Oh. My. God. Did that really just happen? That was … so … incredible.

So yeah, we’re hearing from far and wide that this was people’s best Burn yet, and while we’re well aware that there are as many perspectives as there are participants, we’re inclined to agree. Things went exceptionally smoothly; the art and vehicles were varied, interesting and creative; the community vibe felt cohesive and strong; there was some bitchin’ fire; the weather was generally pleasant, while reminding us who’s boss now and again; and thank goodness for the return to the old city size (right?)!

Yep, overall, a GREAT Burn week. And there are two main groups to whom we’d like to extend our heartfelt appreciation:

First off, the intrepid, hardworking members of the DPW who have been on playa for more than six weeks now setting up the essential infrastructure of Black Rock City, and who will remain there for another month. Now they’re GPSing the good the bad and the ugly and coloring the MOOP Map green for those of you who cleaned up, and red where some of you didn’t do so hot. These are the true heroes of Burning Man, people.

Then, there’s YOU, dear participant. Thank YOU for being so amazing. You brought your creativity, your passion, your dedication, and your insurmountable spirit to an empty, dry, featureless lakebed, and through the sheer power of your will to BE and DO, you manifested the most incredible city on the planet and in it the irreproducible magic that is Burning Man. Just … wow.

Now, as rough as it can be, we hope your re-entry into the real world is going as smoothly as it reasonably *can*, all things considered. Yeah, undoubtedly, you’re sitting there amongst your friends, family and co-workers, with your mouth agape, your mind aswim with the sound and fury, and flashbacks of people, art, fire, and the limitless expanse of the playa’s horizon. And yeah, we know … it’s strongest when you get a whiff of the playa dust permeating all your possessions, and personal nooks and crannies.

Well, if you want to stay connected, hit up an upcoming Decompression event near you (SF’s is October 11 … see below), read up on next year’s art theme (Metropolis: The Life of Cities), and check out (and contribute to!) the great posts and comment threads happening on the Burning Blog:

So yeah, whaddya say we do it again next year, huh? The Man burns in 355 days.

2010 ART THEME: METROPOLIS

Minutes after the Man met his firey demise, the art theme for 2010 was published on the Burning Man website (we’re crafty like that). The theme for this coming year is “Metropolis: The Life of Cities.”

This theme is particularly befitting Burning Man, since we are in the unique position (one could say it’s an urban planner’s wet dream) to be able to create and dismantle a thriving metropolis every year, and to make adjustments that will cultivate community and culture, while supporting essential civic services.

Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey comes up with the art theme every year as one of his contributions to the event, and he painstakingly crafts the theme text, providing a larger context. Here is this year’s theme text:

And for a little more background about HOW and WHY Black Rock City has been designed, and how it’s evolved over the years, read this fascinating article by our City Designer, Rod Garrett:

You might also enjoy his explanation of the impetus for, and design of the Center Camp Cafe structure, Black Rock City’s main community gathering space:

Finally, Time Magazine interviewed Larry this year, discussing 5 Things Cities Can Learn from Burning Man. It’s a nice piece of video, with some great footage of this year’s event. Check it out:

FEEDBACK LOOP: TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!

Give us specific feedback about your Burning Man experience to factor into our planning for 2010! The staff reads EVERYTHING that gets sent in, and your feedback becomes a part of our annual staff retreat process. We respond directly to things that warrant a personal reply, and/but things that have a lot of comments get addressed in the Q&A section of the annual Afterburn Report.

So, email your comments, thoughts and ideas to:

feedback (at) burningman (dot) com

We’ll be closing up the formal Feedback Loop process around the beginning of October, so hop to it!

LAW ENFORCEMENT FEEDBACK

Did you have or witness an encounter with law enforcement on the playa? Whether it was positive or negative, we want to know about it. We use this information to work yearround with law enforcement officers to improve our relations, improve their interactions with our community, and to ensure your constitutional and civil rights are being protected while in Black Rock City. And we can’t be successful in that effort if we don’t have your stories.

So please, take a moment to download, fill out and mail us a Law Enforcement Feedback Form (PDF), here:

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

LAWYERS FOR BURNERS

If you got arrested or received a citation on playa, don’t feel like you’re in it alone. A grassroots, volunteer organization called Lawyers For Burners may be able to help you out with finding a lawyer and/or legal advice. Visit their website for more information:

http://www.lawyersforburners.com

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

LOST AND FOUND

Did you lose something on playa? Find something? Post it on our Lost & Found board on the ePlaya, and let the reuniting of people and stuff begin! Why, here it is now:

THE TRUTH ABOUT BURNING MAN

Jay Michaelson, columnist for the Forward, professor, and author of three books, wrote a great article about Burning Man for the Huffington Post, entitled “The Truth About Burning Man” (so very daring!), and we thought we’d share:

SO … HOW WAS YOUR BURN?

While your friends who didn’t go might glaze over as you blather endlessly on, we’d LOVE to hear how your Burn went … after all, the nucleus of Burning Man culture is a shared consciousness fed by the energy of the personal stories rapidly orbiting our community. So g’head … share your stories, thoughts and feelings with your fellow participants.

One of the best places to do so is in the comments section of the Burning Blog, the premiere source for intelligent articles about Burning Man culture from a variety of published authors, bloggers and thinkers. Right now, we’ve got John Curley uploading some of his best images from 2009 for you to reflect on, and share your personal perspectives.

Here’s one now, about Exodus: http://blog.burningman.com/?p=5488

And one about sharing your Most Exquisite Moment: http://blog.burningman.com/?p=5613

ITALIAN BURNING WEEKEND 2009 – ROME, ITALY, OCTOBER 9-11

Yes, there are Burners in Italy. And you just KNOW they rock … very … hard. If you’re anywhwere in the vicinity, or can manage to get there, you REALLY have to ask yourself: why wouldn’t you? Seriously. Here’s what Matteo and Dario have to say:

“Join the Italian burners from Friday October 9th to Sunday 11th for a Burning Weekend played around the 10 principles mixed with the Italian hosting culture! The location is a wild Italian country house 1 hour north from Rome, we will arrange camping space so bring your tent, your furry coats and your love!

We need artists, dj’s, cooks, dish washers, carpenters, engineers but most of anything we need burners. We are open to any interesting project you are willing to suggest and coordinate. All the info on:
