**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

Back in June of 1986, Larry Harvey and Jerry James built and burned the figure of a Man on San Francisco’s Baker Beach. All these years later, this annual event — and this movement — are still going strong, and getting stronger with each new Burner striving to embody the ethos and principles of Burning Man in their day-to-day lives. This year marks the 25th Burning Man event, and the beginning of our 25th year of radical expression! Burning Man’s impact is being felt in the world, thanks to YOU.

So here’s to YOU ALL for making it possible — and making it happen. To commemorate this auspicious occasion, we’re hosting a variety of celebratory events in June, and we welcome you to join in! If you’re in the Bay Area, come and join us in person, and if you’re elsewhere, manifest something in your own town — perhaps a neighborhood clean-up? A costume parade? Acts of random gifting? Cook some bacon? Participate!

To see what’s going on in the Bay Area, visit: http://bit.ly/bxg4kd

Well, it’s June and we’re on the steepening downhill slope towards the playa (the Man burns in 88 days, people!). The deadlines are fast approaching to register your projects, so it’s time to buckle down and get your art installations (July 1) and mutant vehicle (June 30) registration applications in. Looking forward to all the amazing stuff you kids are working on!

Finally, we say this now and again, and it bears repeating: we really enjoy meeting all you fine folks — in our random travels and excursions — who read and appreciate the JRS. Burners certainly are some wonderful people!

REGISTRATION DEADLINES APPROACHING

Theme Camps
The application deadline for theme camp pre-registration has passed, and we’ve posted a list of the theme camps who will be on playa in 2010, here: http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/10_camp_vill_a.html. Please note, being included on this list does NOT guarantee your theme camp will receive pre-placement. And, you can always bring your theme camp to Black Rock City, placing it yourself on a first-come first-served basis once the gates to the city open.

Art Installations
The registration deadline for art installations is July 1. If you miss that deadline, you can still bring your artwork to the playa and register it at the ARTery in Center Camp.

Mutant Vehicles
The registration deadline for Mutant Vehicles is June 30. If you fail to meet that deadline, your vehicle will not be considered for a vehicle pass to drive on the playa. You must have a letter from the DMV for your vehicle to be allowed through the Black Rock City gate.

To fill out a registration questionnaire, visit: http://forms.burningman.com

Thanks for participating!

RENO BIKE PROGRAMS – TIME TO GET ON IT!

There are two popular bike programs in the Reno area that sell or rent reliable and affordable bikes especially for life on the playa. To best meet the growing demand every year for this playa-essential from these loving bike shops, it is best to let you know about what they have to offer earlier than most other resources, so you too can get that “Can I still get a cool bike in Reno?” issue out of the way among other summer preparations for your adventures to Black Rock City.

Kiwanis Bike Project

If you are in need of a bike close to Reno, as well as great for the playa, reserving one from the Kiwanis Bike Program comes highly recommended. Kiwanis has a huge variety of bicycles ranging from $30-$50, and all purchases support the repairs and donation of bikes for at-risk kids in the Reno area. Moreover, if you return your bike to Kiwanis on your way home from the playa, they love it — they’ll refurbish and reuse it! Reserve your bike now as they go fast. The shop is open 9am-9pm (PST) daily the week before and during Burning Man to pick up your reserved bike, or to pick out a bike from those still available, before moving on to Black Rock City. For bike reservations and further information, or if you’d like to know more about their programs in northern Nevada, go to http://www.kiwanisbikes.org, and click on their Burning Man link.

Kiwanis Bike Project 2605 Comstock Drive Reno, NV 89512 775-846-7146 kiwanisbikes (at) att (dot) net http://www.kiwanisbikes.org

Black Rock Bicycles

Black Rock Bicycles in Reno is highly recommended as your transportation headquarters for rentals, as well as sales of bikes for the playa. Having a bicycle — especially a reliable one with comfort and style, with fat tires and a soft seat! — is a large part of the Burning Man experience and tradition, and is pretty much an essential to your overall enjoyment in Black Rock City. Just a few hours from the playa, they offer rentals as well as sell new/used bikes at affordable prices, which have been professionally cared for by experienced bike mechanics. Black Rock Bikes also has everything you need to be able to set your bike apart from the rest — lighting supplies, baskets, bells, locks, and many other items needed to have fun as well as be safe on the playa. Please check out their website for reservations and pick-up arrangements, and for other details at http://www.blackrockbicycles.com.

