Before we start, we’d like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to our longtime volunteer Evren “Edub” Cakir, who has been working on the Jackrabbit Speaks team for years now, helping with people’s subscribe and unsubscribe requests and more. It’s a challenging, time-consuming and largely thankless (read: a user’s automated unsub request to a computer doesn’t work and YOU get called names for it) behind-the-scenes job, and Edub has always done it with unbridled enthusiasm and a big smile on his face. As we’ve now passed this role onto another staffer (wait for it …), Edub is finally OFF THE HOOK!
Thank you Edub!! We love you, brother.
So with that, we’d like to formally welcome Patrick Ford (aka Senator) to the JRS family. Patrick’s been a member of Burning Man’s Communications Team since last summer, and he’ll be taking on the JRS administration role, as well as helping to answer the myriad questions that get sent in to the Jackrabbit throughout the year. And trust us, we abuse him plenty, so you don’t have to! SPEAKING OF BURNING MAN ART: KICKIN’ BUTT, TAKIN’ NAMES
The art of Burning Man is seriously kicking some tail here in San Francisco.
For starters, the Black Rock Arts Foundation has helped manifest the installation of Marco Cochran’s iconic “Bliss Dance” sculpture on Treasure Island, smack dab in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. It’s … STUNNING. If you live in the Bay Area or find yourself swinging through on a visit, do check it out.
Also, a little bird tells us that the Raygun Gothic Rocketship might just be staying in its current spot by San Francisco’s Ferry Building through 2012, so that the thousands of folks coming to watch the America’s Cup can enjoy it.
Finally, two of Karen Cusolito’s flower sculptures (part of the Infinitarium project from 2010) are now installed on Market Street, right across from UN Plaza. More info: http://bit.ly/lgOJGh

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE OF NAMES – 2010-2011 BURNERS LOST
Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition continues to honor those people who have affected our Burning experiences and who participated in creating Burning Man. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year’s Remembrance Plaque.

RENO BIKE PROGRAMS – TIME TO GET ON IT!
There are two popular bike programs in the Reno area that sell or rent reliable and affordable bikes especially for life on the playa that are now taking reservations. To best meet the growing demand every year for this playa essential from these loving bike shops, it is best to let you know about what they have to offer earlier than the Resource issue is available, so you too can get that “Can I still get a bike in Reno?” issue out of the way among other summer preparations for your adventures to Black Rock City. (Note: One of our other longtime local bike rental purveyors for globe-trotters, Rat’s Bikes, is already out of bikes for 2011. Be sure to look out for his announcement here in the JRS in early 2012).
–Kiwanis Bike Program–
If you are in need of a bike great for the playa and close to Reno, reserving one from the Kiwanis Bike Program comes highly recommended. Kiwanis has a huge variety of bicycles ranging from $30-$50, and all purchases support the repairs and donation of bikes for at-risk kids in the Reno area. Moreover, if you return your bike to Kiwanis on your way home from the playa, they love it — they’ll refurbish and reuse it! Reserve your bike now as they go fast. The shop is open 9am-9pm (PST) daily, the week before and during Burning Man, to pick up your reserved bike or to pick out a bike from those still available before moving on to Black Rock City. SUBMIT YOUR DESIGNS FOR THE 2011 BURNING MAN STICKERS
Hello dusty-hearted friends and fellow playa-schwag-ophiles!
Lost in a memory of past playa experience, staring blankly at your water bottle and the fun, funky sticker you received when you rolled through the Greeter’s Station last year tacked lovingly to it? Looking forward to remembering this year’s Rite of Passage for years to come?
What better way to remember your great experiences on playa than with eye catching, sticky, sticker schwag?! Participate in the artfully affecting playa ephemera through submitting YOUR design to our annual Sticker Contest.
This is the official call for designs for the 2011 Burning Man stickers. Your design could be the one passed out with the materials you receive as you pass through the Greeters Station upon entering Black Rock City. Other designs will become official sticker schwag passed out on and off the playa throughout the year.
Things to know:
1. Your sticker designs can vary in size from 2.25″x5.5″ to 3″x3″. Round designs must measure 3″ in diameter.
2. Please incorporate both the name Burning Man and the year 2011 into your design.
3. Unfortunately, sticker designs are limited to only TWO or THREE colors. Please design accordingly.
4. Round stickers are given priority for winning the coveted “Gate Sticker” spot, going out to ALL Black Rock Citizens.
5. Whichever type of sticker tickles your fancy (or maybe you’re very ticklish and want to enter several designs), remember there IS a theme, and we like stickers that attempt to use the theme. Read up on the Rites of Passage theme (http://www.burningman.com/art_of_burningman/bm11_theme.html)!
6. Wondering how to get your sticker designs to us? Please send either a .pdf file OR (preferably) a color separated Adobe Illustrator (.ai) file to Stickers (at) BurningMan (dot) com. BWB: SKILLED VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN PERU TO HEAD UP BIODIESEL REACTOR PROJECT
Are you mechanically minded? Do you have experience or an interest in making Biodiesel? Burners without Borders is in need of a volunteer to head up our very successful Biodiesel Operation in Pisco, Peru. This is one of our flagship projects in Pisco, and the funds raised from the sale of this fuel goes right back in to supporting our programs. If you can commit up to two months and can get yourself to Peru, we will provide room and board.

