Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 13, Issue #5
October 23, 2008

Greetings everybody, hope this finds you well. We’ve certainly got no shortage of interesting stuff for you in this edition of the Jack Rabbit Speaks!

Like what, you ask? Well, the departure of Burning Man’s long-time art curator, an upcoming Burning Man regional event in Antarctica (yes, Antarctica!! That’s like … the South Pole, people!), Ketchup in North Carolina, a plea from the Disco Duck, photos from lost cameras posted, The Man dancing in a music video (no, that’s not a typo), and a report-out from the Burning Life virtual Burn.

Did I mention this stuff was interesting? Yeah, well, there you go. Any questions?

And hey, we’d just like to take a moment to say thanks to our community for being so great in so many ways. While that may sound cheesy, we see a lot of stuff come across our radar from all corners of wherever, and we never cease to be amazed by our folks and their enduring ability make interesting — and incredible — things happen.

So there. That should satisfy your cheesy quota for this week.

Oh and lastly, please remember, they’re YOUR rights … use ’em or lose ’em. Get out and VOTE. That is all.

Be well, everybody.

A FOND FAREWELL FROM LADYBEE, BURNING MAN’S ART CURATOR

We were quite saddened when LadyBee, Burning Man’s art curator, announced that she would be leaving our fold and moving on to a new (and exciting) career opportunity, after an illustrious 10-year tenure with the Burning Man Project. We wish LadyBee all the best that this new direction can offer, and want to thank her from the bottom of our hearts for her years of dedication to the art and artists of Burning Man.

LadyBee’s last day at BMHQ was last Friday, and she asked that we share this with the community:

“October 17, 2008. Today is my last day at the Burning Man office, and I’d like to thank the whole community for an incredibly interesting ten years!

I started working as the art curator in 1999, the year the art grant program came into being. That was before the ARTery existed, before we received hundreds of grant proposals each year, and long before we had a gigantic art map with hundreds of art installations on it. It was long before we had the huge, widespread community that we have now. It’s been a long, fascinating, and very rewarding journey, and I’m a little sad to be leaving … but very excited about my new work.

With gratitude and great appreciation for this amazing community,

– LadyBee”

HEY! I RECOGNIZE THAT GUY (GAL, CAMP, WHATEVER)!

Terry (aka “Lawstonfound”) writes us to help YOU get reuinted with your stuff. Read on:

“Please go to http://tinyurl.com/5vlkhfto review images from lost and found cameras.

Okay all of you who lost a camera at Burning Man 2008: you haven’t gotten around to writing lostandfound (at) burningman (dot) com have you? Or maybe you didn’t catch our previous lost and found posts? We’ve inventoried all the cameras, wallets, and backpacks, and hardly anybody has replied to our eplaya posts here:

http://tinyurl.com/5z6zn7

(If you don’t have an ePlaya account, register here: http://eplaya.burningman.com )

[Important tips: don’t post your lost camera in the middle of someone else’s lost camera ePlaya thread — ’cause it’ll get overlooked. Rather, make a NEW TOPIC and put your camera make and model in the SUBJECT line. Be sure to list lost items under “lost”, and if you found something, list it under . . . “found” (Duh!)]

If the descriptions on the ePlaya aren’t connecting the dots — ’cause you can’t REMEMBER what model number camera yours was — we’ve got some images posted now that EVERYONE should take a gander at. Even if you didn’t lose a camera, maybe you know the folks depicted, and can give them a nudge?

– Grave markers of Norma and David Lewis?
– Who’s Jellyfish Marine Biology experiment is that?
– Clown makeup, Zombie makeup, an autographed photo of President Bush inscribed to Adam?
– Reflected shots in the blue sonic installation mirror with a yellow japanese parasol?

Come on, don’t make us post the embarrassing, really personal stuff … (okay, we wouldn’t).

Those big numbers on all the images indicate the year and the camera the pictures are from.

Please go to http://tinyurl.com/5vlkhf to review images from lost and found cameras.

Reference the camera number in the subject line when writing lostandfound (at) burningman (dot) com. We’ll want to confirm the camera type, model, and maybe a description of other images that we didn’t post.

