Well, we’re creeping right up here on the midway point between Burns … the Burnal Equinox. We’re throwing a big celebration here in San Francisco on March 6 (deets below), and we’re hoping you’ll be throwing your own special celebration where you live, marking the crest of the hill, down from which lies the expanse of the playa and the exit to Black Rock City.

Speaking of playa-bound, it’s time to register your playa project! We got info below, and links to the various troves of web-a-fied information, guidelines, suggestions and more that will facilitate your dreams of playa participation! Or something.

Meanwhile, our Art Grant Committee is busy poring over the 266 grant applications that came in this year, promising some amazing playa art for 2010 … we’ve got models and maquettes sprinkled around the Burning Man office, and everybody’s getting excited about what’s to come. It’s kinda like working in a miniature representation of the playa, with tiny-scale art tickling our eyes as we pass it on our way to meetings…it’s really coming soon now, friends — the Man burns in 187 days!!

We hope this finds you well and warm … keep those homefires burning!

And now … onward …

PROJECT REGISTRATION QUESTIONNAIRES NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Are you building an art installation for Burning Man this year? How about a Mutant Vehicle? Doing a theme camp? Or maybe you have a clever media project up your sleeve. If so, it’s time to register your project with us. Like as in now. Not the later part of now … right now.

First, read up on what it takes to successfully create and register your project:

Art Installations: http://burningman.com/installations Theme Camps: http://burningman.com/themecamps Mutant Vehicles: http://burningman.com/on_the_playa/playa_vehicles/ Media: http://burningman.com/press (note: section update for 2010 pending mid-March; contact press (at) Burningman (dot) com to gain information about pre-registration)

RAT’S BIKES NOW TAKING ORDERS FROM LONG-DISTANCE BURNERS FOR PLAYA BIKES

“Rat’s bikes for long-distance Burners is open for reservations. If you live 1,000 miles or more from Reno, and you need a bike for the 2010 Burn, please give me a shout at nv_desert_rat(at)nvbell(dot)net. There’s a few changes this year–including my return to the playa- so give me a shout and I’ll send all the latest. I have over 200 bikes so I don’t expect to run out very soon, but please don’t wait too long! Thanks!

Rat”

nv_desert_rat (at) nvbell (dot) net

JRS reminds you: please contact da Rat directly – he’s a whole state away and this is his personal project. We do know he requires that you be able to show you’re coming from 1K away, and that you’d better act quickly, because he’s usually sending us word that the bikes are gone by late spring, if our memory serves. Hop to!

RECYCLING PROPANE CANISTERS IN SF

Jannypan writes to let us know:

“Always wondered what to do with those empty propane canisters after every camping trip? In San Francisco, you can recycle them! Just noticed on the Cole Hardware website: ‘Propane Canister Recycling

San Francisco is fortunate to have such a vibrant Department of Environment, often paving the way for other cities across the nation with their groundbreaking recycling programs, guiding the City to a zero waste diversion goal. We’ve been happy to participate in the recycling of batteries, fluorescent bulbs and paint set up by our friends at the City, and we’re thrilled to announce that we will be adding empty propane cylinder recycling to our growing list of recycled products. I’m happy and proud, and you should be, too. This is yet another first in the nation! You can now bring empty propane cylinders to any of our stores.'”

And to this we say: cool!

FREEZING YOUR BURN OFF: FREEZING MAN IN ANTARCTICA

Our good friend Laura “Smartypants” Casey wrote in to let us know about her friend Sully’s “Freezing Man” burn event down at McMurdo Station in Antarctica (and no, that’s not a typo). Pretty cool stuff (har har, oh god shoot me now)! Now in its second year, we hear…check out Sully’s blog:

Thanks Laura!

AMAZING LAND ART ON THE PLAYA

This falls into the Holy Frackin’ Sheet department. Our friend George Post writes to let us know that the largest artwork in history is now available for online viewing:

“The ‘land art’ drawing that Jim Denevan did is now online and public.

Feel free to share the link with anyone who might be interested, on the ‘News’ tab there is a zoomify of the image that was stitched together (about a hundred aerial images) and on the ‘Earth’ tab you can find an early stage version of the composite, and on the ‘Press’ tab is a video ‘Brochure’ of the drawing as well. The drawing is 9 miles in diameter.

PARTICIPATE IN THE 2010 FEED THE ARTISTS PROGRAM!

The Feed the Artists program is a grassroots participant-based effort which connects participating theme camps willing to host dinners to provide hot meals for hard-working Burning Man artists as they work to build art onsite before the event.

This program, founded by participants in 2009, is a great example of how Black Rock City’s citizens step up, organically, to co-contribute to their desert city by supporting each other through gifts — and, it’s a way for those to whom food is an *art* to contribute to the “art gallery” of Burning Man. The program’s Colonel Angus writes in to report on the program for 2010:

“I’m happy to report that planning for FtA 2010 is well underway. Of course, our primary concern at this point is funding. This year, more than ever, we need to invest in certain key aspects of the program that will insure the program’s future self-sufficiency. If we can raise the funds we need this year, FtA will continue to be a substantial part of the Burning Man experience for many years to come. Also, each year we are approached by theme camps who are interested in hosting FtA, and while we have been blessed to have been hosted by two excellent theme camps in the past, Ashram Galactica and Entheon Village, we always like to entertain the idea of spreading the magic around, and getting to work with and know new groups of people. There are many benefits to hosting the FtA program, but there are also some requirements, including a financial contribution and the ability to have complete kitchen and dining facilities up and running by Tuesday of setup week (which requires early access permits and planning ahead).

If there are other theme camps out there that are interested in hosting FtA for 2010, we’d like to speak with them ASAP, because we will make our final decision soon. NOTE: Any Theme Camps that are planning on hosting their own FtA dinners in 2010 should be sure to mention that in their Placement Questionnaire. And finally, this year, our beloved Chef JP has decided to take a year off from Burning Man, so we are looking for a Playa Chef Extraordinaire to head up the FtA kitchen. If there are any Chefs out there with experience serving gourmet food to large groups (including planning, development, food budgeting and ordering expertise), who are interested in joining FtA, we would love to hear from them. Please contact me at:

SHAKESPEARE ON THE PLAYA

Hark! This doth sound rad:

“Be part of Burning Man History and join other visionaries in conjuring the Tempest this year at Burning Man. No audition necessary at this point. Please just e-mail me a headshot or photo, a resume or list of acting you’ve done, and which part you’re interested in playing by March 26th. The committment is currently for 4 shows during Burning Man, and rehearsals begin on Shakespeare’s Birthday April 26th. I really look forward to hearing from you. Burn On!

NOWHERE TICKETS ON SALE

Lady Belle writes:

“It’s time!

Nowhere, Burning Man’s European spin-off, may seem many moons away but work is well and truly underway and we’re delighted to announce that Nowhere tickets are now on sale!

Simply go to http://www.goingnowhere.org/tickets and you’ll be the proud owner of your very own little piece of dusty heaven…

As ever, we encourage you to buy at the highest level you can afford, as Nowhere is not for profit and run entirely by volunteers, and buying at the highest level you can afford means we can put more money towards our arts grants. And if you’re buying tickets for friends, please make sure they’re registered on our mailing lists http://www.goingnowhere.org/contact as well…

With much love and dust,

Lady Belle

WALDEMAR HORWATT’S 2009 BURNING MAN GALLERY

Waldemar, one of the playa’s best photographers, sure did go through it last fall, and we’re VERY VERY glad to hear you’re doing well, my friend! Here’s his (as usual) outstanding gallery of photos from Burning Man 2009:

“After being delayed by five serious eye surgeries (almost went blind this fall but got vision fully restored), I finally finished putting together my 2009 Burning Man photos. Here they are, on a mirror site that I hope can take the load of a lot of Burners accessing simultaneously:
