Well, things have come full circle. The DPW and big art crews are out on the playa, working their tails off in 119 degree heat (!!!) to build the infrastructure of Black Rock City, and we are lucky to have John Curley back on the scene this year, covering it all through his incredible photographs and wonderful words. This week we’ve read about the Man base, the Temple construction, and the wild appreciation of a good playa rainbow. You can follow his whole series here on the Burning Blog:

http://blog.burningman.com/category/building-brc/

Here at BMHQ, we’re getting seriously psyched. Most all of us (those who aren’t there already) head for the playa this week, and everything’s revving up just right for this year’s Burn. Things are clicking along nicely, everybody’s making their plans, and concocting their costumes, their schemes, their camps, their transporation, their pranks, and their hot pants. We’re hooking up our pets with sitters, double-checking our insurance coverage, and putting our inhibitions up on the shelf for safe keeping. And we trust you’re doing the same.

Coming up in the remaining issues: the Transportation issue, with everything you’ll need to know to get TO Burning Man, already! We’ll keep this short, since the rest is so long (sorry … such is the month of August in Burning Manlandia!), but we will occupy your time long enough to say …

We will see all your bright shining faces soon! Now, get on your horse and ride! THE MAN BURNS…IN 18 days!

DISTRICT EVERYWHERE ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS — COME BY!

Once again, the outreach groups of Burning Man (Burners Without Borders, The Black Rock Arts Foundation, Black Rock Solar and The Regional Network) have teamed up to create a unified presence on the playa: District Everywhere!

District Everywhere is housed under one large pavilion. This year, our interior space will take on the appearance of a large world map, with continents cut out of wood, set up at table height. With the assistance of our World Domination Team, guests will create miniature sculptures or flags to represent their off-playa projects and endeavors.

Together, the outreach groups will also host interactive activities, art projects, events and gatherings, all geared toward kindling ideas and generating momentum for off-playa, after-Burning Man outreach efforts.

Join us for daily BurnSide Chats, hosted lectures, salons and discussions about art, community and culture. Each outreach group will also be hosting cocktail parties and mixers specifically for their group at District Everywhere. Stop by to see the full schedule for the week.

Please visit BRAF any day of the week to learn more about recent projects and future endeavors, and to add to our community-created art installation. We will be lounging in the shade, sipping lemonade and conspiring to bring interactive art to communities beyond the playa.

Burnside Chats
Monday, August 30, 2010 – Saturday, September 4, 2010
1:00 pm – 2:30 pm, and 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm

Party Everywhere – opening reception for District Everywhere
Monday, August 30, 2010
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Annual BRAF Playa Cocktail Party
Thursday, September 2, 2010
4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

District Everywhere is located at 6:30 and Esplanade.

We’d love to see you!

ACCULTURATION VIDEO CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED

We held a contest for participants to create videos that extol and explain Burning Man’s ethos and principles to share with our community … and we’re happy to announce this year’s winners. Here they are!

http://bit.ly/b2Vat6

Thanks to everybody who submitted their videos … we had a blast reviewing them! You’re welcome and encouraged to add YOUR videos to the collection as well. Learn more here:

PORTA POTTY PROTOCOLS

It’s really this simple: If we lose porta-potties, Burning Man will stop.

We continue to talk about this because there are still problems each year from abuse, neglect, or flat out impropriety!

If an item in the pottie cannot be sifted through a small screen at the processing plant, it cannot go in the potty. For example – baby wipes, condoms, tampons, etc. And no, even the flushable baby wipes cannot go in the potties. They don’t break down fast enough to be called “flushable” in the porta potties. ONE PLY TOILET PAPER only. If you need to get rid of anything of that nature while you’re in a potty, bring a plastic baggie and take it back to camp. Yes, really.

If it doesn’t come out of your body, it doesn’t go in the potty. Period.

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

THREE TRULY “PUBLIC” PLAZAS

Along Jakarta Street near the back of the city, you will find no fewer than three new plazas: at 3:00, 6:00, & 9:00. We are holding most of the camping space around these plazas unreserved and available for the general public to develop and maintain as a Metropolis-theme experiment in spontaneous urban planning and collaboration.

So, what do you want to do with them? We can’t wait to see.

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

PRE-EVENT ICE SALES AT ARCTICA

For those who were approved to arrive pre-event to set up a registered theme camp or art installation (i.e., you have your Early Arrival Pass in hand – NO, there are no more requests), Camp Arctica will offer ice sales (only) at their Center Camp location from Thursday, August 26 – Sunday August 29, from 1pm-3pm daily.

Cool! So to speak.

USING A PERSONAL USE VIDEO CAMERA IN BRC? READ THIS

Burning Man defines “personal use” of imagery as “that which will only be shared with friends and family.” For still camera images of this nature, no registration is required, but all video cameras, even personal use, must fill out an agreement in order to capture imagery in BRC.

The form and fuller information can be found here: http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/video_cameras.html

Print out the form now and save yourself a few minutes by having it all filled out and ready when you get to the Greeters!

A NOTE ABOUT VIDEO-CAPABLE PHONES: We know that more and more people are choosing to carry their video-capable smartphones in BRC. While attaching a camera tag to these cameras can be a daunting concept, the fact is, all video cameras that will operate in BRC do need to be tagged visibly, so expect to be asked to affix the Tyvek camera tag somehow to your phone’s body (clear tape is probably the surest bet).

However, no, we don’t need to tag your camera if you’re going to put it in your glovebox and never use it on the playa, so the question at Greeters will be: “Do you plan to use your camera to obtain video footage in Black Rock City?” If you think you’ll shoot any video footage whatsoever, then yes, you must fill out this form.

So really…why? This little act on your part helps create the “safety net” of expectation that protects you from being filmed by unscrupulous videographers without approval, and that’s part of what’s kept Burning Man vital and free from those who would exploit us for prurient purposes. We truly appreciate everyone contributing by tagging their video cameras and filling out this little form.

Not sure if yours is personal use or something more? Curious if you can share your pics with your Facebook friends or post video on a personal website? More information can be found at

http://www.burningman.com/press/trademarks.html#images

AUDIO & SELF-GUIDED ART TOURS

There are over 250 pre-registered art installations, and we’re anticipating around 100 walk-in pieces once we’re on playa … it’s going to be a great year for art!

Anarchist Jim has once again created an incredible audio art tour and a paper self-guided tour for select art installations on playa this year. You can download them here:

PROMOTE YOUR CAMP WITH A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ON BMIR-FM!

BMIR-FM, 94.5 is The Voice of the Man and is the best way to let Black Rock City know about what your camp has to offer be it a fabulous bar, an event, a performance or a really cool art installation.

If someone in your camp is an audio wizard, we are now accepting pre-recorded announcements. We would LOVE to have them in hand before we leave for the playa so we can start running them on the air ASAP. Not sure how to record something ahead of time? No worries! J Kanizzle, BMIR’s Production Manager has put together this handy tutorial that shows you how to download and configure Audacity, a free audio recording program. The tutorial then takes you through the basics of creating your very own announcement.

The tutorial can be found at : http://tinyurl.com/mn55p5

Once you have something recorded please email before August 21st to: BMIR (at) Burningman (dot) com

Remember to let people know the basics : what, where and when. Please keep announcements under 60 seconds and send them to us in .mp3 or .wav format.

Can’t make the August 21st deadline? You can also put your announcements on a CD or flash drive and hand deliver them to us on the playa. BMIR is located on the Ring Road at 1:00, right between the Rangers and The Department of Mutant Vehicles.

Now if you just can’t pull this off, no worries. The BMIR Production Office will be open every day from 12N to 4PM during the event. You can come in and we’ll help you record an announcement right on the playa.

See you on the playa and remember to bring an FM radio!

PSA: PLEASE DO NOT CHARGE YOUR ELECTRONIC DEVICES AT THE CAFE

We know, you just have to keep your camera/phone/blinky glowy thingie charged at the event, and there’s no electrical service available. So you’re bringing your own power, right?

No? You’re not? Then make friends with someone who is. Or bring an inverter for your car lighter…whatever it takes. But whatever you do, please DON’T plug in your devices to charge them up at the Center Camp Cafe.