GERLACH GID SELLING POTABLE WATER FOR BURNING MAN

The fine folks from The Gerlach GID (General Improvement District) write to let us know they’ll be selling water to Burning Man participants this year … and we love to support Gerlach:

“The Gerlach GID, our local town governing body, will be selling potable water for filling up RVs and water tanks of any size starting August 27th. We will have ample filling stations in front of the community center, with directional signs located as you enter town on Main Street. Our rates this year will be comparable with Reno at .50/gallon up to 100 gallons, .45/gallon for sales above 100 and less than 200 gallons, and .40/gallon for sales larger than 200 gallons.

This decision has been made in an attempt to keep our water rates reasonable for the citizens of Gerlach. We have a top notch water treatment plant here, but due to the small size of our town, our 150 residents must pay for the maintenance of an entire water system. We want to provide a town resource to the participants of Burning Man, and we think this will save you money in addition to helping our town.

Water weighs 8 lbs per gallon, and by buying your water in Gerlach you will avoid paying fuel costs to transport your water from Reno or even farther.

Our hours of operation will be 12 pm – 10 pm with a person available on-call when closed. We are ONLY accepting cash payments as we do not have a credit/debit machine. PLEASE pass this information on to any regional lists you may be on! Our office can be contacted at 775-557-2601 or gerlachgid (at) yahoo (dot) com with any questions or to arrange fill-ups prior to August 27th.”

PRONE TO PLAYA NOSE? HERE’S A TIP.

Right there with ya on the old sensitive nose front. Might just buy a case of this stuff and bathe in it daily. Jasmine writes to suggest:

“I want to share this tip with you.

Every time I hit the playa I get an extremely dry nose. I guess I have a sensitive one because I always have seasonal allergies and sneeze a lot. After the second day on the playa I get these nose bleeds, like 6 times a day from dry playa dust and air. So my friend turned me on to this natural remedy, supposidly it was send in the backpacks of astronauts. It’s all natural and the best thing ever for me at that moment.

I am sure there are more people that might have this problem, so perhaps there’s a way you can share this with the world.

http://www.ponaris.net/

Thanks for your consideration.
See you on the playa with a fine nose!”

HELP DESIGN BURNING MAN’S STICKERS FOR METROPOLIS! DEADLINE JUNE 20

Hello friends and fellow playa-schwag-ophiles!

It’s that time again! Help design official 2010 Burning Man stickers!

That’s right! This is the official call for designs for the 2010 Burning Man stickers. Your design could be the one passed out with the materials you receive as you pass through the Greeters Station upon entering Black Rock City. Other designs will become official sticker schwag passed out randomly on and off the playa throughout the year.

Your sticker designs can vary in size from 2.25″ by 5.5″ to 3″ by 3″. Round designs should be 3″ in diameter. Please incorporate both the name Burning Man and the year 2010 into your design. Unfortunately, sticker designs are limited to only TWO or THREE colors. Please design accordingly.

Don’t you just love driving down the road and seeing a fellow burner with a “BRC” bumper sticker? Well, so do we! That’s why we are also looking for designs for 2010 car stickers. This sticker is traditionally a car window sticker that will be printed on clear vinyl and in two colors.

Designs for the car window stickers should be 2″ by 2″. Round car window stickers should be 2″ in diameter. Please make sure designs contain the Burning Man name and the year 2010. Unfortunately, sticker designs are limited to only TWO colors. Please design accordingly.

Whichever type of sticker tickles your fancy (or maybe your very ticklish and want to enter several designs), remember there IS a theme, and we like stickers that attempt to use the theme. This year’s theme is “Metropolis”. Read up on it at:

http://www.burningman.com/art_of_burningman/bm10_theme.html

Wondering how to get your sticker designs to us? Well, if at all possible, please post your design on a web page and send the URL to stickers@burningman.com; otherwise, send in a color separated vector Adobe Illustrator file to stickers (at) burningman (dot) com.

