Great news!

Burning Man has once again passed (with flying colors) the annual site inspection performed by the BLM! This is a testament to our community’s efforts to Leave No Trace. This year’s site inspection was delayed a loooong time because the playa’s been underwater (or snow) since last September – and there’s still standing water in some locations, although for the most part early returns are that once dry the surface is awesomely, beautifully hard packed like only a really wet winter can do. Want to see how the inspection goes down? We’ve got the story — with some great pictures — here on the Burning Blog:

http://bit.ly/lxSkku

While we’re on the subject of the Burning Blog, you should know that our bloggers have been blowing that thing UP lately. Click on over and check it out … from tips and tricks to the latest from BRAF to a brilliant piece from new blogger Caveat Magister, there’s some really great content waiting for you:

http://blog.burningman.com

Coming up soon (June 18th to be exact), we’ve got the official Burning Man Precompression event (details below) to start your wheels turning … we hope to see you there, and if you can’t make it, we hope you’re creating your own pre-playa celebration in your neck of the woods. It’s time to start ramping up, people!

The Man burns in 87 days!

HGH EMS RESCUE TO PROVIDE MEDICAL SERVICES AT BURNING MAN EVENT

Humboldt General Hospital’s EMS Rescue Department will join forces with Black Rock City LLC to provide medical services on the Black Rock Desert next Labor Day weekend.

“With more than 48,000 people, there is an obvious need for a wide range of medical services,” said Humboldt General Hospital Emergency Medical Services Rescue Director Pat Songer. “We feel confident that our competent, compassionate skill set will be a great complement and partnership with Black Rock City’s Emergency Services Department.”

The Black Rock City Emergency Services Department (ESD) also provides medical, fire, mental health and communications services in the temporary city. Earlier this spring, HGH EMS Rescue signed a five-year contract with Burning Man officials to provide a municipal style EMS system much like those in most other cities in the United States.

Not only will HGH EMS Rescue provide advanced life-support ambulance service within Black Rock City, but Songer said his group will staff the medical clinic that will be open 24/7 during the entirety of the event and handle all ground transports from the event site to Reno hospitals.

More than 300 doctors, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians and other medical professionals will staff the 2,000-square-foot medical clinic during this year’s Burning Man. The mobile unit will include 32 beds and six advanced life-support ambulances will be on call around the clock.

Jim Parrish, CEO/Administrator of Humboldt General Hospital, which operates the ambulance service, said all 250+ members of the HGH team stand ready to assist with HGH EMS Rescue’s efforts at this year’s Burning Man.

Humboldt General Hospital Emergency Medical Services Rescue is one of only five CAAS-certified ambulance services in Nevada. The agency has been hailed by EMS Magazine as the standard-bearer for rural emergency medical services in the United States, not only for members’ medical response efforts but also for their rescue and hazardous materials response, as well as tactical training and support.

The group operates one of the nation’s leading ground transportation services and was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal for their innovative use of portable ultrasound in the field.

For more information on Humboldt General Hospital EMS Rescue’s partnership with Black Rock City LLC to provide medical services during Burning Man 2011, please contact HGH EMS Rescue Director Pat Songer at (775) 623-5222, ext. 260.

If you are a Nevada licensed medical professional (EMT, Paramedic, RN, NP, PA, MD) interested in working with HGH, please call or email bmmedstaff (at) hghospital (dot) ws to request an application or for more information.

FLUX BRINGS BURNING MAN TO TED

Jess Hobbs and the kids from The Flux Foundation write to share this awesome news:

“The Flux Foundation, creators of the Temple of Flux at Burning Man in 2010, and now an arts nonprofit building large scale art through community, just brought Burning Man and big art to TED. TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. It brings together “the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes or less).”

In April, TED opened its first auditions to be a speaker at their annual conference in Long Beach, CA, in 2012, a coveted experience that has previously been by invitation only. Of the over 500 applicants, the Flux Foundation was chosen to audition in New York City, along with 16 other brilliantly creative people. On May 24, 2011, Flux shared the stage with some truly incredible people — musicians, astrophysicists, artists, innovators, makers, side-splitting satirists and so much more. They wowed the audience with the wonders of the Temple of Flux, Burning Man, big art, collaboration and participation: right in the middle of their 5 minute talk they engaged the audience in a participatory experience that everyone could be part of.

To learn more about their talk at TED and the wonders they are creating right now, visit:

HEXAYURTS JUST GOT EVEN BETTER: TALLER AND EASIER TO BUILD

Get your playa shelter on! Julie Danger writes:

“Procrastinators, it’s time to get real: what are you going to camp in? Your fabulous dusty butt needs a home that’s party worthy and that earns you all the pride of something you constructed yourself!

In 2010, you saw dozens of hexayurts (shiny, geometric and aerodynamic) and yes– they’re just as awesome on the inside. They are dust-proof, spacious, relatively sound-dampening, cool in the day and warm at night. There are sexy new designs that increase the amount of standing room. The building technique just got a whole lot easier too: no longer do you need to assemble the hexayurt like a giant 3D jigsaw puzzle on playa: pre-fabricate it at home, and pop it up in an hour once you hit the dust.

The updated do it yourself information is written just for Burners: http://www.appropedia.org/Hexayurt_playa

Let’s not forget all the other great things to camp in: here’s the Burning Blog on do it yourself shelters and cooling systems http://bit.ly/gAKlYf

41,000 ESPADRILLES LOOKING TO BECOME PART OF AN ART PROJECT

Love the effort this Burner is making to divert potential art-making materials from the landfill … hope somebody can find a way to turn these into art! She writes:

“HI!!

Recently the company I work for received 41,000 pairs of shoes that are deemed un-wearable and un-recyclable. We are looking at having to put them in a landfill. I feel we, as artists, can find a better use for them. Aren’t we all always looking for free material we can use or take apart and use parts of?

I challenge you to open your imagination and see what you can do with Espadrilles shoes. There’s 2 kinds, slip ons with an open toe and a slide.

If you can use 100, 1000, 10,000 or whatever you think you need, please let me know.

Most importantly, this will greatly affect Mother Earth!!

Thank You!

CENTER CAMP CAFE SOUND AND PERFORMANCE VOLUNTEER CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The Center Camp Cafe stages offer, without citation or reference, the most strange and eclectic gathering of talent in the world. It brings instruments and musicians to audiences that cannot always be predicted or described, and it services the ears and eyes of Black Rock City for 24 hours a day, every day of the event. This herculean task cannot be done without the assistance of the community, and we implore you to join us at the stage. We need a wide range of talents for a variety of duties. Three duties, in fact.

Stage managers wrangle the talent, keep the stage (somewhat) organized and on time, and manage the big picture of our little stage.

Gear Gods build up and tear down the stage, very quickly, very often; you need to have a basic knowledge of how rigs work, where cords plug, and speak a bit of musician-ese.

Sound Engineers run the board. They fondle the knobs and caress the dials. Sound can be funny out there; the engineer needs to hear the dust caked speaker and make it sing, not cough.

If you want to grace us with your skills and presence, email themitch (at) burningman (dot) com. Let him know what position suits your fancy and when you want to work. From there, we’re sure something strange but appropriate will occur.

EVAPOTRON WORKSHOPS

A perennial favorite returns! Larry Breed writes:

“Life on the playa needs fresh water, and thus life on the playa inevitably produces wastewater. Last year in Black Rock City, burner-constructed evapotrons eliminated 500 to 1000 gallons of graywater every day.

With your help, we’ll have even more evapotrons at work in 2011. Start by looking at two proven evapotron designs at http://www.evapotrons.info> : the Gray-B-Gon and the Pumped Cascade. You’ll also find a Construction Guide suitable for your garage workbench, a summer workshop schedule, and a guide for holding a Gray-B-Gon construction workshop in your area.

What’s a workshop like? It’s like a party, but more focused; it’s like a class, but more fun. For some participants, it’s their first experience at actually building something for Burning Man. You will likely learn some techniques with wood, wire, and other homely materials that will have you thinking about future projects.

I will conduct two Gray-B-Gon workshops this summer: 11 June in Willitts and 16 July in Oakland. Participants will pay a parts fee of $62, and will depart with an intriguing and useful device.

Please contact me, ember, to reserve a space. Helpful friends are welcome, too.”

RITES OF PASSAGE: HOW DID YOU LOSE YOUR VIRGINITY?

Esa writes to invite you to participate in this cool creative project:

“Hello Fellow Burners!

I want to know how you lost your virginity (however you might define that)! If you are willing to share the narrative of how your cherry was popped, draw or hand write it on a 8.5×11 page of paper (you can use more than one page) and send it to P.O. Box 3883, Berkeley, CA 94703 Don’t forget to leave room in the margin because I will be binding them all later! I am really looking for your subjective experience, using all of your senses. I will be compiling your contribution with others as part of a larger project about that rite of passage.

Thanks and keep on rockin the default world!

-Esa”

MUSIC VIDEO YEARBOOKS

CareFactorNil writes:

“Hi there!

Got 3 “music video yearbooks” that I hope you’ll enjoy that I did as an art project this year. I got all the burners we could to sing a word or line from 3 of my favourite songs which all have a has a Burning Man feel or ethos to them. I’ve edited them together using the original music dubbed on top.

There may be a couple of local faces you recognise in there too…
