{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

July is upon us, and we’re heading into high gear towards the playa here at BMHQ. The Man is built (we’ve got a cool five-minute time lapse video for ya down below), the first DPW crew is gearing up to head to the playa in the next few weeks, and it’s about this time around BMHQ that you don’t want to mention how many days until the Man burns, lest you incite mild panic amongst the staff. 🙂

We’ve published the 2010 Black Rock City plan! New this year, the plan includes a set of new truly PUBLIC plazas on the 3:00, 6:00, & 9:00 streets, out near the back of the city (Jakarta street, specifically). We are holding most of the camping space around these plazas unreserved and available for the general public to develop and maintain as a Metropolis-theme experiment in spontaneous urban planning and collaboration. Pretty cool, huh? First come first served!

We also note that you painters, small-scale sculptors, and other artists who work on a small or more intimate scale have an opportunity to showcase your works on the playa at the Center Camp Cafe. See below for more information.

And there’s even a Burning Man class at Iowa State this year! For those design students, for all you excited theme campers, for the eager new Burner, for the jaded old timer…the Man burns in 58 days (but please … don’t tell anybody at BMHQ).

We hope your playa planning is going well!

FASTEST EFFIGY IN THE WEST: THE FIVE-MINUTE MAN BUILD

Here’s a great video of the intrepid Man Krew constructing the Man at our workshop in Black Rock Station, NV. Enjoy!

P.S. if you slow it down, you’ll learn how to make your very own Man! OK, not really.

BURNING MAN SEEKS DJANGO DEVELOPERS FOR PAID CONTRACT OPPORTUNITY

The Burning Man Technology Department is seeking a Django developer or two for a paid contract gig. We need your help to get an exciting new Playa Directory ready to premiere in Black Rock City! The initial 3-month project would begin immediately and includes providing some onsite support in Black Rock City. There is the possibility for additional work in the Fall and Winter months, and maybe even longer.

Bay Area location is not required, but is preferred. This position does require you to go to Burning Man 2010! There will be work on the playa, but plenty of time for fun too!

If you are an experienced Django pony rider and savvy developer, a collaborative team player, and committed to creating an excellent user experience for our friends in BRC as well as year-round website visitors, then we would like to hear from you! Please send a resume and cover letter to djangodev (at) burningman (dot) com by July 15, 2010.

Required Skills: Django, Python
Bonus Skills: Pinax, GeoDjango, jQuery, HTML5, CSS, Apache

CLASS ON BURNING MAN ARCHITECTURE OFFERED AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

Samantha Krukowski, from the Department of Architecture at the College of Design of Iowa State University wrote to let us know about her course studying Burning Man Architecture — in a very hands-on way, of course. Their page reads, in part:

“12 Iowa State University design students [will be] participating in Burning Man for college credit. Except for the occasional graduate student researcher or class studying the festival from afar, they are the first design students taking a course that requires them to create work for Burning Man since the festival’s inception.

The 12 are enrolled in Samantha Krukowski’s summer class, ‘Shifting Sands: Transient Architectures in the Desert.’ For 20 hours each week since May 17, they’ve explored the history and meaning of the Burning Man Festival and created artworks that they will transport, install, and remove from the playa (dry lakebed) location.”

A FASCINATING QUOTE — ABOUT BLACK ROCK CITY?

Lost’n’Found writes to offer this interesting tidbit:

“Just found this in one of my random reads and thought of BRC:

‘In such circumstances the mind is influenced through the body. Though your mouth glows, and your skin is parched, yet you feel no languor,- the effect of dry heat; your lungs are lightened, your sight brightens, your memory recovers its tone, and your spirits become exuberant. Your fancy and imagination are powerfully aroused, and the wildness and siblimity of the scenes around you, stir up all the energies in your soul, whether exertion, danger, or strife. Your morale improves; you become frank and cordial, hospitable and single-minded; the hypocritical politeness and the slavery of Civilization are left behind you. Your senses are quickened; they require no stimulants but air and exercise; in the desert spriritous liquors excite only disgust.

There is a keen enjoyment in mere animal existence. The sharp appetite disposes of the most indigestible food; the sand is softer than a bed of down, and the purity of the air suddenly puts flight a dire cohort of diseases.

