{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Greetings friends! We hope this finds you well, and enjoying yourselves as the year drifts into Fall. And we particularly hope that our friends along the eastern seaboard of the US are weathering Hurricane Sandy safely … sure sounds like a whopper.

But tell ya what, when disaster strikes, ain’t no place we’d rather be than with other self-reliant Burners who know how to gift their skills to those in need, cuz yeah, that’s how we roll. Stay safe out there, folks!

We’re excited to tell you that we passed the BLM inspection last week with flying colors, and it’s all thanks to YOU and your efforts to Leave No Trace … that AND the heroic efforts of the Playa Restoration crew that has now returned (albeit a bit dusty, bleary-eyed and somewhat disoriented) from their long days in the desert sun.

And just in time too, because guess what? It has already started to snow in Gerlach. Brrrrrr. We’re hoping for a big winter that will tamp down the playa surface for next year … but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

We’ve got a nice little JRS for you this time around, featuring some beautiful photography, videography, stories — AND A BRAND NEW SECTION called “Black Rock City Civics”, which will feature one tidbit per JRS about being an upstanding citizen of Black Rock City (How do community bikes work? What’s good generator etiquette? What are the limits of radical self-expression? Is wood MOOP? You get the idea). It promises to be illuminating for both first-timers and vets alike.

The Man burns in 305 days!

BURNING MAN PASSES BLM INSPECTION – 2013 IS ON!

We’re excited to report (and you’re likely excited to hear) that Burning Man has passed the BLM inspection of Black Rock City’s footprint on the Black Rock Desert. This means that Burning Man 2013 will happen, which is rad, of course.

Big thanks to all of YOU who did your part to Leave No Trace, and to the hard-working Playa Restoration crew (the largest ever) to tackle the task at hand: removing every last trace of Black Rock City.

WELL DONE EVERYBODY! Here’s the full story, as told by The Hun:

HELP REUNITE LOST CAMERAS WITH THEIR OWNERS

Turns out this has become a super fun annual tradition. Here’s Burning Man staffer Lee Anna Mariglia to tell you about it (including a highly-apropos video addendum):

“A small selection of images from the cameras turned into Playa Info’s Lost and Found at this year’s event have been uploaded to Flickr. Designed to help reunited cameras with their rightful owner, this project was first begun in 2010 with great success. We ask you and your friends to peruse these images and, if you recognize any friendly faces, please let those friendly face owners know that their camera has been found.

Detailed instructions for how one would reunite with their camera are found below each image.

To get started, check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/burning_man_lost_and_found/

Happy hunting, Lee Anna

WHAT’S UP WITH TICKETS FOR BURNING MAN 2013?

We know you’re wondering. Even as last year’s tickets were just going on sale, we began reviewing what worked, what didn’t, and ways we could improve the system for future years. We are listening to your feedback, collecting input from many voices and experts in the community, and are deep in the process of working out the plan for this year. These are not decisions we take lightly and there are many factors to consider, so please be patient as we determine the ticketing plan for 2013.

All announcements related to 2013 tickets will be included in future editions of the Jackrabbit, with full information posted on the web site … so stay tuned!

DO NOT MISS THIS: THE TEMPLE STORIES BLOG

Jon Mitchell and Sarah Russo spent 24 consecutive hours in this year’s Temple of Juno. They then took it upon themselves to create this Temple Stories blog, presenting participants’ tales from the Temple of Juno.

TWO VIDEOS FROM COOL ART INSTALLATIONS

Michael Emery sent us in this video of his piece “Nelumbo Nucifera” from Burning Man 2011. We’ll admit we didn’t get to see it at night, which now that we’re seeing this footage, we realize that was REALLY DUMB. Because it was cool. See:

http://vimeo.com/45848840

Second up, we have The Starlight Project from Burning Man 2012, by Erich Remash, Jeremy Berglund, Don Peterson and Chad Ingle. It’s a beautiful set of laser-cut icosahedrons (we’re admittedly a bit foggy on our advanced geometry, so we’re trusting the artists here) laid out in the formation of the constellation Orion. Which is cool.

