**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

We’re back with another regular edition of the JRS, and this one in particular is rather historic and kinda surreal, actually … Yes, for the first time in our 25-year history, tickets for Burning Man have sold out. Yes, really. It’s kind of blowing our minds too. More information below.

In other news, today’s JRS is (as is de rigueur this time of year) packed to the brim with opportunities to participate in various folks’ on-playa activities. Remember, we’re happy to include YOURS in our listing, so send ’em to jackrabbitspeaks (at) burningman (dot) com and use POST REQUEST as your subject line.

In addition to the JRS, you should really be keeping an eyeball on the Burning Blog these days, including Halcyon’s helpful and entertaining Tips and Tricks videos: http://blog.burningman.com/author/jstyn/

… and Caveat Magister’s insightful and hilarious investigations into the dynamics of Burner culture: http://blog.burningman.com/author/cmagister/

If you’ve got somebody in your fold who’s Burner-curious, the blog is a great place to send ’em to dip their toe into the culture.

The Man burns in 40 days (OMGWTFBBQ?)! Read on, people …

TICKETS FOR BURNING MAN 2011 ARE SOLD OUT

Tickets for Burning Man 2011 have sold out. For the first time in 25 years of holding the Burning Man event, we have had to cut off ticket sales before the event. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which oversees the Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area, requires us to manage growth in line with the previous year’s population in order to comply with our use permit. As a result, Burning Man has exercised its oft-stated right to cap ticket sales.

Tickets will NOT be sold at the Burning Man Gate, nor at Walk-In Outlets. If you don’t have a ticket, please, do NOT show up at the Gate. If you choose to purchase tickets from a third party, please take precautions to ensure their authenticity before you purchase them to avoid counterfeits and scams. If you are selling your ticket, we strongly encourage you to sell it at face value, or better yet, gift it! Information on how to buy and sell third-party tickets more safely can be found here: http://tickets.burningman.com/#buysell.

For those considering venturing out to Black Rock City without a ticket to “try your luck” purchasing one at or near the entrance to Burning Man, we ask that you do NOT do so, for your own safety and the well-being of the surrounding communities. The Black Rock Desert is an extremely remote, inhospitable environment with limited resources, minimal facilities, and few camping opportunities in the vicinity. You will NOT be allowed to camp overnight anywhere near the event site, and the nearest campgrounds are over an hour’s drive away.

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

WHERE CAN I SEEK OUT PEOPLE SELLING THEIR TICKETS OR OFFER MINE TO SELL?

We DO NOT post requests for people seeking or offering tickets in the Jackrabbit Speaks … you can find people selling their tickets, or sell your tickets here:

The ePlaya:
http://eplaya.burningman.com

The Burning Man Facebook Page:
www.facebook.com/burningman

Craigslist:
www.craigslist.org

eBay:
www.ebay.com

Your local regional list:
http://regionals.burningman.com.

BUT THAT SAID … please please read up on how to avoid buying counterfeits, and don’t buy from scalpers!

http://tickets.burningman.com/#buysell

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

COUNTERFEITS SPOTTED IN LA: AVOID SCAMMERS AND SCALPERS

A nefarious character has created some counterfeit Burning Man tickets by taking a real ticket and photocopying it, using some holographic film in an attempt to reproduce our security foil. The fake ticket has NO embossing (on a real ticket, you can feel the raised embossing with your fingers), and thus feels flat. On the back, the second bar code and price levels are covered up by the holographic film.

The serial code to watch out for is: TWVTO53W 03703

A person named Mike might be selling this ticket. It’s been reported to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, so if you get scammed contact their fraud division and give them all the info you have on the seller.

Be careful out there, and learn how to sell a ticket, buy a ticket from a third party, and recognize a counterfeit:

http://tickets.burningman.com/#buysell

Finally, if you come across a scalper selling tickets over face value, please don’t buy them … we need to come together as a community to discourage the scalping of Burning Man tickets. Only buy tickets at face value! We encourage gifting first, face-value sales second, and scalping NEVER.