CLOTHES AND KEYS – We’ve got too many lost clothes and keys to inventory, but if you haven’t written lostandfound (at) burningman (dot) com for this stuff, please do and we’ll do our best. We’re gonna concentrate on that stuff now. Be VERY specific in descriptions please.

Our lost and found reunion efforts end January 15th. With your help, we’ll have many more happy reunions!”

MICHAEL MIKEL RECAPS BURNING LIFE 2008

The Rabbit asked Michael Mikel (aka Danger Ranger) to give us a recap of the activities in Burning Life 2008, which took place in the virtual world of Second Life recently. After giving us a tour of the virtual playa, which was actually really cool, M2 provided this report:

“‘Both Burning Man and the Internet make it possible to re-gather the tribe of mankind…. We must use technology to create space stations here on planet Earth, islands of intense and living contact.’
– Larry Harvey, January 1997

BURNING LIFE Over the course of 8 days, 15,000 participants visited the virtual world 2008 Burning Life festival.

There are nearly 2,400 photos in the Burning Life Flickr pool: http://www.flickr.com/groups/burninglife/

The YouTube videos are starting to surface.

90% of human sensory input is visual. As crude as the current technology is that provides the platform for Burning Life may be, the brain processes the experience as real. The Lamplighters illuminate this concept more than any other group.

THE MAN DANCES IN A MUSIC VIDEO

Now, while this may be somewhat unsettling in that Ally McBeal dancing baby kinda way, we guess this is flattering. The Man, it would seem, is morphing into popular culture. Is that good? Is that bad? Is that indifferent? Decide for yourself. Either way, you can watch the video on those fancy YouTubes here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCmXhNBjOYI

[Editor’s Note: here’s an interesting piece of trivia: YouTube’s user interface was designed in part by? The founder of Bianca’s Smut Shack. Old time Burners who gorged themselves on Bianca’s … um … magazines and grilled cheese sandwiches will appreciate that in some weird way. If nothing else, we made you think about Bianca’s. Mmmmm.]

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

“KETCHUP!” ART PIECE INSTALLED IN THE REAL WORLD

Speaking of mmmmm, Bruce Bender, the artist who created the “Ketchup!” art installation and french fry shack that was in the 4:30 plaza, writes to tell us it’s been displayed in the real world. We always like to hear that, especially because the piece was made possible by a Burning Man honoraria grant (read: you helped fund it, people!). He writes:

“Ketchup! – the 32′ ketchup bottle fry shack travelled home to Western North Carolina and was installed in downtown Asheville Sept 13-14. 15 local painters had their works on display along with four bands, a troupe of trapeze dancers, a juggling clown, and ketchup!.

The event initiated a partnership between a local computer store, the local community college, and the Eblen Foundation (http://www.eblencharities.org ) a local non-profit helping people in need. The partnership aims to gift computers to people who might otherwise not be able to afford them.

Still working on a concise gallery, but some photos are at:

“THE EMERALD PORTALS” ART INSTALLATION DISPLAYED IN SF

Harlan Emil Gruber writes to let us know that the Emerald Portals art installation will be displayed in SF as part of the 2012 Conference. Cool! Harlan, by the way, makes some great stuff. Anyway, he reports:

“The Emerald Portals will be on public display free of charge at Fort Mason Center at the intersection of Marina Boulevard and Buchanan Street, in the Marina district (there is no street address) Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 in conjunction with the 2012 Conference. Call 800-984-0897 for more info. They were originally created for Burning Man and are now on tour to a variety of other venues and festivals.

They incorporate geometry, sound and color to provide an interactive environment for participants to experience. The intention is to provide a portal to the vibrational dimension the Earth is shifting to. They can align the multi-dimensional vibrational body of the participant’s to the Earth’s and the Galaxy’s by utilizing colors that influence participant’s energy bodies, geometrical forms that relate to the Earth’s energy body and the sound sculpture the ‘Quasar Wave Transducer’ that emits low frequencies in the range of the Earth’s Schumann resonance and human brain waves. Once a vibrational alignment is achieved between personal, planetary and galactic, a harmonious shift of dimensions can take place.

