OK, you’ve just rocketed down the eastern slope of I-80, firing out of the Sierras — or came through Carson City on your way up Route 395 — or started your initial descent into the regional airport … and there you see it: the bedazzling neon Oz that is Reno, shimmering on the valley floor.
Not only is Reno a fascinating place, it’s also your last chance for substantive civilization before you make the final push to Black Rock City. Where do you go now? How do you find what you need? What businesses should you patronize? And most importantly, where do you get a decent burger in this town?
In this issue, we give you all the information and resources you could possibly want to suss out the whats, wheres and wherefores of this, the ultimate pre- and post-playa pitstop, whether you’re staying for a few hours or a few days.
And hey, please think of Reno as an extension of the playa, and bring those nifty Ten Principles with you, right? Particularly Leave No Trace. Well … maybe not the full compliment of Radical Self- Expression … wearing pants might be a good idea (unless you’re Porky Pig, which you’re not).

BURNING MAN TICKET OUTLETS IN RENO
In case you missed it, BURNING MAN TICKETS ARE NOT BEING SOLD AT THE GATE THIS YEAR!! DO NOT WAIT. In Reno, you can get them at The Melting Pot, but only until Friday, August 22nd, so PLAN AHEAD!! The owners are longtime Burners, and good people. Plus, they have plenty of accessories and whatnots to enhance your Burning Man experience.
All tickets available at Walk-in Outlets are $295 each, with no additional service charges! They accept cash or money order/cashier’s check ONLY! Money orders and cashier’s checks should be made out to Burning Man. All payment must be made in US Dollars. BE PREPARED WITH EXACT CHANGE! Our outlets cannot make change for you. Absolutely no credit or debit cards, and no personal checks! Please do not burden our outlets with phone calls, they cannot hold tickets for you and they cannot answer any questions about Burning Man.

Reno-Tahoe visitor’s bureau is a non-profit group that assists visitors to the Reno and Lake Tahoe areas. 2008 RECYCLING IN RENO — TWO STORES, SIX LOCATIONS!
there are two stores (Whole Foods and Save Mart) with six locations, offering recycling services to Burners fresh off the playa.

Whole Foods Market (formerly Wild Oats) are going to have free, easy, no-strings-attached recycling available for Burners throughout the event. Containers will be available in the parking lot for you to simply drive into the parking lot and drop off your recyclables. Please have your recyclables as clean as possible and sorted before depositing in the appropriate containers.
Recyclabes accepted include glass, plastics (HDPE 1, 2, 4, & 5), aluminum, tin, cardboard, paper, alkaline and rechargeable batteries, and bicycles.
Egg-shells, coffee-grounds, and green-matter will also be accepted for composting, provided that it has not been in your mouth, or otherwise contaminated with pathogens or chemicals.
AND … you can also drop off the rest of your garbage in the appropriate dumpsters!!!
Just PLEASE remember: reyclables clean and sorted into the respective reyclables containers, compost into the compost containers, and garbage into the garbage containers. Your participation and care is very much appreciated!

This drive-thru recycling initiative is free and in its second year. Open 24 hours! Please have your recyclables as clean as possible and sorted before depositing in the appropriate containers. Garbage disposal will also be available to recyclers at $3 per 35-gallon trash bag. All proceeds raised from reyclables will be donated to support installation of free solar energy for local community services.

RIDESHARE LOCATIONS IN REN0-SPARKS
There are going to be four Rideshare locations in the Reno-Sparks area to seek or offer a ride to the playa during Burning Man: Whole Foods Market (formerly Wild Oats) and three Save Mart (formerly Albertsons) supermarkets.
Whole Foods is right next to US-395 in the southern stretch of Reno. Two of the Save Marts straddle the west and east parts of the region along I-80, and the other participating Save Mart is nearest to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
These locations are populated by lots of Burners on their way to Black Rock City, and given previous rideshare tradition and success in this area, hooking up a ride to the playa should really not be a problem.
Please limit your seeking, awaiting, or offer of a ride to the front of these stores and their parking lots. Respect these store properties by Leaving No Trace! Please also remember that not everyone that shops at these stores are Burners, and that not everyone may want to be approached. There are going to be plenty of Burners coming through, all-day-and-night, and patience and courtesy will make for success with finding a ride easier for you and for all. Helping out with gas money can be a big help! Everyone must have a Burning Man ticket, as no tickets will be sold at the gate. If you offer a ride, check that your riders have their tickets!! Everyone in a vehicle must be wearing a seatbelt. And, most importantly, be comfortable with those you may share a ride with.
If you are flying into Reno, here are your best options for getting to one of the rideshare locations (the airport is itself not one of them). There will be an Air Playa Info table at the airport operated by Burning Man and staffed by volunteers; you may find it easy to meet Burners there, some of whom may be renting a car. You might end up with a ride to the playa, or at least to a rideshare location. You may find others willing to share a taxi (a cab to the closest location, the Plumb Lane Save Mart, is around $8 … the next-closest location, Whole Foods Market, is around $12). There is also the local bus system, departing the airport nearly every half hour, but you’ll need to transfer to another bus to get to any of the four rideshare locations — www.rtcwashoe.com.

There are three bike projects in the Reno-Sparks area which rent or sell bicycles to Burners … count on getting a trustworthy bike from any of these projects at a VERY fair price!
And, if you do not wish to take a bike all the way home with you, Save Mart Supermarkets and Whole Foods Market in Reno will take them off of your hands as part of their recycling projects, and all of the bikes will then be donated to the Kiwanis Bike Program for Kids! So please do this rather than abandoning them on the playa!

Normally a bike program to benefit kids of all ages, the Kiwanis Bike Program receives large numbers of bikes from the region year-round, including bikes deposited by Burners for recycling — and they set aside used bikes in good condition for Burners to purchase. THE MANGROVE ART INSTALLATION IN DOWNTOWN RENO: SEPT 6 – DEC 13
On your way back out from Burning Man, maybe you have some time to stick around for a few days? If so, you can check out the Mangrove art installation on the banks of the Truckee River in downtown Reno. Josie of the Black Rock Arts Foundation writes:
“The Black Rock Arts Foundation is proud to announce the exhibition of The Mangrove, a collection of tree sculptures, each by a different artist or artists’ collective. First exhibited at Burning Man 2007, The Mangrove is an eclectic collection of artworks sculpted by five different artist collectives. Each work offers a different lesson, rendered with exquisite craft and detail, in how discarded materials can be reused to create beauty out of ‘trash’.
The works will grace the bank of the Truckee River in downtown Reno, Nevada, on the corner of Sierra Street and Island Avenue. This currently empty lot transforms into an interactive art grove September 6, 2008, and remains on display, free to the public, until December 13, 2008.
You are invited to join us in celebration of these innovative artworks, and of our first Civic Arts project in Nevada, at the Mangrove’s Opening Reception:

RENO’S BIGGEST LITTLE DECOMPRESSION – OCTOBER 18
Finally, if you’re in the Reno area in October, a little bird’s told the Rabbit that Reno’s official “Biggest Little Decompression” regional event will be October 18th, 2008. Daytime festivities at the Mangrove downtown (see above), nighttime activities, family fun, and more. They’re looking for volunteers, performers, art, and much more … from what we’ve seen, it stands to be quite a hoot. We’ll have more details to come, but for now, save the date.
