Happy 25th Anniversary to Burning Man! On June 21, 1986, the first Burning Man was burned on Baker Beach in San Francisco. 25 years later, we’re going stronger than ever! Happy birthday to all of us! Onward!

Things are piling up in the JRS inbox these days, and we’re going WEEKLY from here on out, folks. It’s gonna get nutty up in here! One of our favorite times of the JRS year is when all the awesome, sordid and wacky opportunities for playa participation start flowing in … inevitably as we’re cutting and pasting, we’re nodding our heads, goin’: “Boy, I love this community.”

It’s nice to be reminded that Burning Man is one of the very few places where we get blank check permission to fly whatever freak flag we wanna run up the ol’ pole, and there’s a whole community of people eager to salute it. So send us what you got … and we’ll add it to the growing collection of “yep, nice one.”

As you can see by the table of contents, this JRS is jam-packed with participation opportunities, but don’t let that distract you from the important news items we’ve got for you too, OK? OK.

And remember … we’re gonna repeat this repeatedly, so get used to it: Burning Man tickets will NOT be sold at the Gate this year, so if you’re planning on buying tickets, get ’em now.

Giddyup!

EPLAYA MAINTENANCE DOWNTIME POSTPONED

So, we were planning on taking down our beloved (but gasping) ePlaya BBS (http://eplaya.burningman.com) for upgrade/maintenance on June 20, some delays in the preparations for this have forced us to reschedule. We’ve targeted the new downtime as June 27th, “come hell or high water.”

Should the hell or high water in fact overwhelm us, we’ll let you know. Our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused….but we look forward to a great new ePlaya!

Oh…that’s: http://eplaya.burningman.com

HOW TO BUY TICKETS FROM A THIRD PARTY, RESELL YOUR TICKETS, AND SPOT A SCAM

If you’re going to be reselling your Burning Man ticket or buying one from a third party (as in, not http://tickets.burningman.com or one of our authorized Walk-In Ticket Outlets), we want to make sure you do so safely, and avoid getting scammed.

Cuz let’s face it, nobody likes being scammed. Especially when you’re broiling in 100-degree heat on the edge of the Black Rock Desert, being told by our Gate staff that you’re in fact holding a counterfeit ticket in your hand, which isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on and no, you can’t come into Black Rock City.

So we’ve posted information on how to safely buy tickets from a third party, resell your tickets, and spot a counterfeit ticket. Read it, use it, and spread the word:

http://tickets.burningman.com/#buysell

THE TOWN OF EMPIRE OFFICIALLY BECOMES A GHOST TOWN

Empire, the town next door to Gerlach, was the country’s last “company town”. Owned entirely by US Gypsum (USG), the town has officially become a ghost town as of June 20, after USG stopped operations at its Sheetrock plant, the town’s sustaining economic engine and reason for being.

We are sad to see Empire disappear in the wake of the recession, but we’re glad to see that the majority of its residents have successfully relocated and resituated.

Here’s a good article on the Empire story from the Christian Science Monitor: http://bit.ly/kLYuHn

The Empire Store is expected to stay in business at least through this year’s Burning Man event.

Burning Man’s official statement on Empire can be found here: http://bit.ly/gVqr99

GERLACH WILL BE SELLING POTABLE WATER DURING BURNING MAN

Trixie, our intrepid Gerlach Office Manager, passed along this incredibly useful information:

“The Town of Gerlach will be selling potable water for filling up RVs and water tanks. We will have ample filling stations in front of the Gerlach Community Center at 410 Cottonwood Street, with directional signs located as you enter town on Main Street.

Our rates are .50/gallon up to 100 gallons, .45/gallon for sales above 100 and less than 200 gallons, and .40/gallon for sales larger than 200 gallons.

You asked and we listened: WE WILL HAVE CONTAINERS!! Call today to reserve your filled containers ranging in size from 5 gallons to 15 gallons. There will be a limited amount available and you dont want to miss this one stop shopping opportunity.

Our filling station will be open August 26th August 31st. The hours for operation will be 9:00 am to 1:00 am. However, due to high demand we will be open 24 hours on Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th, 2011. We are only able to accept cash; however, there will be an ATM machine available for your convenience. Our office can be contacted at 775-557-2601 or gerlachgid (at) yahoo (dot) com with any questions or to arrange fill-ups prior to August 26th.

Remember: Water weighs 8 lbs. per gallon, and by buying your water in Gerlach you will avoid paying fuel costs to transport your water from Reno or even farther. Save gas!

PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION ON TO ANY REGIONAL, CAMP, or other BURNING MAN LIST YOU MIGHT BE ON!

Sherry Carter aka Trixi”

DESERT TO DREAM: A DOZEN YEARS OF BURNING MAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Barb Traub is relaunching her fantastic photography book … and the relaunch/signing party is scheduled for Thursday, July 7th from 5-8pm at The McLoughlin Gallery, 49 Geary, Ste 200 in San Francisco.

The book is now 12 years instead of decade with 16 more pages, 2 dozen new photographs, plus increased saturation/contrast on a number of the pix. There’s also an added postscript by veteran burner D.S. Black along with the contributions from filmmaker Les Blank, Burning Man founder Larry Harvey, Star Trek’s Spock Leonard Nimoy, and poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

IAWOKE PSYCHOLOGY E-BOOK GIFTED TO BURNERS

Jeff wrote to let us know he’ll be gifting his psychology e-book to Burners for a limited time, given that he feels Burners would particularly appreciate its content. Perhaps so; we thought we’d let you decide that for yourselves. He writes:

“It gives me great pleasure to offer my psychology e-book app iAwoke to my fellow Burners as a gift. By illuminating the inner programs (cognitive shemas) that govern our thoughts, feelings and actions, iAwoke helps psychonauts transcend the constraints of reflexive responses. iAwoke will help the citizens of Black Rock City more fully recognize how Art, both when observed and especially when created, releases personal potential by freeing the mind to grow in novel directions. iAwoke will be available for free download in the app section of the iTunes store until June 28, 2011.”

TRAINING FOR A (R)EVOLUTION SPEAKER SERIES

We know you’ve been working hard this year, instituting changes within organizations, individuals and art! SO come talk about all the great stuff you are doing. Proposals are now being accepted for Training for a (R)evolution, a speaker series at Center Camp Cafe dedicated to conveying ideas, events, research, intellectual endeavors, collective political movements, synthetic analyses, and/or other intellectual trajectories pertaining to the theme(s). The series will be held between the hours of 9am-11am Tuesday through Sunday on the Spoken Word Stage. Send Proposals to speakerseries (at) burningman (dot) com.

The Training for a (r)evolution talks will be brief, well structured and intimate. Talks will be 5-15 minutes long followed by a short, moderated Q & A.

General Burning Man ethos and values must be upheld: no promotions of products, corporations, political candidates, or rigid partisanship. We want to create a space for you to articulate your visions/ideas/projects to the larger Burning Man community.

Proposals should include:
– An outline of the proposed talk and how it relates to the theme of the talks (“Training for a (R)evolution” and/or “Rites of Passage”): this should include a thesis, main points, bullet points, etc
– A list of credentials/expertise/references (whether through work, personal experience, education, etc)
– How the talk may be interactive (besides the Q+A format). Will there be diagrams/art/exercises and thought experiments to lead the audience through? This part of the proposal is extremely important for we do not have media available to utilize: no projectors, no handouts (MOOP), no computers, etc and we are after all at Burning Man.
-Length of talk whether 5-15 minutes (If you have a longer talk, please submit that despite the length as well, though be mindful that we may ask you to condense it)

Length of Proposal:
A page, give or take, would be appropriate.

Send Proposals to speakerseries (at) burningman (dot) com.

EXHIBIT YOUR ART ON THE CENTER CAMP CAFE GALLERY WALL

E writes:

“Center Camp Cafe is looking for muralists and artists to contribute to the Fence Gallery! Yup, once again the Cafe has over 200′ of plywood fencing to beautify PRIOR to the event. Muralists must be able to create their artwork a few days before the gates open and Cafe is also looking for artists who want to exhibit existing work on the fence. Interested? Good! Contact the Fence Gallery Coordinator, “E.” at esugar2601 (at) yahoo (dot) com. Please include examples of your work.

Remember: Center Camp Cafe starts caffeinating the BRC community on the first day of the event – Monday, August 29th – therefore all artwork associated with The Fence Gallery MUST be completed/installed by midnight on Sunday August 28th.”

FEED THE ARTISTS ONLINE RESERVATION SYSTEM NOW LIVE

From Melissa, head of Mindful Feeding at Feed the Artists:

“I am very excited to announce that FtA’s Online Reservation System is now live, and artists can now register for another magical year of food alchemy on the playa at www.feedtheartists.net!

Feed the Artists is a communal art grant through food.