LOS ANGELES BURNERS GO BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS AT LOCAL SCHOOL
We’re proud to share this post from LA Regional Athena, who wrote to the Regional List to tell the story of LA burners stepping up their game, Burners Without Borders style:
“Four weeks ago we got involved in a community garden effort at George Washington Carver middle school in South Central LA. Since getting involved we have changed the dialog of the (school’s) garden to permaculture and curriculum integration. They went from expensive pavers to free urbanite (broken up concrete). They agreed to change the trash cans in the school from one can to 3 – recycling, compost, and landfill. And will be posting the “What Goes Where” signs around the school to educate the kids. LNT will become a principle of the school as well. The Math, Science, and History classes of each grade will have plots they are in charge of. Their education will be incorporated into the garden. This will be a fully sustainable organic food garden. Which means they will now know where there food comes from. And it will be fun. One plot will be a pizza plot growing all the ingredients you need to make a pizza, another plot will be the salsa plot, and yet another about plants who work well together and thrive when they are in close proximity.
AND – we are setting up an after school art program starting in the fall called “Trash to Treasure.” Where the students will collect otherwise ‘landfill’ destined trash and make it into art. All art will be collaborative amongst large groups of students and sometimes entire classes. These are large 7′ to 10′ pieces or totems which will be sold at a gala on campus at the end of every school year. The funds will go back into the garden and into the arts program for the school.”

“Arthur Graham is looking for volunteers to help him kick off an experiment in collective writing to be conducted out at Burning Man this year — First-Degree Burns: Transmissions From the Playa.
If you are A) attending Burning Man 2011, B) arriving on or before Monday, August 29, and C) would like to call first dibs on one of the “transmitter” notebooks that will be circulating around the Man all week, then please contact Arthur Graham at arthur.graham.pub (at) gmail (dot) com with your name and mailing address, and he will see that you receive one while supplies last!
The books are to be freely inscribed upon and then passed on. Lucky burners who end up with the battered and dusty tomes at the end of the week will be tasked with returning them to the address provided. Those that make it back to Arthur Graham in one piece (and even those in multiple pieces) will have their pages scanned into the 100% FREE eBook he plans to distribute once he’s had a chance to cobble everything together.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS: THE TABA TURBINE PROJECT IN RENO
We thought somebody out there in our community would jump at this opportunity, so we thought we’d pitch it out there. Here ya go:
REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS – Repurposing of Materials from The Taba Turbine Project, Reno, Nevada
DEADLINE: JUNE 10, 2011
ELIGIBILITY: The Project is OPEN to all local, regional, and national artists with experience in public art projects.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A public art project which creates new artwork for public display within the City of Reno created from the aluminum and metal tubing originally installed at the Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority titled “Taba Turbine”. The artist(s) selected should have demonstrated experience working in public locations subject to vandalism. Artwork selected should be based on a 20 year life expectancy and must not require electricity or water. This project will be placed in one or more locations in Reno. One piece will be required to remain in the City’s Public Art Collection while others will be displayed for a period not to exceed three years. Materials available for repurposing are: seven -12”x12”x35’ hollow square steel beams; +/- 35 -8’x2” hollow round steel posts;
SPECIFICATIONS:
The artist will design, fabricate and install one of-a-kind sculptures for temporary and/or permanent installation in Reno. The City reserves the right to withdraw the RFP if no suitable proposal is received or if unforeseen circumstances arise.
BUDGET:
Project Budget is estimated to be $ 20,000.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
• Current resume detailing professional artistic accomplishments and references from past public art projects, including awards if applicable
• Digital images of relevant work (min. 3, max. 10) Images must be labeled, numbered according to slide list and placed on a CD. Digital images should be 72 DPI; vertical should not exceed 525 pixels high, horizontal should not exceed 700 pixels wide.
• Image Inventory – image number, title, media, size, date, location, description of work, including awards if applicable
• Project Approach (including maintenance)- limited to one page, type written, artist’s name, phone and return address
• Graphic of Project proposal.
• Project Budget (design and materials).
• Self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage for the return of slides and graphics.

