Now where *did* that packing list go?

As we inch ever closer to the playa, things are heating up around here. The perimeter fence is up around Black Rock City, DPW has moved out onto the playa, the city’s been surveyed, the Cafe is being constructed, and our internet WIFI cloud is even up and running (don’t count on using this, btw … yes, it’s there, but it gets slaughtered during the event). (Which means yes, you can still tell your boss you won’t be checking email. And then, don’t.)

John Curley, you should know, is once again blogging the building of Black Rock City and the adventures of the Department of Public Works in both charming words and gorgeous pictures — and we’re once again VERY glad to have him doing so. Check it out:

http://blog.burningman.com/?cat=31

So yeah, as we edge ever closer to the playa, the Rabbit’s inbox also explodes with post requests from across the Burnosphere (heh, just made that up), and you are hereby the beneficiary of the onslaught. There’s tips and tricks, valuable information, opportunities, activities and events. Even shout outs for piano tuners and librarians. Really, who could ask for more? Seriously, there’s a lot of good stuff in this edition, and we hope it stokes your fires and gets you primed for playa time.

The Man burns in 18 days and Oh My God we’re counting in the teens. Oh boy here we come!

-Will
(Associate Rabbit)

RESPONSE TO THE EFF’S CRITICISM OF BURNING MAN’S PHOTO POLICY

The Electronic Frontier Foundation recently criticized Burning Man’s longstanding photography policy, and our very own Andie Grace has provided a response. The ongoing (and welcomed) dialog is going strong in the blog comments.

Here’s the original EFF critique:

http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2009/08/snatching-rights-playa

And here’s Andie’s response:

BLACK ROCK SOLAR DEDICATES NEW SOLAR ARRAY ATOP SEVENTH ADVENTIST CHURCH

The largest solar array ever installed on a Nevada church was donated by NV Energy and Black Rock Solar, a spinoff of the Burning Man project. Read the article in the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Nice work, BRS!

BURN ON THE BAYOU DOCUMENTARY PREMIERES ON THE DOCUMENTARY CHANNEL

Burn on the Bayou, the documentary that describes the creation of Burners Without Borders as they helped with Hurricane Katrina Relief, premieres August 24th at 9pm on the Documentary Channel. Check your local listings and all that good stuff.

In this trailer, you’ll find not one, but TWO … count ’em … TWO of your faithful Rabbits (the mellifluous voice of the lovely and charming Andie Grace, and the [augh … shudder] visage of yours truly:

CAMP NOT PLACED? GET LISTED IN THE ALTERNATIVE WWW!

A MESSAGE FROM THE BLACK ROCK BEACON: With BRC in 2009 returning to the 2007 footprint, 130 camps were not able to be placed this year, due to the limited space available for registered theme camps.

These camps are now at a disadvantage with no listings in the official What Where When, so we wanted to do something to assist non-placed camps: the Black Rock Beacon, the Playa’s daily independent newspaper, has offered to help in producing an Alternative What Where When for those not listed in the official guide.

The AWWW will be printed on-playa @ The Beacon. It will be open ONLY to camps who are not placed and events that are not listed in the official print WWW. This means if you are a rejected camp, a camp who’s chosen not to be placed, or have decided last minute to hold an event or never thought you could get on-playa promotion because of the lack of address until after land grab – this publication is for you to help get the word out about your thang!

To submit a listing, please email alt.www.bm09 (at) gmail (dot) com before 26 August with your camp / event details. Then simply make sure to head down to PlayaInfo or the Beacon before 6pm Monday 31st to list your camp location, and you’ll be listed in the AWWW with your camp address! We will have distribution of the AWWW in many camps on-Playa from Tuesday, directly from The Beacon, as well as on the Nowhere Omnibus. And a launch for the AWWW, the “Displacement Party”, will be held on Wednesday evening around sundown @ Rathskellar, so you can grab a copy there too.

Donations are welcomed to defray costs of the AWWW, too. These are tax deductible and can be made at:

http://www.blackrockbeacon.org – even $5 or $10 would help!

For more information and discussion, please visit the Tribe:

http://tribes.tribe.net/toohotforburningman.

WE MESSED UP: MEDICAL MARIJUANA *IS* LEGAL IN NEVADA … BUT NOT AT BURNING MAN

In the Law Enforcement Edition of the JRS, we mistakenly reported (and our intrepid readers duly corrected us) that medical marijuana is not legal in Nevada. And lo and behold, it is. See?

http://www.safeaccessnow.org/article.php?id=2046
http://www.leg.state.nv.us/nac/nac-453a.html

HowEVER, Burning Man takes place on Federal land, and as you probably know, the Federal government’s position on medical marijuana … yeah, not so much.

OK, that said, if you’re traveling through Nevada, but outside our event, we are told by one participant: “Nevada does not offer reciprocity for medical marijuana users. For non-Nevada residents, it’s important to note that another state’s medical marijuana card (that e.g. would prevent your arrest in California) does not prevent your arrest in Nevada.”

So, there you go.

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

OH AND WE MESSED UP THE BIKES EDITION TOO, APPARENTLY

Tata writes to correct us:

“Just an FYI for other Burners, regarding bike recycling, the Save Mart store listed on 565 East Prater Way in Sparks has a wrong telephone number. The correct number is 359-9060.

Also, when I called, they confirmed they WILL have the Black Rock bikes again this year (they aren’t listed as one of the Save Mart stores selling these bikes in the ‘Bikes’ newsletter).

Hopes this helps at least one other Burner…”

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

MARK (OR COVER) YOUR REBAR AND GUY WIRES IDEA

Ret Marut sez:

“Any chance we could send a reminder to folks to be careful with their rebar & please tie ribbons to your guy wires? Last year I was behind our camp, tripped on an unmarked wire, then scraped my leg really bad on the rebar it was attached to. (It was sticking up about a foot high, with nothing to prevent someone impaling themselves.) The worst part was that I landed hard on my chest & injured my shoulder, which I’ve spent the last year getting fixed at the chiropractor, massage therapists & getting acupuncture.

I was looking for the wires, knowing they were there, but I just couldn’t see ’em in the dark. I’m sure a whole lot worse could easily happen if folks aren’t careful.”

And we say: rebar can be covered with tennis balls, empty soda cans, empty plastic bottles, or even (our favorite) impaled stuffed animals.

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

RECOVER A LOST CAMERA IDEA

Biff writes:

“Tip to help recover a lost camera: Take a sheet of paper and write contact information on it with a marking pen. I put my first name, city, state and an email address. Then, take a picture of it using a blank memory card, so it will be the first picture displayed on the camera.”

Brilliant!

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

BIKE IDEAS AND STUFF

Here’s a small collection of bike ideas and stuff that came in since our Bikes JRS went out. Yay helpful people!

—————–

AirMan writes: “Ride your bike on the right of the street. Stop at intersections, when the need be and yield to the bike on the right. Just like driving a car. Yield to all pedestrians.”

—————–

Then there was this little exchange …

Dear Jack Rabbit, Howza bout including some info on the best methods for cleaning your bike after Burning Man in the next JR Speaks. We all know that playa dust ain’t good for a bike. I for one know nothing about how best to clean that dust out of them thar oily sprockets. Some advice would be greatly appreciated, lest my bike be doomed to the junk heap. Clueless in the saddle. (bike saddle that is), Dick Chowder

Dear Clueless, First off, please tell me Dick Chowder is your real name? OK, in short, clean the hell out of your bike. Using a little vinegar or lime juice dissolved in water will break down the alkalai dust, then clean it again as you normally would. Disassemble and reasssemble all your components that you care to clean well, and once clean and dry, grease ’em up, and put them back together. Better yet, be lazy like I am … bring it to a mechanic and back sloooowly away.

—————-

Finally, ChiChi writes in with this great list:

“Bringing a bike to the playa? Your friends at Pandora’s Fix-It Shoppe & Lounge (providers of DIY fix-it space for bikes, costumes, mohawks and the occasional nuclear reactor core) would like to remind you of some essential items that no biking burner should be caught dead on the playa without.

