Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 11, Issue 14 BRC
July 23, 2007

unsub Info at the bottom

IF YOU SENT A POST you don’t see here, it may be being held for tomorrow’s second round of JRS love – we had to break this draft in two just to make it all squeeze through the pipeline.  Talk about a lot of news!

We would really love to be sending you this newsletter a lot more often.  Cabe (he of the assistant rabbit-ness and the dashing good looks) has hopped up to help again for the summer, so we’ll hope not to take quite so long between issues (heck, another one tomorrow, right?) This Green Man is keeping us all — including you, it’s clear — up to our necks in new projects, proposals, ideas, people to talk to, meetings to attend, things to build, and spreadsheets to fill out.  Seriously?  You guys out there are blowing us away with all your ideas.

The Desert Arts Preview last week at BMHQ was a packed house; artist after artist presented details about their projects for this year, to the oohs and ahhs of many a delighted participant in the audience….it’s really going to be a gorgeous and highly stimulating year for art! (Big surprise; you artist types do this to us every year, and you’ve REALLY keyed on the Green Man theme with 184 projects registered this year! – more about some of those things tomorrow…) The audience also heard a description of the donation of solar power that will be installed the town of Gerlach as a direct offshoot of this year’s Pavilion Exposition project – the work of a few creative staffers and burners who worked to find a way for donated solar panels to turn into free alternative energy for our neighbors in the desert for the next 20 years.  Wild applause all around…pretty freakin’ hard to argue with that.

News, news..  don’t miss the info about the two new ICE locations this year on the playa and some great volunteer opportunities…info about EARLY ARRIVALS IN BRC (don’t, basically) and a fresh update of BURNING MAN IN THE NEWS…the PARTICIPATE section is so chock full of fun ways to volunteer with or contribute to or be a part of a project, we saved some of it for tomorrow’s Green Man edition just so you could process it all and make up your mind…and of course the NO SPECTATORS WEEKEND info coming up this weekend is going to be a major blast! (May we suggest that if you cannot be in San Franfreakshow this weekend, you kick start a similar event on your own Main Street?  Grab some pots and pans and the nearest friend and voila – it’s a No Spectators parade.)

Stand by for tomorrow and a look at a lot MORE JRSness for your hungry mind!

VOLUNTEER OPS: COOL OFF WITH THE ICE TEAM

Arctica Ice! Now with THRICE the ICE! THRICE the VOLUNTEERS!

Arctica’s ice service is expanding its chilly embrace on the playa and we need more volunteers THAN EVER!

The people have spoken and your Ice Queen has listened.  This year Arctica will keep it’s home at center camp, where it has always been, but we will have TWO brand new outposts:

The 9’clock Plaza will now house Ice-9 for all you big camps out on the poles. The 3 o’clock Plaza will now house Ice3 (yup, that’d be ice “cubed”).  All 3 locations will carry both cubed and block ice for your cooling needs.

The extra ice stations means that we need extra frosty goodness in the form of NEW VOLUNTEERS! We need them more than ever and what better way to channel your inner Eskimo than to come over to the chillest spots on playa! We need cashiers, slingers and haulers! You want to help decorate?  Tear down?  We need you too! All you have to do is fill out a volunteer questionnaire here ( http://www.burningman.com/participate/ice.html)

If you are in the Bay Area even better! Make-Out Queen is heading up special decor sections for the new Ice stations and she needs your help to do it! Email her at makeoutqueen (at) burningman (dot) com (dude, you wish this was your email address, don’t you?  I do.  – AG) to let her know how you might be able to help.

It’s a big playa and an even bigger job to ice-up the citizens of BRC.  We are counting on YOU to help!! SO DO IT! You know you want to – working with Ice and Make-Out Queen insures that they won’t challenge you to a Thunderdome match! Or maybe they will – if you think you can handle them!

VOLUNTEER OPS: CENTER CAMP IS WHERE IT’S AT

Remember wandering into Center Camp and seeing that vision of togetherness and beauty and fun and connection that is the Cafe??  Ever wondered just how to go about becoming a part of that saucy, sparkly scene??  Or have you just been thinking about participating, but don’t quite know where?

