**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

As you’re heading to the playa from all points on the map, we’re here to help you make any and all pit stops along the way. We’ve compiled a collection of resources in the major towns you’ll pass through, whichever direction you’re coming from — even from the air.

So if you want to grab that last shower, pick up another 6-pack, find a tent, or just take a moment to kiss sweet civilization goodbye, we’ve got you handled …

From the West or South (or flying in), we’ve got Reno covered. From the Northwest, Cedarville. From the East, we got Lovelock and Fernley. And then, when you get up close to the playa, our favorite small desert towns, Gerlach and Empire.

And on your way out, we’ve got your tip for car washes, dumping your garbage, disposing of your recycling and … showers. Mmmmm showers.

And hey, seriously … please pay all these towns the utmost respect on your way through. They are our year-round neighbors in the high desert, and we appreciate them for always being so welcoming as we invade their Nevada backyard every year. Remember, you represent our community. When patronizing any local businesses, please be respectful and courteous, and Leave No Trace. And keep your pants on.

FULL-BLOWN RENO INFORMATION

The Reno area is the nearest major metropolitan area to black Rock City, which is 2.5 hours away. Whether it’s for an hour’s pit-stop or multi-day layover, our website has a broad and incredibly deep section packed with information on all of the important local resources — supermarkets, curiosity shops, water and hardware stores, restaurants, hotels, recycling, trash, and greywater disposal, you name it — its all mapped out for your navigational planning (which is no mean feat in Reno).

These pages are painstakingly updated each year by a team of locals who well know whereof they speak. Check it out:

RENO-TAHOE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The folks at Reno-Tahoe International Airport tell us that Burning Man is their second-most busy time of year, with approximately 15,000 Burners coming through on their way to the playa. WOW, that’s like almost 1-in-3 participants! We’ve compiled information and a list of resources that will help make your travel through RTIA as smooth-flying as possible. Check it out here:

AIR PLAYA INFO RETURNS TO RENO-TAHOE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Through the coordinated efforts of the Burning Man Project, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, and local resources, Air Playa Info returns for its third year to provide information and resources for travelers on their way to Burning Man.

Located next to Baggage Claim inside the airport, volunteers at the Air Playa Info table will help answer your questions, provide directions and maps, and share information about BRC and all kinds of Reno-area resources — including Rideshare options.

Air Playa Info will be available from Friday, August 27 through Friday, September 3.

BIKES – CAN I STILL GET A GOOD BIKE IN RENO?

There are two shops in Reno close to our heart that still have reliable and affordable bikes for rent or purchase.

Kiwanis Bike Project

Highly recommended, we’re told that Kiwanis in Reno still has a few used bikes available for Burners to purchase — reserve online now before they’re all gone! All bike purchases support the repairs and donation of bikes for at-risk kids in the Reno area. Moreover, if you return your bike to Kiwanis on your way home from the playa, they love it ñ theyíll refurbish and reuse it! The shop is open daily from 9am-9pm the week before and during Burning Man to pick up your reserved bike.

Kiwanis Bike Project
2605 Comstock Drive, Reno

Black Rock Bicycles

Also highly recommended, as they cater primarily to us Burners, Black Rock Bicycles in Reno offers brand new durable cruisers for rent and purchase for both women and men. They also offer a variety of bike-accessories — locks, bells, lighting, baskets, racks, and fashion. Finally, if you happen to purchase a bike from them and do not want to take it home with you, if you return it to them post-burn, they’ll donate it to Black Rock City’s Community Bike Program. Visit their website for further information, and to make both rental or purchase arrangements.

Final Notes on Bikes in Reno:

First, the very popular Rats Bikes of Reno, which offers rentals exclusively to long-distance Burners, has been out of bikes all summer. If you’re looking for a real good bike rental for Black Rock City in 2011, remember to send Rat an email in May of 2011 — nv_desert_rat (at) nvbell (dot) net.

Second, there are other, general bike shops in the Reno area, please check out the Bikes page in the Reno Pages for further info:

2010 RENO-SPARKS-WADSWORTH RECYCLING PROJECT

This marks the fourth, evolutionary year of what has turned out to be a very successful, no-strings-attached, multi-community endeavor to support the recycling efforts of Burners during and following Burning Man…

2010 Reno-Sparks-Wadsworth Free Drive-Thru Recycling

Friday, August 27 through Wednesday, September 8, 2010 – Open 24 Hours

ACCEPTED RECYCLABLES: Plastics (SPI 1,2,3,4,& 5), glass, all metals (aluminum, tin, steel, brass, etc.), paper, cardboard, plastic bags, household (rechargeable and disposable) batteries, bicycles, and non-perishable food and water.

Simply drive into the parking lot and sort and deposit your recyclables into the appropriate containers. Please have your recyclables as clean as possible and remove from bags before depositing.

Disposal of non-recyclable waste will also be available for recyclers at approximately $3 per standard 35-gallon trash bag.

Proceeds from recyclables, and proceeds beyond expenses for garbage disposal, will be donated to help support new Black Rock Solar installations in the region. Non-perishable food and water will be donated to local Food Banks. Bikes will be donated to local Kiwanis and American Legion bike programs for kids.

Your participation and care is very much appreciated!

RIDESHARE LOCATIONS IN RENO

Tons of Burners fly into Reno looking for rideshare options to the playa (which is 2.5 hours away). Luckily, many Burners stop in Reno for supplies on their way to the Burn. To best match those looking for rides with those who have a ride to share, there are three Reno rideshare locations…

If you get to any of these locations (during their regular business hours), you should be able to negotiate a ride with little difficulty. These locations are next to a major travel route to Burning Man, and they’re about 10 minutes from the Reno Airport. If you are flying into Reno, check in at Air Playa Info (see above) inside the Reno Airport to see about carpooling a taxi with others or taking a shuttle (see below) to one of these locations.

