So, with last week’s Resources issue under our belts, we’re ready to head back into the regular news…and it’s a full week, lemmetellyawhut. There are events coming up all over the place – in fact, a few of our own, such as a sneak peek at the art we’ll see at Burning Man ’05, at the upcoming “Desert Art Preview” event at the Crucible in Oakland (July 13th). This event is part of the Crucible’s mind-bending Fire Arts Festival (mind you, the art we’ll see previewed does extend beyond the flaming and exploding!) The full schedule is below.
We’re also presenting NO SPECTATORS DAY and a Community Art Carnival (in conjunction with the Black Rock Art Foundation – http://www.blackrockarts.org) on July 31st here in San Francisco. You’re invited….and if you can’t make it here, you’re invited to celebrate it in your own town in your own way.
But what about the news for preparing to PLAYA? (Yes, that word’s been officially verbed. Trust me.) Registration deadline for the Department of Mutant Vehicles is fast approaching (July 15th) and if you’re planning a piece of driveable art, OR you’re going to need to register with your disabled placard to move a vehicle around BRC, get on over to that form. (See “BRC NEWS”.) AND we’ve got the first of six JRS installments which will focus on the grant projects for Burning Man 2005 – read up below and start wrapping your brain around these amazing works!
So let’s go, but before we do: for those that may have skipped or missed the Resource Issue, we repeat one big piece of news around here – the extended DVD of “Beyond Black Rock” is now available at Burningman.com! This long-awaited version double-sided DVD of the documentary includes the 106 minute main feature and another 2 hours of additional material, including extended interviews, outtakes and deleted scenes, all of which provide a large body of detail and information. Producer Mike Wilson helpfully pointed out to us this week that the film is not only a great way to help your puzzled family understand why you keep dragging yourself to that danged desert thing every year, but that it might be a good motivator for getting your camp excited about high-season planning, or for that on-the-fence friend you’ve been trying to drag along with you for years. We’ll let you be the judge of that. You’ve got your chance if you’re going to be in Portland or Seattle in early August, where Mutaytor and other great acts will add to the fun at special screenings of the film. SPOTLIGHT ON THE 2005 GRANT PROJECTS
This is the first in a series of six articles focusing on our funded installations. You can view all 31 projects at http://www.burningman.com/installations/05_art_grant.html.
THE FIRE DREAM CIRCLE
This year, halfway between the Man and the Temple of Dreams, an enormous head will rise from the playa. It is Pepe Ozan’s Dreamer, a huge partially submerged head containing an interactive interior brain space and a playa mud chimney. Each evening, the fireplace will be ceremonially lit by the lamplighters. Participants are invited to experience/practice/ live a “dream state” inside the head for a number of hours. Anyone can join. Musicians will be playing “dream” music almost every night. The Head will stare out to the deep playa, and will be surrounded by a grouping of fire installations. Each night during the event this Fire Dream Circle will flame on for several hours and will be visible from far across the playa.
Heading along the walkway from the man to the Temple, one will pass through Joe Bard and Danya Parkinson’s Pyrokinetics, two large-scale fire pendulums that will face each other across the central walkway, forming a kind of gateway. “You see flames swaying to and fro, back and forth, popping, roaring, calling to you. There are two of them, one swinging down low, and one high overhead; so beautiful, so bright. Your eyelids feel heavy as you become mesmerized by their movement. You relax more with every rotation; with every breath you go deeper, deeper…”
Within the Circle, several fire projects will surround the Dreamer, including:
The Angel of the Apocalypse by the Flaming Lotus Girls
The Angel will come alive with fire at dusk each night. We will start the wood fire inside the Angel’s head at sunset, and as the sky darkens a lighting ceremony will start the outer wings burning, creating an edge of flame around the installation. As people come into the space, we will introduce the fire and interactive controls in the inner wings, inviting participants to play, dance, and explore the Angel of the Apocalypse. Towards early morning each night we will close down the wing fires and stoke the wood fire in the Angel’s head, leaving the space open, warm, and resting for the remainder of the night and morning.
The Fire Pod by Buphalo
Fire-Pod will be operating Tuesday through Saturday, working with fire performance groups or individuals to use the pod as a stage. The pod will make lots of big fire from the time it gets dark, till we run out of gas (estimating 1 hour to an hour and a half). There will be some interface that allows people passing by to control the bursts.
The Synapses by Charlie Smith and Jaime Laudet
The six synaptic fire cauldrons will burn four times during the week of Burning Man: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. These burns will provide a very warm and visually stimulating atmosphere hosting a collective of participants and performers of fire, dance, music, antics, who knows what ? This will be an open, safe area for all to share and commune in the basking warmth of red hot metal. All of the visual designs glowing from the caldrons were created by the 72+ workshop participants that have come together to build this new series of fire cauldrons. The space will be filled with tons of great energy representing communities from New York City, Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco. All of these communities have done a fantastic job working together to create and build these six magnificent steel fire sculptures. Everyone is invited to come on out and toss a log into the mouth of a fire belching cauldron of synaptic energy!
Ajna by Kasia Wojnarski
Kasia’s creative vision is to create, with the use of fire and metal, a third eye playground. Employing the three main shapes that create the symbol for AJNA – the pineal gland, third eye, or sixth chakra – the installation will provide a place where citizens of Black Rock City can mingle, dance, and meditate within a large scale model of the Seat of the Soul, safely surrounded by fire and sacred geometry.
In addition, David Best’s Tower of Memory will move through the Fire Circle each night. This mobile 25′ hollow steel obelisk contains three fire pits; the flames will be visible through the filigreed metal.