All those happy shiny people that caffeinate and entertain the masses 24/7 behind the Cafe Counter at the event are volunteers–just like you–who know how to get things done and have a blast while doing ’em! We need baristas (with experience), cashiers, runners and people who are excited about our greening process and are willing to personally create a system where things get composted and recycled and handled in just the best way possible for all of us.

Shifts are 4 hours long, and start at 3, 7, and 11, both AM and PM and you can sign up for as few or as many as you’d like!

By filling out the volunteer questionnaire (http://www.burningman.com/participate/questionnaire.html) your info, experience, and interests will get zapped directly to the person who can hook you up with the on-playa volunteer opportunity of your dreams.

You may also email Firefly, our coffee shop schedulatrix, directly at firefly (at) burningman (dot) com

OR…BUILD THE Center Camp Cafe

We are looking for a special breed of volunteers who have an affinity for ambiance, a devotion to decor and concupiscence for coffee: to organize, administrate, plan and generally geek out on the exciting world of Detailed Project Management in the CAFE.

The Cafe Team is a complex group of specialized volunteers doing every thing from building, rigging, painting and electrical installation to sewing, technical sound operation and coffee making.  There are a few of us who administrate all of that and we need your creative skills to help facilitate specific projects.  You may be the organized type of person who has experience leading teams of people on a multi-faceted event or project.  Or you may have specialized skills in keeping track of large picture time-lines and multiple dependencies of large projects.

Pre-Playa Planning: Specifically this requires San Francisco Bay Area based volunteers to assist in facilitation of meetings, preparing documents used on playa and time line documentation for all the individual sub teams of the Cafe, ie., : Sound team, Decor team, Lighting team, Coffee shop team, Art team.

On-Playa Volunteers:
We are in need of well organized and motivated volunteers who can keep track of large scale projects and all their details.  We also have volunteer roles for leading specific projects on each sub team and assisting the sub team managers.

If you are able to spend time on the playa either pre-event or post-event and all of the above opportunities interest you please contactmarie (at) burningman (dot) com for information on the Cafe documentation team, art team, sound team, lighting team or decor team needs.

AND…ARTISTS SOUGHT FOR CENTER CAMP CAFE

Center Camp Cafe is looking for artists! Muralists are needed at the end of set-up week to contribute to our Fence Gallery.  This is the 200 ft long fence that runs behind the Cafe.  We are also looking for existing artwork that we will help you hang to beautify that big back fence.

Interested?  Please contact our artist liaison, Ferocious Pixie, at badpixie (at) burningman (dot) com with some example of your work to get things going.

Remember: Center Camp Cafe starts caffeinating the BRC community on the first day of the event (Monday, August 27) at 7:00 am.  All artwork associated with the Cafe MUST be completed/installed by that time.

NO EARLY ARRIVALS IN BRC – NO, REALLY

Black Rock City opens on Monday, August 27th at 12:01 AM.  DO NOT COME TO THE EVENT SITE BEFORE THAT TIME.  We are not ready to receive participants before the event begins because we haven’t finished building the city, nor do we have our full public safety and sanitation infrastructure in place.  By order of the BLM stipulations, those on site before the event starts must be part of the permitted set-up process.  Early arrival passes will be issued to a limited number of artists and theme camp construction crews, at our discretion.  Pass holders must have an admission ticket as well, for entry.  Do not arrive at our Gate early without a ticket and pass.  You will not be given early admission, and you risk placing needless stress on neighboring communities.

AFTER DARK ARRIVALS If you arrive in our city at night and do not know where to camp, we recommend you stay at the Greeter Station until morning.  You will NOT find your friends by cruising, are likely to inadvertently camp in a reserved space, and you may create a hazard for others.  You can get information and find your way more safely by the light of day.