Thank you!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT BLACK ROCK CITY DELIVERIES

If you must receive a delivery from the outside world into Black Rock City, be sure that the driver can get into the city, and find you or your camp. To streamline pre-arranged deliveries, a Vendor Pass system was introduced in 2010, and is again available for the 2011 event. Parties requiring delivery can purchase a Vendor Pass. A Vendor Pass offers some advantages over a ticket including an early arrival option, multiple deliveries, and expedited access. Remember, everybody entering Black Rock City is required to have a ticket.

For more information on the Vendor Pass as well as general delivery guidelines, visit:

D.A.’S PLAYA RESTORATION QUICK TIP #3 – LANDSCAPE RAKES

“Hey Gang! Keep Black Rock City beautiful! Use a landscape rake to pull MOOP up to the surface and separate it from the loose playa dust! MOOP often lies just beneath the surface of all that dust that has been kicked up over the course of the event, especially after dust storms. Comb a path through the MOOPy playa with your landscape rake. Walk the combed path and pick up all the debris that pops up. Remember to make things simpler by calling for a few helping hands to MOOP the debris area. If the area is really big, designate a grid and do a line sweep. Note: raking on the playa has been known to have a zen-like beach comber effect on the participant. Handle with care.

http://moopmap.blogspot.com/2009/07/moop-method-use-rake-for-visibility.html

Thanks for leaving no trace:) see you on the playa!

Playa Restoration Manager”

ADD YOUR CAMP TO THE BURNER MAP

A Burner named Morgasm (together with his friend Micah Daigle) took it upon himself to write a nifty little Facebook App that lets Burners share their BRC camp location with their friends. LOVE IT! Got a Facebook account? Add yours …

And if you don’t swing the Facebook way (we understand), you can also add your camp location to this map:

CAMP CONVIVIALITY IS HERE TO HELP

Engage snark on my mark. Aaaand mark. The Conviviality Cabal writes:

“Seeing all the posts in the last JRS about radical collaboration and our communal nature, Camp Conviviality would like to throw its hat in the ring.

Camp Conviviality seeks to provide logistical/assembly/etc. assistance to camps of all scales without all that booking and shit. Members of Camp Conviviality will be all over the playa, willing to offer help to people who might otherwise use a costly, energy-sucking piece of machinery. Want to load a kegerator onto your art car and can’t be arsed to book a forklift? Just yell “Hey! Can anyone help me get this kegerator onto this art car”, and members, friends, and agents of Camp Conviviality will hear you and spring into action (they’ll also help you drink the beer too if you’d like)! I bet you didn’t know that rabbit in a tutu has 50′ of 1/4″ double-braid nylon in her fanny pack. Yeah!

Anyone is welcome to join Camp Conviviality; you don’t even have to camp with us (in fact, you can’t; we don’t have a site). Just be on the playa, be handy, be helpful, and look forward to trying to pull things off by hand that people would normally use a 2-ton boom crane for! RAWR! (Or as some crusty old-timers might be tempted to put it: be a REAL burner.)”

EYES ON ART VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT & SPOTTER DRIVE

Eyes on Art (EoA) is looking for people to volunteer for a night or two or the whole event!

EoA’s mission is to patrol the playa starting build week and throughout the event looking for unlit Art and other potential safety issues. As part of Burning Man’s Art Department, we help provide temporary (overnight) lighting for art projects that need help.

It’s a fun way to see the playa at night and be of service to the City!!! If your camp wants to volunteer as a group for a shift we would welcome you!! Art car roaming the playa all night? We want you!!

Please contact ASAP: Dubble at dubble (at) burningman (dot) com to get started.

THEME CAMPS WANTED TO PARTICIPATE IN FEED THE ARTISTS PROGRAM

Help keep this valuable, Burner-driven playa resource going! Colonel Angus writes:

“Attention Theme Camps – Soup’s On, Baby!

Join with Feed the Artists in this year’s Rites of Cabbage as we feed hungry artists on the playa.

Break bread and commune with artists this year by offering a heart-felt meal to hungry and appreciative artists. You know, those hard-working, butt-busting burner artists that create wonders on the playa would just love a meal from you during setup AND/OR burn week. The gift of a nourishing meal creates community, and will make a huge impact not only on the artists, but also on YOU, their hosts. You’ll have the opportunity to meet and get to know incredible people in an intimate setting, learn about their art projects, and possibly make some new life-long friends!