1) A spare tube (or two) – most hybrid and mountain bikes use a 26″ tube. Your tires should have their tube size printed on the side. IF YOU CAN’T READ IT, GET A NEW DAMN TIRE.
2) A tube patch kit – they cost less than the change you have in your couch and are worth their weight in gold.
3) A bike lock – of course no one steals bikes at Burning Man; they just get borrowed forever.
4) Reflectors & blinkies – the only thing worse than a darkwad is a really fast darkwad.

Also, if you’re dumb enough to bring a fancy-schmancy bike with goofy non-standard valve stems, you’d better bring your own air pump, too. And if all this seems like too much trouble, the good people at blackrockbicycles.com will rent you a bike with everything you need.

Finally, regardless of how and where you get your bike, do yourself a tremendous favor and RIDE IT AROUND THE BLOCK ONCE OR TWICE BEFORE YOU GET TO THE PLAYA. If there’s anything wrong, better to fix it at home.

That’s it. Remember: go fast, take chances!

PS – Wanna help fix stuff? Pandora’s camp has a few camp slots available – see our website for more info:

http://sites.google.com/site/pandorascamp/ and email jim.”

RANDOM IDEAS: PISS BOTTLE & TENT STAKES (NOT RELATED THINGS!)

Robert writes in to suggest these helpful ideas:

“Plastic Piss Clear Containers: Wide-mouth liquid detergent bottles come in two types. One has the threads to which the lid screws on embedded in the no-drip pour spout. Remove the no-drip pour spout and you can’t put the lid on. In the other kind, the no-drip spout is internal. The threads are on the bottle. You can remove the no-drip spout (pull), and still tightly screw on the lid. You guys now have a big, no-excuses hole to piss clear into and, you gals, perhaps one big enough to use with a pee funnel. Its a good idea to write Piss Clear all over the container.

Deck Hold-down Screws Make Excellent Tent Posts: They are a long (8 to 15 inches), usually galvanized, iron rod, about 3/4 of an inch thick, with a 1-2 inch head bent over 90 degrees. Usually there are only a few inches of thread cut in the squared-off end of the rod. They can be pounded in all the way to the head, leaving nothing to trip over, but also little to remind you to remove it once the guy lines are off. Pulling the guy lines will easily slip this ‘tent peg’ out of the ground. Have used them for three years and never has a guy line slipped off.

The one foot size works well. No need to put a point on them – a mall drives the flat end into the playa easily. Cost is under a dollar each. They rust, but otherwise are indestructible. Building supply stores carry them.”

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

GERLACH CAR WASH

Ranger Keeper reminds us:

“Wanted to remind folks out there that when the dust has settled and it’s time to roll home, they can stop off at the ***Gerlach Car Wash*** and drive home in decadence!

The Car Wash will be open on Sunday and Monday from 8 AM – 6 PM. We use the Post Office parking lot, visible from the drive through town.

Cost is $10 per car, and $25 per RV.

Proceeds go to benefit the Gerlach Schools student body, supporting them in all kinds of extra curricular activites (sports, field trips, the arts, etc.) throughout the school year.

Thanks for giving back to this local community… they need our support!”

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

PLEASE RETURN MARKED STUFF

This was such … well … at once a thoughtful and yet ingeniously self-serving request that we couldn’t resist publishing it. It’s awesome. We really hope Frankie gets his drum back:

“Can you please remind people to try to contact the owner of a found item if it has a name and phone number on it; even if they have had it in their possession from a Burning Man event from years ago.

Example: Lost Drum at Burning Man 2008: Multi-colored orange Remo djembe standing approx. 25″ tall, 14″ wide, w/ ‘Frankie (707) XXX-XXXX’ written on the head.”

(If you have the drum, you’ll have the phone number.)

BLACK ROCK CENSUS NOW RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS

The Black Rock Census is now recruiting volunteers for on-playa shifts! If you think you might be interested in volunteering with the Census, read on for more details.