While it may be tempting to wander into the Cafe, find an outlet or an extension cord, and plug in your (whatever) electronic device(s) to charge them …don’t. This goes double for ever unplugging another cord to plug yours in. There is sensitive equipment plugged into each and every outlet in the Cafe, (we don’t build outlets we don’t need in BRC, so if there’s a cord, it’s there for someone else – not you). There are dozens of people working hard to balance an enormously tricky electrical load on a very persnickety system — all in a place known for devouring the best electrical intentions. Don’t make it worse. This is not the purpose of the power in the Cafe and these outlets are not available for participants to use. Just don’t do it.

ARE YOU A BURNER GOING TO SXSWI 2010? VOTE FOR OUR PANEL!

Are you a Burner going to the South By Southwest Interactive fest 2011 in Austin? Vote for our panel! Burning Man’s Andie Grace and Rosalie Barnes have proposed this panel to share the latest on photography at Burning Man, and our experience working with the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Creative Commons toward the evolution of digital rights in BRC. If you’re planning to attend, please register for the panel picker, and vote.

LARRY HARVEY SPEAKS ABOUT THIS YERA’S BURNING MAN THEME: METROPOLIS

PETS WHILE YOU ARE ON PLAYA

Our friend Michelle (aka Scottish, who we love dearly and wish she were coming to the playa, dammit) writes with helpful advice about your leaving your pets at home while you’re at the event:

“If your pet has a tag, change it. The new temporary tag should have the number of the pet sitter. If it doesn’t have a collar and tag, get one. They can come off when you are again taking responsibility for your pet. There is no point having your number on it while you are incommunicado.

Also, make sure you email recent pictures of your pet and any distinguishing marks to the sitter should they need to make up any lost notices. This will help them as they will already feel pretty crap about the missing pet.

Have fun out there kids.

Michelle”

HELPFUL TIP ABOUT YOUR CAR’S AIR FILTER

Dan writes:

“I have a little auto tip (if it has not already been mentioned).

As I transistion from the main road to the playa, usually waiting in a line, I get out, open the hood of my car and swap the almost new air filter with the old dirty one from last time on the playa. When I leave the playa, I do the reverse, giving me a nice clean air filter for the drive home; better performance and better fuel economy.”

COFFEE PRICE INCREASE

The whole world is feeling the economic pinch, and Burning Man is no exception. The costs involved with providing coffee on playa has increased in the last year, and so after many years we must now raise Center Camp Cafe coffee prices from $2 to $3 a cup.

Now, before you go getting too worked up with your faithful Rabbits or your nice Cafe staff about this increase or about the sale of coffee in our Center Camp in general, we ask you to please take the time to read “Commerce and Community” by Larry Harvey. This article from our 2006 newsletter dinstinctly outlines why coffee is sold at the Center Camp Cafe in the first place.

http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/2006/06_news_sum1.html

Then, recall that we’re basically running a cafe on the surface of the moon. That costs a pretty penny. Plus, the proceeds from coffee sales go to financing the construction of the Cafe itself.

BLACK ROCK CENSUS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Steven writes:

“The Black Rock Census is now recruiting volunteers for on-playa shifts!

Basics:
During the week, we need 2 volunteers from 9:30am-1:30pm every day for census form processing, and 10 volunteers on pre-burn Sunday/Monday and postburn Sunday for census setup/breakdown. More details about the shifts are below.

Contact:
Please email Steven “Indiana” Crane (stevoc (at) stanford (dot) edu) if you are interested. There will be a short follow-up survey to gauge your interest and volunteer shift availability. It is fine to request a shift with a friend, or to sign up yourself to meet a new friend! Let me know that you’re interested even if you can’t commit to a particular shift ahead of time.

More info:
The Census Camp has been administering the Black Rock Census for ten years, and our team works year-round to craft, collect, count, and compile the census and its results. Last year we collected 8,300 forms (!) which are used by the Burning Man Organization to create the best burn possible for everybody; by Burners to get a broader, more unbiased perspective on who comes and what goes down on the playa; and even bona fide scientific research. Past results are available in the afterburn reports (http://afterburn.burningman.com). And we can’t do all this without some extra help on-playa.