Hosting meals can be done by Theme Camps or any group or individual willing and able to perform this gracious act! Yes, YOU can cook up an incredible gift by hosting some amazing artists for a meal — it’s easy, it’s fun, and it’s sure to be a highlight of your Burn.

Here’s how it works:

1. Go to feedtheartists.net and register to host an artist group.
2. Once you register go to the invite page which can be accessed from your Theme Camps’ event page. There will be be a link that says: “Invite more artists to dinner”.
3. Choose the artist(s) that you want to invite and fill in the ‘dinner time’ field for each day you are inviting.
4. Click “send invites” at the bottom.

Once invited, the artist(s) will receive an invitation, with your contact information, which they have to confirm. Once confirmed, you’ll receive a confirmation, with all the artist group’s contact information, and you guys can then contact each other to work out all the details.

When you arrive on-playa, check-in at the FtA camp, so that we can make sure everything is still a go. We will also have an on-playa reservation system, if you decide you want to invite additional artists or add additional nights, and we’ll be providing other support services. If you have any questions about the site, you can email webmaster (at) feedtheartists (dot) net for help Rites of Cabbage – Feed the Artists is taking it to a new level this year!

Last year, 50 theme camps fed over 1500 meals to grateful artists, and this year, we want to increase the number of theme camps participating to 100!!!!

We incubated FtA at Burning Man, which was the ideal setting to develop a program that strengthens community connections by bringing people together to celebrate the original art form: preparation, service, and sharing of food. The program has caught on like wildfire, and we’re excited to now be fulfilling our vision of moving FtA out to the regional Burning Man events, with Transformus being the first Regional to host their own FtA program. In fact, this program has far reaching implications beyond the playa and Burning Man artist groups — imagine Feed the Teachers, Feed the Firemen, Feed the Disaster Relief Workers — you get the idea. Radical Collaboration at its best!!! That’s where we’re headed! And we want you all to join us!

So register and invite, today, and if you feel so inclined, please check out our online art auction at http://stores.ebay.com/Feed-the-Artists, and our Kickstarter campaign at http://kck.st/qBgzci.

Much Love,
Colonel Angus”

HIGH PRIESTESS SEEKS YOUR JOURNALS FOR THE TEMPLE

Pretty cool idea …

“High Priestess here – This is a shout out for JOURNALS – those personal musings you have been writing for years! Integrated into the Temple this year with be The Library of Journals – check it out on FB, or the Temple website Blog will have something soon. During the week at BRC bring your journals to the Temple, in each of the six Temples – there will be a place for your journals in one of the six corners. Each Temple focuses on a different life passage – Birth, Growth, Union, Decay and Death. The central temple is Gratitude. The journals are there for the community to read – it’s a Library after all! However if you feel too private or exposed – you can bind your private musings up and make them in-accessible. All journals need to be delivered to the Temple by you or a friend of yours.”

BLACK ROCK CENSUS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

The Black Rock Census is now recruiting volunteers for on-playa shifts!

Basics:

During the week, we need 2 volunteers from 9:30am-1:30pm every day for census form processing, and 10 volunteers on pre-burn Sunday/Monday and postburn Sunday for census setup/breakdown. More details about the shifts are below.

Contact:

Please email Steven “Indiana” Crane (stevoc (at) stanford (dot) edu) if you are interested in any of the shifts described in this post. You’ll then be emailed a collaborative spreadsheet to sign up. It is fine to request a shift with a friend, or to sign up solo to meet a new friend! Let me know that you’re generally interested in helping even if you can’t commit to a particular shift ahead of time.

More info:

The Census Camp has been administering the Black Rock Census for eleven years as part of the Burning Man Organization, and our volunteer team works year-round to craft, collect, count, and compile the census and its results. Last year we collected 12,500 forms (!) which are used by the BM org to create the best burn possible for everybody; by Burners to get a broader, more unbiased perspective on who comes to and what goes down on the playa; and even bona fide scientific research. (Past results are available in the afterburn reportsbit.ly/nTDTQ0). And we can’t do all this without some extra help on-playa. This is where you come in.

Daily form-processing volunteers will work with our team in Center Camp as we merrily work our way through the forms as they come in. Form-processing volunteers will:

— restock the Cafe and Playa Info census kiosks
— retrieve completed census forms from the Cafe
— process forms (placing numbered stickers on collected forms and properly group them) in the shade or indoors at Census Camp (adjacent to Media Mecca, across the street from the Café).

Perfect for: Those who love organization and efficiency, or enjoy some simple, methodical, meditative form processing, or particularly enjoy stacking, counting, numbering, and bunching forms.

Setup/Breakdown volunteers will help build and decorate the camp and the Census Wagon art car, load up vehicles for our “trap line” of cross-playa census distribution, and other tasks to get the census up and running.

Perfect for: those who like making things look great, who have always wanted to do some work with an art car. Some height and/or muscle would be helpful, but not necessary!

For more details, questions, and to sign up for a shift, contact Steven ‘Indiana’ Crane stevoc (at) stanford (dot) edu.

CALLING ALL BOAT AND FISH ART CARS — TO THE PIER!

The folks who are building the awesome Pier art project (http://bit.ly/pki1GN) write:

“Calling all boat and fish art cars! Inviting all sea-faring passengers, mermaids, life-guards, mates, pirates, damsels, and captains! Join The Pier art installation for a playa regatta on Wednesday August 31st from 5-7pm. Meet at the 12:00 side of the Man and hop aboard as we parade through town, ending alongside the 300-foot long Pier for a celebratory victory party. Dock your boat, don your fancy costume, and bring your champagne. We’ll be celebrating til the bewitching hour.”

PARTICIPATE IN SUNRISE CHINESE SKY LANTERN LAUNCH AND PHOTO SHOOT

Way cool. Kimber writes:

“Hi, My name is Kimber and I am a photographer. I am organizing an art project/ photography opportunity which I need all the help I can get. I will be bring hundreds of Chinese sky lanterns. I would like to capture them being lit off at sunrise. I would like to do this later in the week when the festival is in full swing (thurs or fri or both). I need people who would like to light these lanterns off and be a part of my shoot. Anyone is welcome and bring your friends. I believe this will have the most impact and be most beautiful, the more people we can have lighting these lanterns off. Please contact me at kjauss@kjaussimagery if you would be interested in helping with this project so I can get you all the details a little closer to the festival.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing everyone on the Playa.”

WHAT’S IN A PLAYA NAME? FIND OUT!

Dilan writes:

“Playa Shakespeare (or Phakespeare) wants to know your playa name. Is it River Kleenex or Britney pap Smears? Oh no she di’int!!! Let’s find out what some of the most popular playa names are? Or on the flipside what are the most wonderful, wacky, wild monikers in Black Rock City?

Follow the link below with your playa name, plus if you’re feeling particularly inspired, how you came to dawn your name. In 2 weeks I’ll compile a complete list and send everyone an email with the results – who knows maybe you’ll end up running into each other out there. ON-PLAYA SCRABBLE

Scrabble! Brilliant idea! Sandy writes:

“Make yourself an EL wire letter before you get to the playa and join us for Scrabble Night on Wed, Aug 31, starting at 9 pm.

Imagine collecting dozens of new and old friends one night on the playa … together we go out and play Scrabble. Each of us has an EL-wire letter hanging in front. We mix and mingle to make words. It’s not like traditional Scrabble … it’s more like fun chaos. We have more than 40 letters (and peeps playing) for our on playa scrabble “game.”

We’ll meet at the corner of Esplanade and 6:30 and will be easy to spot with our lit-up letters!

If you want your EL letter to match what we’ve done, our letters are 13.5 inches high and 11 inches across and most are aqua-colored standard 2.3 mm wire. To keep it simple, we’ve used 4” zip ties to attach the wire to a plastic grid (in the needlepoint section of Michael’s and Jo-Ann’s and other crafty shops). Of course, feel free to make any damn letter you like and join us. This is a radically inclusive event!

Email BRCgidget (at) comcast (dot) net with any questions.”

CAMP DARK SPARKLE IS CALLING FOR MOLECULAR BIOLOGISTS

Not sure exACTly what kinda DNA samples they’re collecting here, but … Kristy writes:

“Extract your Inner Dark Sparkle (DNA)

Camp Dark Sparkle will help you acquire your own DNA and turn it into art that can be worn or gifted. Our camp challenges the citizens of BRC to find mystery and beauty in themselves and others, and celebrate the unique Dark Sparkle in all of us. DNA contains the instructions for making each of us unique and after this workshop you’ll walk away with a piece of your own DNA that you can both see and touch. Suitable for (supervised) children.

Is there a molecular biologist inside of you that is yearning to get out and get freaky on the playa? Well we have the perfect volunteer opportunity! We need genetic geeks for about 1.5 hours on Thursday to help our community learn how to extract their personal dark sparkle. Workshop will be 11:30am-1pm. If interested please email: (campdarksparkle (at) gmail (dot) com).

Yours truly,

Burlequesky geeks at Engagement and 9.

WORDSMITHING AT CAMP TSUNAMI

Beef Pies writes:

“I’m Beef Pies, and if you stopped by my Wordsmithing booth Camp Tsunami in the afternoons, there’s a chance that you let me create a hand-crafted word for you. If you did, I need to thank you from the bottom of my dusty heart, because what I thought would be fairly trivial and more than a little silly, turned out to be a beautifully rewarding experience. Your participation, along with the energy and support of all the amazing folks at Camp Tsunami (especially Widget, who gave it the green light), made it something I’ll not soon forget! I’m not able to make it out to the playa this year, but I’m already planning to return in 2012, and when I do, Wordsmithing will return with me, with improvements. The words I gave you, and your definitions for them as you gave them to me, can be found at http://playapatois.wordpress.com/ . Some of the words may prove very useful to you on the playa this year. Some of the words may be helpful in other realms. And if, as you’re unpacking all your dusty bins, and you find your Wordsmithing form in there, it’s never too late to e-mail your word and definition to me at BEEFPIESWORDS2010 (at) hotmail (dot) com (Ahem, to a few of my campmates…)”

THE BURNING BAND WANTS YOU!

Cynthia says:

“As your Burn plans approach the deadline, it’s time to remind you about joining the Burning Band! We’re the original, ad hoc, bunch of fun-loving ne’er-do-wells, our 16th year on the playa, playing parties, bars, weddings, parades, bars, dedications, and random raids. No sheet music! It’s all improv in Bb – “Yes, We Have No Bananas,” “Long Way to Tipperary,” “In Heaven There is No Beer,” and dozens more, all the way to “Amazing Grace” at the foot of The Man.

We have uniforms ! Dashing, gold-fringed, making everyone (talented or not) sound and look spiffy. So if you’re a back-slidden high school or college band/orchestra type with any kind of instrument, or if you just love creating a ruckus, we want your body. A number of us camp together – there may be limited space for a few more of you dedicated, wacky, musicians.

SUPPORT THE TEMPLE OF TRANSITION

Irish writes:

“As most of you know by now, your Temple crew has been working since late April in Reno , Nevada, to create the Temple of Transition project for Burning Man 2011: http://www.facebook.com/temple2011.

We are here because we believe in the value of the Temple to the people who will come, and write messages of hope, joy, fear and grief upon its walls. For the people who will share their souls and their memories and their dreams within its walls. For the people who will deposit tokens and objects and offerings here. For the children who will have naming ceremonies here, and the couples who will be married here. People will be bringing their thoughts, feelings and emotions from around the world out into the desert and into our Temple. Then after 7 days we will release it all in flames.

This is something that we believe in without hesitation or doubt.

We’ve already raised tens of thousands of dollars, due to the faith and generosity of hundreds of people. Yet we must ask one last time for your support. The Temple is virtually complete, but we need to move it from Reno to Black Rock City. Our first semi-trailer left Reno for Gerlach last Friday, but we have 24 more loads to send to BRC, and, once its there, we need a 90 ton crane to lift the upper sections into position, creating, for 1 week, the tallest temporary stick frame structure in the world and a fitting vessel for the wishes, hopes, and memories of our whole community.

You can gift as little as one dollar – every tiny contribution helps, and every bit of your contribution is used to build the Temple. NO ONE here gets paid (we even pay for our own food on-playa), EVERYONE on crew has given up a huge amount of time, energy, and resources to work on your behalf, and we all consider it the deepest honor to do so.

Please help by visiting the following page: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1098029929/the-temple-of-transition-burning-man-2011-0

Thank you all for listening – we, and the whole community, will really appreciate any donations you choose to make, however large or small.

Much Love, and see you in the Dust…
Your Temple crew 2011
