Cheap gas and the lively ghost of the Silver Boom.
If you are going to Black Rock City from Southern California, chances are you are riding through on Hwy 50 or US 395 / I-580. Welcome back to civilization!
Near the junction of Highway 50 and US-395 / I-580, you will find Trader Joe’s, Costco, Home Depot, Aloha Beer Wine & Spirits, WalMart and an odd assortment of sit-down and fast-food restaurants.
Further north, with US-395 / I-580 becoming Carson Street, at Clearview Drive is Save Mart on your left that is a regional favorite and, past the dealerships, on your right is Lowe’s Home Improvement, a very good place to get hardware and building materials.
If you want to bypass most of Carson and head straight to Reno and the playa, turn onto Fairview to reach US-395 / I-580. You will find the LED Store just on your right here on Fairview.
However, if you want to continue to shop or leisure through Carson City, continue straight onwards into downtown.
Further along, you will find another favorite supermarket, Raleys. Further, across from the Nevada State Legislature, Comma Coffee on the left makes a great cup and the decor may help inspire your theme camp. Wireless Internet is available.
The City Center Hotel allows RV/oversized parking in Lot #4 and the Nugget offers up a dirt-cheap 24hr coffee shop.
Further ahead, toward the end of Carson City, on your left will be another Save Mart Supermarket and then the US-395 bypass. Also nearby, down Old Hot Springs Road right off of US-395, Carson Hot Springs is close by. On your way to Carson Hot Springs you may also want to stop in at “Classy Seconds Thrift”. It’s a hidden gem in the thrift store world. Prices are extremely cheap and the staff is wonderful!
But wait! There’s one more major important place to note: Carson-Tahoe Medical Center. Turn left at Arrowhead Drive for any EMERGENCY MEDICAL care needs.
