MAKE GREAT GRAPHIC DESIGN HAPPEN FOR BURNING MAN!

Have you always wanted to have a design considered for an official Burning Man project, but didn’t know how? Have you been dying to share your deep love of typography and clean design with the larger Burning Man community? Well, this is your big chance! We’re currently seeking contact with new designers for our design pool. So if you’re an experienced graphic designer brimming with amazing ideas who is also savvy in setting up files for press, get in touch with us! Here’s how:

– send an email to design (at) burningman (dot) com and include a link where we can view samples of your work,
– or if your pieces aren’t online, you are also welcome to send samples to us in the mail (include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you need your items returned to you.) Mail can be sent to Burning Man, Attn: Design, PO Box 884688, San Francisco, CA 94188-4688
– Please indicate what types of projects you like to work on best, and what you feel are your design strengths.

We have several projects throughout the year for which we have calls for submissions, and we’d love to include you for consideration!

GREENING THE EXODUS

How many years have you sat in the Exodus line calculating the fuel wasted by the thousands of cars stopping and going, stopping and going? How many times have you thought to yourself, “Self, isn’t there a better way to do this, isn’t there a way to make this more efficient, more pleasant, more Green?”

In 2010, we are going to Green the Exodus, and WE NEED YOUR HELP. We have a plan. We need the people.

Ever heard of pulsing? Pulsing is the practice of separating a mass of cars into blocks, and then moving one block at a time quickly while the other blocks wait their turn to move quickly. The result: Only a fraction of the entire mass of cars has to be running at a particular time. AND? It takes the same amount of time to get out of Black Rock City as it does if everyone creeps along.

HOLY CRAP, THAT’S AWESOME. HOW CAN I HELP? You can volunteer with Exodus, and sign up to be a PULSER! We need 10 hearty souls who aren’t afraid of a little dust to work 4-hour shifts on gate road on Sunday and Monday during the Exodus.

We need you. Please sign up to be a Pulser. If you’re interested, contact:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT BLACK ROCK CITY VENDOR PASSES

If you must receive a delivery from the outside world, you must be sure that the driver can get into the city, and find you or your camp. To streamline this process for 2010, parties requiring deliveries now have two options: purchasing a non-refundable participant admission TICKET for deliveries, or purchasing a vendor PASS. A vendor pass offers some advantages over a ticket including early arrival, multiple deliveries, and expedited access. Don’t panic! The new “vendor pass” does not signify a shift in Burning Man’s non-commodificaion policy. We are not allowing vending on the playa! These are pre-arranged services of a logistical or support nature of the sort that camps and artists have used for years – we’re just finding a better way to include that traffic through the gate.

USING NONREFUNDABLE PARTICIPANT ADMISSION TICKETS:

– This is the same process that has been in play for years – however due to abuses and the difficulty of tracking, REFUNDS WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE for delivery drivers entering and exiting the city. You must buy a ticket, nonrefundable, to get your driver in.
– A registered camp or artist representative must be on site to receive deliveries, otherwise deliveries will be refused entry.
– The driver must know your ON-SITE CONTACT’S NAME and THE NAME OF YOUR CAMP. (Many camps have delivery mishaps because this information is not with the driver. Don’t let this happen to you!
– If you are a registered, placed theme camp, Gate will contact your Placer and the your Placer will alert you of their arrival.
– You will need to meet the delivery at the gate and escort them to your camp and back out of our city again.
– The Placement Team will lend guidance as to the safest route to and from your camp.
– If you are not a registered theme camp and you must have a delivery, then someone MUST be at the Gate to escort the delivery, otherwise they will be turned away.

GREATER, FASTER ACCESS WITH USING NEW VENDOR PASSES:

– Does not require receiver to be a registered, placed theme camp or artist.
– Access to expedited vendor access at special vendor Gate.
– Access to Pre-placed dropoff/pickup points for on-playa deliveries/presence.
– Unlimited in and outs for services making multiple deliveries—the pass is designed for vendors that have a need for frequent access to the “outside world”, otherwise the ticket option above is still the best bet.

Why we’re doing this:
– To find a better balance between de-commodification and radical self-reliance.
– To encourage communal effort and hopefully lessen the overall environmental impact of our event.
– “Refundable” vendor tickets created a disproportionate drag on our staffing resources and were frequently abused.
– Expedited vendor access at entry reduces wait times for everyone.

For more information, including pricing, email vendorpass (at) burningman (dot) com

PLAYATECH ANNOUNCES COMFORT EFFICIENCY BREAKTHROUGH FOR A DUSTY METROPOLIS

Here’s another instance of radical simplification from Sunshine, who says:

“I saw our sliced & slotted seating all over Evolution; thanks everyone! Can you makers please send pix for our web site to Sunshine@Playatech.com? And don’t forget to hit BRAF’s paypal-it-forward button when you build our latest gizmos!

http://www.Playatech.com/BlackJack (in our Bare Necessities department)

Playatech is pleased to announce its revolutionary BlackJack, the future of ultra-cheap floor seating for the modern metropolis. The crash broke our asses, so we broke the backs off our delicious designs to create the world’s simplest floor seats for 2. And 4. And 8! Even 12 if you snuggle, because they’re down in the dirt, like Athens. Just perfect for spiritual workshops, dusty picnics, raver parking, and reclaiming that dumb space around the perimeter of your dome.

Using our three simple designs, some tarps or canvas, and a couple pillows, you can lounge in playa heaven in no time, with a soft space to land for up to 24 Burners made from just ONE sheet of plywood! That’s two Burners per slot! Zero MOOP to boot. Build some quick before the world’s ply supply disappears – because we kicked Ikea off the Esplanade, so now we’re out to take the shirt off Beijing’s back.

PLAYATECH – Bringing Any Metropolis Down To Earth”

DEDICATION OF ART PROJECT TO THE MEMORY OF TOM KENNEDY

We miss Tom Kennedy and his incredible spirit, creativity, and contributions to the world of mobile Burning Man art. In case you don’t know his work, you can see some of it here:

http://www.tomkennedyart.com/blog/?page_id=90

Capra writes:

“As we near the completion of the Aeolian Pyrophonic Hall art project, we realized that building and burning this art project was an opportunity to honor the memory of Tom Kennedy, a very active burner and creator of art cars who died tragically last year. Tom Kennedy is the beloved brother of one of our most active team members, Andy Kennedy, who has been one of the leads creating wind harps for our project, so we have decided to dedicate the Hall (also known to our team by its shorter name: the Portal) to his memory. We plan to create a plaque at the front of our piece dedicated to Tom with some pictures of him and with the names of our volunteers and donors.

We hope that burners who remember Tom will bring their memories of him to burn with our structure, and will be able to meet Andy. This is Andy’s first time coming to the burn, and he is also bringing his 16 year-old son Ray, who has been helping us build alongside his dad. If you have good pictures of Tom, we’d love to have them to pick a few for the plaque.

Please e-mail Capra: capra (at) firebulb (dot) com with remembrances of Tom or bring your remembrances by the Portal, between the Man & the Temple at 1:30.”

BLACK ROCK SOLAR IN THE NEWS

Tom Price sent this out to the Burning Man staff, and we thought you’d enjoy it too:

“Black Rock Solar is in the media twice today, for different projects.

This one talks about our dedication tomorrow in Nixon of the eight solar arrays we’ve built there; there are now more solar panels per person in Nixon than any other town in America:

http://www.mynews4.com/story.php?id=23395&n=122

And another one about our final project before the playa, for the Fernley Fire Station:

http://www.rgj.com/article/20100721/FERNLEY01/7210329/1306/fernley

This last project will put us over the top of having built 1 megawatt, or 1,000,000 watts of low or no cost solar, in the last three years. We’re finishing just in time, as almost our entire crew needs to now head out to BRC to work for DPW.

Anyway, here’s the clips, and if you see any of that crew out there tell them good job–they’ve just finished building 12 solar arrays back to back since January, a pretty awesome achievement.”

BURNING MAN FEATURED IN BBC SHOW “AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 FAITHS”

Playa Barbie writes:

“The BBC ran a show called ‘Around the World in 80 Faiths’ in the UK last year, and Burning Man was the subject of one of the episodes. I watched it (prepared for some major cynicism) but was totally gratified by the conclusion of the show’s host, Church of England vicar Peter Owen. I thought the link would be of interest.

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS SEEKS MUSICIANS & PERFORMERS

Chelsea and Ninja write:

“Dear Burners, musicians, performers,

I’m writing to invite you to lend your talents to a very special on-playa project that will reach people around the world. For the first time, Burners Without Borders is inviting all the artists at Burning Man to stop by during the week and make a little art for the “next disaster”. Our idea is that art can make a difference when people are in pain and experiencing loss.