*/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/*

PROMOTE YOUR PARTICIPATION ON-AIR WITH BMIR 94.5 FM

The playa beckons again, and BMIR 94.5 FM wants to publicize your artistic endeavors and theme camp shenanigans to the entire Black Rock City community throughout the week.  So crank up that home studio, record those MP3 spots, and send them to bmir (at) burningman (dot) com to secure a spot in the station’s rotation.

This year, we’re also seeking MP3 recordings of your efforts to green both your corner of Black Rock City and your corner of the world beyond the trash fence.  Whether it’s practical advice or poetic musings, the words and wisdom of Black Rock citizens constitute some of our culture’s best and brightest efforts at preserving our environment; we look forward to sharing your insight with the entire playa–as well as with the wider world post-event.

To ensure easy airplay accomodation, hit us with your noise by Sunday, August 19.  We’ll be on-playa after that, and email receptivity might be inconsistent, so beyond this date you’ll need to email your spots AND drop by the station during the week to hand-deliver them on CD.  As usual, we can record you at our our studios from noon to 4pm each day of the event…but we encourage you to produce your own pieces if you have the resources to do so, as on-site production tends to be of the down and dusty variety.

Thanks in advance for your participation.  And, as always, it’s a pleasure to serve YOU: the world’s most amazing cadre of radical, celebratory self-expressionists living in the middle of one of North America’s harshest environments for seven days, thereby creating the single greatest people-produced miracle ever to grace the face of planet Earth.  See you Out There…

THE RAFFLE – CAPTAIN O’ THE CAROUSEL

From the A Cavallo folks: “You and your posse run the ship! Take the helm and do what you will – throw a birthday party, have a formal dinner, gather a captive audience for your band or performance, or take a very special date to the most remote part of the playa.  We’ll pick you up in style, indulge your desires, and deliver you to the address of your choice.  The crew is included of course, and will be on hand to assist in your mini-fantasy.

We’re doing two of these – one open to everybody, and one for New Yorkers, who’ve been so supportive here at home.  Drawings will be held August 15th, at 10PM EST and winners announced that evening at Happy Hour, the weekly regional gathering.

Go to http://www.acavallo.org (site’s been updated and looks awesome) and click on The Raffle.

Thanks for your support, and can’t wait to play with you all!”

LETTERS TO THE TEMPLE

“Love Letters is a Temple memorial project dedicated to those whose lives were tragically lost to suicide.  This book contains letters, poems and photos submitted by the survivors left behind, that speaks to or about the loved ones they have lost.  It is our chance to reach outside our grief in an attempt to heal, honor and bestow hope.  Our stories describe the pain and hopelessness of depression, and the severity and tragedy of suicide.  By reading our stories I hope to plant seeds of compassion that will develop into a commitment to understanding depression and suicide, and to finding a solution.

If you would like to contribute a letter, photo or poem that will be compiled into this book of LOVE LETTERS and placed at the Temples center altar, please contact me at:

HELP BUILD A SCALE MODEL OF BRC

“Calling all modelers!

Show off your skills with miniatures by helping to build Mini-BRC.

What: We are looking for models of current or past Black Rock City structures, including the Man, Temples, large scale art, camps, etc.  If you have a prototype for a future large scale art project, that would also be great.

Where: In front of Snowflake Village, tentatively on the Esplanade.

When: We should have the fenced in area set up by Wed.

Logistics: There will be a roughly 400 sq foot area next to the village snowflake sign that has been fenced off and lit.  There will be no burn platform! After the Burn please remove your miniatures.  Sadly, we cannot accept gifts due to lack of space in our trucks (we’re from the midwest and east, remember!) Please secure your models! We don’t want your handiwork becoming MOOP!

The layout will be similar to BRC, but since we may get several ‘Burning Men’, ‘Temples’, etc it won’t be an exact replica.

Please limit the height to about 2 feet to keep the scale of all the structures about the same.”

THE 48 HOUR FILM PROJECT RETURNS TO BURNING MAN

“For the third year in a row, the 48 Hour Film Project will be at Burning Man!

Meet strangers and gather friends to make fiction films–write, shoot, and edit them–on the playa.  Then a huge audience will gather to watch the films.