Here Nature returns to Man, however unworthily he has treated her, and, believe me, when once your tastes have conformed to the tranquility of such travel, you will suffer real pain in returning to the turmoil of civilization. You will anticipate the bustle and confusion of artificial life, its luxuries and its false pleasures, with repugnance. Depressed in spirits, you will for a time after your return feel incapable of mental or bodily exertion. The air of the Cities will suffocate you, and the careworn and cadaverous countenances of citizens will haunt you like a vision of judgement.’

DRIVE SAFELY WHEN GOING TO/FROM BURNING MAN. HERE’S WHY.

We’ll probably publish this more than once before the event this year, because this cannot be stressed enough: DRIVE SAFELY, PEOPLE! 2 Ravens writes:

“Thought you might find this 2009 Burningman photo illustrative when the time comes to discuss careful driving during the exodus:

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: PUT YOUR ART IN THE CAFE AT BM2010!

Greetings Burning World!

How would you like to place your art in the biggest, most populated structure on the Playa? That’s right! You have the opportunity to show off your talent & ideas in Center Camp Cafe for Burning Man 2010!

Help us enhance this environment and engage your fellow Black Rock Citizens as they sit and mingle in this most popular of public spots on the Playa. We are looking for art in all shapes and sizes! If you have a sculpture that would get lost in the great open playa, but might be appreciated in a more intimate setting, please let us know! Or if you have a larger piece that would work perfectly in one of our “alcove” areas around the perimeter of the Cafe, we’d love to hear about it!

AND did you know, starting last year, we now host a GIGANTIC two-dimensional wall art gallery to show paintings, photographs, and whatever you can hang on a board? If you are a painter or photographer and always felt lost in giant art world on the Playa, now is your opportunity to shine and be a part of our KIOSK project. The works must fit into a 48″ x 48″ space and extend no further than 12″ from the kiosk surface. To see pictures of the Kiosk spaces, and other parts of the Cafe, see Flickr gallery here: http://bit.ly/bFraTY

To be a part of this beautiful and exciting environment, please submit an application by filling out our on-line form: http://tinyurl.com/CAFE-ART-HOME Once you’ve done that, someone will get back to you to talk about your project. For questions, please e-mail cafe-art (at) burningman (dot) com

Thanks!
Jonesy Jones and the Cafe Art Team

WISHING WELL AT KIDSVILLE SEEKS RIVER ROCKS AND AN ART CAR RIDE

Yay Kidsville! They write:

“The Wishing Well at Kidsville is returning this year to grant wishes across the playa.

We are seeking small (2″ – 3″) flat smooth river rocks, suitable for writing on, from all over the US and the rest of the world. Even if you can only bring 1 rock from your homeland, please bring it to the wishing well, which should be located at the corner of 5:30 and D at Kidsville. We want the energy of wishes to span the breadth of the entire Burner community across the globe and hopefully from the Burning Man Organization and Black Rock Arts Foundation as well.

Also, the kids of Burning Man are working on a fairy and wizard theater piece to celebrate gifting, and we are in need of a large, magical art car to transport them on Wednesday morning to several spots on the playa where they will be gifting magic and wishes to a variety of playa recipients. Please contact Kether at kether (at) sigilmanagement (dot) com if you can help! Thanks, and may all your wishes come true. )*(”

BUY A BEAUTIFUL PENDANT TO SUPPORT KATE RAUDENBUSH’S FUTURES PAST

Kate Raudenbush is one of Burning Man’s most accomplished sculptors, having created numerous art installations for the playa … bringing them all the way from her New York studio. Many of her pieces have had extended life in the real world as well, from Reno to New York. You can see the amazing work she’s done on her website:

http://www.kateraudenbush.com/

She’s working on another piece for this year called “Futures Past”, and she’s created a pendant to raise funds for the project. This is a beautiful pendant, and a wonderful keepsake. Check it out … she says:

“I recently designed a Futures Past pendant to raise money to build the sculpture. It is a leaf with circutry veins. It’s brushed laser cut stainless steel, and I’m selling it for $25. Thanks. Xxkate”

You can see it, and get yours here:
