Well, it happened. For the first time in our 25-year history, tickets for Burning Man sold out. There’s always been a population cap in place, as per our BLM permit, but we’d never actually hit it before. And this year, we did.

We’ve been spending a lot of time this week keeping an eye on all the various social media outlets on which Burners are talking about it, asking questions, seeking tickets for sale, and sorting through the myriad rumors that inevitably run rampant when big news hits.

To get the correct information out there, we’ve compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions, and answered them. From “where can I get a ticket?” to “what can we do about scalpers?” to “what’s going to happen next year?”, we got ’em all covered below.

One of the biggest ones going around was the false (as in hoax, parody, satire, prank, good ol’ fashioned BS) rumor that this will be the last year for Burning Man. And? Nope, not true, don’t worry. We’ll be back.

We also have VERY IMPORTANT information about what happens if you show up at the Burning Man Gate without a ticket. Did you see where we said VERY IMPORTANT right there? Right. Read it. Make sure your friends and campmates do too.

Getting back to the wonders of Black Rock City, this edition of the JRS has more opportunities to participate than you can shake a (very big) stick at. Enjoy the fruits of your community!

The Man burns in 36 days … so hop to it, people!

BURNING MAN TICKETS HAVE SOLD OUT – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Now that tickets for Burning Man have sold out for the first time in our 25-year history, we’ve been getting a lot of questions from folks in the community … here are the most common ones, answered:

Q. How many tickets have been sold?
A. We don’t release ticket sales data, which is annually a different number from the population that actually comes to BRC. We’ve cut off ticket sales early in order to manage our population count over the course of the event, as stipulated by our BLM permit.

Q. So how many people will be at the event?
A. A lot of variables affect who actually shows up each year on which day. We project that if the event is any larger than last year’s peak, it won’t be by much, and it’s our responsibility to try to keep it in line with that to comply this year’s permit.

Q. Why/how did the event sell out?
A. Burning Man stopped ticket sales on the evening of Sunday, July 24th.

Q. Where can I buy (who can sell me) a ticket?
A. There’s always a healthy ticket aftermarket in action on the ePlaya (http://eplaya.burningman.com), Burning Man’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/burningman), Craigslist, eBay and (in some cases) Regional discussion lists (http://regionals.burningman.com), though demand is especially high since the sellout. We recommend eBay LAST because ticket prices there may get artificially-inflated, unless the buyer uses “Buy It Now” at face value of the ticket. Buyers should visit http://tickets.burningman.com/#buysell for information on confirming tickets before buying from third parties. Please do not buy tickets above face value.

Q. Is Burning Man going to be releasing more tickets for the event?
A. No. Really. That is not an option for this year’s BLM permit.

Q. I planned for everything, got a camp together, bought expensive plane tickets and an RV, but hadn’t gotten my ticket yet. Now I’m screwed. What can I do?
A. We do sympathize, but we’ve been warning people about the possibility of tickets selling out for months now, including the JRS, artist lists, theme camp lists, mutant vehicle lists, volunteer team lists, and more. We recommend a ticket be the first thing, not the last, on a planning list to come to the event. You can try and buy a ticket in the aftermarket (see above).

Q. What can be done about the scalpers?
A. Scalping is not regulated in Nevada where our event is held, so there is nothing we can do about it from a legal standpoint. We have had controls in place to help keep anyone from buying up large blocks of tickets throughout the cycle, and we’re not of the mind that scalpers are sitting on large piles of tickets.

We encourage our community to not buy/sell tickets above face value, which will only encourage the scalping market. Participants are encouraged to be patient, and look for the usual flood of Burners who decide as the event approaches that they can’t go, and sell their tickets.

Selling for a profit hits at our core principles; public sentiment in our community is very opposed to selling above face value, and we do think Burners should refuse to buy or sell a ticket that lines a third party’s pocket with unearned profit. We’re working on communications to the community that will further address this issue.

Q. Is Burning Man becoming an “exclusive” event?
A. We continue to offer a spread of ticket price tiers, as well as low income and scholarship ticket programs, which provide cheaper tickets for those who need them. For the past 7 months, tickets have been available to anyone who wishes to attend, and the only exclusivity present will be in favor of those who planned ahead.

Q. Now that tickets have sold out, what’s going to happen next year?
A. We’ll sit down to weigh all the variables. It’s logical and likely there will be more demand on ticket launch day, and perhaps a faster sell-out of all available tickets. We’re going to be discussing internally how to best handle this and plan for it. We have a lot of great advisors in our Regional Network who have faced sellout points for their events, and come up with lots of creative solutions.