Whether sending your design or questions, please put “STICKER DESIGN ” in the subject header.

The deadline for design submissions is Sunday June 20th. Once again, please note that all artwork selected for stickers needs to be submitted in a color separated vector Illustrator file in the actual size the sticker is to be produced. Thank You and Good Luck!

DISPLAY YOUR SCULPTURE AT THE CROSSROADS ON PLAYA

Kay, one of our very most favorite people in the whole wide world, writes:

“Greetings Burners!

Iron Monkey Arts are inviting you to place those smaller, often lost works of art in a central sculpture courtyard at The Crossroads. Our 45′ perimeter courtyard will be centered around a fountain of fire and water surrounded by benches, zen fire pedestals, and 6 fiery columns. Your sculptures will add an integral component to The Crossroads by creating a public gallery. We hope to give you a great place to show your piece without the worry of it getting lost or run over on the open playa.

Please contact us at ima.crossroads (at) gmail (dot) com for more information.”

2010 BLACK ROCK CITY FILM FESTIVAL: CALL FOR ENTRIES

Jeff Ross writes:

“At this year’s Burning Man, the people behind the Boston Underground Film Festival and San Francisco IndieFest have joined together to form a new film festival that will take place during the event.

It’s the Black Rock City Film Festival and they’re looking for short films to screen for the residents of the temporary city that forms each summer in the Black Rock desert.

The festival will run on Aug. 31 to Sep. 3 and will begin with a Red Carpet Opening Night Gala before the first screening on Tuesday and end with a Wrap Party on Friday after the last film has been screened. Plus, there will be beer and cocktails each night before and between screenings at the camp’s Casting Couch Bar.

Just to be clear: BRCFF is not necessarily looking for films ABOUT Burning Man. You can submit any ol’ short film you have — as long as it’s under 30 minutes long. They just want short films in general that will appeal to the mad, wild crowd that converges on Black Rock City every year. Filmmakers with work in the festival are also invited to camp with fest organizers and their fellow makers!

Here are the deadlines for submitting:
Regular Deadline:
July 1

Late Dateline:
July 15

To actually submit, please visit the BRCFF Withoutabox page
http://www.withoutabox.com/login/5651

TINY TROPOLIS SEEKING ARTISTS TO CONTRIBUTE DIORAMAS

Are you looking for a GREAT way to contribute to the art on the playa this year?! Join Tiny Tropolis! We are one of Burning Man’s 2010 honorary art installations and we need artists to help bring our tiny city to life!

http://www.tinytropolis.com.

From a distance, Tiny Tropolis appears as a row of identical white boxes that have been secured, one after another, upon a structure stretching out over 80 feet across the playa. The heart of Tiny Tropolis lies within, and passersby will need to get in close to experience the richness of this installation. Each box contains a DIORAMA constructed by a different individual artist (that’s you). It is truly community-based- a collective project that funnels the artistic spirit of people across the planet into the most celebratory- albeit tiny- block party to hit the playa yet.

BURNING OPERA: “HOW TO SURVIVE THE APOCALYPSE” CALL-OUT FOR SKETCH ARTISTS, PIX

Did you know Erik Davis wrote the very first article about Burning Man, in the Village Voice (that would be in New York)? Well, he did, on October 1, 1995. You can find it here: http://www.techgnosis.com/burningman.html. And that there’s your trivia for today. Anyway, Erik writes:

“The creators of the underground hit musical “How to Survive the Apocalypse: a Burning Opera” are preparing to release a 2 CD studio recording with most of the original cast of their sold-out 2009 San Francisco run. Clips and more are available at http://burningopera.com, but for the moment just imagine a Burning Man-inspired spawn of Hair, Rocky Horror, and Jesus Christ Superstar (whose classic studio recording our CD cover will parody).

