ONE PARTICIPANT’S TAKE ON THE 2013 THEME

“When Larry Harvey, founder of Burning Man, announced the theme for the 2013 festival, I scratched my head and turned to Google. ‘Who is John Frum, and what is a Cargo Cult?’ I wondered.

After doing my homework and pondering for a while, I decided that, because it made me think, this year’s theme is brilliant. But what is its meaning, and how does it spark creativity and growth?”

MOOP — MATTER OUT OF PLACE

Did you know that when each of us buys our ticket to Burning Man, we agree to pick up MOOP (Matter Out Of Place)? It’s true, read the back of your ticket!

MOOP is anything that wasn’t in the desert when we got there. Anything. This means wood chips, sawdust, pistachio shells, cigarette butts, random sparkly strings, rogue cans or bottles (tsk, tsk), or anything else that isn’t dust, really.

Burning Man citizens in the know always carry a ziplock bag to collect MOOP as they roam. They practice the art of “never let it hit the ground”, pick up MOOP wherever it’s found (theirs, yours, or anyone’s), and do at least two hours of playa cleanup outside of their own camps.

Here’s a great set of guidelines from our beloved DA, head of Playa Restoration, on how to do a MOOP sweep: http://bit.ly/T70hje

Not only is MOOPing the right thing to do for the environment, our annual permit with the BLM is contingent on how little trace we leave behind … if we trash the playa, we don’t get to have Burning Man there. Yes, really. So pick up your trash and pack it out securely!