Q. Can we increase Black Rock City’s population next year?
A. Certainly Burning Man has always grown from year to year, and interest can be expected to continue increasing. We are working in a cooperative partnership with the BLM on a new 5 year permit; through that process our population’s size and impact are being evaluated, hopefully so we can continue to grow as appropriate.

Q. Is this the last year for Burning Man? (Thanks to “The Shroom” for a quite believable hoax article that claimed so.)
A. Nope. Satire. Someone says this every year!

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU SHOW UP AT THE GATE WITH NO TICKET?

Since Burning Man tickets have sold out for the first time in our 25-year history, it’s more important than ever that our community knows and understands Burning Man’s Gate policy. Here’s what you need to know:

– There are no tickets for sale at the Gate. You will be turned away and not allowed entry if you show up without a ticket.

– If you are giving someone a ride to Burning Man, including ride shares and hitchhikers, please be sure they have a ticket or you may end up driving back to Reno to drop them off. Leaving them at the Gate or in Gerlach is not an option. Washoe County Sheriff will be watching out for people loitering in or around Gerlach.

– Harboring stowaways or assisting people sneaking in is as bad as sneaking in yourself. Any vehicle with stowaways or assisting people sneaking in will have the whole vehicle refused entry with no refund of tickets.

– Anyone caught trying to sneak in to the event or causing a disruption at the Gate or Box Office is subject to citation, fine, and arrest by the BLM.

Finally, we expect long lines coming into the event and going out during Exodus, so arriving or leaving at non-peak times — and exercising patience — is advised.

If you have further questions about the Gate and Exodus, see our FAQ: http://gate.burningman.com/faq-gate

LATEST NEWS ABOUT THE EMPIRE STORE

Coyote, Burning Man’s City Superintendent, writes to us from the DPW’s enclave in Gerlach:

“Greetings all from Gerlach –

As the first of the management and crew of Burning Man started trickling into Gerlach, word of mouth came around that the Empire Store was not only is alive and doing very well, but was also hosting weekly BBQs every Saturday afternoon with great food and live bands! Without a hiccup, we piled into our trucks and headed toward the giant mountain of white gypsum to the Empire Market. What a warm welcome we all got with front lawn and cold beer settings and a BBQ stand featuring pulled pork, BBQ beef sandwiches, chicken leg quarters, spare ribs, and sirloin steak – all served with traditional beans, potato salad, and slaw. And all this accompanied by a good timer band of good natured boys called ‘The Mustang Riders’, playing the good stuff!

It was truly a pleasant afternoon and a good chance to hang with the locals and support the local store. When asked how long through the summer this would carry on, the answer was, ‘As long as folks will have us!’

So this is a shout out to our staff and friends alike that are coming through the area to give the Empire Store some love and good cheer and make a few new friends at the local market shindig on a Saturday afternoon! The store has had to field some pretty hard curve balls the last few seasons and keeps landing on its feet. A little appreciation never hurt anyone!

Tony ‘Coyote’ Perez
City Superintendent
Black Rock City / DPW”

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT CHINESE SKY LANTERNS

In the last JRS, we included a post about a project that will be using Chinese sky lanterns … those paper lanterns that you light a little candle inside and let them float up into the air … they’re really pretty as they drift away, glowing.

The problem is — and thanks to our Fire Art Safety Team (FAST) for alerting us — that they’re also SUPER dangerous, especially in Black Rock City.

Beyond the MOOP factor, they can float off into the city and light a tent on fire … and they can float off into the surrounding mountain ranges and start a wildfire. In fact, with the prevailing winds as they are, this is highly likely.

So, DO NOT USE CHINESE FIRE LANTERNS IN BLACK ROCK CITY. AT ALL. EVER.

NO.

SHOUTING FIRE NEEDS YOU TO SUPPORT YEAR-ROUND PLAYA RADIO (BY AUGUST 6!)

Yes, we know you’re all busy prepping for the playa–and may be feeling a little gifted out. But Shouting Fire needs your gift to ensure we can keep gifting you with scintillating sonics online and year-round.

What does Shouting Fire provide? Among other things: streaming resources for the annual Burning Man Information Radio webcast, live from Black Rock City; live coverage of events the other 51 weeks of the year, from precompressions and decompressions to Larry talks and playa-rific performances; and a slate of incoming original programming, such as Burning Blogger Caveat’s ineffable talk show Fascinating Strangers and a series of sermons from Reverend Billy and the Church of Earthalujah.

