{================================================} =================INTRODUCTION=================== {================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

As we enter the heart of May, things are really picking up and aiming toward the heart of Black Rock City. At the same time Burning Man’s global reach continues to enrich the lives of many. How so?

The Black Rock Arts Foundation just awarded $45,000 worth of grants to 10 artists around the world … Burners Without Borders just provided $6,500 in funds through its stimulus package program … and Black Rock Solar just finished the installation of a solar array on roof of the Nevada Discovery Museum that will save them $6,000 in energy costs annually. Making it happen? Making a difference? Yeah, it would seem so.

Meanwhile, our focus is trained on the road to the playa! DPW has started its work weekends (and reports that the playa is STILL WET, which bodes well, particularly as we’re returning to our 2007 city size!). Honorarium and other Burning Man artists are hard at work realizing their projects for Black Rock City. A talented collective of Austin artists are cranking on this year’s Temple (entitled “Fire of Fires”). Themecamps are deep in their planning phases (like KidsVille … see below). And project fundraisers and YES! Precompression events are imminent in SF – and things are probably heating up in your town too with preparation mode in full effect! (Find out: http://regionals.burningman.com/).

And now? Some reminders to keep you on the logistical ball! Our scholarship and low-income ticket application deadline is the end of this month, as are theme camp registrations. Mutant vehicle and art installation registration deadlines are fast approaching too (details below), so it’s time to put dowwwn the procrastination and slowwwly step away.

Get ready … the Man burns in 113 days, people! Onward!

-Will
(Associate Rabbit)

TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO REGISTER YOUR PLAYA PROJECT

If you’re going to be bringing an art installation, or a mutant vehicle, or a pre-registered theme camp, now’s the time to get it registered! We have deadlines for these things, folks, and they are rapidly approaching:

* Registered Theme Camp Placement: May 31
* Mutant Vehicle: June 30
* Art Installation: July 1
* Disabled Persons Vehicle: July 31
* Media: Video Projects: July 24 (NOTE: Personal Use Agreement has NOT been updated for 2009 yet, so stand by for additional info if you’re just shooting personal use video)

And remember, procrastination is evil. Now, before you jump into the form and start cranking out a questionnaire, you’ll want to know what the registration criteria are first, right? Right. Here’s where to go:

* Theme Camps: http://tinyurl.com/aqrlj5
* Mutant Vehicles: http://tinyurl.com/aan5xs

And now that you’re all informed and ready to go, fill out the appropriate project registration form here:

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR BURNERS LOST – NAMES BY JULY 20

Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away in the last calendar year. This tradition continues today to honor people who have impacted our Burning experiences and participated in making Burning Man happen. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost this year who you feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque.

Submission of names: please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this JRS, but rather send just their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to: remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com

Submissions need to be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque.

(Andie Grace adds this: “I have just hit send on request for two friends of Burning Man: longtime volunteer, artist, and rabble rouser Caleb Schaber, and amazing art car artist Tom Kennedy, both of whom we lost quite unexpectedly last month. Not a few folks noted that the JRS had not yet acknowledged these two very notable losses at the core of our community and our history. They will be missed.”)

BRINGING KIDS TO BURNING MAN? LEARN ABOUT KIDSVILLE!

If you’re busy running around looking for your Inner Child on the playa, take a moment to watch real kids enjoy themselves out there. You could learn a thing or two. Anyway, if you’re bringing kids to Burning Man, KidsVille is the BEST! On that note, Lora sez:

“KidsVille is THE place for children of all ages. We are a group of diverse families creating a unique space for play and other activities. Families with children 0-17 years of age are welcome to camp with us if they are pre-registered.

Please note: KidsVille is NOT a babysitting service. Families who wish to camp within KidsVille need to register no later than August 1, 2009. If you are planning on bringing your children to Burning Man, please join our Yahoo group, where you’ll find lots of people available to answer all of your questions.

“WE THE PEOPLE SAY” PROJECT UPDATE

Did you see this project out by the Man last year? Well, William writes in to tell us about how it’s progressing:

“We the people…. are being heard.

The citizens of Black Rock City are being heard in the halls of our Government. If you stopped by the Man last year you may have visited the WE THE PEOPLE Kiosk located nearby. It contained an invitation to tell the entire Federal government your thoughts. Well, the transcription is complete, and the e-mail has started. Every (readable) comment that every Burner contributed will be sent to every member of the Federal government (every Congressman, both The President and Vice President, and the nine Supreme Court Justices). The transcript is available for all to read at:

http://www.wethepeoplesay.net/ Should anyone in government reply to the e-mail, then those too will be posted on that same site. Thanks to everyone who contributed!! Remember, these people work for YOU!!”

GIRLS’ GUIDE TO BURNING MAN

Olla writes in to tell us about her informative (and quite nice) blog, providing information about Burning Man specifically for women. [Editor’s note: the name “Girls’ Guide” was the author’s choice. That is all.]

“My name is Olla and I am a blogger. I just started a blog called Girls’ Guide To Burning Man (http://girlsguidetoburningman.wordpress.com/). I’ve been to Burning Man two years in a row and this year will be my third year. Having gone those last two years I think I’ve learned a thing or two about surviving mentally, physically, socially and fashionably in Black Rock City. I’m starting this blog because when I went my first year, I was frustrated to find out that there really wasn’t that much information online for a girl like me to research what it is like to go to Burning Man.

