Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 12, Issue #16
May 29, 2008

What a great weekend for Regional events, y’all! This past Memorial Day weekend, Burners (or wannabe Burners) flocked to events like Playa del Fuego in Delaware and Flipside in Austin, TX. Our friends, staffers and far flung volunteers who attended these events have brought back the word (on stone tablets, no less), and the word was good. As do all good regional events, they rocked seriously hard, while upholding the 10 Principles that guide Burning Man culture. (OK, we admit it … our staffers rocked hard too.)

Keep an eye out for upcoming Burner events near you, and make it out to them … you’re sure to have a great time. Big props to all the event producers out there! Next up? Dark Skies in Mojave Drums, Arizona … with more to come.

Oh, and if you’re anywhere in the area, go see “Homoroborous” in San Jose. Yep, the monkeys are up and spinning this month, and people are – unsurprisingly – blown away! Check out this link to the San Jose Mercury News http://tinyurl.com/5ceuep … then remember how you felt when you saw the Monkeys on the playa … then imagine it for a second in the middle of YOUR downtown. Right … whoa. Big ups and congratulations to BRAF, artist Peter Hudson, and members of the South Bay, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and other Bay Area regional communities!

And onward! We’ve got an important reminder coming from our Placement team that Theme Camp registration closes this Saturday, May 31st at 11:59pm PST. And yes, we’ve warned you before, so shush … just get on it! Oh and plus, they tell us there’s more room than ever being created in Center Camp this year, so if you have a highly interactive theme camp and want to have it in the core of things, this is your best chance yet. And, dirty little secret? Center Camp is the bomb. Details in Latest News, below.

Burning Man’s intrepid Technology Department is hosting a Playa Wireless Technology Summit on June 12, and if you’re a geek who sets up any large-scale WIFI internet technology on the playa, you should participate (in person, or remotely)! The goal is to ensure we don’t step all over each other out there with our various bits, bytes and wireless signals. Cameragirl tells all, below.

OK, so you want to participate in something? Yep, well, we got some opportunities. Design a sticker for Burning Man 2008 by competing in our sticker design contest … Bex has all the deets for ya. Reeeeally want to participate? Head down to Peru and help out the Burners Without Borders crew, now that their stay in Pisco has been extended to August 16th. And back on the playa, a cool-sounding art installation called “Temple of Community” (not to be confused with the “official” temple “Basura Sagrada”, please) is seeking artistic contributions from folks just like YOU.

Speeeeaking of the Basura Sagrada temple, Shrine and crew are throwing a fundraiser in San Francisco called “Sagrada” to support their efforts … please make it if you can. Shrine designed a stage and a temple at Lightning in a Bottle, and this Rabbit’s here to tell ya: they. were. outstanding. We’re now even more excited for Basura Sagrada than ever, and you should be too. Over in New York, meanwhile, Kate Raudenbush is having what looks to be a fun masquerade fundraiser for her art installation “Altered State”. Get there if’n you can.

Now, some have asked the Rabbit, “Say, Rabbit, why do you promote some fundraisers but not others?” Why, good question, reader. We have opted to include occasional fundraiser/local events announcements in the JRS not only to actually invite people to attend, but also to keep ALL of our readers informed about the development and lifecycle of certain larger-scale playa projects (such as theme art, for example, or other projects that will ultimately have a significantly large impact on Black Rock City). By doing so, we hope to share the excitement and momentum of such projects with the greater commmunity. SO YES, the default setting is for local events to be routed to the appropriate local announce list, but we will sometimes hand-pick a special announcement to share with this larger list, at the discretion of the Rabbits. Fair? We think so. Word? Word.

And finally, as has become a JRS tradition, we leave you with a small handful of nice photo galleries to blow a couple hours on. We are, if nothing else, here to erode your personal productivity, friends. Specifically, in our short aquaintance with the Black Rock Yearbook, we’ve become big fans (it just needs group shots of the various BRC clubs and sports teams, and it’ll be dialed in). Then Ed Hoffman offers his gallery for your perusal, and lastly, some Canadian artists are seeking folks who might have shot pictures of their Mushroom Kingdom project last year. You? Perhaps.

