Howdy all, hope this finds you well, and getting amped up for the playa!

To help you along in this regard, Thursday night is our annual Desert Arts Preview event here in San Francisco, wherein the principal artists working on honorarium art projects are going to be giving talks about their pieces. Normally, most of you are SOL when it comes to getting to it in person, it being in SF and all, but this year? This year, we’re filming it, and we’ll be putting it up for y’all to stream, so you’ll be able to watch from the comfort of your computer. Cool huh? Yeah it is.

In this issue, we have inadvertently created an homage to the volunteer, completely coincidental to (but fully in the spirit of) the First Lady’s current efforts to encourage a national culture of volunteerism. Long story short, we’ve got a lot of volunteer opportunities within the Burning Man project and our sister organizations eagerly awaiting your involvement. Hop to it!

We’ve just finished up our editorial calendar for the remaining JRS editions between now and the event, and the next two months (eek!) are shaping up to be chock-a-block full of important information to ensure you get to, around, into, and off of the playa with the (relative) greatest of ease. They’re going to be coming at you fast and furious, so … get ready!

Finally, a word about the Resources Edition of the JRS. We do realize it’s getting late in the game, and we’re hard at work pulling together an alternative solution to our normal Resources Edition, which (again) we are not doing this year. Stay tuned for more information coming your way very shortly.

Until next time …

-Will
(Associate Rabbit)

LOW INCOME AND SCHOLARSHIP TICKET INFORMATION

The Low Income and Scholarship ticket programs closed on May 30. The ticket ladies have compiled some important information for those of you who have sent in applications. Here goes:

1. Please do NOT contact us asking to make an exception – the tickets are all spoken for.

B. If you applied for a Low Income ticket near the deadline, be patient! We received nearly 1,000 applications at the last minute, and we’re working through them.

iii. We have notified people who are not being awarded Low Income tickets. So if you haven’t heard from us, it does not mean you were not awarded a ticket.

IV. We hope to have everything in the mail by the second week in July. If you haven’t heard from us by then, please emailpartiserv (at) burningman (dot) com

5. If you applied for a Low Income ticket in mid-May and requested Secure Delivery, it requires a signature. Before you contact us, check with your post office to see if they are holding it for you. Any items returned to us will be held at Will Call (to be picked up by you at the Box Office at the front gate of the event.)

For general ticket questions, the answers are probably here: http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR BURNERS LOST – NAMES BY JULY 20

Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away within the last calendar year. This tradition continues today to honor people who have impacted our Burning experiences and participated in making Burning Man happen. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost this year who you feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque.

Submission of names: please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this JRS, but rather send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to:

remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com

Submissions need to be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque.

Submissions received after July 20th will be added to next year’s plaque.

PLANNING YOUR CAMP USING SKETCHUP? PRE-MADE CAMP PARTS AVAILABLE

Andrew Johnstone is one of the principle folks on the Burning Man Earth Project, which endeavors to recreate Black Rock City in Google Earth (which is rad). As part of the project, they’ve created 3D models of camp parts for use in SketchUp. So, if you’re using SketchUp to plan your camp, listen up …

“Burning Man Earth has a collection of ready made, true scale, low poly camp modules that can be downloaded, and dragged and dropped into place to plan out your camp. We would rather have users take from this collection, as the models are very economical in the poly count.

http://bit.ly/pbCpZ

They can the email their final camp file back to me at andrew (at) burningman (dot) com for inclusion in Burning Man Earth, so your camp will be on the Black Rock City map!”

PUT YOUR PLAYA CRAP ON THE BIG OLE MIDWEST CROSS-COUNTRY TRUCK!

Andy Wing writes of his novel method for resource sharing … there’s also a truck that comes from NYC … maybe YOU could start your own service?. Here’s Andy:

“Our tenth year! Camp Videogasm runs a truck cross country every Burn as a non-commercial venture. We charge enough to cover rental and fuel only. Our drivers are all volunteers.

The basics:

– $7 per cu ft ($6.50 per 100 cu ft block)
– There is an overweight surcharge. See the web site for details.
– PayPal or cash accepted up to 8/21, cash afterwards.