It is an opportunity for the Burning Man community, as represented by all of it’s citizens, to support our artists who help make Burning Man the sensory spectacle that brings us back year after year. By sharing a meal together, we can all grant the gift of nourishment of body, mind, and spirit, and participate in the true creation of community!

Those of us who run the Feed the Artists program know that there is magic to be had around a dinner table, and are moved by the spiritual power found with the limitless levels of love, gratitude and friendship that can develop as people gather to break bread together.

Our gift to you is to facilitate the infrastructure needed to allow as many people to participate in this magical food alchemy as possible: Last year we worked with over 50 theme camps to share more than 1500 meals with artists and their support teams.

This year, we have expanded our program so that artists can sign up to be invited to share a meal during BOTH setup week and burn week. We hope that this expansion will allow those artists who can’t get away during setup week as well as those citizens who aren’t on-playa before burn week to connect together and create radical, beautiful and amazing experiences all centered around a shared meal. That’s what we call Radical Collaboration!

The FtA online reservation system is now open for all artists at this years Burning Man event, both funded and not, to register!

Please visit www.feedtheartists.net and click on “artists register” and fill out all required fields of information. We built the system to integrate seamlessly with your existing Facebook account, so its super easy and you won’t even need a new password!

The information you provide will then be available for theme camps to peruse and decide who they’d like to invite to dinner. Once you have been invited, you will receive a confirmation from FtA listing when and where the dinner will take place and the contact information of your hosts. It will then be up to you to contact your hosts and work out all the details from there. Of course, we’ll follow up with you on the playa to make sure everything is still as planned. It’s that simple!

Any questions? Email us at: communications (at) feedtheartists (dot) net

And please like our Facebook page to stay informed about theme camp registration, as well as the many other resources that FtA is bringing to the citizens of Black Rock City this year, including burn week workshops, a collaborative on-playa refrigeration opportunity, a Reno Area Local Producers Resource Guide, and more!

Dusty love,
Melissa”

SEX WITH THE GODS PLAY AND WORKSHOP SEEKS ACTOR & ACTRESS / FACILITATOR

Yes, really. George writes:

“I have a workshop about human intimacy that’s a gloss on the Psyche and Eros myth (by Apuleius). So far I’ve got someone working on it with me, a playscript which I wrote from which the workshop will spring, a need for another actor/facilitator and an actress/facilitator, and some idea of how to do this for burning man, for which I have tickets and a dearth of information about how to manage. Can you list this SEX WITH THE GODS intimacy/relationship workshop? Not sure where or when…..I’m George Tynan Crowley at tynanlayahoo.com.”

MARTIAL ARTISTS! THE BLACK ROCK KWOON AND DOJO WANTS YOU!

God we love Burning Man. Kannik writes:

“Our red shrine returns for its second year. Within the temple we are students of motion. Martial arts, qi gong, meditation, and other pursuits are welcome here. Beneath the shade we don our saffron robes and practice the form and fluidity of mind and body. Master and novice alike find ways to hone their skills and cultivate their self. We are serenity. We are ferocity. And when our minds are clear and we are as one with the Zen of the universe itself… the sacred gong rings out and we spring into motion, delivering fresh baked goods from the camp next door to various points around the city!

Do you have a passion for martial arts and acrobatics? Do you seek a shrine in which to practice your meditation? We are looking for people interested in teaching martial classes, leading meditation sessions, and tearing across the desert at a dead run, orange robes flowing, a battle flag strapped to their back, and a basket full of baked goods, or beer, or wine, or coffee to be delivered from one of our sibling camps to a designated location.

Join our Google Group to learn or teach or deliver or all three… http://groups.google.com/group/black-rock-kwoon

CALL OUT FOR BURNING MAN VIDEO FOOTAGE FROM ANY YEAR

Mike writes:

“Hello Fellow Burners. I need your amazing Burning Man footage!

I am creating a unique participant driven documentary on the festival. A collaborative film using footage gathered from the participants themselves. There are hundreds of hours of amazing footage of the festival sitting around on shelves, seen only by a few friends of the people that shot it. I plan to “Capture” as many of these video gems as I can and create a documentary that ties them all together into an amazing, musical, emotional, fun, visual story. I will augment the footage from the past with new interviews I will shoot at the festival this year of those that contributed footage reflecting on their experience at the event over the years. If you aren’t attending this year, I will arrange for a skype interview to be included if you like. Depending on the amount of footage I get, I could create several films encompassing a few years of BM at a time.

As a professional documentarian and 17 year veteran of the event, I have worked on several great documentaries about Burning Man, including a similar concept on the 2005 festival that I am finishing now that many of you contributed to (THANKS!). It’s amazing how well the random footage fell into place. I believe this is a new way to create a film by the participants with a global perspective of hundreds or even thousands of people. An innovative and appropriate approach to capture a gathering based on radical self expression and art. Kind of like being there.

So if you have great footage, especially the early years, please contact me at communitycamerabm (at) gmail (dot) com. I am looking for anything interesting and visual. Art, Art cars, BRC way of life, Centercamp, dancing and of course the burns! Also people. People being funny, introspective, interacting with art, building art, making camp, even interviews shot onsite. But in the spirit of the concept, I will take anything, you never know how it will work in the edit. If your footage is included I will give you a credit at the end of the movie. If you want to send footage that includes recognizable individual people and you were registered for a personal/professional use camera permit you will need to have model releases or have the ability to get them. If you feel so inspired, feel free to shoot present day “Interviews” of yourself and friends who have gone to the festival reflecting on the experience of going to Burning Man and include that.

I am doing this totally out of pocket and I expect it will be a huge project so I have created a project on Kickstarter to offset the cost of production and editing equipment, ftp, LOTS of drives, etc. Please join in and be part of the process and help support the film on Kickstarter 🙂 Here’s the link. http://kck.st/hpmsds

If you would like to send footage, contact me at communitycamerabm (at) gmail (dot) com and I will get to work on including your footage in this great documentary. Editing starts Monday!

Thanks and see you on the Playa!

JUNKRAFT: GUIDING US TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Now and again, we highlight a project coming to Burning Man that particularly trips our trigger. This is one of them … Sara writes:

“The JUNKraft art installation is being created by a nonprofit called the 5 Gyres Institute that studies the presence of plastic pollution in the ocean, and coordinates education and advocacy efforts to engage people in solutions.

This year we are bringing our original plastic raft – JUNKraft – to the Playa…

SUMMARY:
“There is no room for waste, as a concept or a place.” There has always been new land and neighbors to conquer, and endless sea and sky to absorb our pollution. All of this is changing in our lifetimes. We desperately need new stories to guide us towards a sustainable future. Art, music, film, and personal narratives can show us the way.

The JUNKraft shows us that story. And Ben Lear’s Rock Opera Lillian provides the soundtrack.

We plan to bring these stories to new audiences around the world, engaging tens of thousands of people in understanding the problem of plastic pollution, and getting involved in solutions, by bringing the JUNKraft to the Playa at Burning Man. Atop JUNKraft, singer/songwriter Ben Lear will perform his rock opera Lillian, sharing the story of plastic marine pollution through a haunting, lyrical narrative featuring a young man’s discovery of loss and love amidst the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”.

Here, we will shoot a short film for viral distribution, capturing people’s reaction to the problem, their reflections on how to effect meaningful change, and our broader perspective on fostering a new ethic in the 21st century – that this concept of waste today is simply immoral.

Here’s their Kickstarter page: http://kck.st/lmuDsn

THE SERPENT TWINS HONORARIUM ART PROJECT

Here’s an honorarium art project that could use your financial and/or volunteer help. Kyrsten writes:

“The Serpent Twins are evolving into 2 giant fire breathing, light-show playing, kinetic deco Nordic beasts. We have a Kickstarter up with about 2 weeks to go and as of now a little over 40% funded. All of the Kickstarter monies will go to our greatly expanded LED lighting scheme, its power supply and distribution, controllers, propane, and transportation to the playa. 6,000 LEDs, 6 controllers, 20 power transformers, hundreds of pounds of propane — it really adds up! This is all on top of the enormous amount of steel, acrylic, tires, and the myriad of other things that make up these two 50 foot mobile metal sculptures. Check out our Kickstarter at:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/857892998/the-serpent-twins-mobile-sculptures-for-burning-ma.

And look in on our progress on our blog at http://www.formandreform.com/wordpress/?cat=672. Because We Can also has beautiful renders and talk about their role in the project at http://www.becausewecan.org/TheSerpentTwins?amp&.

If you have time and skills, we would love help! We are looking for people to do all sorts of things such as metal fabrication tasks, painting, and electronics. If you are looking to creatively make your mark, we are also looking for graphic design and LED lighting people who know flash to help design the lighting schemes that play across the Serpents. If you have few skills, but would like to contribute, I’m sure we can think of something as well. Contact Jon: jon (at) formandreform (dot) com or Kyrsten at zerzurax (at) yahoo (dot) com
