Burning Man’s Art Theme for 2010 is “Metropolis – The Life of Cities.” In the his original theme text (http://bit.ly/2cXiOz), Burning Man Director Larry Harvey states his intention to “convene a dialogue between participants and planners, [using] Burning Man’s website and the Burning Blog to explore the history of Black Rock City, telling stories that explain the hundreds of decisions that have formed our modern-day metropolis.

As part of this discussion, we’ll solicit public comment. It is our goal to form a feedback loop, a detailed discourse with participants that culminates in public meetings on the playa. Who is better qualified than our committed citizens to analyze what really happens in the streets?”

Well, as Larry promised, we’ve just launched a new blog series on the Burning Blog called Metropol … learn about it below, share it with your friends, and please, PARTICIPATE!

INTRODUCING THE METROPOL BLOG SERIES

We’re proud to announce the launching of our new “Metropol” blog series, which features a collection of articles that look through the lens of Black Rock City to explore urban design, urban planning and the effect they have on culture and community, both at Burning Man and in the real world.

http://blog.burningman.com/metropol

Metropol will feature a variety of authors, offering a diversity of perspectives. We’ll have long-time Burning Man staffers describing the history of Black Rock City’s infrastructure, the things that impacted it, and the thinking that’s gone into making it what we know today. We’ve also invited professional urban planners to bring their urban design expertise to describe what they see developing in the Petri dish that is Black Rock City. We’ll have theme camp organizers discussing the microcosm of camp and village design, and artists exploring the impact of interactive art on a city’s population.

Have you ever been curious about questions like these?

– Why is the city round?
– Why is it horseshoe-shaped?
– Why can you see the Man from every radial street?
– Why does Burning Man sell coffee?
– How does the DMV work?
– What can real-world urban centers learn from Black Rock City?

Most importantly, we invite YOU to join the discussion. We encourage you to contribute your thoughts, ideas, criticisms, concerns, and questions in the blog comments, and engage in an ongoing dialog about these topics.

CALLING ALL TECHNO-GEEKS: PLAYA WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT – MAY 13

Are you an artist, camp and/or geek who brings wireless/internet technology to the playa?

If you are planning a large-scale technological project, have an art project that absolutely requires Internet connectivity, or will be beaming any sort of frequencies from 900MHz to 5.8GHz into the airwaves above the playa, you are cordially invited and strongly requested to participate in the fourth Playa Wireless Summit hosted by the Burning Man Technology Department.

The summit is held in San Francisco at Burning Man HQ (but of course you can participate remotely — we’re geeks) at 7 pm on May 13, 2009. If you’re not in the area, and would still like to participate please write to us for info on how to dial in.

PLEASE RSVP and get more info by emailing playatech (at) burningman (dot) com

It would be great if you could give us a few details on your project in your email.

Thank you from the Burning Man Tech Team.

6TH ANNUAL BLACK ROCK RENDEZVOUS – BLACK ROCK DESERT – MAY 29-30

The Friends of Black Rock High Rock presents the 6th Annual Black Rock Rendezvous on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 29th and Sunday, May 30th, in the Black Rock Desert about 15 miles north of Gerlach, Nevada. The event combines education about the region’s rich history with a selection of tours, kids activities, competitions, and entertainment. Participants must come prepared for leave-no-trace camping and provide for their own survival in the High Desert, including shelter, appropriate clothing and sunscreen, most meals, and ample water. This also marks the 10th Anniversary of the Black Rock Desert – High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, part of the new National Landscape Conservation System within the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

On Saturday, a host of experts from the BLM, Desert Research Institute, and others will lecture on subjects ranging from history and science to art and poetry in the West. There will be a potluck dinner and Dutch oven cooking competition with prizes, and a chance to win tickets to Burning Man or other great prizes in our raffle. A mellow evening is completed with a keynote address from renowned Nevada photographer and writer Peter Goin, a special movie screening, and amateur stargazing.

On Sunday, the activities include: one of four tour opportunities to visit hot springs, ancient petroglyphs, Emigrant Trails, or High Rock Canyon, or you may choose to go it alone on a self-guided geocache treasure hunt. More active individuals may join Friends of Nevada Wilderness on a volunteer restoration project, or compete to win prizes in the 1st Annual Sulphur to Black Rock Bicycle Race, sponsored by Great Basin Brewing Company. Later, the Friends of Black Rock High Rock will hold their annual member meeting, with an election of board members and presentation of the 2009 Annual Report. Kids Camp activities all weekend are provided by Nevada Outdoor School with an emphasis on responsible stewardship, and amateur rocket launches will be scheduled on both days, with some special night launches. The event winds up with an optional barbeque dinner from Gordon’s Barbeque, cowboy poetry from Leon Flick, and bluegrass acoustic rock from Virginia City’s HomeMade Jam Band.

The event is produced in partnership with the BLM, Nevada Outdoor School, and Friends of Nevada Wilderness. Event fees include a one-year membership with the Friends of Black Rock High Rock, with reduced fees for current members. Further details and an event schedule can be found at http://BlackRockRendezvous.com.