Daily form processing volunteers will work with our team in Center Camp and can partake in the Census Camp Metropolis Theme Days (read: snacks and drinks!) as we merrily work our way through the forms. Form processing volunteers will:
—restock the Cafe and Playa Info census kiosks
—retrieve completed census forms from the Cafe
—process forms (placing numbered stickers on collected forms and properly grouping them) in the Confidentiality Room, adjacent to Media Mecca and across the street from the Cafe. Perfect for: Those who love organization and efficiency, or enjoy some simple, methodical, meditative form processing, or particularly enjoy stacking, counting, numbering, and bunching forms.

Setup/Breakdown volunteers will help decorate the camp and the Census Wagon art car, load up the wagon for our “trap line” of cross-playa census distribution, and other tasks to get the census up and running.
Perfect for: those who like making things look FANTASTIC, who have always wanted to do some work with an art car. Some height and/or muscle would be helpful, but not necessary!

-For more details, questions, and to sign up for a shift, contact Steven ‘Indiana’ Crane at Steven .”

PIGEONOPOLIS: POOP & GROUP PHOTO ON FRIDAY

Spanky writes:

“We’re so excited to hear about happy pigeon-makers across the country making paper-mache pigeons for Pigeonopolis 2010. For example, just look at these beautiful pigeons that Sari made! http://flic.kr/p/8qgLZc We’ve also heard from some of you concerned about our cleanup plan. We are also worried about POOP (Pigeons Out Of Place), so we’ve written up a blog post to address these concerns.

http://j.mp/POOPopolis

We’ve also scheduled a Pigeonopolis group photo at 4:00pm Friday at the Man. That will help us get lots of our beloved pigeons all in the same place at once. We also ask any participants that may find stray pigeons to bring them there before Friday at 10pm.

Need Supplies?
– Balloons:
We have TONS of extra water balloons, we’d be happy to mail you some if you need them.
– Skewers:
We have a bag of 100. Need some to keep your pigeons in place? Come by Recycle Camp anytime!
– Paint:
We’ll also be bringing our iridescent paints with us to the playa, so if you want to add that extra touch to your pigeons, come by Recycle Camp. Bring beer. In aluminum cans. You know, to … uh … recycle.

Questions? Comments? We’re here (until the 20th) to help:

MUTANT VEHICLE PARADE AND REVIEW

Rod Pujante wrote us months ago saying “Hey wouldn’t it be cool to have a Mutant Vehicle parade?” And we said “Yeah! It sure would be cool. Why don’t you organize one?” And so he has. This will be really cool. Rod writes:

“Mutant Vehicle Parade & Review
Friday, September 3rd
6:30 pm – Art Cars with daytime permits
7:30 pm – Art cars with nighttime permits

Route: Center Camp to the Man and on to the Temple, on the East side of the promenade. Around the Temple and back to Center Camp along the West side of the promenade. So it’s counter-clockwise around the 6:00 and 12:00 promenades.

This will be a great chance for the Burning Public and the Mutant Vehicles to check each other out!”

However, without your help, we can’t keep up with the demand for pink tutus, body suits and fake fur coats, and all the other fashion essentials you are looking for. Please clean out your closets and donate any unused playa wear to us, so we can continue our mission to provide fashion on the playa. New this year- bring us some brown paper bags- we have someone who will cut out outfits from them. We’re located at 3:00 and Center Camp. Open daily noonish-4pm. 4TH ANNUAL BLACK ROCK CITY 5K RUN

Broken Beaver (yes, really) writes:

“So, you may have heard that there is going to be a 50K Ultra Marathon on Playa this year…. Yes, your math is right – that’s 31 miles of running on the Black Rock Desert!!! For those of you who love to express yourself through your physical fitness, specifically running, but find that a 50K is a bit too ambitious for you, especially in the middle of the ‘best week of the year,’ the 4th Annual Black Rock City 5K will be held on Wednesday, September 1st at 8:00. Starting line is near Center Camp and the Prominade – you can’t miss it. The finish line will be the same finish line as the 50K, so stick around afterwards to support and encourage those uber crazy ultra marathon runners!!! PLAYA CHOIR SEEKS PERFORMERS OF ALL TYPES

