Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 12, Issue #5: Decompressions!
October 18, 2007

Howdy all! The rabbits have been receiving many a plaintive query from forlorn participants adjusting to the jarring reality of their post-playa day-to-day lives. They, like us, are jonesing for playa dust and the community it permeates. We know how it is, and well, we have two solutions for you …

One: don’t let it stop at the edge of Black Rock City. Tap into your local regional group (http://regionals.burningman.com), or dig into Burners Without Borders (www.burnerswithoutborders.org) and get inspired to take a piece of BRC back to your hometown, in small ways or large. Just because you’re home, it doesn’t mean you’re not a participant anymore, folks.

Two: find the nearest Decompression event, and get there! To that end, we provide this special JRS edition, giving you the lowdown on the killer Decompression events we know about. If you don’t see one near you, find your closest regional here: http://regionals.burningman.com and see what they’ve got going on.

Finally, a spattering of folks asked who the heck I (the newest rabbit in the hutch) am. OK, so fine. I’m Playaquest, aka PQ, aka Will Chase … I’ve been your Burning Man webmaster for 4 years, and author of many Burning Man related things you’ve likely read. Pleased to meet you … and happy to reach out and tap you on the shoulder with the occasional reminder of Black Rock City, and to flick a little playa dust yer way.

Onward and outward!

SAN DIEGO DECOMPRESSION: “FUEGO DE LOS MUERTOS” OCTOBER 19-21

Fuego de los Muertos, The Fire of the Dead, is the annual San Diego decompression: three days of art, music, fire performance and the celebration of life. It is our rite of transformation: a nexus connecting the end of the completed burn cycle with the start of the new one. We gather together to light the fires, to release the old, to renew ourselves. Through our passion, our art and our ingenuity, we evoke the savage and the sacred. At FDLM, we express ourselves in radically new ways and create our own meaning in this wild autumn celebration.

Situated in Anza Borrego, you’ll encounter a spectacular variety of creativity. Theme camps, art, music, performance and workshops will abound in this outdoor desert paradise. And this year brings a new tradition: The Secret Sculpture. Anchoring FDLM from beginning to end, this sculpture is set aflame on the final night… revealing a special transformation from within.

This is the harvest season, a time of burning away the old and creatingthe new. Come experience the transformation… and please participate! Help make this our best FDLM ever!

The fine print: No pets, no vending. Obey all fire safety and camp ground rules. No one under 21 without a guardian. This is not a rave. This is a Leave No Trace event–pack it in, pack it out.

NEW YORK CITY – NOVEMBER 3

The NYC Burning Man community presents…

CONCRETE JUNGLE
NYC Decompression 2007
on November 3rd, 2007 from 3pm – 4am
at the Queens Museum of Art
http://decom.brcnyc.com/

This is a landmark year for NYC Decompression. Decompression is teaming up with the Queens Museum of Art, a historic (site of the first UN General Assembly session), community-oriented, arts institution, to showcase the brightest creative flames of NYC, the East Coast and beyond.

We are all the creators of Decompression and together we will bring illumination and warmth to the November night, deep in the heart of the Concrete Jungle. Set in the bucolic environs of Flushing Meadows Corona Park in the inner reaches of the borough of Queens, we will create a lush and vibrant oasis of imagination.

Concrete Jungle needs every trailblazer and explorer to tread boldly with us into the wild. If you have an installation, performance, theme camp, band, activity, sculpture, painting, art car, photograph or imaginative menagerie of any sort, please bring it with you. It will take all of our creative resources to make it through the night. There is no room for spectators in the depths of the jungle.

Hardy pioneers of all sorts will be needed for this expedition. Every rugged ranger, gregarious greeter, DPW daredevil, gritty gatekeeper, determined doctor and vivacious volunteer are in demand! And everyone from the lowliest scout to the grandest shaman must Leave No Trace.

Tickets are on sale now! You must purchase tickets in advance to attend. There will be no ticket sales at the door. Tickets are expected to go fast, so get them at your earliest opportunity.

You can learn all about Decompression, contribute your art project and sign up as a volunteer at http://decom.brcnyc.com/. General inquiries should be sent to decom (at) brcnyc (dot) com.

Decompression is what we make of it.
