JRS VOLUME #12; ISSUE #26

Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 12, Issue #26
August 20, 2008

Greetings from Black Rock City! It’s been a long time we’ve been waiting to be able to say that, and now here we are, working and watching as the city slowly and steadily takes shape around us.

It’s beautiful out here, in all the dynamic ways that the Black Rock Desert can be. It’s been hot, cool, windy and eerily still … gorgeous sunsets and moonrises, mixed with the sounds of labor and laughter. The playa surface is as dusty as last year, only with smatterings of bumpy, frost heave-like dunes the consistency of stale brownies that will trip up unsuspecting bike tires and bounce a mutant vehicle, even at the 5mph speed limit — so be aware, and have a bike light at night, ‘cos there’ll be a new moon by burn night.

If you haven’t been following it, you really should check out John Curley’s excellent chronicle of the building of Black Rock City’s infrastructure on the Burning Blog: http://blog.burningman.com … we just saw him head out to document the assembly of a medical tent this morning … and if his stories don’t get you excited to come home, this edition of the JRS should certainly stir those embers smoldering in your furnace. It’s packed with a gloriously wide variety of playa activities to whet your imagination. Also, you can always poke through the Playa Calendar to see what else is going down in Black Rock City (and feel free to add your own event or activity): http://playacal.burningman.com

We’ve got one (maybe two?) more editions of the JRS coming your way before the event, so stay tuned … and yes, we know it’s been an informational onslaught, but wow, there’s just so much to cover in what will be the 5th largest city in Nevada, populated by some of the best people on the planet.

We’ll see you next week. Oh yes … yes we will.

CLARIFICATIONS ABOUT DMV PROTOCOLS

Here’s our good friend Odwally, with some clarifications about mutant vehicle policies that might have gotten muddied in the Law Enforcement edition of the JRS.

“Mutant vehicles to need to be finished before coming to the DMV to get registered.

Speeding by definition is over 5MPH, and slower if you are creating a lot of dust. A lot of dust is somewhat subjective though, and has different definitions, only one being ‘higher than your vehicle’. Consider that dust can often go over the vehicle at a standstill, especially with some very short vehicles which we do have, but that does not necessarily mean that they are driving too fast or should not be driving at all. And consider some of the very tall vehicles that might have to go pretty fast and kick up lots of dust before it gets above the height of the vehicle. In the end, keeping dust down and people’s safety in mind is the ultimate goal here.”

HANDY INFO ABOUT BLACK ROCK CITY: THE 2008 BURNING MAN TIP SHEET

As a public service to the community, the Burning Man Communications Team has put together the second annual handy dandy tip sheet, a 2-sided collection of useful information about being a part of Black Rock City. Participants will be getting them at the Greeters Station when they arrive, and you can see an online version here:

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/tip_sheets/

SOLIDER MEADOWS ROAD CLOSED TO ALL NON-EMERGENCY TRAFFIC DURING BMAN

If you are one a very small number of Burners who might consider accessing Black Rock City via the Soldier Meadows Road, through the remote area north of the Black Rock Desert, beware that this year, this route will be CLOSED to all non-emergency traffic during all of Burning Man!

If people go this way with just enough gas to get to Gerlach, and not enough to make it around the closure, they could be screwed. Please pass this information on to anyone you know who may use the Soldier Meadows Road to get to the playa for Burning Man.

Of course, if you don’t know what or where Soldier Meadows road is, you can be pretty sure this doesn’t pertain to you.

RESPECT THE ART: IF YOU DIDN’T MAKE IT, DON’T BREAK IT!!

Over the last several years, Burning Man has seen a disturbing trend growing in Black Rock City: more and more art installations are getting vandalized or damaged every year, including everything from tagging to outright destruction.

Artists work exceptionally hard to create artwork for the playa at great personal expense. Understandably, they are deeply affected when their work is destroyed or damaged … and participants who would have otherwise experienced the piece as it was intended are also affected. While some participants may see vandalism as their personal form of “radical self-expression”, ultimately, personal expression needs to be tempered by the realities of co-existing within a community, which requires mutual respect to thrive.

Please help us spread the word: if you didn’t make it, don’t break it! Help stop mindless vandalism to artwork on the playa.

We know that most JRS readers are unlikely to be the culprits of vandalism; we hope you will help by taking time to share in watching out for the artwork in our city.

Along these lines too, please don’t lock your bicycles to pieces of artwork! There are of course many reasons why this can be problematic, including when the artist intends to BURN THE PIECE.

AUDIO TOUR OF 2008 BURNING MAN ART, READY FOR DOWNLOAD

Anarchist Cowboy (aka Jim Tierney), a long-time ARTery volunteer, has once again created an incredible audio tour of some of the major art installations exhibited at Burning Man 2008. This year, he’s included commentary direct from some of the artists, as well. It’s available for download as MP3 files, which you can burn to CD or load onto your iPod (or other MP3 player) to bring with you to the playa. Thank you Jim, and the whole ARTery team! We hope you enjoy the tour, which you can find here on Burningman.com:

KIDSVILLE ALL FULL UP … ALTERNATIVE CAMPING AT REPUBLIC OF KIDTOPIA

It’s amazing! It’s incredible! Kidsville is FULL this year! There is only room for pre-registered camps to set up in Kidsville this year and Registration is CLOSED. Everyone who pre-registered by August 1 is guaranteed a space, but the rest of you with young whippersnappers will need to park your buggies somewhere else. Not to worry, there will still be plenty of room in general camping, and families will be directed to the block beween 5 & 6 where they can throw off the shackles of expectation and create an independent Republic of Kidtopia.