I’m sure that in time this blog will shift and change, but for now I can tell you that I am planning on writing to help out the first year girls that are going to Burning Man. This includes (but is not limited to): surviving in the desert, becoming social with the Black Rock population, what to bring, what to wear and articles about different theme camps. It’ll help girls prepare for the racy and unending toplessness. How to deal with all the free love if you’re in a relationship. Ideas on contributing, fashion ideas… anything! Think of this blog like a fashion magazine for strong-minded playa girls (but online of course).

Hopefully girls (and maybe some guys) will find my information helpful. If you are a seasoned Burner, I would love to hear some of your feedback!

I also need a little help. I want to do email interviews with different theme camps. I’d like to see if anyone would want to do a guest post on their experiences. Pictures, video or anything that would help out a Burning Man first-timer. If you’re selling items online that are perfect for going out to the playa, I want to know who you are! Please get in contact with me soon: ollaurena (at) gmail (dot) com.

Happy Burning!

Olla Ubay”

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS COMMUNITY STIMULUS PACKAGE GRANTEES ANNOUNCED

Carmen from Burners Without Borders reports on their awarding of stimulus package grants:

“We were blown away by the response to the BWB Community Stimulus Package. About a month ago we put out the call for creative, community building projects that needed a little boost in funding to be successful; BWB offered $100-$1,000 grants as a part of this Stimulus Package. With 35 applicants, the decision wasn’t easy. However, because of all of the fantastic proposals, we decided to offer $1500 more in grants than we originally intended, bringing the total up to $6500. We have posted all of the projects on the BWB website so that you may check out the 15 projects that were funded and also see how you or your community could support any of the non-funded projects that might interest you.

Please go to http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org and join us in supporting the relentless creativity of this community.”

BRAF GRANTEES ANNOUNCED FOR 2009

The Grant Committee of the Black Rock Arts Foundation is proud to announce the winners of our 2009 Grant Cycle. We received a record number of applications this year, over 260, and awarded more grants than ever before, giving away a total of $45,000 to 10 projects.

Our 2009 Grantee projects represent a truly diverse range of approaches to interactive art making. The concepts and implementation of the projects contrast greatly, employing both high and low-tech media, inviting both expressive freedom and refinement of craft, arising from both established collaborations and events and grassroots efforts, reaching both small-town and metropolitan communities. But, as always, our grantees share a common goal: to include their community in the creation of a project that exists for and belongs to the public – a project that provokes immediate actions that connect individuals with each other and with their community at large.

BLACK ROCK SOLAR COMPLETES ARRAY ON THE NEVADA DISCOVERY MUSEUM

Black Rock Solar is proud to announce the completion of a solar array installation for the new Nevada Discovery Museum in the old City Hall in downtown Reno. This will be the premier science educational facility for kids in Northern Nevada, and it’s an honor to be a part of it.

More than a year in development — in part because the project was being built on an old building, with very special requirements for loading, etc — this array will save them more than $6,600 annually on their energy bills.

More information and photos galore:

http://blackrocksolar.org

And now … it’s on to the next project!

PARTICIPATE: VOLUNTEER FOR THE MAN

Want to get involved? Burning Man has plenty of on-playa and yearround opportunities to volunteer. Whether you’re a carpenter, software engineer, schlepper of coffee, lighting expert, lawyer, or … well … even if you can stand upright and follow a finger, there’s probably a volunteer position that’s just perfect for you. GRACE IN MOTION – THE GOLDBERG COLLECTIVE

Our friend Rene writes to tell us about a cool project he’s got going on this year. Rene is nothing if not good at coming up with cool projects. Says he:

“Are you creative, mechanically inclined and looking for a Burning Man project? The Goldberg Collective would like to meet you! The Goldberg Collective is a collaborative effort to create a modular, interactive, kinetic sculpture for Burning Man, entitled “Grace in Motion”. It writes Haikus. The modular design means you can contribute from anywhere. As the group’s name suggests, this is a Rube Goldberg machine. A modular Rube Goldberg machine of indefinite length, to be precise. You can think of it as extremely complicated dominoes, or crowd sourcing the Life Size Mousetrap.

Intrigued? Confused? Take a closer look here:

BLACK ROCK CITY ANIMAL CONTROL – CALLING ALL EVOLUTIONARIES!

We love BRCAC for the invaluable service they provide to the citizens of Black Rock City. If you haven’t been bagged and tagged by BRCAC, you haven’t lived. Or you were living without a bunny costume, anyway. Shannon writes:

“Black Rock City Animal Control (BRCAC) is looking for a pet-friendly camp that is willing to host our after party and pet auction Tuesday evening, starting at approximately 6:30-7pm, following one of our notorious animal collection runs. For those unfamiliar with BRCAC, our mission is “to provide a safe, healthy and caring environment where animals and people can co-exist.” Our duties, especially on these animal collection runs, involve anything from picking up stray animals to trapping nuisance (even rabid) animals to enforcing BRC pet licensing laws.

For the after party, all that we require from the host camp for this event is a decent sized space (can fit up to 60 people or so) and a warm dispostion. Bonus if you can also provide a ‘refueling station’ for some of our thirsty staff. In return, we promise to bring our vibrant energy bundled inside our signature red jumpsuits, our extremely professional female medical staff fully equipped with tranqulizers required for the necessary sedation of badly behaved animals, and an animal collection van with a very sophisticated bunny-trapping mechanism and a booming sound system, DJ included!

And, just to put the icing on the cake, we will offer our lucky host camp a group discount towards our spay/neutering program.

If interested, please respond to shannon.behrman (at) gmail (dot) com.

Looking forward to serving you, the citizens of BRC, again on the playa,

BRCAC”