Since 1998, by declaration from then-Mayor Willie Brown, July 31st commemorates NO SPECTATORS DAY in San Francisco. To celebrate, we’ll have two events that converge:
– the 2nd Annual Burning Man pARTiciPARADE! Last year was a BLAST! Be ready to bring your mobile art, acoustic instruments, drums, kazoos, signs, and costume creations to the gathering point at 1PM on Sunday, July 31st. We’ll march to our own drummers at 2PM sharp, make several stops here and there along Lower Haight Street and finish up by joining the festivities at Hayes Green. The Black Rock Arts Foundation is thrilled to host the first annual Community Art Carnival at the Hayes Green. This festive and family-friendly event will feature puppet making, puppetry by Monkey Thump puppet troupe, musical performances by soprano Marisa Lenhardt, accordionist Linda Robertson, and One People Voice Balinese Gamelon Orchestra, origami and paper flower making, interactive art installations and demonstrations. We will be holding the first-ever M.O.O.P. Olympics, where kids of all ages can participate in a ‘Leave No Trace’ training and then begin foraging for Matter Out of Place (M.O.O.P.). (Prizes will be awarded for the most trash collected, the largest piece of trash, the strangest, the most colorful and more.) The Black Rock Roller disco will provide roller skates and skating music at 2:00 PM, and the costume-clad Burning Man mobile art “pARTiciPARADE!” will join the festivities around 2:30PM. Bring a picnic and join strolling clowns, musical performers and friendly people for a fun day in celebration of community-based art!

DMV HOTTIES ANNOUNCEMENT – JULY 15th DEADLINE coming up!
This is a reminder that NOW is the time to register your Mutant Vehicles, or for your disabled license, if you plan to have either at Burning Man 2005.
As we all know, the preferred modes of transportation in Black Rock City are walking and biking. It’s the best way to navigate Burning Man’s busy streets and to best interact with people and the city everywhere you go. Mutant Vehicles
If you are one of those ambitious freaks with way too much time on your hands and you are planning on creating a Mutant Vehicle to share with your fellow burners, this is a reminder that all Mutant Vehicles must be preregistered in order to operate at Burning Man. The deadline is July 15th which is coming up fast, and the sooner you register the better chance you will have of us getting back to you ASAP, and the better chance of having to time to work out any potential issues. Disabled License to Drive
If you have a disabled placard in the default world and wish to use it on a vehicle at Burning Man, you must also preregister this with us. NON BOA BOAS
We all know you cannot bring feathers of any kind to the playa, right? Feather boas, while a staple of glamourous lads and ladies everywhere, cannot be kept from shedding their feathers and MOOPing all over the playa. Not worth it! We’ve suggested maribou in the past, but Angelpunkin here has compiled some crafty ways to boa-fy without the feathers! She writes:
“Just a thought to share on non boa boas. Some simple suggestions:
1. There is a fabric that comes in different colors that has little pieces of mylar fluffyness woven into it (they don’t shed) it is soft and light. Get a Yard/metre, cut it in half, fold one half in half (with the fluffy on the inside) sew it up, leeave three inches, so you can flip it rightside out. Flip it and stich up the last three inches. Voila. Repeat…and make one for someone else.
2.Go to a yarn store and look for something with a lot of fluff in a color you like. Using the biggest needles available (if they don’t have any, just go to the hardware store and get a dowel and a piece of sandpaper), knit yerself up a “scarf”. The large size needles will ensure lightness. Also if you knit the entire length as a row, instead of the traditional method, the loops will be in a different direction, so it will be lighter.
3. Get a bunch of fine copper wire, and a piece of sturdy ribbon. Make standard length loops of the wire (S shapes) and then sew the wire to the ribbon. snip the wire if you don’t mind pokyness. Fluff it like you would a bride before a picture.
4.Polarfleece (the easy fabric). Get some polar fleece. Sew/cut it into the shape you want (again, tube like or just a flat piuece. Snip it with the scissors and you will have fluffy boa like thing that is warm.”

