Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 13, Issue #2
September 19, 2008

If you’ve ever thought the JRS spanned the sublime to the ridiculous, this issue will not do much to dissuade you of that notion. It’s a shorty, but there are some things coming up you will not want to miss, wethinks.

Two key things of note this time around: first off, TV Free Burning Man is offering up a couple Burning Man programming blocks this weekend that you won’t want to miss … they’re guaranteed to make you severely homesick. Second, you are invited to participate in the 6th annual Burning Life Festival in the virtual world of Second Life. It’s got all the trappings of the burn, without the dust … it’s pretty cool … check it out. Details on both below.

And then there are some S&M paper dolls gone missing … but hey, it wouldn’t be Burning Man without the whole of the visible spectrum of weird represented right? Right. And we like it that way. We remind you, Lost and Found items (and other post-burn connection with your Burning friends) can be posted and perused on the ePlaya: http://tinyurl.com/54xs39.

We hope your post-burn decompression is going well … and oh, speaking of which, our next issue will be a round-up (yee haw!, as it were) of Decompression events all over the world, so keep an eye out for that!

The Man burns in many, many days. Unless you’re counting the Burning Life Festival, in which case it’s much, much sooner.

POST-BURN AUTOMOBILE CRASH REPORT

Heather and Stephen sent this sobering tale: “After the Temple burn on Monday morning around 3:00am, two of us rolled a white Jeep three times about 10 miles south of Cedarville, California. A group of Burners stopped, found us alive and pulled us carefully from the car. They wrapped us in blankets, found first aide kits, wiped blood from my face and held space for us. We remember their faces so clearly. We were in shock. Soooo scared. But we need to thank them all. We need them to know that we walked away with a broken collar bone, three stitches, bruises, heavy hearts and forever changed. But we still walked away. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

This was my sixth Burning Man yet my first burn in five years. I fell in love with Burning Man again. It was a very hard week. People asked ‘Isn’t it bigger? Hasn’t it changed?’ It’s the same really…at it’s core. But I’ve changed. We’ve changed. It’s just that our perspectives are always changing. And I’m still in love with all of you and all that Burning Man offers.

Lastly, no matter how urgently you want to get off the Playa. No matter how sober. No matter what your point-of-view…please consider not leaving at night. May your roads always carry you safely.

Be well and burn. Heather and Stephen from Portland, Oregon”

HAVE YOU SEEN FLAT STANLEY?

Flat Stanley was lost (I hate to say stolen with so many cool Burners out there) in Black Rock City 2008. He’s a really cool doll (paper about 12″ tall and dressed in black leather bondage gear), if you found him or know where he is, he is in the middle of a long journey, and he needs to get to his next destination, so if you could email me, I will give you an address for where he needs to go next. My email is aaronfrancis (at) gmail (dot) com if you’re not sure if you have him or not, he looks like this:

[Editor’s Note: Perhaps Flat Stanley is still entangled in strands of oversized benoit balls? Just a thought.]

6TH ANNUAL BURNING LIFE FESTIVAL COMES TO A COMPUTER NEAR YOU!

“Both Burning Man and the Internet make it possible to re-gather the tribe of mankind…. We must use technology to create space stations here on planet Earth, islands of intense and living contact.”
– Larry Harvey, January 1997

“[Burning Man] reinforced the idea that what we believe in or what we make of things is all that is real … I was just blown away by the fact that … it had this mystical quality that demolished the barriers between people. And I thought about it … “What magical quality makes that happen?”
– Philip Rosedale, founder of Second Life, after his 1999 burn

Burning Life 2008

If you didn’t get enough of the playa this year, or weren’t able to make the journey to be with us, you can still get your burn on, without leaving home, at Burning Life ’08, in the virtual world of Second Life.

This is the sixth year that Burning Life will be celebrated in Second Life, and this year, since many real-world burners are long-time participants in the Burning Life community, Danger Ranger has organized the first Burning Man Regional group in a virtual world.

We’d like to invite you to join us “inworld” for this one-week event, from September 27th to October 5th. You can visit the art installations, attend live events, and participate in the experience.

Burning Life is an online event inspired by Burning Man. It follows the same ten principles (see: http://tinyurl.com/d3unc ), including immediacy and participation. Burning Life takes place in Second Life, a 3-D virtual world created by its Residents, inhabited by millions of Residents from around the globe. Philip Rosedale, the founder of Second Life, was at Burning Man this year, but he first attended Burning Man in 1999 and came away inspired by the community experience and art. In Second Life, he has created an online community where people can build their own world and be whatever they want to be, in a shared, immersive experience.

Second Life’s salute to the radical experiment in community that is Burning Man started in 2003, when a small group of Burners and Linden Lab created an ephemeral art installation in the weeks following Burning Man. Named Burning Life, it included virtual art installations and live inworld events.

This year, Burning Life 2008 offers us an opportunity to experience all the usual fixtures of the real life playa– DPW, Greeters, Rangers, Lamplighters, large scale art, bicycles and even a virtual dust storm. Shouting Fire/BMIR will be streaming radio into this virtual festival. Nearly 400 Second Life Residents have signed up to create unique art and performances for the event, including large works of art, interactive theme camps, a fashion show and of course, the burning of the Man amid a fireworks display.

To learn more about the event visit the Burning Life website:

http://burninglife.secondlife.com

Here is how you can participate: Download the free software here: http://secondlife.com/join/ and install it– this is similar to a web browser but you are in a 3-D environment. When you first launch Second Life, you will be “born” with a new name as an “avatar”, which can be customized whenever and however you like. Just like at Burning Man, how you present yourself is completely up to you. When you first arrive, you’ll see a short tutorial to orient you on how to get around Second Life. Then, take yourself up gate road, thru the Greeters, and remember how great it is to be a playa virgin again!

Preparations for Burning Life have been ongoing for months, and the “camping” (building) space is already full for this year. But there are still plenty of ways to participate. Playafy your avatar, and enter the fashion show. Grab a public art car or green bike and start exploring. Offer to help a camp throw an event. Join the Lamplighters. Haunt the stage at the Center Camp Cafe, where live music and performance will be happening 24 hours a day! If you already have Second Life building skills, you can sign up for a porta-potty art project.

If you would like to join the discussion list for this new Regional event, you need to attend Burning Life and visit the Regional Information Booth located across from the Center Camp Cafe.

If you would like to be on the announce list for the Burning Life Regional group, send a blank email to secondlife-announce-subscribe (at) burningman (dot) com

We hope to see you there!

BURNING MAN IMAGE GALLERY BURGEONING WITH 2008 GOODNESS

Images from 2008 are being moderated into the Burning Man Image Gallery by the droves. By “droves”, we mean 419, as of this writing. Is that a drovelette maybe? Perhaps it is now. Do blow some quality time on this, would you? Thanks.

We’ll be sharing more image galleries from the many talented photographers in our midst in future issues.
