Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 12, Issue #20
July 29, 2008

So, have you started digging out your playafied gear yet? Got your list together? We’re getting ready around here. Survival Guides have been sent out, the first of the DPW crew have moved to Nevada, and the Gerlach office is gearing up for the high season. Teams are mapping out locations for art installations and theme camps, and reviewing Mutant Vehicle applications. The Man is built, and resting comfortably (curing, you could say) at Black Rock Station, awaiting its ride to Black Rock City. In case you missed it, Aaron Muszalski of the Man Krew maintained quite the entertaining blog tracking this year’s Man build … check it:

http://blog.burningman.com/?cat=31

And as if to get us ready, this last weekend was “No Spectators Weekend” in San Francisco (as officially decreed 10 years ago by then- Mayor Willie Brown). Plenty of activities were held during this auspicious weekend, from costume swaps to story-telling events, artistic tromps through unsuspecting neighborhoods and bike prep potlucks. And why should this be limited to SF? Right, it shouldn’t. Get some friends together and manifest some of the same where you live! After all, life is not a spectator sport. Get the details here:

As we get closer to the playa, we’ve got some important news (particularly about not getting stung by ticket fraud), participation opportunities for you to peruse, and a final fundraising push from the hardworking Basura Sagrada crew, creating this year’s temple … please help them if you can!

The Man burns in just 32 days, folks. Can you feel it yet? OK, try this: the Golden Spike, the point from which all of Black Rock City is surveyed and laid out, gets pounded into the playa floor this Thursday. Now can you feel it? Yeah you can.

BURNING MAN SURVIVAL GUIDE: ON ITS WAY TO YOU AND YOU AND YOU!

Hey guess what … at this very moment, the official 2008 Burning Man Survival Guide is speeding its way to the mailbox of each and every Burning Man ticket-holder. But if you can’t wait, or for some perverse reason prefer reading a digital version, you can access it on our website, and even download it as a PDF. Don’t believe it? Well, see for yourself: http://tinyurl.com/7wrzo

However you get at it, it’s mandatory reading for all Burning Man participants — regardless of whether you’re a squeaky clean virgin or a multi-year veteran Burner. For reals. There’s new information every year, and if we’re going to build a city together, we all need to be on the same page. Right? Right.

(Big shout out to our Survival Guide design, production and distribution teams for making this beautiful and invaluable piece of literature happen.)

WARNING! BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR BURNING MAN TICKET FRAUD

Our ticket ladies have some valuable info for ya … take heed, ticket buyers! Say they:

“We have had several reports of counterfeit tickets being sold on eBay. If you or someone you know are considering buying a ticket from a third party please verify its authenticity BEFORE you buy it.

Here’s how: ask the seller for the 5 digit serial number, the 8 character unique alpha-numeric code, and the name and/or email address of the original purchaser. Email this information to partiserv (at) burningman (dot) com and we will look up the ticket info in our database to see if it matches our records. Anyone who is selling a legitimate ticket and not trying to scam you will have no problem providing this information.

Be careful so you don’t get stuck at the gate with a fake ticket!”

DONATE TO THE TEMPLE – BASURA SAGRADA

Wisteria of the Basura Sagrada crew is heading up a last, critical fundraising push to support the construction of this year’s temple at Burning Man. Folks, this incredible project is only possible through the collective efforts of our entire community, and this crew has been working extremely hard to make it a reality. Please do what you can to help them succeed! Wisteria writes:

“You’ve donated your trash, you’ve donated your time! Now it’s time to throw down that final infusion of cash! Please visit http://tinyurl.com/6bvgfb to make your tax-deductible donation to the temple!

This year’s temple project – Basura Sagrada (http://www.basurasagrada.org ) – is, more than ever, a true community effort – a temple, of and by the people … and we need your help to get us out there! By donating to Basura Sagrada you are ensuring the continued authentic tradition of communal, interactive and sacred space at Burning Man. For years, people have come to rely on the temple as a physical space of transcendence, where they can connect to their own sense of the metaphysical and provide meaningful offerings and prayers to the beyond. Become a part of the magic, this year, and help Basura Sagrada uphold that legacy.

While many of us are just now dusting off last year’s playa gear and starting to think about our annual pilgrimage to Black Rock City – HUNDREDS of people have been busily donating hours, weeks and MONTHS of their lives to prepare, design, dream, scheme and build the temple of our collective dreams. See http://tinyurl.com/4qrfqa for recent photos of the crew at work on one of the most interactive, dynamic, community-centered temples in recent history! Basura Sagrada’s crew leaves for the playa in just over a week. Now is the time to support their efforts and make Basura Sagrada a reality!

If each person reading this message would donate even just $5, $20, $50 – whatever makes sense within your budget (and it would be great if your budget allowed for $100 or $1,000) – we will reach our goal of raising an additional $25K to get us out to the playa. And, with transportation costs what they are these days, we literally need that extra little bit to get the temple to the playa!

But we need your help to make it a reality – please donate now!

On behalf of the entire Basura Sagrada crew, thank you so much for your support!”

“Shade!! Want to volunteer this year at Burning Man and the sun just isn’t for you? Well, we have the second largest shade structure on the playa just awaiting your silly self. We the folks at Playa Info are actively seeking volunteers for a 4 hour shift with us. We answer people’s questions, take care of found items, register cameras, as well as help participants find their friends. And, we are a reaallllllly fun group. SNOW KOAN SOLAR WILL RECHARGE ALL THINGS ELECTRIC ON THE PLAYA

Matthew writes in to let us know:

“Snow Koan Solar will be on the playa again will a large solar array set-up specifically for Burners who need to recharge something that runs on electricity, large or small. Cameras, car batteries, electric art cars, sex toys … bring your charger and we’ll have a place to plug it in.