BLACK ROCK FROM SPACE
Jeff writes: “On a sightseeing break during BM’03, I picked up an unusual 152 gram rock a few miles north of BRC. It has been under study at a university and has now been classified as an L Chondrite. It will be published in next year’s Meteoritical Bulletin as ‘Black Rock 001’, the first meteorite to be recovered from the Black Rock Desert. Chondrites come from the asteroid belt, and are time capsules that preserve features that date from the birth of the solar system, 4.56 billion years ago. The ‘L’ stands for low metal content.”

Art and Artists are Appreciated at Airport
The Black Rock City Airport is actively seeking more art installations, performance artists, and theme camps. Sorry, no pyrotechnics, and special arrangements must be made for any art you want to burn at the end of the event. This a real airport with a hundred real airplanes, located about two thousand feet from the edge of Black Rock City, next to the perimeter trash fence.
All types of art are welcomed, but some themes are particularly appropriate for our Port of Entry; aviation, avian, nautical, Homeland Security, world travel, space travel, transportation, baggage, rural/suburban living, and the sky is the limit. There is plenty of open real estate for art installations along Aviation Boulevard, which runs down one side of walk-in camping, as well as space in the Port of Entry Village which functions as a miniature Center Camp for pilots, passengers, and Airport Visitors.
We have a special need to decorate the Airport Gate, which is our portal to and from Black Rock City. Funding and transportation assistance may be available. If you’ve always wanted to create or build something, but weren’t sure what to do or where to start, we have many ideas collected over the years to stimulate your creative thinking. If you are a performance artist and think the Port of Entry is a good canvas for your efforts, come on out. If you are a Mutant Vehicle Pilot, make the Airport one of your regular daytime stops on your peregrinations about the playa (follow the 5:00 radial street AWAY from the man).

Last year at Burningman I was amazed at how many gifts (aka trinkets) I recieved that had such high MOOP potential. I think it’s a good time to remind everyone that if your gift can’t be strung, pinned, wired, attached or stuck in some way, it has a very high MOOP factor. It’s more likely that someone will be picking your gift up from the playa during the course of the event instead of enjoying it as you intended. Just as we must consider the MOOP factor for our camps and costumes, we need to consider it for our gifts as well.

The Newbie Picnic was created in response to something I was hearing from numerous new burners, and that was that they weren’t yet comfortable attending any of the local events because they didn’t know anyone. Since getting out and talking to other folks is the absolute best way for newbies to learn about attending Burning Man, we created the Newbie Picnic: a low-key day of fun in the sun centered on eating food, showing off playa gadgetry and exchanging information. But it’s not just for newbies — we need all the seasoned and grumpy playa vets to turn out in full force to impart their words of wisdom.
This year we’re adding something new… a Swap Meet! This will be a great opportunity for people with surplus gear to get it into the hands of those who are missing an item or two.

Transformus 2005 – The Southeast Regional Burn – Fire on the Mountain
July 22 through 24 at Deerfields, NC (just south of Asheville)
The second annual Transformus, held just south of Asheville, NC, at Deerfields, (http://www.deerfields.com) Transformus participants create the community of Mysteria, a temporary autonomous zone for radical self-expression. This will be our second year at Deerfields, a 900-acre slice of heaven adjacent to Pisgah National Forest that includes open fields, apple orchards, two pristine lakes, and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails in western North Carolina.
Transformus offers a Saturday night burn of “The Bamboozler”, a 32-foot effigy made entirely of bamboo. Veteran burners promise interactive fire art creations, as well as other fire performers and artists from across the nation.
Last year at the premier Transformus festival, more than 400 creative souls came together to bring an intimate taste of the playa to the green canvas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Artists, performers and theme camps of all sorts and stripes shared their gifts with Mysteria.
This year organizers, or Transformuses, are preparing to double that number.
