{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** So, we were traipsing around the internet the other day, as you do, and we saw that the folks over at Burncast dug out and served up this oldie but goodie video, and it got us all wispy and verklemptified and whatnot. Thought you might enjoy it, as the days start to shorten, and the weather grows colder. So here it is … Matt Goodman’s incredible 5-week timelapse of Black Rock City 2011:

http://bit.ly/ZwC7zH

Kinda mind-blowing, ain’t it? OK, onward! This edition of the JRS brings with it plenty of opportunities to PARTICIPATE, including writing Django (if that doesn’t make sense to you, don’t worry), sharing your playa story with the world, helping reunite sad sad Burners with their lost cameras, making your mark on the Black Rock City census, attending a Decompression event in HAWAII, and participating in a gifting workshop … how’s that for variety, right?

Dig in, and we hope that you have plenty to be grateful for when you’re sitting around the Thanksgiving table next week. We know we do … after all, we get to hang out with YOU folks (awwww!). Seriously though, you guys are rad.

The Man burns in 288 days!

PARTICIPATE IN THE BLACK ROCK CITY CENSUS (DECOMPRESSION EDITION)!

Did you fill out the Census while you were at Burning Man? More than 10,000 people did this year (that’s more than one out of every five attendees!). If you’re one of these lucky Burners, you can access the final part of the Burning Man Census at http://census.burningman.com.

We’re calling it the Decompression section, and for the first time in Census history, you will be able to tell us about your Burning Man experience!

For this project to work, we need your help. Please: 1) Fill out the Decompression survey at http://census.burningman.com
2) Tell your fellow Burners about the project and send them the address.

Heads up: to fill out the Decompression section of the Census, you must be one of those who completed the Census at Burning Man (the long paper form with a pink access card in the back).

THE CENSUS CLOSES THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER!

The Census began in 2002, and has grown into a living collaboration between nerdy Burner scientists, Burning Man Headquarters (BMHQ), and Black Rock Citizens. Since its inception, Census data has been used by BMHQ and social scientists to demonstrate that the people of Black Rock City are upstanding global citizens. We post summaries of each Burn’s Census data online in the AfterBurn section of the burningman.com site.

Confidentiality has always been strictly maintained. The Decompression section of the census was written by our Burning Nerd collaborators and their questions were designed to answer their particular research questions. Your participation will help them to write more and better articles about people who go to Burning Man and their experiences. Going forward, we hope the Census data will become more interactive, allowing Black Rock Citizens an opportunity to explore the data sets while maintaining the confidentiality of the respondents. We are just beginning to envision how this might work. If you have ideas, please share them! If you’d like to be part of the team, please join us! We always need more nerds. Email us: census@burningman.com.”

TALES FROM THE PLAYA – RESURRECTED!

Back in the day, the Tales From the Playa section of the Burning Man website played host to years’ worth of participant’s first-hand playa stories. It made for a veritable trove of wonderful nuggets, slices, crumbs and niggly bits of Burning Man culture. Well, it went dormant for a few years there, but we’re happy to say that IT’S BEEN REVIVED!

We’ve migrated all the stories onto the Burning Blog (post-dating them to their original submission dates), and have caught up on posting our backlog of stories that you fine (and very patient) folks have been submitting. We’re VERY excited about this, as this is an important part of Burning Man’s historical archive. And with that, we give you Tales From the Playa:

http://blog.burningman.com/category/tales-from-the-playa/

YOU are welcome to submit your playa story (and photos, if you wish) for consideration to reflections (at) burningman (dot) com. We encourage well-written submissions relating to your participation at the event. Please sample the diverse Tales already posted. We are interested in your unique experiences, episodes, or reflections. It is not necessary to provide general descriptions or advice about the event. We may select and edit any submission. (We do not post everything and will not post descriptions of illegal acts or false or inaccurate information.) Making your submission as grammatically and stylistically precise as possible will enhance the likelihood that your exact expression will be posted as you intended. We look forward to reading your submissions, so get writing!

IF IT’S NOT FROM YOUR BODY, DON’T PUT IT IN THE POTTY … BUT WHY?

Why do we say, ‘If it’s not from your body, don’t put it in the potty’? And how come we’re so…ahem…anal… about the toilet paper used?

Do you know how the porta-potty suckers process our waste? They essentially spray it through a big screen (gross, we know. AND necessary). Anything more than single-ply TP gets stuck on the screen, and then, someone who works tirelessly doing this in 100-degree heat all day, a *REAL HUMAN*, has to pick out the thing that’s stopping the flow through the screen, *BY HAND*. Imagine for a moment, that that is YOU.

Now do you want to carry a ziplock bag with you to carry your trash back to camp? We thought you might. Have mercy on the troops of soldiers doing the work you don’t want to think about doing. Oh, and if they decide they don’t want to work with us anymore, guess what? Big problem for Burning Man. 🙁

Remember … if it goes through your body, it can go in the potty. Want your watermelon rind in there? Eat it first. Same goes for tampons.
