{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** As we approach the Burnal Equinox on March 5th – the nadir (zenith? you be the judge) between the Burns – it’s time to anticipate the crest of the mountain, and strap in for the ride back to Black Rock City. We’ve got our project registration forms live and ready for you to fill out, opportunities to participate, and more. Read on for details.

We’re seeing more and more people excitedly posting pictures of their newly-acquired Burning Man tickets on our Twitter feed (www.twitter.com/burningman) and Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/burningman), and artists are announcing their intention to bring incredible (of course!) artwork to the playa this year, so yeah … game on, people!

As for the Burning Man culture-at-large, well, we highly recommend checking out the Burning Blog these days …there’s a bevy of new contributors offering a wide variety of perspectives on Burners and their actions out in the world, and gotta say, there are some incredible stories going up almost daily the last few weeks. (http://blog.burningman.com)

Oh, you wanna see something REALLY cool? We always did wonder what Black Rock City would look like from the air at night when everything’s going absolutely bonkers, but we’ve always been outta luck since BRC’s airspace is a no-fly zone at night. But check this out … photographer Cameron Grant spent HIS Burning Man capturing this shot of Black Rock City on Burn night from a mountaintop — 4.5 miles away: http://flic.kr/p/9k882h. Can we just say: WOW.

The Man burns in LESS THAN 200 DAYS, PEOPLE! 187 to be exact. See you soooon….

BLACK ROCK SOLAR’S NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Black Rock Solar, after an exhaustive search process, is proud to announce the appointment of Patrick “Paddy” McCully to the role of Executive Director. He brings a wealth of valuable experience in the environmental non-profit arena that will help to advance Black Rock Solar’s mission to expand the use of renewable energy through installation, art, education, and job training.

We’re honored that Patrick has come aboard at BRS, as his experience & background is quite a story on its own. To wit: 17 years with the nonprofit International Rivers, (http://www.internationalrivers.org/); 1 book (“Silenced Rivers,” an “industry-rattling masterpiece” about the global impact of dams) translated into five languages; six years serving as that organization’s Executive Director… and yes, 8 (or maybe it’s 9, he’s lost count!) years as a citizen of Black Rock City. Those are some good numbers, and we’re proud to have him join our extended family.

“TRIBES OF BURNING MAN” HITS THE BOOKSHELVES

The book launch party for Steven T. Jones’ new book “The Tribes of Burning Man” was flush with Burning Man community, including many of the real-life people featured in his book. If you’re interested in an exploration of some of the various cultural sub-groups that Burning Man has spawned, collected or inspired, as well as Burning Man’s cultural outreach efforts, this book is for you. You can pick up your copy on Steve’s website here: http://www.steventjones.com

Described as a chronicle of “how Burning Man is transforming American society,” Jones’ “Tribes” includes full reprints of his immersive series of reportage for the San Francisco Bay Guardian, which covered the activities of several core Burning Man “tribes,” from the Flaming Lotus Girls to Burners Without Borders…in the book, Jones takes up his pen to round out the story of the community connections between some of the sound art camps, creative communities, cultural criticisms (BORG2, anyone?), and philosophical highlights of Burning Man’s history.

Add in a healthy dollop of his own experiences at the event rounding out his assessment of Burning Man — to Jones, this is no mere week in the desert, but a cultural movement moving far beyond the playa. (We couldn’t agree more.) Check it out and let us know what you think!

THE WORLD’S LARGEST CLOCK TO BE DISPLAYED AT BURNING MAN 2011

The Colfax Record published this article about Burning Man artist Jim Bowers, who’s heading up a team of laser technology scientists and artists in designing and creating the world’s largest working clock to display at Burning Man. It’ll be a 40-foot tower holding three high-powered lasers, each of which will serve as the clock’s hour, minute and second hands circling around 12 illuminated towers strategically placed around the perimeter of the city.

TROJAN HORSE CASTING CALL

Of course this is happening. Eric writes:

“One of the most memorable art projects at Burning Man 2011 will be the monumental, all-wood Trojan Horse. Standing 50’ feet tall and weighing 25 tons with a bar inside, the beast will be towed by the masses from near the Esplanade through the Gates of Troy to the Temple of Dionysus on Friday at sundown.

The procession of this massive piece of interactive and mobile art will be filmed from the air and the playa. We are looking for Burners to help pull the beast and serve in other roles. We are recruiting for the Retinue of Dionysus, a loose troupe of wild women and horny men who will lead the procession dressed as satyrs, maenads, nymphs, and followers of Pan. We are asking drummers and brass players, individually and as ensembles to join in performing the march and processional composed for this event.

Costumed Greek Gods and Goddesses are sought to bring all their powers to bear on achieving these momentous tasks. We also welcome Roman God(desses) if they accept their Greek names. Once the Horse passes through the Gates of Troy, a wild celebration will begin. Amazons and Apollo’s archers (soliciting both) will send flaming arrows into the beast and in a spectacular fire with pyrotechnics, the horse will be consumed, highlighting an evening of pure pandemonium. We need Burners to play the roles of characters in the Trojan war, including Greek and Trojan warriors. Also seeking construction workers to build the beast in San Francisco and on the playa.

FLAME EFFECTS CLASS FOR THE ARTIST – ATLANTA, GA – APRIL 23-24

(NOTE: This class is independently organized and is NOT being presented by Burning Man)

“Atlanta is burning again!

Flame Effects for the Artist-April 23rd and 24th in Atlanta Georgia.

Hot off the heels of a great flame effect class in Detroit we are glad to announce a new class date in Atlanta! We had a full class and a big stand by list so we have added another class in April.

Attention all artists who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their art! This class is for you…

Charlie Smith and the Art of Such n Such artists collective will be hosting & join forces with other regional fire artists for this exciting two day seminar held at the Sparseland Studios in Atlanta Georgia…….

The workshop will be teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel based flame effects into your work. This class is great for the beginning fire artist and always has something new for the “expert.” Each one of these classes has drawn participants who have had all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions and projects that have been both fun and challenging.

The first day will consist of a classroom session where we will discuss subjects including:

NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines including NFPA 54 and 58 the LP gas codes.
NFPA 160 Flame Effects Before a Live Audience and other codes.

We will also examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts. Of course, we closely examine the wonders of LP gas with the amazing clear propane cylinder. We will then finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects, fuel mortars, pilot lights, hot surface igniters and much more. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands on materials.

The second day will be a shop day where we will put what we have learned into action and create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials on hand. The best part of the class is the assembly of the effect so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated. This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating a small flame element into their work, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level.

Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for more than 10 years, and Eric Smith, Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas. We will also have displays of fire art from several local fire artists!

——————————————-

The cost of this 2-Day class will be $120.

Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm.

Printed materials and a crappy but filling lunch of whatever cheap food we can get will be provided each day.

Come and join us for this weekend to hang out with other fire artists and have a blast, no pun intended. We have room for 40 and will be taking walk up registration the day of the event, space permitting. Email your name to Fuelmaster (at) gmail (dot) com to reserve your spot.”