BURNING MAN FLESHES OUT ITS “SUPPORT A PROJECT” FUNDRAISING GUIDELINES
As we’ve learned more about how the fundraising process is working in our community, Burning Man has ironed out some wrinkles in the process, ensuring that everybody’s being properly served … including our community’s guiding principles.
To that end, we’ve updated our fundraising guidelines. If you plan to request fundraising assistance through our Support a Project process, you’ll want to read Will Chase’s (yes, yours truly) post about it in the Burning Blog:

COLLABORATE! CONTRIBUTE ART COMPONENTS TO THE TEMPLE OF TRANSITION!
“Love art? Love somebody? Love the Temple?
Two weeks into construction, The Temple of Transition is already becoming a wildly collaborative project pulling together a crew of all kinds of Burners from all over the world, and now we’d like to involve even more of the community in creating this magical, sacred environment for one another. We are all about collaboration, but we realise that not everyone can come out here to Reno to spend the summer building – so we’ve created a way for you to get involved from wherever you are! We’ve got a bunch of special Temple components that we would love, utterly love, for the wider community to build & bring or send to Reno or to the playa, where they will be lovingly incorporated into the Temple. SEARCHING FOR STAINED GLASS SCRAPS FOR THE TEMPLE OF TRANSITION
Add your bit to this year’s Temple! Doug writes:
“You know you’ve been hoarding them for years. All those leftover bits and pieces of pretty glass shards from your stained glass projects. Odd shapes, just a little too small, or perhaps not the perfect color to go with the next project. Thinking, “I can’t just throw these away!” Now, five years later, 17 plastic bins full of broken glass are collecting dust under your bed, in your garage or in your basement.
We have a MUCH better place for them to collect dust: The big arched windows of Temple of Transition will be hosting “curtains of glass”. We’ll take ALL of your leftover bits and pieces, large and small, and create something beautiful to behold.

THE OTIC OASIS: A WILDERNESS OUTPOST & CIVIC SANCTUARY
Periodically, we will highlight a particular project that piques our interest, like this project, which we’ve chosen to feature here in the JRS because it represents a new experiment in art placement — a quiet meditative zone for BRC:
“Please join us in helping fund the launch of this necessary, historic and brand new civic initiative for Burning Man 2011. As the Burning Man population has grown, the 24/7 cacophony of sound and music has filled all the remote spaces of Black Rock City. This year, in a zone free of motorized vehicles and loud amplified music, lights, and energy – the walk-in camping area of BRC – we are building the OTIC OASIS, an incredible wilderness outpost comprised of a 35-foot geometric cluster structure that provides shade, shelter, comfort and individualized spaces for quiet and contemplation. If embraced by the community, the civic structure will return each year.
On Kickstarter, there is a detailed outline of this vision, and a rendering of this amazing structure, that hopefully you will find compelling enough to support. There is a sliding scale of donations that can appeal to anyone’s pocket book from $1 up to $10,000. In the spirit of “it takes a village” and the micro payment model, just know that any level of donation truly does move the needle and puts the OTIC OASIS one step closer to a reality. “You must bring everything with you to survive the pic-i-nic”
*At least 12 oz beverage per adult, per hour.
*Enough grillable food for you and your group.
*Layered clothing that preferably sparkles.
*A good folding camp chair or picnic blanket.
*’Leave No Trace’ garbage bags.
*Reusable cup.
*Sunscreen.
*Common sense, an open mind, and a positive, playful attitude.

NOLA CORE PROJECT 2011: CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

This year at the Burning Man festival in northeastern Nevada, 24 regional groups will build large sculptures to form a “Circle Of Regional Effigies” (CORE) around the central Man figure. This is the largest group art project yet attempted by the Burning Man organization, and the first to involve so many regional groups. The project was announced in February and groups around the country and world are racing to build large-scale art with three months to go.
New Orleans does not have an organized burner community, so an ad hoc group has come together to design, fund and produce an ambitious project to be part of this amazing event. We hope that this effort will bring together New Orleans’ vibrant but fragmented burner groups and lay the foundation for an ongoing regional arts organization. Our effigy, “Mama Nola” is a 20’ tall Voodoo doll rising up over the playa, surrounded by an intimate room housing a shrine, an art gallery and an interpretive museum.
Now is the time for all New Orleans and Louisiana Burners to step up and get involved in this truly amazing project. We have a design, a plan, scheduled meetings and events, and a good chance of making something really amazing while having tons of fun. We need You, your energy and your skills! Mama Nola: Call for ART!
We’re looking for donations of art to fill our effigy, Mama Nola. We will sell a few items in gallery shows before the event, and pieces that are not burned with the effigy (your choice) will fund future projects. Art themes are: Voodoo, New Orleans, Spirituality (esp. Animist & Catholic icons), Day of the Dead, and Rebirth.