During the week, we need two volunteers for each morning shift (8 am -2 pm) and two volunteers for each afternoon shift (3 pm -9 pm). More details about the shifts are below. Caution: Tea parties may occur from 2-3 as the shift changes!

We would STRONGLY prefer that you sign up to work at least two shifts during the week, because the shifts involve some training and a slight learning curve. However, if you can only manage one shift we should be able to find time for you. It is fine to request a shift with a friend, or to sign up yourself to meet a new friend!.

Please email Lovechild (alana11 (at) stanford (dot) edu) with your availability and/or preferred or preferred shifts (as in, specific days you’re available or not, and whether you prefer morning or afternoon). We’re looking to fill shifts from Monday the 31th though the morning of Tuesday the 8th (excluding Saturday).

If you can’t commit to a shift right now, please let us know if you’re still interested in helping out on the fly and we can work out a time for you to stop by and fill in whatever holes in the schedule might crop up on the playa.

Cafe Census Volunteers: Job Description

Shifts: Two 6-hour shifts per day (morning and evening)
Location: Urban—Center Camp

Involves: food and drink, shade, minimum contact with strangers, abuse from the Countess herself

Description: Center Camp shifts entail
—restocking the Cafe and Playa Info kiosks
—retrieving completed census forms from the Cafe
—processing forms (placing numbered stickers on collected forms and properly grouping them) in the Confidentiality Room, adjacent to Media Mecca and across the street from the Cafe.

Perfect for: Those who love organization and efficiency, or who need some compulsions to balance their obsessions on the playa often particularly enjoy stacking, counting, numbering, and bunching forms.

EARTH GUARDIANS NATURE WALKS TENTH ANNIVERSARY

In honor of our Tenth anniversary and a desire to step up a very popular event – this year we’re having 5 nature walks, with one focused on restoration! So…

Calling naturalists!
Calling large vehicle owners!

The Earth Guardians have been leading nature walks from Burning Man to points around the playa for 10 years. For 2009 we are Evolving with more trips and more opportunities for participation.

*Nature Walk Leaders:
We’re looking for naturalists, natural scientists and desert experts who want to share their knowledge with fellow burners. Come identify birds, plants, rocks, tracks and whatever else we find. Teach us about the fascinating human and natural history of the high desert. Lead a small group exploring, and experiencing the wonders of nature.

*Ecological Restoration Team Leaders:
On Thursday morning the Earth Guardians are teaming up with the Friends of Black Rock to repair vehicle damage to Dunes on the Playa. If you have experience leading teams doing restoration or trail work, we’d love to have you work with us!

*Nature Walk Vehicles
Most of our nature walks fill up fast, and we hate turning people away. This year we’re looking for multi-passenger vehicles to help carry our friends outside the fence.

To volunteer or get more information, contact Matthew at:

wuzzupmatthewsykes (at) gmail (dot) com

There will be an orientation meeting on Tuesday at 4 pm at the Earth Guardians Pavilion.

If you would like to go on one of the nature walks, sign up at Earth Guardians Pavilion in Black Rock City (sorry, no pre-playa registration).

EDUPLAYTATIONAL OASIS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS – SUPPORT A GHANAN VILLAGE!

The Eduplaytional Oasis is a Burners Without Borders Project created by Jamie Luv. Information on the BWB website here:

http://bit.ly/ZiFU8

The Eduplaytional Oasis is an inspirational 32ft dome (donated by Ed Falk) that will go to Ghana, Africa after the burn to become a SCHOOL! The first building in the Eduplaytional Volunteer Village of YARO (Youth Action on Reproductive Order.http://www.yaroghana.com) a small non-religious, non-profit NGO run entirely by local volunteers who are empowering their communities to rise above the cycle of poverty through education.

The EO will ask Burners “What can you do, with what you have learned at Burning Man, that you can use to make a meaningful difference in the world?” and will include an inspirational storybook, labyrinth and an opportunity to contribute to the Eduplaytional Idea Book.