Truck loads in Wayne, PA (near Philadelphia) on Sat 8/22, leaves on Sun 8/23. Stopover in Detroit 8/24 – 8/25 for final load up. Arrival in BRC on Sat 8/29.

Repacking on Sun 9/6. The truck leaves BRC on Mon 9/7, arrives in Detroit on 9/11 and back in Wayne, PA on 9/12.

You can drop off your cargo in Wayne starting on Monday 8/3.

All generators/engines must be run dry and aired out!

Send questions to the contacts listed on the web site.

GIFT YOUR TIME: VOLUNTEER!

In case you missed it, our country’s First Lady has been working to encourage a culture of volunteerism with her United We Serve program, “a national initiative to tackle our toughest problems by working hand-in-hand in communities across the country. We aim to make a real difference right now and bring more and more Americans into a tradition of life-long service to make an even greater difference down the road.”

And we sure are on board with that notion. In that spirit, here are some places YOU can volunteer within the Burning Man project and our sister organizations. You can volunteer anywhere, anytime, regardless of geographic proximity. Check ’em out (and more opportunities follow):

BECOME A BLACK ROCK RANGER

Tiara of the Black Rock Rangers writes:

“Citizens of Black Rock City: The Black Rock Rangers are walking in the dust and riding the edge of chaos again in 2009.

Perhaps you’ve seen them traversing Black Rock City on foot or bicycle. They’re Burners just like you who work throughout the city and its perimeters – 24 hours a day – to try to ensure the collective well-being and survival of our playa community.

Easily identified by the logos on their khaki shirts and the laminates around their necks, Rangers are a close-knit group of volunteers who serve as Black Rock City’s eyes, ears, and tired & dusty feet. They act as non-confrontational community mediators, promote awareness of community standards and safety issues, and get front row seats while providing safety perimeters for themajor burns.

Curious about who the Black Rock Rangers are and how we practice our Art of Rangering on the playa? Want to *really* get to know Black Rock City? Want to find out more about becoming a Ranger? Then you are cordially invited to attend a Black Rock Ranger Training and check out one of the most double-super-throw-down cool, fun, and interesting volunteer groups on the playa.

There are two steps to becoming a Ranger: attend a one-day training before or at the beginning of the event, and mentor with experienced Rangers at the event.

For more information, visit http://rangers.burningman.com. For even more information, send questions to rangers (at) burningman (dot) com. To get started right away, visit www2.burningman.com/people/ and check the “Rangers” box and answer those questions too.

We’ll see you out there in the dust!”

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR THE CENTER CAMP CAFE STAGES!

Sleepless is the queen of the Center Camp Stages, and she’s looking for help with them thar stages once again this year. This is a great place to volunteer! Says she:

“Stage Managers
Do you like herding cats? Do you like people (most of the time)? Are you punctual and detail oriented? If you answered yes to the above questions, Come and stage manage with us. Work closely with amazing artists and performers of all stripes, plaids and dots! Emailsleepless (at) burningman (dot) com

Gear Gods
Do you like working with and around musicians? Do you have a basic knowledge of sound equipment? Do you know how to plug a mic into a snake is? Can you lift 50 lbs? Do you like to have knowledge other people don’t? If you answered yes to even two of those questions, you should totally email: sleepless (at) burningman (dot) com to volunteer as a Rockstar – I mean, GEAR GOD!

Sound Techs
Come volunteer and geek out on trying to tech the most unusual bands and musicians you are likely to see merge in one place! Center Camp Café Sound and Performance Team is looking for Sound Technicians to volunteer, walk around with pin-like focus and speak in technical terms that no one can understand (minus possibly the stage managers and other technicians) Experience required!!!! sleepless (at) burningman (dot) com

Shifts are 4 hours long with typically six to ten acts per shift. Doing production work on the playa is super fun. The acts range from incredibly talented to the wackiest most insane thing you will ever see … even the bad stuff is usually pretty funny!”