Madi writes:

“Looking for something to participate in this year? Need an experience that will help ground your burn?
Do you love to sing/play drums, keys, or percussion? Interested in having a crazy-fierce, passionate, dynamic choir director (clad in pig-tails, combat boots and as little clothing as possible) pull the music out of you like taffy? Would you like to perform with a choir/rhythm section on the playa on Sunday morning for a couple hundred exhausted, wide-open, smiling, joyful, half-naked burners who are not quite ready to enter the default world just quite yet? COME JOIN MADI’S PLAYA CHOIR! Here are the details:

We rehearse:
wed, thurs, fri and sat at 10:30 am at the Jazz Cafe, 4:30 and INNER CIRCLE (right close to center camp)

We will sing for:

Critical Tits ritual, Friday afternoon (we create a singing human entry-way for all the women who finish the ride!)
Megs’s boat, deets TBA
Our very own Sunday Celebration on Sunday morning at 11am in the Center round of Center Camp

We will learn 4 songs, plus an improvised circle song, plus a sing along for the congregation on Sunday morning. We generally do gospel/spirituals, mostly 3-4 parts, not difficult but for sure soulful! If you can not read music, it’s OK. If you can sing along with your section, you’ll learn the parts just fine! There are solo opportunities if you are interested!

This is our 5th year on the playa and we are growing like wildfire!

If you are interested, shoot me an email with your name (if you send me a picture too, I will remember your name with your face) and say hello. I’ll add you to our emails so you know what else is going on.

If you are interested, PLEASE BRING A MILK CRATE TO REHEARSAL! (unless someone out there wants to DONATE a set of choral risers to our mission) and of course, lots and lots of water, spray bottles and whatever you need to help you through a generally hot and dusty choir rehearsal.

The choir needs a rhythm section, too…we need a trap set drummer, a second keyboard player would help get me out from behind the rhodes, hand drummers/congas/djembe players and possibly a guitarist…(we have a bass player already…)

CREATE YOUR OWN ANIMATIONS FOR THE ILLUMINATRIX

This is awesome. Scottie writes:

“The Illuminatrix is an art project sponsored by the More Carrot Theme Camp which is to be located 50ft from the corner of 5:30 and Baghdad. It consists of an 2D array of 256 (16×16) ping pong balls each of which has an RGB LED that allows it to be illuminated with any colour of the rainbow. In order to make the project interactive, we’ve set up a website (www.cwd.co.uk/illuminatrix) which allows anyone to easily create animations of their own. For those that are technically minded there’s even the facility to enter JavaScript to generate animations procedurally. After you’re happy with your design, you can save it and then visit the Illuminatrix at Burning Man to see your creations on the big screen. Naturally the more patterns we get, the more successful the project will be so if you think it a worthy endevour, please send this link on to your friends.

Thanks in advance and have a great burn!

Scottie and Ben.”

CREATE YOUR OWN SEQUENCES FOR THE NEXUS PYROSPHERE SEQUENCER

This is way rad. Erin writes:

“Just wanted to spread the word about the Pyrosphere Sequencer- the interactive element of the Nexus Pyrosphere. The Pyrosphere is a large scale fire art installation with 91 flame emitters mounted all over the surface of a 23 ft geodesic sphere. Each the flame emitters are individually controlled by a computer, similiar to The Burninator, and now anyone can go online to www.akrasia.org/pyro and create sequences that we will use on the playa! Our memory banks can hold a couple hundred thousand sequences, so we are trying to get as many people as possible to make one. When you’re on the playa, you can come to Nexus and tell us what you named your pattern when you saved it, and we will play it for you!

More info on the Pyrosphere here: http://nexusorg.org/category/fire-art/pyrosphere-fire-art/

You either really do or really do not want to meet the guy with the playa name “Hand Job”. Anyway, Amy writes:

“Why let chapped lips, tired eyes and dry hands ruin your good time?

Keep an eye out for the Lubrication Ladies (Lip Service, Hungry Eyes and Hand Job) who will be roaming the playa throughout the festival.