I am not a camp, I don’t have a team, a co-lead or a committee. I am one woman devotedly driving this whole project, and it can only happen with your help! I humbly bow to all those that have contributed funds, assistance, and energy so far. This project has amazing energy … Thank you! Come be part of this amazing project! Make your playa contribution bigger than just Burning Man!

Eduplaytional Oasis needs the following committed volunteers on playa!

Early Arrival- Help unpack the container that the dome is currently in. Saturday Noon. (I don’t currently have EA passes, seeking a few hours of help from people that know they will be up there already. I have to unpack a 26 foot container to get to the dome…in the back. PLEASE HELP!) Build the Dome- Tuesday 9AM (approx 5 hours. The dome builder will be present, I will lovingly organize, there will be beer, snacks and love 🙂 Supervise the Dome- The dome will have an internal misting system inside and will be a comfortable 80 degrees all day. Get these shifts while they are cool 😉 Tuesday PM-Sunday AM. 4 hour shift. 10AM-2PM or 2PM-6PM. Strike the Dome- Sunday 2 PM, (there will be snacks, libations, love, love and more LUV! BEST STRIKE EVER!!!)

I am fundraising to get the dome to Ghana, by hauling stuff in a truck to the playa. If you or your camp need things to get to the playa, and you don’t have a way yet, please contact me so that I can haul your stuff from San Francisco and help you, help me, help Ghanaian school children have a school!

Donations to the project are also needed! (Got tarps, blacklight paint, clothespins, a laminator or CASH? I need it!)

You will find the Eduplaytional Oasis at Sacred Spaces Camp at 5:00 and Esplanade.

Many Happy Thoughts

CALLING ALL FURRIES! CALLING ALL RABBITS! CALLING ALL HARES!

Join ANIMUS, Disorient, and The Billion Bunny March on Thursday evening (Sept 3rd) for an extraordinary journey. The sojourn begins with the traditional Billion Bunny March at 7pm. There will be cocktails and Bunnification from 5-7pm at BMIR at Center Camp, followed by the “march against humanity” to the Man. This year however there is a SPECIAL SURPRISE and from the Man we are leading all the rabbits directly to: THE BUDDHA BUNNY.

The Buddha Bunny (ANIMUS) is a 21 foot tall meditating rabbit, sitting in full-lotus position, just past the man. The project explores the nature of personal or spiritual evolution, and running up the bunny will be light sources corresponding to the chakras of the body. As the week evolves the rabbit will spiritually evolve, and each night a new chakra will light up until the final chakra is lit on Thursday at sundown, at which point The Buddha Bunny becomes “enLIGHTened”. This “enlightenment” literally sets off a whole series of mind-blowing lighting effects that are set to original music, performance, and other high theatrics. In fact, all the lighting effects of The Buddha Bunny are controllable by the participants of the Billion Bunny March.

Then stick around after the enlightenment for more cocktails, snacks, and BIG SOUND from Disorient, as some of the country’s top DJs hit the DEX, and we dance into the night. Please keep in mind that the whole journey goes from day (hot) into night (cold) so that the lighting effects can be fully appreciated. Please plan accordingly with dress, food, and water.

The Buddha Bunny is a non-honorarium project, funded by individuals sponsoring “squares” of the bunny’s quilt-like skin. For more information, or to help support the project, visit

THE NOWHERE OMNIBUS INTERACTIVE BUS SERVICE

the Nowhere Omnibus writes: You may have heard of our little endeavour to bring to bring public transport, orderliness, queuing and all round rude health to the Playa this year in the shape of The Nowhere Omnibus.

The Nowhere Omnibus is simultaneously a piece of interactive art and a public transport infrastructure for Black Rock City, providing a regular, reliable, timetabled route around the playa, to the Man and the Temple every day of Burning Man. It will take the form of a red, double-decker London Routemaster bus, complete with bus stops around the Esplanade. Not only will this be a scheduled public transport system but onboard we will have an assortment of British Stereotypes to amuse and engage the traveling public. Seven modified London Transport bus stops, with route maps and timetables, will be placed on The Esplanade at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 ‘o’clock and at The Man.

