{================================================} =================INTRODUCTION=================== {================================================} **/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

Hi everybody, hope your mid-summer reverie is made that much reverious by thoughts of the impending festivities in Black Rock City. Right? Right.

On to the business at hand. First off, we’d like to extend our apologies … as we were moving BMHQ, some of our processes got knocked sideways, causing delays on some projects, including the What Where When and the Burning Man Resource Listing. See, like, we had all these grand plans and stuff? But yeah, we’ve landed, put our noses to the grindstones, and, well … it’s time to get ‘er done. So, read below for details on how to kick down your submissions for each.

Recent Black Rock Desert visitors report that the playa surface is in pretty good shape! This, combined with a return to the 2007 city size, combined with the oodles of art installations and theme camp applications we’re seeing roll in, bodes well for much impending goodness in Black Rock City. The Man, by the way, is built, and is resting in its container, waiting for us. Read Slim’s account of the build:

http://blog.burningman.com/?tag=man-build

So, we love this time of year because we start to get post requests from the wide variety of folks who are looking for people to join in their efforts to stage adventurous and bizarre feats, from the sublime to the ridiculous. Send yours in, and we’ll highlight what we can. Email jackrabbitspeaks (at) burningman (dot) com with “POST REQUEST” in your subject line.

OK, that’s it for now. Stay tuned for some logistically important JRSs coming your way in the next weeks – this is the time of year to really perk up your ears and start keeping notes, because holy wow, you’re leaving in less than two months! The Jack Rabbit knows, there’s a lot to do to get ready.

THE 2009 BURNING MAN RESOURCE LISTING – LET’S DO IT!

The “Resource Issue” — the annual JRS issue with links to interesting items and deals aimed at Burners is changing up a little in this year of evolution…and yes, we’re a bit late to start taking in submissions thanks to the complexities of our office move.

We do avoid advertising and commodification around these parts, but the Resource issue has been around a long time. Why? Well, we also get so many questions from Burners looking for suggestions from others about where to get stuff they need, and discounts on playa necessities that you can’t take advantage of if you don’t know about them…so in the interest of supporting you with info you want, we’ve annually offered the Resource Issue. This year, we’ve just automated things a little, and voila: easy peasy, SMOP, kerpow – a webform.

So, then: to have your product, service, or playa preparation event considered for inclusion in the 2009 Burning Man Resource Listing, fill out the form here:

http://bit.ly/17BVi7

Appropriate submissions will be added to a Burningman.com page that we’ll share in the JRS, on our Facebook page, and on Twitter.

Because we know small vendors have tight lead times for taking and fulfilling product orders before the event, the window for submissions is quite short: PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR LISTING BY TUESDAY, JULY 14.

Our goal is to have the page live by July 17.

Also: if you just can’t stand to get this kind of “buying stuff” chocolate in your Burning Man peanut butter, well, that’s why the Resource Listing will be a link you can click, at your leisure, or not, which is cool too. We get you, either way.

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

WHY, THE “WHAT WHERE WHEN” IS COMING YOUR WAY

The What Where When (affectionately known around BMHQ as the Whawhawha) is our annual publication of all the events, happenings and … well, whatevers … that are going down in Black Rock City. So, you got one of those? Make sure folks know about it, so they can come participate!

We’re banging on the Playa Calendar to get it ready to receive Whawhawha submissions – but because of behind the scenes delays, this window will also be SHORT this year. We’re telling you now: get your events listing ready. Meaning, get your camp to agree on exactly what time your Three Legged Blindfolded Roller Skate Race and Ice Cream Social is going to be, and watch this space… we’ll have the submission form up for you next week.

We’ve got two versions of this thing. A digital version that anybody can get to, with an unlimited capacity for the number of listings. Then there’s the printed version that’s handed out at the Greeters Station at BRC, and in that one, we only publish a limited amount of listings, on a first-come, first-served basis. So point is, if you really really really want to be in the printed version, get your submission in quick.

Either way, remember: your event description must be 140 characters or less.

Cool? Cool.

THE OFFICIAL POSTER FOR BURNING MAN 2009 IS NOW AVAILABLE

OK, when this Rabbit first saw our poster for 2009, there was an audible thunk as jaw hit floor. Seriously (and no disrepect to Hugh, DA and other illustrators of past beautiful posters), this is one of the most amazing posters we’ve ever seen. The composition, the detail work, the visual messaging — it’s a simply top notch piece of artwork. You really need to see this thing … it was created by the same folks who did this year’s ticket design.

