Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 12, Issue #13
March 21, 2008

Greetings everybody!  Wasn’t it nice to see AG making a surprise cameo in your inbox again? We certainly thought so.  Time now to settle back into your regularly scheduled Jack Rabbit Speaks Newsletter.  Speaking of “regularly scheduled”, starting like …  now …  we’re going to begin publishing the JRS on an as regular-as-possible a schedule, meaning bi-weekly, so get set for a regular blast in yer box.  Um.  That came out wrong.  So anyhoooo …

We’ve had a number of people making post requests recently, so we figured it would be smart to kick out a quick note about how that works.  So you wanna post? OK, send post requests to jackrabbitspeaks (at) burningman (dot) com (ONLY!) with the words “POST REQUEST” in the subject line.  If you have something time sensitive, give us plenty of lead time!  And keep in mind that this list has over 75,000 Burners around the world on it, so only send Burning Man-related posts that you really think might be of interest to that broad of an audience (e.g.  throwing a BBQ in your back yard would liiiikely not qualify).  Right? Cool.

Onward!

We kick off this edition with some important information from our gracious and charming (and we do mean that) Ticket Minions.  To wit, if you have a need for low income or scholarship tickets, now’s the time, and this is the place for your informationating, y’all …  right there in Latest News.  Also, our walk-in ticket outlets (like, not on the internet? wha??) are now selling tickets.  This is apparently where you actually leave your computer to do something.  So …  weird.  Finally, another reminder (because people will inevitably forget, get to the event, and freak the hell out) that there are NO TICKET SALES AT THE GATE this year.  Yes, for reals.  So get your ticket now.  Got that? Sweet.

Next up …  some information about how to get your loved one’s (or ones’? …  gosh, we hope not) name on the Burning Man Remembrance Plaque.  This is a touching tradition started back in 1996 wherein we place below the Man a beautiful plaque commemorating those who have passed away in the recent year.  More info below, including how to submit your name(s) for inclusion.

In definitively cheerier news, Burning Man’s Annual Open House event takes place Saturday, April 12th at BMHQ, starting at noon.  Come on down and join fellow Burners to learn how you can participate this year, and perhaps take another angle on the event …  volunteering will change not only your event experience, but your perspective on life as well, we guarantee it.

Bunch of cool events coming your way, including our New York Regional’s inaugural “Burner Lab”.  While this is a local event, we offer it to you as would-be inspiration for the type of event you might want to create in your own community (nudge nudge).  Also, the Friends of Black Rock / High Rock are hosting their spring kick-off party this weekend, gearing up for their Black Rock Rendezvous, coming Memorial Day Weekend.  Now, there’s a great opportunity to get your off-season playa on!  Finally, plan ahead to get out to Nowhere …  the official European Regional Event taking place in the wilds of Spain.  Why? Well, why wouldn’t you, really? It’s Europe, people!  If you need more convincing, you might read Bex’s report about last year’s Nowhere in our Regionals Blog: http://tinyurl.com/2c4hko

We finish up with a short photographic traipse down memory lane …  we’re using the excuse of our good friend Gabe Kirchheimer’s upcoming Burning Man photo show in Portland to share with you his incredible shots from Black Rock City, as seen in our image gallery …  you’ll find it down yonder in the Photos & Images section.  Beats sittin’ in a cube staring at the walls, don’t it? Yep.  This is us, loving you.

That’s all folks, see you next time!  Burn on.

-PQ (Associate Rabbit)

OUTLETS NOW SELLING TICKETS
Walk-in ticket outlet sales have begun!  Tickets through our outlets are $295 a piece and require that you have cash (exact change), or a money order.  Outlets cannot make change or accept credit cards.  Please be prepared when you go to buy your tickets.  Buying your ticket through one of our Walk-in ticket outlets is a great way to interact with our community, get your ticket in hand service-charge free, stock up on supplies to get ready for the playa, and support local burner-run businesses!  All of our outlets’ information and hours can be found on the ticket page, please do not burden the outlets with phone calls.  Tickets are available in our outlets through Friday, August 22, or until supplies run out.  If an outlet stops selling tickets it will be posted on the ticket page immediately.  That would be here: http://tinyurl.com/2ysq6g

NO GATE SALES
Remember, friends, tickets are not being sold at our event site box office this year!  Please help by reminding everyone you know that they need to be prepared and have their ticket in hand before they leave for the desert.

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, Burning Man has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away.  We would like to carry on this tradition and honor those who have impacted our Burning experiences and participated in making Burning Man happen.  This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any burners lost who you feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque.  Please send their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com (please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this JRS!!)

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August 25th) through Friday (August 29th).

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

BURNER LAB: A COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY ENDEAVOR

Greetings New York!  Your five Regionals — Cory, Oscar and Abby recently joined by Alex and Dave (aka Lady Merv, Oman, Abby, Cinemagirl and Not that Dave) — are excited to announce their first collaborative community endeavor: The Burner Lab!

Please save the date: Sunday, March 30th from 1pm til 6pm.

What’s The Burner Lab, you ask? Well!

It will be five full hours of opportunities to meet fellow Burning Man folks, much like our annual Meet & Greet, but this time it’s happening SOONER!  And so there will be plenty of time to:

* Represent your theme camp to recruit new members!
* Come in search of a theme camp looking for new members!
* Show off your concepts, designs, sketches, ideas and (American?) dreams for your 2008 Burning Man art projects!  And perhaps find people to help you realize your dream!
* Look for artists who need help with their projects!
* Share your very special talent: EL Wiring, Glue Gunning, Poi Spinning (no fire, just tennis balls or bean bags, please!), Sewing, Tiara Making (can someone fly Stacycats into town? Or “represent”?), Tutu Making, etc.
* Come and learn a new talent!
* Any other fabulous ideas you wonderfully creative people might have!

If you would like to PRESENT (teach a craft, show off your art project ideas, represent your theme camp), please email me offlist so I can schedule you, make sure you have space and include you in future announcements!

If you would like to PARTICIPATE, please mark your calendar and stop on by.  Plus stay tuned for future announcements about what will be happening when, so you can catch what interests you.

This will be an Open House type event, ALL AGES, and nothing will be for sale.  The venue is the Lower East Side Girls’ Club on First St.  just off of First Ave.  They have graciously offered their space for only the cost of one staff person to open up for us.  We would love for this to be a FREE event but we are asking everyone to make a donation if you can afford to.  Any money raised beyond the $50 for their staff person will be donated to the LESGC to help send their girls to New Orleans:

“With your support we will be able to take 25 girls and staff to New Orleans in April to participate in VDay events, meet local young women, and work with the YA/YAs-youth artists.” http://www.girlsclub.org

This event will also be a Leave No Trace event, so please plan on cleaning up after yourselves!  We hope to have a few surprises for you in addition to the oodles of creative and social opportunities!  And it’ll also be the perfect place to meet ALL FIVE of your friendly Regionals face to face!

Get ready to cook up some magical things at The Burner Lab!

We are very much looking forward to seeing you!
– Abby, Cory, Alex, Dave and Oscar

NOWHERE 2008 – EUROPEAN REGIONAL BURN

Nowhere 2008!
European Regional Burn
9th – 13th July, 2008 Monegros Spain

It’s time to start thinking about Nowhere again – although I’m sure lots of you already were!  It’s time again to go to the Middle of Nowhere for all that art, pirates, sun, munchkins, desert, cowboys, theme camps, ninjas and geishas, parties, rock stars, mujahideen, costumes, French love and Irish pubs, lemmings, burrows and more.  Chai in the desert and dance-offs.  Wigs and wookies.  Miss Nowhere and gorgeous toilets.  Mullets.  Not to mention the Radical Self Reliance and Self Expression that you know you just LOVE!!!  So no moping or mooping, get your tickets NOW!

Don’t miss out- Tickets are NOW ON SALE!

As last year there are three levels of tickets:

€60 – low income – on sale 1st February to 29th February

And for kids aged 5-12 on sale 1st February to 30th May, both by emailing letmein (at) goingnowhere (dot) org

€90 – adult tickets – on sale 1st February to 30th May for sale online on the website at http://www.goingnowhere.org/tickets

€120 – full-price tickets – on sale 1st February up to 30th June, available online.

Being a relatively new event, Nowhere needs your support at the highest ticket level you can afford.  Please help us by buying the €120 tickets if you can.  Your purchase of a 120 Euro ticket helps someone on a lower income to attend the event.

Nowhere is a pre-sales event.  You can not just turn up.  No tickets are for sale at the gate.  The cost of your ticket purchase goes towards the not-inconsiderable amount of organisation and infrastructure that is required to build Nowhere from nothing and return it to nothing afterwards.

Also a large proportion of ticket sales goes towards funding art at Nowhere.  If you are interested in applying for an art grant for your project go to http://www.goingnowhere.org/ArtGrants

Those of you with kids will have noticed that again this year there is a ticket price for children.  We’ve committed to start accommodating kids, but we need parents’ help in founding safe spaces for them.  There’ll be more on this in a newsletter soon.  For tickets:
– you can bring kids under 5 free but please let us know
– kids 5-12 are welcome with €60 tickets
– kids 13-17 are considered adults for ticketing but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian

Get ready to Go Nowhere!!

Love,
The NOrg crew