“Hi. I was one of the Co-Producers of the giant Disco Duck art car and am recapping the project with a web site. It would be great if I could ask for pictures and video from others.

FREEZING MAN!! ANTARCTICA’S BURNING MAN REGIONAL EVENT – NOV 21

This? Is way cool (so to speak). Lavendyr writes to tell us about the upcoming Freezing Man, down yonder in Antarctica. Says she:

“I can hardly believe its happening, but McMurdo Station is actually going to be hosting the first (un)official regional Burning Man event to occur on the Antarctic continent … YAY!! Our event is called ‘Freezing Man’ – how appropriate!!

Our date is Black Friday, Nov 21st, since the only 2-day weekend of the entire season will be Thanksgiving weekend. Since this is all happening in just a month, we’re in a dead panic. Because recieving mail from the US can take up to a month, the planning committee is up against a wall trying to get anything ordered in time to make it down here if we want anything from off-continent to add to the festivities.

Anything you guys can think of to share with us to help make it happen and actually feel like Burning Man would be freaking awesome… Body paints, blinkies, schwag/gifites, (small, mailable) art, extra costumes, HULA HOOPS or HOOP MAKING SUPPLIES, photos, love, movies, or anything else (except Playa dust- NOOOO Playa dust can be introduced to the continent, unfortunately) you’d like to contribute to help seed the budding Burner community here, would be a huge gift!! (Actually, there are a lot of folks here that go to the Burn, but we only got the word yesterday that our event was approved, so no one was quite prepared to get it going this fast.)

I promise that all those who contribute anything to ‘Freezing Man, Antarctica’ will get some ‘cool’ schwag mailed back as a thank you … just be sure to include your return address with your items!

Also, any IDEAS you have for small-scale stuff we could *do* would also be welcome…

Mailing addresses you can use are below … I would recommend splitting stuff up between the people listed, in case the mail-sorters in New Zealand decide I’m getting too much stuff for my own good (if you send it all to me), and hold packages back (silly military…).

Mailing guidelines include:
NO packing peanuts (they’re banned from the continent)
NO porn (banned from NZ customs)
NO alcohol (very sad, but true)
NO explosives/fireworks
NO plants, dirt/Playa, produce, animals, rocks

– Packaged/non-perishable food is fine
– Use green or the white customs forms, with general descriptions of items (i.e. ‘clothing’, ‘decorations’, ‘light bulb’, ‘craft supplies’, ‘toiletries’, ‘toys’, etc.)
– If it’s SMALL and HEAVY, use one of the ‘Flat Rate Priority Boxes- Domestic’ for the best rate.
The postal rate is whatever it costs to mail something in the US to San Francisco (not international postage … so its not outrageously expensive, just normal domestic postage rates … but go ‘Priority’ so we can get it in time.) Include your return address (inside the box) if you want your item back!!

Addresses:
Pick ONE of the names below-

Robyn Broyden, RPSC
Scott Gilbert, NANA
Jason Bryenton, RPSC
Cary Marger, RPSC

and use the following address:

McMurdo Station
PSC 469 Box 700
APO AP 96599-1035

To those that take the time and effort to gift us with the energy of the DPW and our home on the Playa, we are eternally grateful!!

After this event, we can officially say that Burning Man is alive and well on every continent on Earth!!

Much love from the frigid south,
robyn aka Lavendyr”

A NOTE ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHERS’ GALLERIES PUBLISHED IN THE JRS

We’d like to thank all the photographers who have sent in their galleries for inclusion in this periodic section of the JRS. And so you know, we hand-pick the galleries to publish and we only select the most visually powerful collections for publication, and endeavor to share only those where model releases are on file and participant privacy has been clearly respected. We intend what we share here to really be the best of the best. To get an idea of what we mean by that, see NK Guy’s collection, below. Cool? Cool. And if you’ve sent one in, please be patient, we’ll get to it in time.

And with that, on to the gallery for this edition …!

NK GUY’S PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY

As usual, NK Guy offers up a visually stunning set of photographs from this year’s Burn. As an added bonus, he’s included his pictures from Nowhere 2008, the (now) annual Burning Man regional event in the high desert of Spain, which you should go to, by the way. Just sayin’.