An art grant from Burning Man takes us part of the way, but in order to make this dream a reality, we depend upon your generosity in terms of donations. Find out more about how you can contribute.

We’re still open to volunteers, particularly those with engineering / mechanic abilities (just in case!) as well as people to get involved with the Leave No Trace aspect of our project.

QUIXOTE’S CABARET CLUB AND BAR SEEKING TALENT

Have you got a talent that the playa needs to see? Can you perform magic tricks? Stand-up comedy? Sing? Dance? Do something obscene with a folding chair, two pieces of rebar and a dust mask? Then Quixote’s Cabaret Club and Bar needs you!

Quixote’s is a European cabaret collective and our gift to the Playa is The Man and Monkey Pub, complete with cabaret stage – you bring the talent and we’ll bring the boards to tread, the roar of the greasepaint and the smell of the crowd.

We’re looking for anything that could be considered a cabaret act, and we don’t mind if it’s your first time on stage or you’re a seasoned performer – if you can entertain our crowds, then we’d love to put you in the spotlight.

Contact momma.quixote (at) googlemail (dot) com for details.

CAR DECONSTRUCTION ART+REVOLUTION PROCESS

Seeking TENT or DOME structure… and seeking YOU…

Drake’s Deconstruction & Paradigm Wreckers Service wants YOU!

INVITATION: We are pulling off a feat of human + lo-fi mechanical logistics this year: the complete dismantling of one ordinary, despicable, fossil fuel-burning p.o.s. car, in a symbolic interactive process – to which YOU are invited for maximum participation! Come help provoke a paradigm shift toward what we already know we need as a species – to get off the oil sauce, for good.

And when we say complete dismantling, we mean BY HAND, by each one of us, guided only by the inspiration of spontaneous participation. We are a lo-fi – monkey-wrenching – night-working – under-consuming camp.

SEEKING: We have recently expanded our vision, and thus are seeking a new structural element for our camp—so we are calling on the community, hoping some kind-hearted burner might lend/sell us a sturdy large TENT or DOME, to shade what is now a five-day process… and one which we hope will add a lively, evolutionarily relevant process to the Playa community this year. We’re looking for something between 20 and 30 feet; we have side-covering materials so don’t need a full cover necessarily. We realize its getting close to all of our arrival times, so much respect to you who are willing to consider loans or sales, to help us grow into our vision.

Read our Phase I event posting at: http://playaevents.burningman.com/brc/2009/playa_events/1/ and also look for our Decon–>Recon Transition Ritual, Tuesday Night, and Phase II from Wednesday onward >>

Please WRITE us! If you’d like to just make contact, rant, or see how to be further involved. We look forward to hearing from you, and to burning with you…

CALLING ALL ARTISTS AND FREEDOM-LOVERS TO EPHEMERISLE! – OCTOBER 2-4

Imagine a small Burning Man event that takes place on the water. That’s pretty much what Ephemerisle sounds like it’s shaping up to be. Now, this has nothing *officially* to do with Burning Man. But UNofficially, the organizers certainly are employing and applying Burning Man’s Ten Principles, and doing so in spades. Great idea! Check it out:

“Ephemerisle will be the first-ever floating festival of politics, community, and art that will be held October 2-4 on California’s Sacramento River Delta.

People will bring their crafts and their ideas to build an eclectic temporary village of boats, rafts, barges, junks, and other floating structures. A large central platform will be provided as a common space to come together. We’ll have music, dance, open mic performances, classes on how to build your own floating platform… and on Saturday night, a community feast to begin the evening’s festivities.

But this is just the beginning: This will not be a spectator event, though there will be plenty to see. As on the playa, participants will bring their own art, activities, ideas, and love of community and freedom. YOU will define what Ephemerisle turns out to be.

A grant program is also available to help participants offset the costs of floating platforms, boats, or thematic art.

For more information, visit http://www.ephemerisle.org. Questions can be directed to ephemerisle@seasteading.org”