Don’t be fooled by cheap imitations, we’ll be the ones wearing 1950’s aprons in shades of the burn.

Represent your city, your camp, your art, your tent, or just yourself!

Participants (open to all shes, zes, and hes) will reveal their unique inner beauty in 2 categories:
1) The One Minute (no)Talent Competition: No rules, everyone has a talent – be it a stupid party trick or a fine art!
2) Interview: Do they do it for world peace, the children, or for the puppies?

All participants are beautiful and everyone wins by participating. Please come with a sash and a tiara, and a gift to donate to the Beauty Queen’s Gift Box, which will be given to participants. Hosted by StacycatS, the original self-proclaimed beauty queen, in her first on-playa event since 2006!

He’s decided to take a break this year, but for some folks this event has become a staple of their BM experience and the ride MUST go on! FIVE camps have stepped up this year to host pub stops. BIG BLUE MARBLE SEEKS ARTISTS PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE AWARENESS

Vanessa writes:

“Big Blue Marble is an environmental non-profit that is headed to the Playa! We have already been vetted by through the Media Mecca approval process and we are headed to Burning Man to film interviews with artists looking at the connection between environmental awareness and creativity. BBM seeks to educate others on environmental issues through art and creative mediums. We are interested in looking at the positive change comes through Burning Man, the art created, and the diversity of forms this takes.

We are making a call out to artists who use their craft to create sustainable awareness. Recycled art, Spoken Word, Sculpture, Visual Painting, Photography, or Art expressed simply through the way you live your Life – whatever your form may be, we want to hear from you!

Our goal is not to simply document this event; we want to hear the personal stories of those who come, why they come and why Burning Man has turned into a movement, branching off into regional networks and for some people become an intricate part of their lifestyle. The project is an interactive project that is about connecting people. It is about showing people the power of community and art, and how both individual and collective action can make a very important environmental difference. We are looking to talk to people who are both environmentally aware and are using their art or daily actions to make an environmental and/or communal difference.

For more information on Big Blue Marble check out our website at www.bigbluemarbleinc.org

If you’re interested in being interviewed please contact Vanessa at vanessa (at) bigbluemarbleinc (dot) org sending along information about your creative process, artistic and sustainable views, and where we can find you on the Playa!

Thanks so much! Cheers,
Vanessa”

VETERAN PHOTOGRAPHER SEEKS COLLABORATORS WHO LOVE IMPROV

William writes:

“Purpose: to help with art photography project — a Legacy project spanning the first 21 years of Burning Man. We’ll work each afternoon and evening.

Don’t worry, I don’t need a photo assistant to help with gear. It’s much better than that. I need theatre-people, radical socializers, natural performers who love to energize juicy social interactions among burners, and with their permission and interest, to be photographed. These aren’t posed pictures, this is spontaneous play with a few ground rules, or cues, kind of call and response, like a theatresports game, like an ole-time church full of footstampers, or in our case, celebrants.

If you are comfortable and adept in public, theatrical, bit of an improviser, schmoozer, bit of a ham also, love to interact with folks — and can direct without seeming to do so — I love ya! Lets collaborate on making beautiful work happen and dispense joy and laughs in our wake.

Hours: I need someone(s) every day from mid-afternoon to late. Perhaps a tag team of folks, pass the baton, who all like to cruise the playa with a purpose to make art as we go!!

I’m one of the original 80-90 burners on that first year on the playa, 1990. I got involved earlier, having met Larry that last night when we couldn’t burn on Baker Beach. I’ve been fortunate to attend and photograph BM every year since. My calling is to create what I’m calling a Legacy Project, an archive of fine art photography I’ve shot at the event every single year, and counting. For the first 15 years I shot film in medium format, 35mm and 8×10. Today of course it’s digital.

For a taste, check a suite of images I shot solo from 2008 (currently the only body of work on BM I have on the web)>

also, my brand new business web site>

I do have a ticket to share! if you still need one. I can help in other ways too. You’ll receive credit in the final gallery work and books and mucho kudos on site! I lost my temper a decade ago. I’m a good director with years of experience and I know what I want to accomplish. Give me a buzz!

