Howdy again!
173 days until Burning Man, and we’re picking up the effort to get the JRS back on that weekly schedule you know and love, since – holy moley! – it seems like the season is suddenly in full swing. Don’t know what the weather’s doing where you are (we hear it snowed in NYC this weekend?) but spring’s begun nipping at our heels in San Francisco, and the creeping mercury has set us to thinking about heading to the park to practice on our shade structures and tallbikes, and start our playa plans in earnest…but meantime, we tend to check out the calendar regularly for a chance to attend a regional event this spring! All at once, our inbox is filled with requested JRS announcements, and we’re only too happy to oblige so you can get in on the fun.

For example, this Rabbit spent a few minutes on Thursday talking to our friend Grover, who, along with the Arizona burn group, is busy gearing up for this year’s TOAST! regional burn. Yes, you still have a chance to get your tickets to this fantastic regional event (4/28-5/01), and head out to enjoy a vibe which, we’re told, hearkens back to the early days of Burning Man in its remote, desert-bound magic. We at JRS can certainly vouch for the fine company of the folks in the Arizona Burning Man crowd, and we highly encourage you to check out http://toast-town.org/ and get your tickets now! Truth is, one could make a full circuit traveling all the Spring regional events – we’ve also got announcements from Hawaii, Vancouver, California, the Midwest (home sweet Missouri, here I come) AND Arizona. We know we’ll have even more announcements as the spring continues to spring. Even with those events, we notice, we’ve started to feel that other pull – yep, it’s time to get crackin’ on those playa plans! And so, this JRS, we’re thrilled to bring you all kinds of BRC NEWS: the list of the 2005 Burning Man Theme Art Grant recipients, for starters, along with the launch of the questionnaires for Theme Camps, Art Installations, and Mutant/Handicapped Vehicles! Plus, a little bird (okay, the Ticket folks) told us that our $225 tickets are going fast. With only a few left, you’ll want to scroll down and hit that link, if you haven’t yet purchased yours for Burning Man 2005. And of course, it’s never too early to announce your playa event to ensure it gets printed in the WhatWhereWhen – the deadline comes up fast for the print version of the event calendar, so be sure to read the submission guidelines below and get it in as soon as you have your details squared away!

This week’s PARTICIPATE! is also full of some playa-prep news. To wit: no matter if you eat only energy bars and cup-o-noodles on the playa, you’ll still want to consider including cooking oil in your packing list. Huh? Why, to smear on your rental truck, of course! (You’ll have to read it to see what we mean.) And there’s no time like the present to visit useful websites where you can obtain free (or swapped) recycled materials for your camp or project! Then, lock that bathroom door to practice your beauty-queen waves in the mirror for the Miss Black Rock City pageant (it’s “elbow-elbow-wrist-wrist-wrist”, right?) And, well, we don’t mean to *encourage* the need for ashtrays, but if you must light up, you of course know NOT to throw those butts on the playa – a participant writes with another good suggestion for a playa ashtray.

Anyone else out there thinkin’ that this is gonna be a stellar year? Yeah, us too.

(FYI and for what it’s worth: we’ve done what we know how to do with the formatting problems in the JRS, and we do apologize profusely to those who are experiencing ugly problems. BURNING MAN THEME ART GRANTS ANNOUNCED FOR 2005
The Art Department is pleased to announce the 2005 art honorariums. We received 140 proposals, nearly twice last year’s 80 submissions, and we had a hard time funding everything we admired, despite our increased budget. In the end, we selected 30 projects – including 18 large scale installations, 9 fire pieces, 3 light art projects, and 3 mobile art projects. Five of these installations will burn. Some additional grants will be given to projects under consideration for the Funhouse, on which the man will stand this year. Those will be announced shortly.

The grant committee consists of Larry Harvey, Crimson Rose, LadyBee, Beth Scarborough – artist advocate for the Art Department – and Mark Van Proyen – art critic and instructor at the San Francisco Art Institute. We are very pleased with the volume and quality of the proposals, and we thank everyone who submitted a proposal.

GET YOUR EVENTS IN EARLY FOR THE WHATWHEREWHEN

You heard it here first! The fabulous, friendly and fearless team that brings you the WhatWhereWhen (the indispensable little gate handout that’s overflowing with the list of events and happenings in BRC) is ready for your submissions!

“How do I get my playa event into the WhatWhereWhen?” you may be wondering. Well, it’s easy! The submissions received for the online Playa Calendar get exported, massaged, proofread, printed and then eventually stuffed into a box, where they magically appear in your hands as you enter the gates of Black Rock City! =46rom pixels to paper, just like that! So, if you’d like your fabulous playa event listed, take a moment to submit your entry as SOON as you can – the deadline comes up fast (usually mid-July) because the publication takes so long to print. We’ve also got to have time to get back to you if there’s a problem… plus it’s a real drag to have to go over them all at once. We will put out another announcement later in the year when we approach the cutoff date. You will always be able to add new entries, right up to the event, but only entries received before the mid-July cutoff date will make it into the printed guide.

Please take note of the AM/PM selector next to the time! Every year we get people who submit an event and then email us right away to say that they entered “AM” instead of “PM” and need their event changed! Unfortunately, you can’t go edit your own entries ( a few folks actually meddled with other people’s entries, unfortunately) so please take care and try to have the details of your event ironed out in advance.

BORG2 UPDATE
BORG2 moves forward with an experimental project designed to demonstrate a radically collaborative community process to fund and curate public works of art at Burning Man 2005. The Experiment: http://www.borg2.org/mission.php3

The BORG2 Art Council was elected through an on-line voting process and is committed to community involvement and open source information. The Art Council: http://www.borg2.org/council.php3

The BORG2 Art Council has met with Burning Man Project (JRS note: yep, that’s “Project” not “BORG”, for what it’s worth) organizers Larry Harvey and Marian Goodell, and both organizations have expressed a willingness to lend a helping hand, work together and cooperate in order to achieve a common goal of art and community. BORG2 is now raising funds through many channels and has secured Somarts Cultural Center as their fiscal sponsor for tax-deductible donations. Members of our community are planning fundraisers across the country to support the ART and ARTISTS of Burning Man. On March 18th, BORG2 will launch it’s program with an initial “Pile O’ Pennies” art grant of $1,000. Deadline for art proposals for this grant is March 16. If you would like to vote in the art selection process for this grant, please sign up before the deadline. Larger grants are also available. COVERING RENTAL VAN LOGOS – DARN GOOD IDEA FROM THE KITCHEN

Arthur pointed out: “Since you mentioned vehicle logos, last year I demonstrated an easy way to cover RV logos without damage using a $2 spray can of olive oil followed by liberal application of playa dust. If (someone) had olive oil in 1 gallon pump sprayers they could wipe out every rental truck logo right at the gate. Fully organic, washes right off, etc.”

TWO GREAT SITES FOR THE FREE EXCHANGE OF “STUFF”

Who says that building your project has to cost a fortune or consume unnecessary resources, anyway? What about a theme camp or interactive artwork made entirely out of free or donated stuff? We know a lot of us already plan around these lines, and it’s a great way to recycle… well, here are a few ways to expand your available resource pool!

We were urged by a fella named TC3 to remind everyone about http://www.freecycle.org – you can join a Freecycle community in your area and… well, in their words: “When you want to find a new home for something — whether it’s a chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door — you simply send an e-mail offering it to members of your Freecycle(TM) group.

Or, maybe you’re looking to acquire something yourself. Simply respond to a member’s offer, and you just might get it. After that, it’s up to the giver to decide who receives the gift and to set up a pickup time for passing on the treasure.

One main rule: Everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.”

Craigslist.org always has a “Free” link for stuff being given away in your area… http://www.craigslist.org

MISS BLACK ROCK CITY PAGEANT – BEAUTY IS AS BEAUTY DOES

Hello Citizens of Black Rock!
2004 was the premiere year for the Miss Black Rock City Project, and what a year it was! We produced four events: The Sash Making Workshop, the Miss Illumination 2004 Special Event, and of course the Miss Black Rock City 2004 Preliminaries and Main Event.

I am so impressed by the dedication of all of the contestants – they all ‘got it’ and seemed to be having such a great time, as I know I was! This process has always been about them: the regions, installations, theme camps, projects and/or independent spirits they represent. The Miss Black Rock City 2004 main event had finalists from New York, Southern and Northern California, Virginia, Texas, Reno, Chicago, Toronto – and more!

In response to the call for Altoid-like tins for playa ashtrays….Heather responds to Playapatsy:
“Film containers are better because they are air tight and won’t leak ashes everywhere. You’d think they would melt, but put the lit butt in the container, snap on the lid, and shake hard. That’s what I used last year on the playa, and it worked like a charm! Plus, they’d be cheaper to ship to you ;)”

Whatever it takes, just don’t let it hit the ground….

New York’s National Arts Club will host an exhibition of photographs of the Burning Man arts festival by NYC-based photojournalist Gabe Kirchheimer, running from March 8-26 with an opening reception March 14. Kirchheimer’s BM photographs have been featured in Artforum, the NY Times, Rolling Stone, the London Times, Domus and many other publications. This show will mark the first time that a large selection of his oversize pictures will be displayed for an extended period in New York. Kirchheimer’s one-night show at 20 Greene Gallery last December was highlighted by the NY Times’ Arts and Leisure section, which published “Tea With Ken,” a photograph taken at Burning Man 2003.

The show is open to the public beginning March 8.
