Ahhh – Decompression weekend! After the sweet lil’ fambly reunion that was the Burning Man Film Festival in Santa Cruz last Saturday, this rabbit is left itching for even more connection with the citizens, sights and sounds of BRCSjust in time, here comes Decompression! One might think that this would be a quiet-ish time around the Burning Man office, but what with all our normal post-event wrap-up, and the amazing volunteer energy that goes into putting on the SF Decom, one would be mistaken. We’re still soaking in it, and we look forward to the arrival of many of our far-flung friends who will join us on the blacktop in San Francisco this Sunday.

Looking for some playafication to kick off your Decom weekend? How about a screening of “Dust Devils”, a lovely Irish documentary by Aprile Blake and Dearblha Glynn? It screened this weekend at the Film Fest, but if you missed it, here’s another chance. That’s this Thursday night at in San Francisco. Details can be found in “Events and Happenings”.

One more thing: we still love to receive the pink Census forms to the PO Box (Burning Man, PO Box 884688, San Francisco, CA 94188-4688), but for those of you who like to go the electronic route, here’s the URL: burningman.com/surveys. Thanks for participating.

Oh – one more “one more thing” – 331 days until we burn it again!

REV BILLY – BIG IN EUROPE

An article on Reverend Billy, who performed with his Stop Shopping Choir at the base of the Man this year, appeared recently in The Ecologist, a British magazine.

My favorite sentence: “All this explains quite adequately why Starbucks hates and fears the Reverend – so much so that they distributed a memo to all their New York employees entitled ‘What should I do if Reverend Billy is in my store?'”

BURNING CULTURAL ANALYSIS

The Network Girl writes: I am in an Anthropology class and I was supposed to pick a culture to write a paper on so, of course I picked my favorite one-Burning Man. I have created some questions to get the ball rolling and have submitted them to various groups and I have had a few people suggest to send to Jack Rabbit Speaks for a broader group. So, if you have the time to answer 10 or so questions about the Burning Man culture over email, please let me know at thenetworkgirl!

GOT LOVE ON TAPE?

Karen writes: On Sunday after the burn I was sitting in the Temple of Honor playing the piano and singing the “I LOVE YOU” song I wrote for my man and he was sitting next to me crying his eyes out in total love and honor for the space we were sitting in and the place in his heart he connected with. It became quite a scene, people gathered all around, guitar players joined in, everyone was singing along, harmony, lasted a really long time, so beautiful… There were a few people who started filming and I’m wondering how I can find that video. I know it’s a long shot but I would love to have a recording of those precious moments we had in the Temple before it burned.

SNOHOMISH K BROWN WRITES ON BIRDS OF PARADISE

Does anyone have pictures of the Birds of Paradise?

“The Birds of Paradise are a flock of traveling firebirds. The fire of the wings symbolizes the burning of fuel to travel from place to place. The firebirds are a still-living ancient mythical presence. They are really living when they burn. They display their shining bodies with the light of their own fiery plumage. Since birds live in the sky the connections between the sun and birds are many throughout mythology. As firebirds they are also sunbirds. The props are as is: Each fire bird uses a pair of stilts. The costume consists of a long black dress which blacks out the legs and stilts of the performer effectively creating a visible flying upper body. A long triangular panel of shiny metallic fabric descends from the shoulders to a narrow point below the waist. The fire wings have been redesigned by Rusty Oliver www.hazardfactory.org with an all metal construction using cast aluminum hand grip and a larger metal fan blade as well as longer fire pinions. The birds performed throughout the week and for the first main lighting of the Great Circle at the burning of the Man. (Concept Design and Text written by Justin Rodda)”

Please contact birdsOparadise if you have any pictures of these marvelous performers! Thank you!! – Snohomish K Brown.

REV. BILLY’S BUY NOTHING DAY IN NEW YORK – NOV 28TH

Repent, Ye Sinners.and Buy Nothing!
In celebration of our decision to Buy Nothing, The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir will sing in front of New York’s Plaza Hotel at 7 pm on Friday, November 28. Reverend Billy will follow with his yearly “State-of-the-Dollar-Buy-Nothing-Everyday” sermon, and we will hear testimony from The People. Together, we will challenge the absurd international economy –a system that profits so few and controls so many. The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir will remind us how joyous freedom from Consumerism truly is. BUY NOTHING DAY is A REALLY GOOD TIME.

More information about the night’s events can be found at revbilly.com.

(Editor’s Note: Buy Nothing Day is an anti-consumerism concept that’s been around for years. It always lands on the Friday after Thanksgiving. For more info, check out adbusters.org) .