We will also have a comfortable shaded hang-zone below the panels, so sit-a-spell while we power you up with a snow cone or other chilled beverage.

We’ll post again in the JRS once we know our location.

PARTICIPATE IN THE AMERICAN DREAM AND SUPPORT BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS

Carmen, of the famed Burners Without Borders crew, writes:

“Burners without Borders is partnering with the The World Flag Project whose vision is ‘to raise global awareness, inspire innovative solutions and promote action toward challenges facing our world today.’ They support grassroots organizations like BWB who share their mission and they have offered to give BWB 10% of the proceeds of all World Flags sold to the Burner community before Burning Man this year. We will continue to collaborate with The World Flag Project after the event, and you can check out their work at http://www.theworldflagproject.org … BWB volunteers are proudly flying the World Flag at our headquarters in Peru and you can too! Thanks for your support.”

BLACK ROCK BOUTIQUE SEEKING FASHIONISTAS!

Our fine friends over at the Black Rock Boutique write to say:

“Each year The Black Rock Boutique distributes over 10,000 items of incredible playawear for all the citizens of our fine city. Black Rock is growing so fast, so please help us with our mission by donating some funky, furry, freaky clothes. We especially love pink, whites, reds, stripes, furry, animal prints, vintage, tutus, etc. … of course we won’t turn away anything fabulous. Boots and accessories are also gladly accepted. We’re open daily — mornings until late afternoon.”

QUIXOTE’S CABARET CLUB AND BAR SEEKING PERFORMERS

The Rabbit’s had many a question about this kind of thing … participants looking for performance stages on which to do their thing. Well, these folks have what you’re looking for. They write:

“Quixote’s Cabaret Club & Bar is a UK-based collective who get together to build a cabaret performance space and bar on the playa. If you’ve got something you need to show your fellow citizens of Black Rock City, then maybe we’ve got the performance space for you.

If you can sing, do magic, tell jokes, perform stand-up, strip, contort, dance, hoop, do acrobatics, act – or even just perform mindboggling stunts with a folding chair and two feet of twine, then we really want to hear from you. We’ll be running three performances on the playa, and we’ll bring the stage, the sound system, the lights and the crowd if you can just bring your talented self.

Whether you’re a seasoned performer or you’re planning to put your feet on the boards for the very first time, we’d love to hear from you. This will be our fourth cabaret excursion at Black Rock – help us make it the best yet!

PANTHEOGENESIS TEMPLE SEEKING SOUND HEALERS

It just wouldn’t be Burning Man without some sound healing in a yurt, right? Right. Purple sends us this:

“The Sound Healing Yurt at the Pantheogenesis Temple is seeking sound healers for solo and/or cooperative healing sessions.

We have many solo time slots available throughout Burn week as well as a daily cooperative sound healing session.

If you are an experienced sound healer and would like to join us to serve the Black Rock City Community, contact Purple at shamansdream (at) mac (dot) com .”

YOGA JAM: DRUMMERS AND MUSICIANS WANTED

Practitioners of yoga jamming (who knew?) write to put this out to the community:

“The only thing better than yoga is yoga practiced to live drumming and singing. Yoga will be happening at the Shady Waffle dome all week and I need musicians who’d like a chance to perform live for our Thursday afternoon dynamic flow yoga class. This is a chance to inspire the movements and mood of a rhythmic, dancelike and utterly spontaneous yoga flow and experience the divine coincidence of sound vibrations and subconcious movement. You are both the maestro and the musical commentator.

Help us to create this one-of-a-kind musical experience … drummers, singers, guitarists, accordianists, flutists, belly slapperists, burpists, etc etc. If you can play it, you can play it to yoga.

Please forward to any and all friends who will be on the playa and can bring their tunes to our yoga tent! Contact Jess at jleighweiss (at) gmail (dot) com for more info.

I can’t provide speakers/sound so those who can use the power of their breath are encouraged to inquire.

Namaste!”

CRITICAL TITS RIDES AGAIN!

The CT crew are doing it again. And they could use your help to make all the magic happen:

“We are pleased to announce that the 13th annual Critical Tits Ride and Party will be happening. We are sad to announce that this will be the last after-ride party we will be organizing. The ride will start at the Man at 4 pm on Friday as always. The party location will be shared by word of mouth only.

We need your help one last time. We are reaching out to the community and asking you to help us throw this incredible party by bringing refreshments to share. Many of you have been doing this for years, and we are grateful. We invite you to join us again. Please talk to your campmates, make a plan for what you would like to bring, and contact us via our website, at http://www.criticaltits.com/.

Thanks! The CT Crew”

MANGROVE PLAYA ARTWORK PERMANENTLY INSTALLED IN VANCOUVER

Vancouver based artist Bruce Voyce has installed elements of his “Garden of Earthly Delights” art piece in Vancouver, BC, Canada. This installation was part of the Burning Man 2007 Mangrove, surrounding the Man pavilion. Congratulations, Bruce. He writes:

“My artwork, ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’, was part of the 2007 Mangrove. I was able to bring several of the flowers and solar lights that were later installed in Holland Park in Vancouver Canada. The Floraform sculpture is 30-feet tall and has several species of local food and medicinal plants represented. The park has a series of sculptures that are based on the local plants that have important historical use. (I know, they would look better with flames but the parks people didn’t buy the idea.)

I have the images up at: http://tinyurl.com/66q77m