THE 48 HOUR FILM PROJECT RETURNS TO BURNING MAN

For the fourth year in a row, the 48 Hour Film Project will be at Burning Man!

Meet strangers and gather friends to make fiction films–write, shoot, and edit them–on the playa. Then a huge audience will gather to watch the films.

So bring a video camera to the playa! Bring a computer! Come create film art, and tell a story in the celluloid medium, spin yarns instead of fire, participate and collaborate with their films.

We’ll also need: – kind-hearted souls, to lend cameras and editing equipment to the effort – editors, preferably with equipment, to help the filmmakers finish their films before the showing

Check out our website:
http://www.48hourfilm.com/blackrockcity

And email us with any questions:
blackrockcity (at) 48hourfilm (dot) com

See your bad filmmaking self on the playa!

THE REDWOOD RESURRECTION CORRECTIVE RITUAL HUMAN SKY ART PERFORMANCE SCULPTURE

6:15 to Sunset, Wednesday the 27th

Things are coming together for our 1000 person Art For the Sky sunset event in beautiful ways. We’ve scored 110 ft crane, a beautiful art car with sound, musicians, fire dancers, a film company and sky captains. We are still needing MORE leader types to serve as ‘sky captains’ to help guide the very important fall and rise back up of our life size, human formed, redwood tree.

We are also seeking a performance troupe of 10-15 dancers or otherwise inspired folk to take on the creation of the protective “ring of light” that will start at the top of the resurrected tree like a halo and then descend to the bottom and then back up again. Originally, we conceived of fire dancers for this role until we realized they wouldn’t be able to get that close to the human made tree. This moving encircling ring will look spectacular when filmed from above and we have several ideas on how this can be done. We are looking for an inspired group, or sets of individuals to form a group and take full ownership of this important part of the performance. All fire dancers are still welcome!! and will be invited to form a giant arch around the tree once it has been resurrected.

All potential participants for the key roles mentioned above should email dancer (at) artforthesky (dot) com for more details. E-Playa Calendar listing for this event can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/583yy4

CHECK OUT THE EMAIL-TO-ART PROGRAM, WOW!

The BRC Post Office (Extreme Version) at Tokyo Plaza is initiating the Email-to-Playa Art Program this year. Have your default-world situated loved-ones follow the instructions on:

http://www.brcpostoffice.com/arttoplaya

and they will be able to send a short message transformed to art delivered to their favorite Burning Man participant. The intended BRC citizen will receive it as art (our choice as to which artistic medium!) delivered in person. If we fail to track down the citizen in question, one of our grumpy and/or sexy postal employees will have the art-transformed message at the Tokyo Post Office. The reverse can also be done: playa folks can send short messages to the default world, and these will be transformed to art and then e-delivered to your default world friend. If we can’t deliver it on playa, please make sure your folks know pickup is at the BRC Post Office at Tokyo plaza (9 o’clock plaza).

Techies, Artists and Delivery Specialists are needed to help make this project a reality. Donations of certain tech equipment needed. Or if want you want to support this effort with a small contribution go here: http://www.brcpostoffice.com/donations or contact blue (at) infosecgroup (dot) com

KOSTUME KULT COSTUMES THE NEEDY

Dearest Burners…

Due to an outpouring of Burner love, the playa has provided and Kostume Kult gots da’ goods. While we still encourage on-playa costume donations, we are o-fficially ready!

Located at ~8:08 & Esplanade in NYrvana Village, we are open for business every afternoon Tuesday through Saturday. With new stuff being brought out daily, body paint and other enhancings, we will be there to “costume the needy” and help folks get involved.

For those not fully familiar with KK— we have been around since 2002 with most of our people from NYC with friends joining us from around the world. Every year we support this mission with numerous fundraising events and donations from costume and theater groups and burners like you who wish to recycle their costume clutter.

Philosophically, “The Dogma of the Kostume Dome” incorporates the following principles of Burning Man…

– GIFTING: All in our esplanade frontage dome is available free of barter or need to return. Recycle freely but all is voluntary.

– IMMEDIACY: If you are seeking a particular item you will not find it– You will find something else! We have a hodgepodge of strange stuff so the idea is to accessorize and play but not to come hoping to find a dozen showgirl costumes, or other, in pursuit of a specific need. Come with no agenda and leave with a new attitude!

– DECOMMODIFICATION: One transformation per customer… Please suppress the commercialistic urges that will well up in you when confronted with a wild selection of glittery stuff. These are not costumes to be hoarded for later use but to be experienced and later passed on. Come back every day for a new look but please think of others and do not grab armfuls. Kostume Kult offers a shopping experience unclouded by commercial motivation. It is a place of discovery and interaction.

– RADICAL SELF EXPRESSION: Push your boundaries and motivate others to do the same. Interact and encourage. Make friends and help people to liberate their inner child.

If you have any questions please email Cody (4x4cody (at) gmail (dot) com) or, on-playa, ask for:

Jewels or Laura: KK camp producers…
Stefan: Volunteer coordinator… Do a greeter shift in the dome!
Mayor Dave: NYrvana Village leader
Costume Jim, KK founder and lead costume wrangler