SKETCH ARTISTS:

For the CD booklet, which will contain the entire libretto along with some tasteless jokes, we would like to recruit an artist to do anywhere from 8 to 15 sketches, mostly of our main characters (including Stetson, the Larry Harvey character) but possibly of some random Burning Man scenes as well (art cars, random explosions, etc.; tons of inspiring images are available on http://images.burningman.com). We want these sketches to be lively, full of character, but also informal and not too terribly surreal.

We do have a modest budget for the artist; please select one of the character photos http://www.michaelrauner.com/opera/index_3.html and send us your version to stiltbat (at) hotmail (dot) com by 6/4/2010.”

PHOTOS:

For the CD booklet and CD art, we are looking for three very specific photographs. (The rest of the booklet art will be sketches.) We have a modest budget. (The CD is also going to kick ass).

For the opening spread (two CD pages) we want a panoramic daytime horizon shot of the playa without any sign of human structure, though tire tracks could be OK.

For the final booklet spread we were thinking of either a nighttime panorama shot of Black Rock City in all its glory, or a post-event panorama during clean up, showing a few structures, cars, refuse, etc. In both cases we want as few people in the shot as possible, and those that are there should be in the distance.

Finally, we want a simple close-up birds-eye view of the cracked surface of the playa to use as part of the cover art and the art on the CD itself. In this shot, a tire track would be great.

If you can help us out with shots of your own, send them to erik (at) techgnosis (dot) com. The images need to be 300 dpi, 12″ x 5″ wide in the case of the panos and 5″ x 5″ for the playa surface.”

ONLINE FUNDRAISER FOR LOWRES PROJECT

Sean Stevens writes:

“Hi There!
I’m having an online fundraiser for my latest project –

It’s called lowRes, short for low resource. Since it doesn’t need fuel beyond pedal power, and some sun if available.

I really want to show people that alternative energy isn’t about compromise, it’s actually better. Seriously who wants to deal with all those gas cans on the Playa if you’re gonna play all week?!

And I’m simplifying and open sourcing the design work that I do so other people can create similar things.

The website is at http://lowRes.info

It has 10 Pedal-Electric generators, an electric drive train, and 58 Farad ultra-capacitors to increase the efficiency.

I have an existing sound system (www.sustainablesound.org) that was on the Playa in 2009, as well as a bunch of LED lighting. (see also www.sustainablesound.org)

So far I’ve raised about 20% ($3200, from donations and small grants) of my total goal of $16,800, but even if I only make it to about 40% I’ll be able to make the basic system functional. It just won’t be quite as awesome (but still awesome, of course). I’m gonna make it happen and bring it to Burning Man… it’s already well under way.

I’ve already tested smaller one and two person vehicles based on my ideas and they work great.

It would help me create and share something really amazing.

If you’re working on a smaller vehicle and are interested in the technology, check out the site and get in touch and I’ll be able to help you out.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS, MAKERS AND FREEDOM-LOVERS TO EPHEMERISLE! – JULY 22- 25

You may remember we posted this last time in the JRS, but yeeeaaah, it didn’t *quite* have links. Oooops. So here it is again, this time with links! Woo!

“Imagine a small Burning Man-like event that takes place on the water. And focuses on freedom, creativity and community.

Ephemerisle 2010 will be our second year of hosting a floating festival on California’s Sacramento River Delta — and we want YOU to come check it out!

People will bring their crafts and their ideas to build an eclectic temporary village of boats, rafts, junks, and other floating structures organized into five separate island nations. A large central barge will serve as a common space for everyone to come together. We’ll have art, music, dance, open mic performances, classes … and whatever other interesting rituals and events participants create and share. YOU will define what Ephemerisle 2010 turns out to be.

Tickets are on sale now through Brown Paper Tickets http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/107294.

Check out http://ephemerisle.org/ for information about workshops on building and powering your own floating platform, volunteer opportunities, artist/maker/scholarship tickets, and so much more.

Questions can be directed to ephemerisle (at) seasteading (dot) org. For the “big idea” behind Ephemerisle, check out www.seasteading.org.”