Get out there and do something awesome … or at least be awesome.
Burn on.

THEME CAMP REGISTRATION CLOSES SATURDAY, MAY 31

OK, you procrastinating slackers (and we say this with much love because we can truly sympathize), it’s time to get your rear in gear and get your theme camp registration in. If you haven’t already, visit: http://forms.burningman.com and submit your registration before the questionnaire is taken down at 11:59pm PST on Saturday May 31st.

Oh, and we should note that the city designers have expanded the dimensions of Center Camp this year (the area surrounding the Cafe), and there is a LOT more land there to be had.

Interactive camps with a population of 30-40 campers will now fit in Center Camp. Camps should be:

– Visually interesting
– Theme-related is a plus
– Activities and events for all ages
– Demonstrating Burner ethos
– 24 hr activity, but not loud. (No large scale sound art camps)

Think of the possibilities! So close to Ice and the Cafe you can practically smell the coffee. Those interested in camping there should mark “Center Camp” as a preference when registering. Those who have already registered but would like to change their preference to Center Camp can email placement@burningman.com, and they’ll see if you’re ready to “play the palace.”

CALLING ALL GEEKS: PLAYA WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT – JUNE 12

Are you an artist, camp and/or geek who brings wireless/internet technology to the playa?

If you are planning a large-scale technological project, have an art project that absolutely requires Internet connectivity, or will be beaming any sort of bits and bytes into the airwaves above the playa, you are cordially invited and strongly requested to participate at the Burning Man Technology Department will be hosting our second Playa Wireless Summit at 7 pm on June 12, 2007. If you’re not in the area, write to us for info on how to dial in.

PLEASE RSVP and get more info by responding to this post at playatech (at) burningman (dot) com . It would be great if you could give us a few details on your project.

Burning Man HQ: http://www.burningman.com/officedirections

When we say “technology”, we don’t mean just a laptop to check your email once during the week when you randomly hop on the WIFI cloud provided by the good folks at Internet at Burning Man. We’re talking about the kind of geek who brings a whole car full of technology and towers and beams bits and bytes all over the playa and into the universe.

Well, from one geek to another… we all know that these bits and bytes that we are beaming all over the playa will play a lot nicer with each other — and get to where they are supposed to be going — if we all talk about what we are planning to do and work together ahead of time. Heck, we may even be able to help each other out a bit on our projects!

Please let us know the nature of your project, and feel free to get as geeky as you wannabe – we’ll get it. You’ll be invited to attend the Summit where we’ll talk geek talk and compare the size of our towers and other fun things like that.

Once again, if you are bringing “heavy geekery” like repeaters and towers, or you have a project that MUST have an Internet connection, we need to hear from you.

Send us a ping at playatech (at) burningman (dot) com.

Thanks!

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, Burning Man has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away. We would like to carry on this tradition and honor those who have impacted our Burning experiences and participated in making Burning Man happen. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost who you feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque. Please send their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com (please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this JRS!!)

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August 25th) through Friday (August 29th).

2008 BURNING MAN STICKER DESIGN CONTEST

The lovely and talented Bex says:

“It’s that time of year again – time for our annual sticker contest!

This is the official call for designs for the 2008 Burning Man stickers that are passed out with the materials you receive at the Greeters station in Black Rock City (and other designs that appear randomly in your hands at other points in time).

These stickers are two or three colors and can vary in size from 2.25″ by 5.5″ to 3″ by 3″ or 3″ in diameter for a round design. Please incorporate the name Burning Man and the year 2008 into your design. These are two or three color stickers only so please design accordingly.