It’s been a really inspiring time, watching our community support itself to make wonderful things happen. There are a LOT of successfully-funded projects as a result, and you can see those, and those that could still use some help on our Support a Project page:

“Suspended Animation is better then ever and returning to Black Rock City for our third year! With a revamped schedule, more riggers then you can shake a stick at (we tried), and plenty of rope shenanigans, we look forward to bringing our unique brand of performance art back to Burning Man!

Part of our preparation this year has meant repairing and replacing components of our performance space and we could use your help! Each donation we receive will go directly towards our new salad bowl technology and reinforcing our shade for all of our guests.

By supporting our project at http://kck.st/duo2An, you can also receive awesome swag including “special” treatment, sew-on patches, or your own rope!

Even if you can’t donate, we want to encourage anyone who is interested to come check us out at Baghdad and 7:30 on the playa. You can also find out more about us and our events at http://www.suspendedanimationcrew.com/

BURNING MAN FILM FESTIVAL/PLAYA LAUNCH PARTY READY FOR RENO

RENO, NV – Just in time before this year’s Burning Man event, The Knitting Factory is proud to host the official Burning Man Film Festival / Playa Launch Party on Thursday, August 19th from 4-10pm.

Three award winning documentaries will exclusively be seen on several big screens from 4-8pm. The Burning Man Film Festival is offered in part as a fundraising effort to support the current art installation “Duel Nature” by Kate Raudenbush – currently on display on the Riverwalk in downtown Reno, Nevada. The Reno Burners LLC group will also benefit from proceeds from the film festival and related sales.

Full length features will be shown, including:

“Burning Man” (1991) by Larry Harvey
“Burning Man MCMXCVII” (1997) by Chuck Cirino
“Beyond Black Rock” (2002) by Mike Wilson & Damon Brown

The Playa Launch Party starts at 8pm, with dance music from DJ’s direct from the playa, electric poi spinner, hoopers, and and amazing line up of surprise guests, activities and entertainment not to be missed. Additional short films will be shown throughout the evening to welcome seasoned burners and “newbies” to the art and culture that is Burning Man.

Tickets to the festival are just $10 at the door for those in costume, and $15 without Burning Man costumes.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Black Rock Arts Foundation’s current installation in downtown Reno, as well as establishing an ongoing fund to develop more locally placed art installations, from Burning Man, throughout northern Nevada.

“This Film Festival and Pre-Playa Launch Party is a great way to experience the rich history and culture of Burning Man, for both loyal “Burners” and those who have never been to the event. With the Knitting Factory’s generous support, we are planning a great night of film, fun, and Burning Man culture,” said Maria Partridge, Reno project liaison for BRAF and Advisory Board member.

“We are proud to sponsor and host this cultural event just before Burning Man which happens the week before Labor Day.” said Dean Hanson, The Knitting Factory (Reno) General Manager. “Burning Man’s rich history and culture offer great art to northern Nevada, and we are eager to support the Black Rock Arts Foundation’s installations and future plans here in Reno”.

WHEN: Thursday, August 19th, 2010: 4pm to 10pm
WHERE: The Knitting Factory, 211 North Virginia Street, Reno, NV
WHAT: Burning Man Film Festival: benefiting the Black Rock Arts Foundation and Burning Man Reno. Knitting Factory bars will available for attendees 21+ years old.

PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE ROUND – PANORAMICS BY BRAD MILTON

This is pretty neat. Brad Milton writes:

“I’d like to share my photo gallery:

www.bp2e.net/album.html

I hope your readers might see these photos and like them enough to support my project ‘Living Working Burning Man’ ( http://kck.st/9EDgl4 ) which will document the fabric of Black Rock City for this year of Metropolis: the Life of Cities.

Project brief:
It is my intention to photograph as many of the outstanding camps of Black Rock City as I can, and to photograph them ‘in the round’ – broad panoramas capturing all of the activity in the space, as well as the space itself, all in an instant. The resulting portfolio will document the effort put forward by the campers and the incredible environments they create. A fitting response to this years theme: Metropolis – Life of Cities.

Clearly I think it’s a worthy project. I hope the burning Man community does as well.”