Check it out, and get your copy:

Book today at http://www.burncleanproject.org ! We have biodiesel- fueled rides on Mon 31st, Tues 1st, and Wed 2nd from Reno-to-BRC, and the following Sun 6th and Mon 7th from BRC-to-Reno. BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS COMMUNITY STIMULUS PACKAGE

Carmen of BWB writes to say:

“BWB recently launched its $6500 Community Stimulus Package that is proudly funding over 15 amazing projects worldwide, including community gardens in Botswana and a circus camp for kids in Massachusets. Wonderful partnerships are forming as we find even more innovative ways to bring the fierce creativity of the playa to local communities everywhere. You can read all about the projects as they are happening on BWB’s Blog at:

http://blog.burnerswithoutborders.org

Thanks to all of those in San Diego who produced the $10,000 fundraiser this year that made BWB’s Stimulus Package possible. Your generous efforts are making an immeasurable difference around the world.

To keep up with the latest updates from the BWB community, we invite you to join us on Twitter at:

BIO*TANICAL GARDEN ART INSTALLATION SEEKING GAZEBO OR DOME

Perhaps you’re not able to make a monetary donation to support artwork on the playa, but maaaaybe you can help with a thing you already have, that an honorarium project needs? Check it:

“The Bio*Tanical Garden Art Installation is looking for a kind hearted Burner to lend/sell us a sturdy metal gazebo or geodesic dome structure. The dome/gazebo will be used solely to house the art installation so nothing would be done to the structure or modified in any way. lt should be approximately 10′ x 10′ (but a smaller or larger structure could work too) and tall enough to stand inside.

Unfortunately the gazebo we were hoping to use has fallen through quite late in the game. We are reaching out & hoping the community can respond! Anyone who has or knows someone who has a dome/gazebo for loan/sale, please contact Rossella or Justin directly at roxmund (at) gmail (dot) com or justindavella (at) gmail (dot) com … Thanks!!!”

GET YOUR STUFF ON THE CONTAINER FROM NEW YORK CITY

Cinemagirl writes:

“The New York City container ships your stuff from the NYC area to the burn and back!

We sell by the cubic foot and we go on sale July 7th at NOON EDT. The first 2000 cu/ft sell at $5 and the remaining cu/ft are $6. Because the containers get hot and go on the rails, we don’t allow generators and nothing that’s touched gas. Nothing illegal or might go BOOM in high heat!

Please check out our website for information:

http://www.nyccontainer.com

… and be radically self-reliant and read all the info!

Much love,
Cinemagirl”

DREAMYOURTOPIA AT THE LOWLANDS FESTIVAL IN THE NETHERLANDS

Former funded Burning Man art installation “Dreamyourtopia” (from 2008) is enjoying an extended life around the world. It’s in the Netherlands now … cool. Dadara writes:

“It might be interesting for all those European Burners to know that Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia will be performing border procedures and issuing Dream Passports and Dream Visa on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of August at the Lowlands Festival in the Netherlands.

Dutch and English immigration forms are available through the Dreamyourtopia website here:

WANT TO INVITE AN ARTIST TO DINNER?

This amazing and generous participant-founded program has been going on a few years now, and we love to see this kind of inter-community support happening, where people’s talents are being applied to help others excel in their own ventures, for the benefit of everybody. Having one’s cake and eating it too, one might say (insert groan here). Read on, and participate!

Colonel Angus writes: “Have you heard about the Feed the Artists program?

FtA is Communal Art Grant through food; opportunity for early-arrival theme camps to support our honorarium artists by offering them the gift of nourishment, camaraderie, support, and appreciation.

Most of the artists work their asses off during setup week with little time for interaction outside of their own crews or even nutritious eating. So we figured with the gift of a simple heartfelt meal, the Burning Man community could support its artists and help ensure that they’re not completely burned out by the time burn week rolls around.

We do this to: 1. Support Burning Man’s artists
2. Create healthy and meaningful interactions between artists and theme camps that promote bonding, collaboration and the sharing of resources, and
3. Elevate the role of food on the playa as an art form

The idea is simple. In addition to our own dinners, we match Burning Man’s funded artists with early-arrival theme camps who may have the space, time, and a bit of extra resources to provide them a very special gift … a nourishing, heartfelt meal. A meal that provides everyone involved with a brief respite from the stresses of playa setup; a meal that allows two groups who may not have otherwise become acquainted to “break-bread” together and discover each other; and, most importantly, a meal that nourishes the bodies, minds, and souls of all its participants, and ultimately, by extension, the entire Burning Man community.

Last year, along with SEVEN other theme camps, FtA provided at least one gourmet meal to EVERY FUNDED ARTIST who wanted one, over 850 people, and the responses from the theme camp hosts were phenomenal. In many cases, the theme camps enjoyed the experience as much, if not more so, than their guests!