BURNING MAN 2009 CENTER CAMP CAFE – PERFORMANCE STAGE, AERIAL ACTS & SPEAKER SERIES

And here’s yet more from Sleepless, Queen of the Cafe Performance Stages:

“The Cafe is a venue that bursts with a universe of art and unusual creative expression.

A musical stage features participants playing conversation-friendly world and instrumental music during the day; and at night hosts an incredible range of exciting performance — from classical dance to rock, opera to marching bands and funk to psychedelic. A spoken word stage features poetry readings, soap-box rants, comedy, slam poetry and theatrical productions.

1) Are you a live music performer performing original music (no covers please), magician, juggler, comedian, aerialist, MC or performance artist in search of a stage? Well, we have one to offer, and spots are going fast!

We have fabulous volunteers to help schedule your performances.

a. For your spoken word/comedy/storytelling/soap-box stylings:
magenta (at) burningman (dot) com

b. For musical performances:
sleepless (at) burningman (dot) com

c. For aerial performances: (scheduled from 5:30pm-6pm daily)
cafe-performers (at) burningman (dot) com

d. For MCing: (scheduled from 5pm-1am daily in 2-4 hour shifts)
sleepless (at) burningman (dot) com

e. For all other types of performances:
cafe-performance (at) burningman (dot) com

2) Are you an expert on a subject and want to share your BRAIN? (braaaains …)

We will be featuring the Speaker Series, Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30am-12:30pm . Full hour and half hour slots available. Special priority given to subjects relating to this year’s Evolution theme or to subjects of particular interest to a broad spectrum of Burning Man participants. If interested, contact cafe-performers (at) burningman (dot) com

Note that these talks should be educational without endorsing a product or specific group. Whether you speak or not, stop by and eat, I mean, FEED your BRAIN!

Note: We are unable to accommodate fire performances in the Café and all music must be original. Any recorded music used in aerial or stage acts should be license free/performed live.”

MUSICIANS WANTED!

The Seventy Third Lord Smurfington, General Manager of the (most awesome) Grand Hotel at Ashram Galactica, writes to request musicians to perform at their absolutely unbelievable camp. Give him a shout if you’ve got the goods.

“Want more live music on The Playa?

You’re not alone! The Grand Hotel at Ashram Galactica is seeking polished, groovy live music acts to play in our 5-star jazz lounge, The Swaying Palms.

Kindly email TheSwayingPalms (at) yahoo (dot) com with all inquiries, submissions and positive vibes.”

DAYTIME ART CAR TRIP REQUESTED FOR KIDSVILLE

Kether from Kidsville writes:

“We are looking for support from a friendly Burner with an art car that can transport more than 12 kids and parents on our Make a Wish / Grant a Wish Project. We would like to take a 90-minute ride at a pre-determined time (Wednesday or Thursday would be great!) to grant wishes across the playa. We will have specific destinations to go to and we will fill your art car with little fairies (and a few demons, no doubt) who will be delivering wishes of mouthwash, kisses, and whatever other wishes we can grant from our wishing well. It will be really fun!!! If you can help, please contact Kether at:

kether (at) sigilmanagement (dot) com

Thanks so much!”

SUPPPORT THE BLACK ROCK CITY POST OFFICE 2.0

Like mail? Who doesn’t? Blue, from the BRCPO 2.0 writes in seeking assistance for their noble cause of mail delivery to and from Black Rock City (for reals):

“Last year was the first year for the BRCPO 2.0, which fueled both the Tokyo Post Office at 9 o’clock plaza and the testing of the groundbreaking Telegram-To-Playa Art program (allowing default-world situated loved-ones to send and receive short messages transformed to art to and from their favorite Burning Man participant — possibly within hours). This year we want to continue providing these great services to the BRC community, but we need your help — in a few ways:

1. Design the cancellation stamp that will adorn (and officially cancel) mail leaving the Tokyo Post Office at 9 o’clock plaza for the default world! Preference may be given to BM09 theme-oriented designs and/or designs that depict soup (SOUP!). Please send black & white (no color or greyscale) designs to officialstamp (at) brcpostoffice (dot) com by midnight Pacific Time, July 3rd, 2009.