A little history of Burners Without Borders: BwB came to life in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when a group of Burners took the skills, resources and creativity they gained on the playa and put them to use rebuilding a Buddhist Temple in Biloxi, Mississippi and helped rebuild the town of Pearlington, Mississippi. Since its inception in the Gulf Coast, BwB has sent volunteers to Peru to help in the rebuilding of Lima after the 2007 earthquake. Most recently, we sent volunteers and aid to Haiti after the devastating earthquake earlier this year and have spearheaded or supported other relief and aid efforts around the world (visit www.burnerswithoutborders.org for more detailed information on our work). In the past few years, BwB has gained national support, with chapters in multiple cities across the country.

While not everyone can fly to Peru or Haiti, this project provides a way touch people around the world without leaving the playa. We will have all the supplies necessary to make signs that provide warnings, relief information, or simple hope, as well as a screen printing studio for gear and SWAG. We will also have a music stage staffed by professional recording engineers and tour managers to keep the vibe alive while we’re at work and at play.

That’s where you come in! We are so thrilled to invite you to spend an hour contributing your craft and creativity to the occasion. The next time Burners Without Borders responds to need, they will be able to introduce this art when the time is right.

The BwB engineers will also be able to record your performance and give it to you for your own promotional use. And, with your permission, we will post the recording onwww.burnerswithoutborders.org in an effort to create a “Live on Playa” music compliation. This album would be available to download for local BwB-chapters to use as a fundraising tool. Obviously, your intellectual property and performance rights are paramount, so we will happily respect your preferences.

We would love it if you could stop by and make some music with us. The stage will be open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. Will be scheduling hourly slots. We would also deeply appreciate your help in spreading the word to artists in your community and in your camp.

This project allows us all to become Burners Without Borders. BwB is less of an organization and more of a commitment to take our values off the Playa and offer our gifts and love to a world in need of both.

Please call Chelsea or Ninja to book your set. Chelsea – 608.334.2001 Ninja – 847.840.1613

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Chelsea & Ninja
Talent Programming Leads

KOSTUME KULT NEEDS COSTUMES AND LAWN ANIMALS

Costume Jim writes:

“Calling all Burners! — Kostume Kult needs help with our annual mission of ‘costuming the naked’ and all those who come unprepared for this magnificent experience. To do so, our Esplanade costume dome needs assistance with costume and accessory donations – underused clutter or costumes with a past glory that can now be passed to others to mix and match as only burners can.

Over the last few years we have gotten many-many boxes of costumes donated by costume shops, theater groups and burners like you and, for 5 days– tuesday afternoon through saturday, we help outfit people for the playa empowering them to have more fun and make better connections reinforcing the bm spirit that lives on with them afterwards… In the Kostume Dome, where everyone needs to wear what they want to take with them, each guest leaves via our runway out onto the esplanade with the encouragement of our MCs and DJs. The perfect place to recycle that stuff you no longer need! For more on our costume recylcling program, check the glossy we send out to costume shops and theater groups at: http://kostumekult.com/bm2010/recycle/KKCostumeSolicit2010.pdf

In addition — about the Lawn Animals — This year we are seeking help with our “Grand Absurdity Plaza” runway arch… Located on esplanade frontage at 8:08 this will be an arch reminiscent of Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza ( http://i.pbase.com/u26/automat42/upload/19674618.ArchGrandArmyPlaza005.JPG) over our fashion runway where its war memorial statuary (three clusters of horses and soldiers) will be replaced by an absurdist hodge-podge of lawn animals, nativity scene figures and other such lightweight pieces… THE PROBLEM we discovered in doing this is that mostly such figures are now inflatables and we are scrambling to find things that will work for the vision (3 clusters of figures on the top and sides of the arch mixing genres, from nativity scene to christmas reindeer, halloween props and pink flamingos— The ideas being lightweight plastic lawn creatures, mannequins and other whimsical things… And we would love to top this with a burnified jesus on the very top holding the kostume kult flag and a blinking light — so we can find our way home! 😉

Costumes or silliness, if you have stuff to donate or know where to buy lawn animals cheap—- please email kkostumes (at) gmail (dot) com… (and we can help with shipping $ for larger bundles and the lawn art)

Much love!