Combine all that and what do you have? Alternative universe radio the likes of which can’t be heard anywhere else–and a home for your community’s programming as well. All of which can be yours for pennies a day. But we do indeed need those pennies–or those Benjamins if you’ve got ’em.

Phase one of our fundraising campaign through www.startsomegood.com ends on August 6, and there are a boatload of bountiful premiums for your participation. Visit http://tinyurl.com/6xgfk8x to get involved with your bucks.

And hit up www.shoutingfire.com to learn more about the project and listen to Larry Harvey speak at the 2011 Burning Man Regional Summit’s Convectional Caucus.

Thank you for your support–and we look forward to bringing you more of the intentional noise you want to hear.

BUILDING A BURNING MAN THEME CAMP

This great item came to us via about a thousand vectors over the last week. Why? Because it’s just. that. good. Check it out:

John Mills has been integral in running the Duck Pond – one of the larger and more well-organized Burning Man theme camps – since 2005. Those who have been to Burning Man probably know this camp as the one with the giant slip ‘n’ slide and the radio tower with a yellow duck on top. This year John is unable to attend, so he’s focused his energy into helping the community by writing an extremely detailed account of how their camp works and how to run your own.

PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR AMERICAN TRIBAL STYLE IMPROV BELLY DANCE PROCESSION

Christy writes:

“Camp Gypsies, Tramps, & Thieves have organized a parade of American Tribal Style (ATS) improvisational belly dance across the playa on Friday, and we’re seeking ATS dancers of all skill levels, musicians/drummers, art cars, children, and an enthusiastic retinue to join us. We will be leaving Camp GT&T around 6:30 PM on Friday, with planned stops at the Hookah Lounge (4:30 & A), Art of Such’n’Such (5:00 & Esplanade), Persian Excursion (Rod’s Road), and the Spenard Bar (9:15 & G). We’ll end our journey, as all good journeys are wont to end, with a trek to the Man and the Temple.

Are you planning to wedge a 25-yard skirt into a compressor bag? Got some moves and a hip scarf to back it up? Know which end of a dumbek needs banging? We need to talk. Contact Christy Anandaconda at dreamydefinitive at gmail for more information.

Likewise, if you have always wanted to learn this beautiful dance, the six belly dancers of GT&T will be offering a basic lesson at 5 PM on Friday before the parade starts. Check with Playa Info for the camp address of Gypsies, Tramps, & Thieves; we’re gifting belly dance, aerial lyra, tarot, yoga, henna, harquus, face painting, and bandana-making throughout the week. Look for the 20′ tall fiberglass aerial pyramid with raggle-taggle gypsy bedsheet shade walls rising out of a nest of shiny yurts and hobo prayer flags.”

SILENT DANCE PARTY IN HUSHVILLE?

Blue writes:

“A few participants had a vision recently of a silent dance party in the middle of (or on the edge of) Hushville. A silent dance party uses music that is broadcast via a transmitter and the signal is picked up by wireless headphone receivers provided by the hosts. I purchased the equipment to make silent events happen, procuring the transmitters and over 100 sets of headphones. We are missing some key pieces if this is to be a reality (anything you can help with?):

A) People with dome “dust-proofing” experience or expertise (don’t laugh — although I personally have never been successful at dust-proofing ANYTHING at BRC, others have: think Xara circa 2001) and dome dust-proofing material;

B) Appropriate individual coverings to protect the silent headphones from dust but at the same time allowing for comfortable wearing of headphones (this may not be needed if we are able to obtain an appropriately dust-free dome);

C) Soundless (and without need of generator) power supply for at least the transmitters (12V) and possibly one or more DJ set-ups (CDjs, Mixers, etc);

D) A battery solution for headphones (headphones use two (2) AAA batteries and all tests up until now have used non-rechargeable batteries — any ideas to make us more environmentally friendly?);

E) Volunteers to help staff the headphone distribution and collection during silent dance parties.

Should this be a go? If so, how can you help with the Hushville Silent Dance Party?

Love,

Blue

INTERGALACTIC HAIRDRESSERS NEEDED

Bonnie writes:

“Barber Ella Shop is a sexy, campy playa hairdresser inspired by 60s sexploitation classic “Barbarella”. We will be cutting hair from our intergalactic barbershop in the 9:00 plaza from 1-4pm Tuesday through Friday while screening Barbarella and serving space-age libations.

We are a small camp, and will have extra chairs open every day. So, if you’re a professional stylist (we’re not!) or just an enthusiastic amateur, come on down and help us make the playa a little more fabulous, one head at a time. We have all the tools necessary, but feel free to bring your own as well.

See: http://barberellashop.wordpress.com/ for more info!”