So bring a video camera to the playa! Bring a computer! Come create film art, and tell a story in the celluloid medium, spin yarns instead of fire, participate and collaborate with their films.

We’ll also need:
– kind-hearted souls, to lend cameras and editing equipment to the effort
– editors, preferably with equipment, to help the filmmakers finish their films before the showing

Check out our website: http://www.48hourfilm.com/blackrockcity

And email us with any questions: blackrockcity (at) 48hourfilm (dot) com

See your bad filmmaking self on the playa!”

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW ON THE PLAYA!

“That’s right, for the third year in a row the 6 Minute players will be putting on a live shadow cast performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.  We started at Videogasm in 2005 and we are back performing with them again in 2007 helping them celebrate their 10th year on the playa. We put the show on Friday at midnight, so anyone who needs a Rocky Horror fix put your fishnets on and come on down to Videogasm in Snowflake Village.

In the mean time I am writing you now because we need some new cast.  If you have ever performed with a Rocky cast before, or just wanted to, drop me an email.  It requires minimal time, a few emails before playa and a 1/2 hour before the show.  That’s why we are called the 6 minute players! We always have a great time and have a great audience watching us.

IF you want to see video from 05 goto : http://www.westernmassburners.org/bmrhps2005.html

BLACK ROCK BEACON CALLS FOR SUPPORT

“Greetings Burners,

The Black Rock Beacon is gearing up for our third year on the Playa, serving up a tasty mix of news, views and pork-related trivia.  We’re looking for a few good Burners to round out our staff, and a LOT of Burners to participate in our fundraising raffle for a one-year membership to the Bacon of the Month club.

We need reporters and editors to create content for our website (http://www.blackrockbeacon.org) and the five or six issues of our newspaper that we’ll produce on the playa.  We also need a few production people who know InDesign to give us a hand with laying out the paper, and some printer’s devils to run our on-Playa press.  See our website for in-depth descriptions of what we are looking for and how to join, or visit us on Tribe.net at http://theblackrockbeacon.tribe.net/ and say hi.

If you liked our previous efforts and want to help us get the paper to everybody in Black Rock City who would like to receive it, please consider making a small donation.  For every $10 you pony up, you’ll get a chance to win a one-year membership in the Bacon of the Month club, which will deliver 12 pounds of artisanal bacon to your doorstep over the coming year.  (They only deliver in the United States, but it makes a great gift if you live overseas).

The Black Rock Beacon is a not-for-profit organization that is not affiliated with Burning Man.  We rely on donations to finance our operations, and the more we raise, the more copies of the paper we can print. Weire looking forward to serving you on the Playa in 2007 and beyond.

Lux.  Veritas.  Lardum.”

OPERATION: SHOCK & AWWWW

“Since 2005 Love Army has been enlisting soldiers and sending them out on missions of the heart.  We’ve won many a battle, but the war is far from over.  So this year, we’re launching an all-out offensive.  What’s it about?  Love.  Should you join us?  Hells yeah!

Pre-Playa Prep
Soldiers should be in the Love Army uniform, which is green & pink, camouflage & hearts.  Chances are you’re crafting a theme-based green costume anyhow, so just pink it up a bit 🙂

Staging Area
We will meet at Tall Grass at 11PM on Friday August 31st.

March to Victory
You will receive your mission and any necessary munitions.  Then, for one glorious hour, we will ATTACK Black Rock with a barrage of hugs, kisses and so much more.  It will be lovely chaos.  That is why we shall prevail.

“We want your panties!

Panty Camp needs your panties!!! Panty Camp is on its fourth year of providing the citizens of Black Rock City with clean undies.  Last year we gave away nearly 100 lbs of panties (that’s around 1000 pairs, if you’re wondering).  We rely on donations to run our camp, and, once again, we find ourselves running low in our panty supply…  so send us your panties!

But wait; there’s something in it for you…

Send us 6 or more panties and we’ll send you one back with ‘The Man’, wearing a pair of panties, of course, printed on the butt!
