Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 13, Issue #3: DECOMPRESSION ROUND-UP
September 25, 2008

If you’re itching to get your burn back on, we’ve got yer scratch right here. Yes, yes we do. While we tried to resist the urge to boast “We Are Everywhere”, well, we are everywhere. From Milwaukee to Flagstaff, Ireland to South Africa, Burners around the globe will participate in Decompression events to bring back that good ol’ feeling one more time … howz about you?

In this issue, we’ve compiled a round-up of all the official Decompression events we know of, including detailed descriptions for two biggies: San Francisco and Los Angeles … sweet, huh? For more information about any one of them, please visit the websites listed, or email the regional contact at the email address provided. They’re the final word on any location or date changes, and more able to answer any questions you have than we will be (well, except SF, but that’s some pretty detailed info for that one already, down below…). Cool? Cool. And, as always you can find your local regional contact here: http://regionals.burningman.com

In case you’re wondering, an “official” Decompression event is one organized out of a regional group (generally speaking, that means one with a formally recognized Regional Contact, btw) that has gone out of the way to apply for official status and meet the criteria for being an official event – including adhering to and upholding Burning Man’s Ten Principles.

So that means if you see a Decom listed here, you and anyone you want to bring along are welcome (Principle #1 – Radical Inclusion: ” We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.”) and that the event is based on everyone’s participation (Principles 5, 6, 9, and 10 all refer to participation and self expression and immediacy … and … what’s that? You’re new to the Ten Principles? Here, brush up: http://tinyurl.com/d3unc). And betcha didn’t know the word “Decompression” is actually trademarked and saved for events that benefit the entire local community, not just one group or camp. Yep, that’s right. So what that means is this is your opportunity to engage with the maximum number of hometown Burners and see what your local community is all about!

There are also numerous “unofficial” post burn events all over the place, of course, and events that are affiliated with regional groups but not necessarily called “Decompressions” per se — and because it’s such an exotic location we couldn’t resist sharing info on such an event that’s happening near Rome (yes, in Italy) October 10-12 … email Dario and Matteo, our Italian regional contacts, at italy (at) burningman (dot) com for more information. How cool would that be, right? History would indicate they’re known for hospitality, those Italians…

Now, let’s say you aren’t physically proximate to any of these locations. Sucks. Ah, but we have an option for you too! Danger Ranger is hosting a virtual Decompression at the Burning Life Festival in Second Life (he and wife Dusty are our first-ever virtual world regional contacts – holding down the fort at secondlife@burningman.com!). That’s online, so if you’ve got a decent computer and an internet connection (if you didn’t, you wouldn’t be reading this), you can join in the fun there. Learn more below.

Please to enjoy your decompression, wherever it may be, and take a moment to appreciate your fellow Burners in all their glory.

VIRTUAL DECOMPRESSION AT BURNING LIFE FESTIVAL IN SECOND LIFE: Sept 27 – Oct 5

You can get your Decompression on, without leaving home, at Burning Life ’08, in the virtual world of Second Life. This is the sixth year that Burning Life will be celebrated in Second Life, and this year, since many real-world burners are long-time participants in the Burning Life community, Danger Ranger has organized the first Burning Man Regional group in a virtual world.

We’d like to invite you to join us “inworld” for this one-week event, from September 27th to October 5th. You can visit the art installations, attend live events, and participate in the experience.

Burning Life is an online event inspired by Burning Man. It follows the same Ten Principles (see:http://tinyurl.com/d3unc ), including immediacy and participation. Burning Life takes place in Second Life, a 3-D virtual world created by its Residents, inhabited by millions of Residents from around the globe.

This year, Burning Life 2008 offers us an opportunity to experience all the usual fixtures of the real life playa: DPW, Greeters, Rangers, Lamplighters, large scale art, bicycles and even a virtual dust storm. Shouting Fire/BMIR will be streaming radio into this virtual festival. Nearly 400 Second Life Residents have signed up to create unique art and performances for the event, including large works of art, interactive theme camps, a fashion show and of course, the burning of the Man amid a fireworks display. It’s even rumored that Larry Harvey will make an appearance during the event.

To learn more about the event visit the Burning Life website:

http://burninglife.secondlife.com

Here is how you can participate: Download the free software here: http://secondlife.com/join/ and install it; this is similar to a web browser but you are in a 3-D environment. When you first launch Second Life, you will be “born” with a new name as an “avatar,” which can be customized whenever and however you like. Just like at Burning Man, how you present yourself is completely up to you. When you first arrive, you’ll see a short tutorial to orient you on how to get around Second Life. Then, take yourself up gate road, through the Greeters, and remember how great it is to be a playa virgin again!

Preparations for Burning Life have been ongoing for months, and the “camping” (building) space is already full for this year. But there are still plenty of ways to participate. Playafy your avatar, and enter the fashion show. Grab a public art car or green bike and start exploring. Offer to help a camp throw an event. Join the Lamplighters. Haunt the stage at the Center Camp Cafe, where live music and performance will be happening 24 hours a day! If you already have Second Life building skills, you can sign up for a porta-potty art project.

If you would like to join the discussion list for this new Regional event, you need to attend Burning Life and visit the Regional Information Booth located across from the Center Camp Cafe.

If you would like to be on the announce list for the Burning Life Regional group, send a blank email to secondlife-announce-subscribe (at) burningman (dot) com

We hope to see you there!