So is your camp already going to be out on the playa during setup week, and would you like to feed some artists? If so, check out the FtA website:

http://www.feedtheartists.net

It will tell you everything you need to know, including which artists are available on which nights. Artist’s crews range in size from 4— 40+, so even the smallest camps can serve as hosts. And we’ll help you every step of the way. Any questions? Email ColonelAngus(at)feedtheartists(dot)net.”

SMELLS LIKE B(E)ACON

Back again for our fifth year on the Playa, the Black Rock Beacon is gearing up for Black Rock City 2009, bringing you a unique mix of news, opinions, photography and smoked-pork-product trivia.

Fueled by ridiculous amounts of non-vegan-friendly, high-protein, chemically preserved porcine goodness, we keep tabs on what’s going up and down on the playa. We’re planning five issues (six if somebody burns the Man early), and we have some new equipment that should sharpen up our photo quality.

So you’re wondering, where do YOU fit it? Well, we hope you’ll enjoy reading us as you explore the city, and maybe drop by during the 23 3/4 hours we’re frying up our namesake . But if you want MORE, we can dish it out. We need a few good Burners to help us write, edit, produce, and distribute the paper, and to give us a hand with the preparation and consumption of tasty breakfast meats. Beginners welcome, except in the kitchen. And, um, well, if you like our paper and want to give us a hand via PayPal, we’re up for that too.

Contact information and copies of all our past issues are available on our website at www.blackrockbeacon.org. There’s news to work on now — for the web and the paper — so if you want to be part of the longest- running daily on the playa, drop by and say hi.

Lux. Veritas. Lardum.

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW ON THE PLAYA

We are big, big fans of Rocky Horror. So we’re glad to see it represented in Black Rock City over the last few years … and this year too! Check it out:

“Attention lovers of everything fishnet! For the fourth year in a row the 6 Minute players will be putting on a live shadow cast performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show! We put the show on Friday at midnight, so anyone who needs a Rocky Horror fix come on down to Videogasm at Snowflake Village and give yourself over…to absolute pleasure…

In addition we are looking for new cast members. If you would like to join in the fun, have any Rocky experience or are just looking for a great time, shoot me an email! There’s minimal time involvement on the playa (1/2 hour before the show) and we always have a fun time and a great audience. Don’t be nervous, you know you want to.

NO SPECTATORS DAY – JULY 31

July 31 is No Spectators Day as officially recognized in San Francisco by Mayoral Proclamation. We kid you not! True, and we’re darned proud! So … how will you celebrate?

In San Francisco, meet at Dolores park on Friday 7/31 from 5pm to 8pm for a park cleanup (we’ll have trash-bags and MOOP-sticks); then head over to Kilowatt (3160 16th St at Guerrero St., SF.) for cocktails and conversation.

If you live somewhere else, why not organize your own local effort?! Let your imaginations run amok in the very best of ways. On July 31st everyone is a Participant! We are encouraging EVERYONE to personally embody the spirit of No Spectators Day through acts of self- expression, civic participation, and gifting — and to make a full weekend of it! Here are some ideas …

10 Suggested Things To Do for No Spectators Day/Weekend
1. Commit random acts of kindness and gifting!
2. Adopt-your-block, beach or nearby park – do a neighborhood cleanup, and involve your neighbors. While you’re at it, strike up a game of sockpuppet croquet!
3. Make public art: Make some art and take it to the streets (but Leave No Trace)
4. Dress expressively: Create your own Art-Parade — why save that fairy-turnip princess costume just for the playa?
5. Going away this weekend? Then pack your bags! … your trash & recycling bags that is, and take LNT on the road with you! While you’re at it, learn more about the Burning Man Regional Network: http://regionals.burningman.com/ and get involved in other cities!
6. Volunteer for an Arts non-profit — like BRAF (http://www.blackrockarts.org )
7. Create an art car or bike and go for a ride!
8. Get involved with a Burning Man Art-project — see these links for artist needs (www.burningman.com/installations/09_art_brc.html) and (http://www.burningman.com/installations/09_art_honor.html )
9. Engage in acts of civic participation — Burners Without Borders (www.burnerswithoutborders.org ) and Black Rock Solar (www.blackrocksolar.org) have some ideas. Or you may wish to volunteer at a local school, senior center or food bank, to name a few…
10. Instead of a garage or sidewalk-sale, have an Un-Sale or “Gift- Away,” where you give items away for FREE. That’s right … stand around like you’re having a sale – and surprise people by GIFTING it all, instead.
Remember, it’s No Spectators Day! … Just Another Day of Burner Public Participation thru Artistic Creation!

Enjoy NOT spectating!