Some things to keep in mind:

The parking lot — the best spot to inquire about a ride — is not just for Burners. Other people come to shop there too, so please only inquire for a ride among Burners: We tend to stand out!
Offering to chip in for gas may be helpful if you can.
Leave No Trace!
Everyone in the vehicle must be wearing a seatbelt — it’s the law.
And be comfortable with those in the vehicle before hopping on-board.

Right. Now here they are, the three Rideshare Locations:

Save Mart Supermarket
525 Keystone Ave – 775-786-2150
Open 24/7.

Whole Foods Market
6139 South Virginia Street – 775-829-8666
Open Open 8am-9pm.

Trader Joes
5035 South McCarran Blvd – 775-826-1621
Open 8am-10pm (staying open late for us!)

RENO AIRPORT SHUTTLE TO RIDESHARE BASE

Additionally, for those flying into Reno on Monday or Tuesday (August 30-31), there will also be a free shuttle to take you from the airport to one of the rideshare bases. The shuttle will be operating from 10am-2pm, and from 6:30-8:30pm on Monday and Tuesday, transporting people from the airport to the Save Mart rideshare location. Check in at Air Playa Info first if you are interested in taking the shuttle, and they’ll schedule you for the next shuttle. Big props to The Amendment 21 and the Reno-Tahoe International Airport for very generously gifting this free service to the Burning Man community!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM RENO TO BLACK ROCK CITY

OK, so you’ve done what you need to do … you’ve got your ride packed to the gills, you’re gassed up, you’re ready to venture forth from Reno, and out to Black Rock City. How the heck do you …? Ahhhh, driving directions:

FROM THE NORTHWEST: CEDARVILLE & ALTURAS

The town of Cedarville, CA is a great stop if you’re coming to Black Rock City from the northwest on Route 299. Their chamber of commerce and the people of the town are opening welcome arms to traveling Burners, and working hard to support us. More info and a list of businesses here:

http://bit.ly/1aoPkG

In Alturas:

4-Corners Market in Alturas will stay open for all 24 hours leading up to the opening of Burning Man to help customers make it through the night and not hold anyone up from getting supplies and making it to the Black Rock Desert. Just a reminder that they cannot sell alcohol between 2 am and 6 am. We have plenty of water, food and hoses outside for your convenience.

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

FROM THE EAST: LOVELOCK

Set on the western edge of “Cowboy Country,” Lovelock, the County Seat of Pershing County, is the last major pit stop on I-80 heading west before you veer north to the playa. Great place to stop, get your sleep on, get your supplies-gathering on, while enjoying some history. Get the details here:

http://bit.ly/K68zP

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

FROM THE EAST: FERNLEY

West of Lovelock, and thus closer to the 447 exit off of I80 is Fernley, NV, a two-exit city with some great things to offer. More information about what’s available in Fernley can be found here:

GERLACH CAR WASH

Ranger Keeper writes to tell us:

“The annual Gerlach Car Wash will be happening again this year on Snday and Monday of Exodus. All the proceeds go to the Gerlach Schools. This supports our athletic program throughout the year. All of the student athletes (along with parents and teachers) come out with the hopes of washing many a playa-dusty vehicle.

The Car Wash is located on the corner of Main Street in Gerlach. Thanks for supporting the local community!

~Ranger Keeper, Teacher, Gerlach Schools”

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

PURCHASE WATER IN GERLACH

Ranger Keeper also writes:

“The Gerlach GID, our local town governing body, will be selling potable water for filling up RVs and water tanks of any size starting August 27th. We will have ample filling stations in front of the community center, with directional signs located as you enter town on Main Street. Our rates this year will be comparable with Reno at .50/gallon up to 100 gallons, .45/gallon for sales above 100 and less than 200 gallons, and .40/gallon for sales larger than 200 gallons.

This decision has been made in an attempt to keep our water rates reasonable for the citizens of Gerlach. We have a top notch water treatment plant here, but due to the small size of our town, our 150 residents must pay for the maintenance of an entire water system. We want to provide a town resource to the participants of Burning Man, and we think this will save you money in addition to helping our town. Water weighs 8 lbs per gallon, and by buying your water in Gerlach you will avoid paying fuel costs to transport your water from Reno or even farther.

Our hours of operation will be 12 pm – 10 pm with a person available on-call when closed. We are ONLY accepting cash payments as we do not have a credit/debit machine. PLEASE pass this information on to any regional lists you may be on! Our office can be contacted at 775-557-2601 or gerlachgid (at) yahoo (dot) com with any questions or to arrange fill-ups prior to August 27th.

~Ranger Keeper, Treasurer, Gerlach GID”

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

EMPIRE STORE

The Empire Store is a smaller store about the size of your average convenience store … it’s not a gigantic grocery store. If you’re going to need to stock up on TONS of stuff for your Burn, you’ll want to do that shopping in Reno. But the Empire Store is a great resource for the essentials you need, especially the “D’oh! I forgot toothpaste,” or “We can’t do the project without that spatula!” kind of thing, or to pick up a last 6-pack of beer. Plus, they have ice cream, which will look like EDIBLE SOLID GOLD about the time you’re rolling through Empire, believe us.

Thanks to our friends at the Empire Store for their efforts to serve our participants!