If at all possible, please post your design on a web page and send the URL to Bex; otherwise send in a color separated vector Adobe Illustrator file to bex (at) burningman (dot) com. Whether sending your design or questions, please put “STICKER DESIGN” in the subject header. HEY, remember there IS a theme, and we like stickers that attempt to use the theme – this year’s theme is: The American Dream.

We are also looking for designs for the 2008 car stickers. This sticker is traditionally a car window sticker that will be printed on clear vinyl and in two colors. Please make sure designs contain the Burning Man name and the year 2008. Designs should be 2″ by 2″ or 2″ diameter if round. If at all possible, please post your design on a web page and send the URL to Bex; otherwise send in a color separated vector Adobe Illustrator file to bex (at) burningman (dot) com. Please put “STICKER DESIGN” in the subject header. Ditto here on the theme!

THEME: http://www.burningman.com/art_of_burningman/bm08_theme.html

The deadline for design submissions is Monday June 16th.

Please note that all artwork selected for stickers needs to be submitted in a color separated vector Illustrator file in the actual size the sticker is to be produced.

Thank you and Good Luck!

Bex”

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS TO HELP IN PERU

The equally lovely and talented Carmen writes us to say:

“Burners without Borders is excited to announce that our Peru reconstruction effort has been extended to August 16th, and we need you to come down and volunteer to help us continue to make a huge impact in the lives of those most affected by the earthquake. Please go to http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org to check out what we’ve been up to, and take a look at the colorful school that BWB volunteers just completed. You can also read all about BWB’s efforts from the volunteers’ perspective in our new blog.

Please join us! If you are unable to volunteer this time around, please consider making a donation. It is only due to the support from the larger community that we have been able to make a difference.”

PARTICIPATE IN THE “TEMPLE OF COMMUNITY” ART INSTALLATION

The artists creating the “Temple of Community” installation would (ironically) like the community to participate … here’s how. They relate:

“What Is It? An American Dream … though we all may be different, together we are a community. We offer you each a way to flaunt your unique individuality in an art project which when gathered together will create Sembazuru, the ‘Temple of Community’.

The Temple of Community is a thirty-foot-high rendition of an origami crane. It is said that a person who folds 1,000 cranes will be granted his or her greatest wish, a practice called Sembazuru in Japan. On the playa, Sembazuru will be a temple for mourning, reflection and release. The crane symbolizes the act of letting go – of loved ones, places, feelings, ideas. It is a celebration of life, death and a starting anew, of making wishes, and finding peace together with our community that is united in this experience.

Encircling this central figure will be YOUR individual, unique renditions of smaller cranes. The Gateway to the Future (http://www.midwestburners.com/interfuse/artandartists.html) will welcome all into this circle. The large crane will provide shelter from the sun and have a viewing platform on its back. Participants will be able to fold Origami cranes and place them or other memorabilia inside wooden coffins which will be burned along with all the cranes at the end of the week.

Call to Action! We are asking theme camps, regional groups, as well as individuals to create their own wooden scaled-down version of an origami crane. These smaller cranes will be gathered around the base of the main structure. We will provide a burn platform large enough for the baby cranes, so all you need to do is make sure that your crane won’t take flight on the playa winds!

For more information please visit us at:

SEEKING PHOTOS OF THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM PROJECT

FireDollJamie writes to request a little help finding some pics of their art project … says Jamie:

“In 2007 an amazing group of Canadian fungais and gals came together to build the Mushroom Kingdom art installation on the deep playa. Unfortunately, we were so focused on the building of the installation that we forgot to take time to capture photos or videos of the completed installation. We have found one Flickr set (http://tinyurl.com/5xot37) of it, before the massive Thursday afternoon dust storm blew it down. While it stood, it was roughly parallel to the Temple and straight out from the portapotties off the 10:00 arm of the city.

I was hoping that some other Burners might have captured it and could share the photos? People can email jamie.oastler (at) gmail (dot) com if so.

Happy dusty thoughts,
FireDollJamie”
