Greeters

2008 was yet another successful year for Greeters. A few new challenges, lots of new Greeters, wonderful returning Greeters … all in all a terrific year!

50,000+ Greeter handout packets were produced this year, requiring a huge effort to collate them all, but the Greeter Collation team did an awesome job, completing this task quickly and efficiently. They should be proud of their accomplishment.

The construction and dismantling of the Greeters Station went smoothly. Even though there is not an official construction manager in place, a terrific team has rather formed organically, and ensures that the station is properly built, looks great, and is torn down in a timely manner.

As usual, many participants simply showed up to help collate, set up, tear down and greet. These random volunteers are amazing and really help to fill out the Greeter schedule.

The Greeter computer guru once again ensured that the schedule was well-managed and easy for volunteers to use. The schedule was upgraded so that participants were better able to manage their own schedule, and we had a good balance between Greeters from theme camps and other Greeters.

Opening night was spectacular! There was an abundance of Greeters, mutant vehicles, fire displays, a fabulous DJ and fire spinners all on hand to welcome the participants home.

Communication between teams continues to improve, and we worked well with the Placement team in 2008.

Greeter Council is a very solid team. Members work well together, know what needs to be done with little direction, and have fun at the same time.

A spectacular place, Greeters Camp, was enjoyed by all. Thanks to those who made Greeters Camp home to many.

Did we reach our 2008 goals? Simply put… Yes.

This year, there were three more Beacons added to the station, bringing the total to 15. This opened up three more slots to help get participants in quickly.

And a new power system was added, making a huge difference in lighting up the area at night.

Of course, there were a few dramas this year, and these situations were handled smoothly and effectively by all. It was a good learning experience for everyone involved.

As always, Greeters continue to ROCK at Burning Man. Everyone should be proud of all their hard work.