See? Cool.

Call in Number (USA)- +1 209 255 1000 (ask us for an international #)

Following a brief history of the juvenile court, which was founded in Cook County, Illinois, Ryan ‘Searchl1te’ Keesling will discuss the ‘School-To-Prison Pipeline.’ We’ll look at the the concept of, implications of, and activism that is happening around the School-To-Prison Pipeline. Then introduce the poetry and artwork created by the incarcerated youth who participate in Free Write. As we interact with the student work, we’ll discuss how literacy and creative self-expression are used as tools by our incarcerated students to overcome the weighty obstacles each of them face.

About the BWB Tele-Salon

FULL CIRCLE: GEORGE POST’S BURNING MAN BOOK EVENT – SF – NOVEMBER 13

Our friend George Post writes to tell us of this event, supporting his new (and excellent, we must say) Burning Man photography book.

“ASMP NorCal presents a Burning Man book event on November 13th with George Post at Fort Mason in San Francisco.

Long-time playa photographer George Post first met the Burning Man at Fort Mason when the 1991 Man was erected and displayed on a floating barge tied between the piers on the Summer Solstice of that year. Following the ceremonial “Raising of the Man” and the generator-powered illumination of his neon nervous system, a film of the first (1990) Black Rock Desert burn was shown in the Cowell Theatre. Impressed by the photographic possibilities, George journeyed to the 1991 event and has continued to attend every year since.

Now the Northern California Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) presents a Fort Mason evening with George and his new book, “Dancing with the Playa Messiah,” in the Southside Theatre in Building D on November 13th. Social hour with light refreshments begins at 6pm, program to follow from 7-9pm. General Admission is $10 (free to ASMP General Members, $5 for ASMP Associate and Student Members).

George’s self-published book is a 216-page 12×12″ hardback with nearly 1000 color photographs from 21 consecutive years of documenting Burning Man. George will present a slideshow of images from his book and talk about the technical challenges of documenting Burning Man in a harsh, dusty desert environment; the changes brought about by the exponential growth of the event; and the transition from film photography to digital.

Autographed copies of the book will be available for purchase after the program.

Visit http://asmpnorcal.org/drupal/node/1456 for full details and ticket pre-sales. The Southside Theatre is a small 160-seat venue, so advance ticket purchase is recommended.

See more about George’s book at http://playa-messiah.com and https://www.facebook.com/PlayaMessiahPictureBook ”

FLAME EFFECTS FOR THE ARTIST – SEATTLE, WA – DECEMBER 1-2

DaveX, who manages all the fire safety on playa (bless his heart), writes:

“Our friends at the Hazard Factory and Ignition Northwest are our hosts as the next Flame Effects for the Artists class comes to Seattle Washington.

Attention all artists who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their art! This class is for you …

The workshop will be teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel based flame effects into your work. This class is great for the beginning fire artist and always has something new for the ‘expert’. Each one of these classes has drawn participants who have had all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions and projects that have been both fun and challenging.

This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating a small flame element into their work, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level.

The cost of this 2-Day class will be $150. Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm. Printed materials and a crappy but filling lunch of whatever cheap food we can get will be provided each day.

Joining Dave X in leading this class will be Eric Smith, Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas. We will also have displays and demonstrations of fire art from several local fire artists!

Check out some pics of past classes:

_______________________________________________________

Come and join us for this weekend to hang out with other fire artists and have a blast, no pun intended. We have room for 40 and will be taking walk up registration the day of the event, space permitting. Email your name to Fuelmaster (at) gmail (dot) com to reserve your spot.”

BRAND-BE-GONE! COVER YOUR LOGOS

One of Burning Man’s 10 Principles is “Decommodification”, by which our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. Black Rock City is the one place in the world where you don’t have to be inundated by advertising. In this spirit, participants have long been encouraged to cover, augment or mutate (usually to humorous effect) logos on their rental vehicles, et al. This practice seems to have languished in recent years, but we hope to see its revival in 2013 and beyond. Go forth and Decommodify!