MYTROPOLIS INVITES BRC CITIZENS TO PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The Mytropolis folks write:

“Mytropolis is a multi-dimensional sculpture garden playa installation this year made from your reclaimed and recycled wood. Based on a well known circular city, Mytropolis has a 60’ radius. In the center is an 11’ tall arch. On one side of the arch is a stairway leading to a top platform, offering a fish eye view of a very small world.

Citizens of BRC (past and future), Artists, Theme Camps, Sugar Folk; All have the opportunity to share art/sculpture/energies or resources to the installation throughout the beginning of the week. Mytropolis will grow and manifest it’s city vibe out on the playa as participants buildings arrive and fill the installation space.

Mytropolis requests only that anyone willing to help contribute does no more or less than what they are willing to do. Buildings and features within Mytropolis should be: anywhere from 1ft to 8ft tall, NON-MOOPING, freestanding or spikeable, and not contain toxic materials. With so many possibilities within a mini-city on a giant dry lake, How will you represent your own vision?

On Saturday, the 4th of September, there will be performances of “Monsters vs. the City” throughout the day. BRC Monsters will rampage through appropriate blocks of Mytropolis! Destroyed buildings will be put inside the center arch to burn and celebrate later that night. All MOOP will be collected before during and after.

All buildings will be vetted through the MyTropolis theme camp lounge at 4:30 & Baghdad. If you cannot create a building or city feature, Mytropolis is also looking for “billboards” to display advertising for your camp or activity in print or digital.

When you say the word “My-trop-ol-is” you take ownership. Have a great burn.

What Will You Build? Learn more, make contact, donate: http://mytropolis.com

CULTIVATED ART INSTALLATION NEEDS YOUR WHITE SHOES

Merrilee writes:

“Have some unwanted, unworn, and unloved white shoes kicking around? Interested in contributing to art on the playa? Read on!

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is the golden period during which one* may wear white shoes. Our art piece, “Cultivated” pays homage to the close of white shoe season. As artists with only the normal number of white shoes, but seeking a truly outrageous number of such, we earnestly request the donation of your gently worn white shoes. We are not in the market for white sneakers, or run-of-the-mill white pumps, but are looking for really spectacular shoes. We regretfully cannot use use shoes that are off-white, nor those that are mostly white, but also some other color. Boots would be great additions to our collection, as would men’s shoes. Do you have some great shoes to contribute to the cause? We’d love to feature them! We can accept donations via snail mail or you can drop them off in Berkeley, Oakland, or San Mateo. We are happy to vet donations via camera phone. Unfortunately, due to the nature of our piece and playa conditions, we cannot guarantee return of your shoes. But we can guarantee enjoyment, and photos, along with our heartfelt thanks.

*The “ones” that are excepted from this rule year round, are brides, athletes, and those in uniform that require white shoes. White tennis shoes are always okay. We have much more to say on this topic, but will save it for the playa!

ELEPHANT BIRD CAMP IS LOOKING FOR BANDS

“We at Elephant Bird Camp love the amazing electronic music that comes to burning man every year, but feel like the live band acts are far too underrepresented. EBC was thus created to not only give bands a place to perform and play, but also a place for people to watch and get down to some funky, rocky, sexy music. We still have a couple more live band slots available for our show on wednesday. We will be located at 7:30 and B.

Be on the lookout for the fun and shenanigans as a discombobulated parade of Kinetic Sculptures makes it way across the Metropolis from 2:00 and Baghdad to 9:00 and Hanoi and everywhere in between! Check our website for participating theme camps and find out if your neighbors are on the race course and then sit back and enjoy the fun with us!

The race line-up will start happening at the Kinetic Cab Co., located on the Esplanade at 9:00, around 3PM. This is a spectacle you won’t want to miss!

Team Tiny is getting more ambitious! Sweet! They write:

“We Tinies at TinyTropolis have jumped into the abyss and doubled our installation. One hundred artists have committed to creating little worlds in boxes and the wait list is growing. Originally, we intended to have 50 dioramas lined up on the playa and now are raising just a little more money to make TinyTropolis go big. With twice the artists, the vision has grown. One tiny contribution for a burner makes a giant contribution for TinyTropolis. Please consider a tiny donation at our kickstarter page:

Like any burgeoning Metropolis has vending machines, newspaper dispensers, or post-office boxes so should Black Rock City have Pee Funnel Dispensers Pee Funnels allow ladies to aim into a bottle or jug or stand and pee. It’s a costly affair, show us some love:
