Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 12, Issue #15
May 6, 2008

Well, now, this is what we like to see. This past weekend, the Bay Area was absolutely abuzz with events and activities inspired by Burning Man, or fed by the culture. From the Maker Faire, to the How Weird Street Festival, Fire Drums to a Burners Without Borders global beach clean-up, we’re excited to see each of them taking off in popularity, with more like ’em coming down the pipe — and not just in the Bay Area, mind you. Excellent? Most certainly.

The beauty part here, folks, is that none of the above are in any way “official” Burning Man events. They’re the product of people’s inspired imaginations, driven by the pure will to express one’s self creatively, and to bring that out into the world with the help of like-minded people. Many of the skills and techniques they’re employing? Learned on the playa. The net result is mindblowing. And also? Infectious. We were all agog watching the creative sparks fly in our community this weekend, and the ideas about what could be done next, and how, were catching fire. Now you … you make something cool happen in your community. Seriously. And when you do, tell us about it!

OK, so that’s our moment of fond musing for this edition. Und zo, onward to the immediate matters at hand! Fcha!

Theme camp registration ends May 31st, don’t forget … if you’re planning a large-scale camp that you intend to pre-register, well, get on it! Do it here: http://forms.burningman.com … oh, and our Placement Team tells us the Leave No Trace plans that have been coming in are a bit … um … lacking? Yeah, ya might want to bone up on your LNT plan-fu here before you hurt yourself: http://tinyurl.com/3eseto

In the Latest News, our wonderful ticket ladies tell us about low income and scholarship tickets (as in, they’re still available), and our Exodus crew imparts some important info about Exodus (that sad day when you begrudgingly turn tail and depart Black Rock City).

The kids at Black Rock Solar (Burning Man’s spun-off non-profit, making like Johnny Appleseed, only with solar power) are currently installing a 60KW solar array at The Natchez Elementary School on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe’s Reservation in Nevada. You can read all about it on BRS’s spiffy new website http://www.blackrocksolar.org. Oh, and this! Black Rock Solar was picked as one of People Magazine’s “Environmental Heroes” for 2008. For reals. See? http://tinyurl.com/64yj3f Just … um … (it’s completely surreal to say this, but …) scroll down until you see Beyonce.

What’s going on with the Black Rock Arts Foundation, you ask? Well, they’re busy. Having just wrapped up a stunning Flip Your Lid fundraiser, they’ve now announced their Art Grant Recipients for 2008. And as if that’s not enough, they’re simultaneously coordinating the installation of Homoroborous (AKA “The Monkeys” or “Holy crap, did you see *that*?”) in San Jose, unveiling it on May 15th … and they could use your help with that project, by the way … read on for how.

Finally, “Burn on the Bayou”, the excellent documentary tracking the creation of Burners Without Borders has its world premiere at the Santa Cruz Film Festival on May 15th. Whether or not there will be a red carpet and/or paparazzi involved is unclear, but if you go, please do represent, knowuddimsayin’? For more information about this film, visit: http://www.burnonthebayou.com

Now, how’d you like to get your participate on? Yeah? Well, you can make art for Center Camp Cafe as part of their “Dreamscape Project”, or help make sweet graphic design love happen for Burning Man. And if you’ve seen our print materials before, you know we don’t mess around. See the “Participate” section down yonder to find out how to jump on these opportunities.

Whole lotta interesting events happening, as usual, including the Black Rock Rendezvous, Earth Guardians’ Train the Trainer Camping Event, Apogea (the Colorado Regional Burn), and FIGMENT in New York. Now, while FIGMENT is not an official Burning Man event, it’s certainly inspired by it, and it’s run by Burners, and it’s a special flavor of AWEsome … and we’re just saying people should be doing these sorts of events EVERYWHERE … where people = you. Our “Events” section has the goods.

Finally, we leave you with some great photography and images from Black Rock City, including the photography of Tom Pendergast, Tony Deifell (and his “why do you do what you do?” project), a “21 Days of Black Rock City” photo exhibition in Petaluma, CA, and documentation of last year’s funded projected “The Cone”.

Now get out there and make something happen, huh? Burn on.

-PQ (Associate Rabbit)

EXODUS! IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT GETTING OUT OF BLACK ROCK CITY

Burning Man is fast approaching, and as important as figuring how you are getting there is how you are planning to leave, and when. Exodus gets more interesting every year as the population of Black Rock City grows. It’s important that you know what to expect and plan accordingly. To state it simply, the highway that leads away from BRC is at capacity for most of the time that Exodus is running. Short of building a bigger highway between BRC and Reno, there is not much we can do to get more cars off the playa any faster. What we can do though is make the process as run as smoothly and efficiently as possible, but for that we need your cooperation and participation.

Plan on a 3 – 4 hour wait, on average, in line from BRC to the paved highway, Highway 34. Plan for another 3 hours or more from the start of the highway to Reno. Either of these times could increase to as high as 6 hours or more if there are accidents or other traffic issues, including too many people trying to leave BRC all at once.

If you are making flight reservations or need to get somewhere at a certain time, take this into account. You should not plan on leaving the city and catching a flight the same day! Give yourself some safety margin. Also be aware that if you leave in the evening, you may be driving until early in the morning. Be prepared. Be safe.

So you are asking, “What can we do? When is it best to leave?” Any night from 2am to dawn, Monday night after dark, or yes, Saturday before the Man burns traditionally have less congestion and are the best times to leave. However this does not mean that there will not be any line, you should plan on the same wait times mentioned above.

As far as what you can do, start listening to BMIR radio when you are getting ready to leave, and hang around your packed vehicles in camp. When you hear a positive status report, jump in line. If you hear things are backed up, stay in camp and enjoy a little more of our fair city … does your camp need another MOOP sweep? Once in line follow the signals from the Exodus personnel on gate road and Flaggers on the highway. When lining up use all the lanes we have laid out for you. There are eight lanes that lead from the city and the process runs much better if all the lanes are used; don’t just fill up two of the lanes if they are all marked as open.

Be sure to read your Survival Guide or check the Burning Man web site for more detailed information on Exodus.

Above all, keep that playa vibe with you! No sense getting road rage, cutting in front of your fellow community members, or trying to dangerously pass cars on the highway in order to save a few minutes. Take your time, have fun, and remember, Leave no Trace and the community spirit do not stop once you leave Black Rock City.

Want to do more? We need your help! This year Exodus will need more people than ever. We run shifts from Saturday night all the way through Monday, as well as set up earlier in the week and tear down after our operations end. To volunteer for Exodus fill out the questionnaire at http://www2.burningman.com/people/.

Happy Leaving.

Your Exodus Team

BLACK ROCK SOLAR INSTALLING 60KW SOLAR ARRAY IN WADSWORTH

We are (we think rightfully) very proud of the activities of Black Rock Solar, the new non-profit Burning Man spin-off whose mission is to “speed the adoption curve of renewable energy, by building low or no cost solar power in unlikely places.” They make that happen, and you can help if you want. Hit their website and learn how: http://www.blackrocksolar.org

Here’s the nut of their press release about their latest effort, on the Natchez School near Pyramid Lake. For more info, see their website.

“Wadsworth, Nev. – April 15, 2007– The Natchez Elementary School on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe’s Reservation in Nevada will soon be home to a new solar energy system that will generate clean, reliable and free electricity from the sun. The project is being built by Black Rock Solar, with support from MMA Renewable Ventures and Nevada’s Sierra Pacific Power Company.

The 60 kilowatt solar power system is expected to generate 108,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, resulting in savings of approximately $360,000 over the next 25 years. Natchez Elementary School and the Washoe County School District will share the savings, with half directly supporting the school’s budget and the other half sponsoring a special fund to support conservation efforts throughout the district.”

And that? Is way cool.

– or if your pieces aren’t online, you are also welcome to send samples to us in the mail (include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you need your items returned to you.) Mail can be sent to Burning Man, Attn: Design, PO Box 884688, San Francisco, CA 94188-4688

CALL FOR “DREAMSCAPE” ARTISTS IN CENTER CAMP CAFE

Are you an artist or creative soul looking to contribute to the Burning Man event on a smaller scale? Well, the Center Camp Cafe has a project for you. The Cafe is currently seeking folks who are interested in participating in the “Dreamscape Project”, a multi- artist installation project in the heart of Black Rock City.

What is a Dreamscape? That’s up to your interpretation. We hope that you will express something that you have dreamed towards or about. This could be a visual translation of a dream you had. Or it can follow the theme of moving your life towards a goal, as in the prototypical American Dream. Or it can represent a hope or goal that you reached for but did not yet achieve. Your piece can be whimsical, literal, serious or esoteric.

Your Dreamscape will be placed inside the Cafe in an alcove. The space designated for your project will be 11′ W x 11′ H x 4′ D. (note: ‘ = feet) The project can be of any form, medium, or content. It is bounded only by the size of the space, safety concerns, and the limits of your imagination. Your Dreamscape can stand on the Cafe’s carpeted floor or it can be on a display surface.

Space is limited as we only have 12 alcoves, though we can always find room for your art elsewhere in the Cafe. Plan ahead to bring all items needed to install, maintain, breakdown and clean up MOOP.

Interested? Please read more at http://ferociouspixie.com/dreamscapes/index.html

“BURN ON THE BAYOU” PREMIERES AT SANTA CRUZ FILM FESTIVAL – SANTA CRUZ, CA – MAY 15

Burn on the Bayou premieres at the Santa Cruz Film Festival at the Riverfront Twin Theaters on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 7:00PM.

The Burn on the Bayou documentary follows the trials and tribulations of a group of Burning Man participants who, hearing about the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, took off their costumes and left the Burning Man event to see how they could help the victims of this natural disaster. This crew, soon to be known as Burners Without Borders (BWB), provided disaster relief with flair. Bringing the principles of the Burning Man Project to their work, BWB invited the communities they were helping to become a part not only of the revitalization of their neighborhood, but also to find art and personal expression in the midst of disaster.

To read all about the film, visit: http://www.burnonthebayou.com

APOGAEA: THE COLORADO REGIONAL BURN – LAKE GEORGE, CO – JUNE 5-8

“Tickets are now on sale for Apogaea, the Colorado Regional Burn. Come join us for our eighth year of fire, art, and music in the beautiful Colorado Rockies.

This year’s theme is ‘Smells Like Community Spirit,’ and while we certainly encourage participation with the theme, we do not suggest you forego bathing for weeks before the event just for us. Rather, the theme this year speaks to the synergistic nature of community. Some of the best fragrances in the world are created through a combination of factors. You have your high notes, your middle notes, and your base notes (and we know how so many of you love those bass notes!). But to have a truly stunning fragrance, we need all possible notes: top, base and everything in between. And the only way we can create such a stunning and memorable combination of is through YOUR participation. Whether it’s breaking sweat setting up camp or breaking sweat on the dance floor, playing with propane or glowing with UV paint, wandering through a pine forest or wresting in the mud, we look forward to smelling all of you at Apogaea 2008!

Tickets and further information can be found at www.apogaea.com.

Cheers, chel.C President/Apogaea Board of Directors”

EARTH GUARDIANS’ TRAIN THE TRAINER CAMPING EVENT – BLACK ROCK DESERT, NV – JULY 8

On June 7/8, Earth Guardians will host our annual Leave No Trace (LNT) camping trip in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. If you are interested in learning more about why Burning Man is the largest LNT event in the world and how you can help contribute by teaching LNT, this is the trip for you. We will also discuss ways to “green” Burning Man with past participants who come each year to reconnect and reinvigorate.

If you come, you will become a certified LNT trainer, meet other active Burners, see a part of the Black Rock Desert you probably haven’t seen before and have FUN at the same time. There is no charge for this training – it is sponsored by Burning Man.

Your mission, upon completion, will be to teach your fellow residents of Black Rock City how to Leave No Trace and Green Their Burn as well as spreading LNT ethics throughout your community and beyond. WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?

“Why do you do what you do?” (or “wdydwyd?” for short) got started on the playa back in 2004, and it’s one of our favorite projects. Its creator, Tony Deifell, takes striking photographs of people holding up a sign on which they’ve hand-written their answer to the question “Why do you do what you do?”. Over 500 burners have participated, and now it’s turned into a community art project where people have submitted photos from all over the world.

You can upload your own artistic creation or become a “Collaborating Artist” at http://wdydwyd.ning.com. Also, if you subscribe by email, you’ll get the blog each Monday with the best images and stories. Subscribe by email at this URL: http://tinyurl.com/4oxjv2

Oh, and last Halloween, Tony lugged an old-fashioned Polaroid camera to Burning Man headquarters and many of the staff dressed up in our Halloween worst for portraits, holding our own personal answer to that fateful question.

Each week from now until the Burn, Tony will post one BM staff member plus one Burner from last year on this blog: http://www.wdydwyd.com

INTERACTIVE DOCUMENTATION OF “THE CONE” ART PROJECT

One of last years funded art projects was “The Cone” by German students Manuel Kretzer and Hans Sachs. Here it is in our image gallery: http://tinyurl.com/4vvfdz

The artists have produced interactive documentation about the project. A 120 page full-color book and DVD including further video and audio material are the result of their final thesis project in architecture at the University of Karlsuhe. The book and DVD can now be ordered for 30 € or downloaded (as a low resolution PDF) for free at:

http://www.burning-man.eu (a 24-minute video clip about the trip can also be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/burnmaneu)

Manual and Hans tell us (with an awesome German accent): “This is a non-profit project. With vending the book and DVD we only try to cover the pure print-costs. Shipping costs vary depending on the ordered amount and the recipient’s country.”
