s not to like?

ON THE ZIPLOC THREAD
Sure, we spent last week publishing advice from a burner who uses zipper top bags to keep things clean. This week we publish advice saying zipper bags are wasteful. There is no official party line here, folks – make your own decision, as long as you PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT and LEAVE NO TRACE!
Tiffany Lee Brown writes: We Burners might like to think of ourselves as the height of environmental consciousness, but of course we actually waste all kinds of resources in order to do our thing every year. Some ways to minimize your damage:
– if you will be camping near a van or car, park it at an angle to the primary winds. Sure, the winds do whatever they want, but they come in most consistently from the same angle where the entrance to BRC is. Park so that you can keep your big plastic tub or duffel bag full of costuming items near a door that’s opposite to the wind. Problem solved. No extra petroleum products required.
– minimize baggie style packing. Instead, get a little dust on some of your clothes, which, let’s face it, will be covered in Playa dust within minutes of coming out of the expensive baggie product.
– and/or: retain all your Ziplocs and use them year after year. When you get home and wash all your other stuff, just rinse off the dust and clip them to a clothesline or dump them in the tub ’til they dry. (Do this with your everyday baggies and veggie baggies from the grocery store, too — it really isn’t that much of a pain in the ass.)
-some things I’ve personally used on the playa that really need their own zip top bag: latex gloves within First Aid kit; burn dressing within First Aid Kit; ace bandages in First Aid kit.

The Burning Man Video Documentation Team needs post-production equipment ASAP. We have a range of footage that needs to be processed before we go back to work on the playa this year. Please help us reach our goals by donating or loaning the equipment you have cluttering up your office and storage unit!
We need:
1 Super VHS deck- semi pro quality with jog shuttle transport like the Sony SLVR100
1 Computer with DSL internet capabilities- we prefer PC’s so it can communicate smoothly with the network set up but wouldn’t reject a Mac, especially a dual 800mhz G4 with an array of over 100 gigs of RAM.
1 Mini DV player/recorder

OAKLAND FLAMBÉ LOUNGE WRAP-UP + CRUCIBLE PYROMANIA WEEKEND, JULY 12-13
The June 28th Flambé Lounge held at The Crucible in Oakland was an amazing testament to art and community. Over 1900 artists, performers, theme camps, volunteers and participants from across the country filled The Crucible with art, performance, info tables, interactive theme camps, and plans for the playa. The event benefited artists, who found enthusiastic volunteers and collaborators for playa projects; it helped people prepare for the playa and think in advance what the “Beyond Belief” theme means to them; it provided funds to help build out The Crucible and to make people aware of it as a valuable Bay Area artist resource; and it was an incredible reminder of what makes our increasingly YEAR-ROUND community so incredible!!! THANK YOU! to everyone who contributed.

This is a rare chance to see The Crucible’s full program of industrial arts in action, and to pick up a hammer and try a bit yourself. Stroll the 47,000 square foot studio and watch artists and artisans weld, cut and form metal, work glass, fire clay, and bend neon tube. Expert faculty and artists will be on hand to share tips and techniques and to answer questions about upcoming Summer Classes. Want to explore more? Here’s the opportunity you’ve been waiting for to get a serious taste of propane as you take an intensive 3-hour introductory class in blacksmithing, welding, neon, ceramic raku, jewelry or glass. Faculty and instructors will show you how to safely heat and shape iron, cut and weld metal, bend neon tube, fuse molten glass and get creative with jewelry and metalsmithing. All workshops will be offered in both the morning and the afternoon, so you can stay all day and sign up for two, or just check out that one area you’ve always wanted to learn.
