{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

Greetings again from Black Rock City, NV! The weather has ranged from beautiful to big ass white-out and back again (currently: gorgeous and warm), and the artists and theme camps are starting to flow into the city en masse … it’s coming togetherrrrr!

The art installations are really looking incredible this year. We’re all pretty blown away by what we’re seeing, and we’re super lucky to have the opportunity to go out and check in on the artists as they’re working, keeping up on their progress. The effort they’re putting in is seriously unbelievable.

The rest of the build is proceeding apace – with weekend weather in flux, we’re hammering fast to complete projects today and repair tents and structures that got a bit tousled yesterday. (Updates on the shifts in weather and the crew’s progress are coming daily – sometimes twice a day – from Curley: http://blog.burningman.com/building-brc/closer-and-closer/ .)

In this JRS, we have some last minute news and stuff, and then a full-blown collection of the art you’ll see on playa, as well as art tours and more. Check it out.

And one thing we’d like to stress on the subject of art: unless you made it, don’t vandalize the artwork. Yeah, we know “it’s Burning Man, man … don’t harsh my mellow … it’s my creative expression, man.” Yeah, no. Messing with somebody else’s art just isn’t cool … unless they expressly imply that their piece is meant to be messed with. Having created art, this Rabbit is here to tell ya: it really sucks when somebody else vandalizes your work. So for reals, be cool. Don’t.

We want to express our sincere appreciation to all the hard-working artists out there who are working their butts off to create something beautiful, from their hearts, for our community to enjoy. You guys are the best. Thank you.

As for the rest of you, still to depart for BRC, drive safely and we’ll see you soon!!

OOPS. AGAIN. TICKETS ARE SOLD AT THE GATE UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2 – YES SEPTEMBER 2

This is what happens when you try and write when you’re on playa, and your brain is being pummeled by heat and dehydration. You print two typos in two consecutive editions of the JRS. Sigh. OK, so let’s try this again, shall we?

Tickets are being sold at the Black Rock City Box Office until September 2nd at midnight. They take cash and credit cards, but no personal checks. Tickets are $360 at the gate.

You can also still buy tickets at our walk-in outlets until Saturday, August 28th.

Now, what did we screw up this time?

MOZE’S ART PREVIEW

John Mosbaugh has once again published his annual art preview, highlighting some notable pieces that will be on playa in 2010. Here it is, enjoy:

THE ARTERY

The ARTery is the on-playa headquarters for Burning Man’s art department. To learn about all that they do (and don’t do), see:

http://www.burningman.com/installations/artery.html

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

ART TOURS

The ARTery offers a variety of art tours. Pick the one that’s right for you:

Guided Art Tours
For those in need (e.g. you can’t get around to the artwork yourself on foot or by bike), there are art tours that depart on a bus daily from District Everywhere, right next to the ARTery. These limited seats are first come, first served, and first preference given to those in need. Tours are Tuesday – Friday at 11am. Tickets are handed out the day before the tour (Monday for Tuesday’s tour, Tuesday for Wednesday’s tour, etc.) at noon at District Everywhere. Check in at the ARTery for additional details and tour availability.

Self-Guided Paper Tours
The ARTery also provides written tours that you can pick up at the ARTery, and create your own tour! Lead a tour with your friends … take ’em around in a pack of bikes, or do a tour with your Mutant Vehicle.

Audio Art Tours
The ARTery’s Jim Tierney (aka Anarchist Cowboy) has once again produced an awesome audio art tour, featuring great behind-the-scenes information about many of the Honorarium art installations. You can find the MP3s here, which you can download to your computer or iPod to bring with you:

IBURN IPHONE APP FOR BURNING MAN 2010

Check out the new iBurn iPhone App, featuring a Black Rock City map and event guide. It’s free and open source. Note that it won’t have theme camp locations until the BRC gates open on Sunday (it’s a policy thing).

SOMEPLACE: A HELPFUL IPHONE APP

Omino writes:

“You know that feeling when you take your friend over to see that amazing 40 foot tall thing with the fire and strobe lights and you just can’t miss it and… where the heck was it? I’m sure it was right here?

So I wrote a *free* iPhone App called SOMEPLACE to help with that. Just log a point with a snapshot, choose a symbol, and start to build up your personal map. Select a reasonable point as the ‘Map Center’. It does NOT need network access, which is kind of the whole point. (But it does need iOS 4, and rather a lot of battery juice, and works best if your iPhone has GPS and a magnetic compass — 3gs and 4.)

Just search the App Store for ‘someplace’.”

WANT TO BRING YOUR ART TO THE PLAYA THIS YEAR?

If you haven’t registered your art yet, and you want to bring it to the playa, you still can! Download and fill out the art registration PDF, and bring it with you to the Artery, found on the Esplanade & 6:30. Here’s the PDF:

BLACK ROCK WINE CELLAR OFFERS REFRIGERATION

Nice. Vintner writes to offer:

“The Black Rock Wine Cellar is once again opening its subterranean wine storage facility for public use – if you have a precious bottle or two you would like to store in our refrigerated facility, swing on by and speak to our sommelier. In addition to storage, we look forward to hosting the occasional tasting, in which we share some of our own special selections. If you would like to participate in any capacity, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Light and heat,

Vintner

CREATE “ART FOR THE NEXT DISASTER” WITH BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS

Burners Without Borders invites all Black Rock City artists to stop by… and make art “for the next disaster”. BwB (3:30 and Esplanade) will have art materials. Burning Man artists can create signs that will make their appearances three weeks into the next earthquake, hurricane, or tornado. At that point, people need help. Shock has warn off and that’s when art can do some real good– putting color and beauty into a tragic landscape; bringing hope to people in desperate need. We’ll make the signs in advance and put them where they count later on. We will also have daytime music to create the vibe… and to record music for later download from BwB’s web site (www.burnerswithoutborders.org). We are also making swag for use by Burners Without Borders around the world. Silkscreening in the shade. Join us 12-5 every day.

JOHN CURLEY PHOTO EXHIBITION AT THE MANSONIAN INSTITUTE GALLERY

Our friend Peter Hogg is creating beautiful large-scale prints of John Curley’s photos and displaying them during Burning Man at the Mansonian Institute Camp, located at 6:30 and Esplanade. Look for the large vinyl Burning Man infographic on the bus. This Rabbit has seen a few of them, and they’re stunning. Come see!