2. Become a Post Office supporter. $25 makes you an official supporter and gets you the awesomest T-shirt ever. We can’t stress enough how awesome these shirts are — that’s an objective opinion. And it’s quite likely wearing the shirt on playa will cause you to receive preferential treatment from posties and non-posties alike. Write Blue at blue (at) brcpostoffice (dot) com for details.

3. The BRCPO 2.0 is looking for: a) on-site performance artist volunteers to deliver mail and staff windows (Not sure if it’s right for you? Send a blank email to lesson01 (at) brcpostoffice (dot) com to enroll in our correspondence course) and b) an artist with DMV-approved art car that can act as mail transport on playa (only day driving needed).

BURNING TAROT ON THE PLAYA

This just in from Miss Magdalen (aka Caution Girl), creator of the Burning Man Tarot deck.

“New Burning Tarot Deck Update:
The new Burning Tarot deck for 2009 is still in progress and will eventually be available for you to download & print, free of course.

Burning Tarot on the Playa:
…will be roving this year. Look for the small sandwich board sign, red and gold, that says — you guessed it — “Burning Tarot.” No appointments or financial donations accepted for your readings. However, miss magdalen of mystical mayhem has been known to give far better readings when plied with whiskey, wine, and fine cheeses. 🙂

Get a Reading, Help Get the Easter Island Project to the Playa:
The Easter Island Project asks participants to make ‘seeds of creation,’ which will be brought to the remote South Pacific isle of Rapa Nui as part of the Easter Island Project. Folks have participated live in NYC, the Bay Area, Portland, Seattle, Arizona, and other places—help transport it to BRC in 2009. Email easterislandproject (at) gmail (dot) com for details.

Help get the Easter Island Project to the Playa in 2009 with the Burning Tarot fundraiser. Gift certificates at http://seedcake.etsy.com or make a non-profit donation at http://www.2gq.org/donate.html Miss Magdalen of the Tarotist Training Camp will give you a genuine, ass-kicking reading in person or over the phone with her original 2003 Burning Tarot deck.”

LA REGIONAL NEWBIE ORIENTATION AND BURNING MAN GEAR SWAP – LA, JUNE 28

We seriously heart this stuff. It’s a great way for people to give a helpful leg-up to the playa virgins (and that’s not meant to be kinky in any way, shape or form) … easing their premiere entry into the Burning Man experience. Y’all pay attention to the LA Regional crew, now. Holla:

“LA Regional Presents:
Newbie Orientation and Burning Man Gear Swap : Hosted by Plaid
Neighborhood: Downtown
Address: Smashlabs @ 1714 Albion St., Los Angeles 90031
When: 06/28/2009 – 2:00pm

Is this your first year going to Burning Man? Is it your second or third year and you need a little refresher? Is it your gah-zillionth year and you want to help some new Burners get their orientation on?

Well HELLO! This is the event for YOU!

We’ll start with a newbie orientation, including such riveting topics as:
1. what’s up with all the goggles and dust masks?
2. nudity on bikes: passe or de rigeur?
3. where do you find water on the playa?
4. where do you dump your trash at the end of the event?
5. what should you pack?
6. where should you camp?

We’ll also give some demos of different types of sleeping arrangements, including:
1. Normal’s car!
2. Plaid’s tent!
3. an RV (maybe, if we can find one)!
4. a cargo van

After the Newbie Orientation, we’ll migrate to the parking lot for a Burning Man gear swap. Bring everything you want to donate or trade:
– camping gear
– costumes
– bikes
– stuff like that

For This Swap in Particular: As I’m sure you’re aware, many people do not find our playa gear as charming as we do. Please make sure you shake out your gear BEFORE the swap. If you have large items (bikes, for example), be prepared to take them home with you if no one claims them. (Also feel free to bring any unwanted clothing items or costumes items for the Kostume Kult or for donation tohttp://www.myfriendsplace.org).

If you’re looking for a ride up there, this might be a good time to start sniffing around for people to carpool with. You could even go post about it on the Forum:
