**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** We’re closing in fast on the holiday season, and we hope you’re weathering it well … family coming to town? Heading out on the road? Enjoying some quality down time? Going at it hard? However you’re doing it, we wish you the best.

In this JRS, we have your usual garden variety of Burning Man news, including information about Burning Man art grants, a little more illumination on 2013 ticket sales (Holiday Sale pre-registration ends tomorrow!), an update on the Bay Bridge getting illuminated, and an illuminating discussion of this year’s Art Theme (Cargo Cult … you caught that, right? http://bit.ly/V9pzZs) from the inimitable Caveat Magister. And with that, we may just be out of reasonable illumination references. Ahem.

Onward! Enjoy this edition of the JRS, and please do make the most of the holiday season. As our holiday gift to you, we give you this stunner:

The Man burns in 256 days (techies will dig that)!

BURNING MAN 2013 TICKETS – HOLIDAY SALE

The Holiday Sale is right around the corner – this Thursday, December 20th, beginning at noon. Pre-registration for the Holiday Sale is required and ends on Wednesday (that’s tomorrow), December 19th at noon PST, so make sure you get in there and register to have access to the sale.

Pre-register here: http://tickets.burningman.com/registration-holiday2013.html

The Holiday Sale sale offers 3,000 tickets at $650 each, and you may purchase up to 4 tickets per person. These tickets are not eligible to be sold through the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP), but they are transferable — you can sell them on your own if you wish. A *minimum* of 3% of the ticket price will be donated to the nonprofit Burning Man Project (www.burningmanproject.org).

Does that price seem high? We hear you. Thing is, offering tickets at this higher price point allows us to keep the cost of the regular tickets down and offer a robust Low Income Ticket Program. There are folks in our community who can afford to spend this much (and more) on their ticket to Burning Man, allowing us to cover our costs, while supporting economic diversity in our community. Please keep in mind these tickets are priced dramatically higher than the rest.

The 3% donation may seem small to you. However, consider this … 3% of the potential revenue from this sale is $58,000 — and that’s the *minimum* cash we’ll be donating. That’s a sizable chunk of change that can have a real impact on a fledgling non-profit such as the Burning Man Project. If the sale is 100% successful and we satisfy the budget requirements for event production, we will be able to commit to a potentially larger amount. We are aiming to accomplish several interdependent goals with this sale that aim to support the long term survival of the event and the culture. The people who are able to purchase tickets at this level are helping get the new organization off the ground, to assist Burning Man culture affect the world ‘outside the trash fence’ for the better.

So what does the Burning Man Project do? Since gaining its nonprofit status six months ago, this new nonprofit has been working to bring large Burning Man-style art to small towns in Nevada, cultivate a partnership with the Downtown Project in Las Vegas, and support the Regional Network – which is currently active in 46 countries. More recently, the Project has been working with Burners Without Borders in New Jersey to help folks affected by Storm Sandy rebuild their lives. Black Rock City, LLC makes contributions, including proceeds from fundraising events and other forms of support, throughout the year to the Burning Man Project to support these and other endeavors.

Looking for more ticket info? We will be announcing details and dates for the Low Income Ticket Program, STEP and access to the bulk of tickets to Burning Man 2013 on January 4, 2013. So … stay tuned.

As always, you can find find full ticket information on http://tickets.burningman.com, and answers to your questions in our Ticketing FAQ (http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php) and spiffy new online ticketing forum (http://ticketsupport.burningman.com/home).

BURNING MAN 2013 ART GRANTS

Every year Burning Man issues a small number of grants for the purpose of partially funding specific art projects. We look for work that stands on its own as physical, sculptural installation, independent of performances or activities, although these may accompany the installation. To learn more about the application process, visit:

http://www.burningman.com/installations/art_grants.html

To learn more about the art grant opportunities in the 2013 Man Pavilion, see:

BLACK ROCK CITY 2012 POPULATION UPDATE

When the peak population for Black Rock City 2012 was announced at noon on Friday of the event, the preliminary tally was 52,385, which seemed a bit low. We suspected there were more people in Black Rock City at its peak (which was actually Friday at 6am this year, by the way). So after the event, we went back and conducted a full and comprehensive audit …

After doing some pretty significant accounting and recounting, we determined that the actual peak population at the 2012 event was in fact 56,149. (Now, that’s not everybody who went to Burning Man, it’s just the peak population … a lot of people came late and/or left early this year, having planned ahead to avoid high-traffic ingress and egress times — did you notice the shorter wait times? Right.)

CARGO CULT IS A DARING — AND DANGEROUS — THEME

Caveat Magister (rather exhaustively, we must say) explores the dynamics of this year’s Art Theme in his (what can only be called) seminal blog post: “Cargo Cult is a daring – and dangerous – theme. Get it right.”

This guy is one of our *volunteer coordinators*, in case anybody thinks we’re all a bunch of crazy hippies running around in the desert.

THE OLD BURNING MAN HEADQUARTERS

Thanks to Scott Beale for posting these great pictures back in 2005, and to Ladybee for digging them up for us. We loved the old BMHQ, which was located on 3rd Street at 16th in San Francisco, and was ultimately demolished to make way for the new UCSF Women and Children’s Medical Center that stands there now. It’s nice to take a trip down memory lane … we miss that office!

“ODE TO BLACK ROCK CITY”

“Ode to Black Rock City” Perfectly Captures the Spirit of Burning Man (this one made us cry).

This video comes to us from Denmark. The video’s creation was led by filmmaker Anders Christian Rasmussen and is a synopsis of a longer piece which aired in full on the Danish public television station, TV2 Nord (which is to say, we can probably expect to see more Danes on playa next year). Wonderful work, Anders and crew!

FUTURE WOW! TEAM SEEKING FOOTAGE

Divine writes:

“The Future Wow! Team collected a large amount of footage during Burning Man 2012, but there are still some scenes that we need more footage of to complete the documentary.

The Future Wow! Documentary is meant to capture Burning Man 2012 and Sacred Spaces from an intellectual and spiritual level by interviewing key players and filming multiple experiences and events.

Areas in which we are seeking more footage and/or photographs include:
• Build week
• Strike week
• Groups dancing
• Sacred Spaces Village Dining
• Classes, workshops, or other activities
• Musicians and/or DJs
• Any nighttime footage
• Man Burning
• Temple Burning
• Good audio of wind

Any footage or photography submitted and selected to help finish the documentary would be fully credited. Please contact Devin at Devin (at) DavidHoule (dot) com for questions or concerns.

Thank you!

DO YOU HAVE PICTURES OF THE SEA TURTLE?

There was a giant sea turtle sculpture that was part of the Northern California CORE (Circle of Regional Effigies) project. It was … um … absconded with mid-event before it could be burned with the other CORE projects, and then it mysteriously appeared in the Temple, where it was ultimately burned on Sunday night.

Do you happen to have pictures of it anywhere in the course of its … adventure? Baker would love to have them. Email him at nelstein (at) vt (dot) edu and you’ll make his day.

THE BAY LIGHTS PROJECT BY LEO VILLAREAL

Did you hear that Leo Villareal’s ambitious Bay Lights project was (wait for it …) green lighted? Har. Well it was, and we’re all very excited to see it. The Bay Lights will be the world’s largest light installation with 25,000 white LED’s. Leo was inspired to create his digital light art by….Burning Man! Back in the mid-90’s he became disoriented on the playa and resolved to create a light sculpture as a reference point. The rest is history.

Here’s more info on the Burning Blog: http://bit.ly/R2HfJQ

And, if you’d like to help with the final stretch of fundraising, the Bay Lights has just launched a fun new grassroots fundraising campaign, The Gift of Light: http://gift.thebaylights.org/home.

You can buy one of Leo Villareal’s 25,000 white LED’s and keep or gift it, or memorialize it in someone’s name. Check out the interface — you’ll see the four bridge towers and all the lights on each cable — you can select your light and add your name, photo and a message which can be seen when you mouse over the light — so you can see who else is in the support community. There are three price levels, starting at $50. These make great holiday gifts.

To receive bi-weekly updates and to be listed on the Community page, go to www.thebaylights.org and click on Community. We’ll list your website as well.

WOOD IS MOOP. ALL OF IT. YES, ALL OF IT.

Yes, even sawdust. Even wood chips. Remember, don’t let it hit the ground! Wood debris is the #1 most common Matter Out Of Place (MOOP).

It’s ideal to have all of your project cutting and constructing done before you get to the playa, but we know that sometimes it’s unavoidable, and you have to make a few cuts (or a lot of them) once you’re on site in the desert.

Even the sawdust or wood chips sifted out in the MOOP sweeps that happen after the event, counts toward our review by the BLM. Therefore, don’t let it hit the ground!

Cut your wood on a tarp, out of the wind (I know, right?) in a sheltered spot. Pack up the tarp immmediately, and either dump the chips into a burn barrel, your burnables yard waste bag (you bring those, right?) or into your take home trash. Voila! Your project is finished, and you haven’t MOOped up a storm!
