ANNOUNCING BURNER PROFILES

Burning Man is excited to announce the launch of the Burner Profile, a system to help facilitate the flow of information we regularly collect from Burning Man participants for ticket sales, theme camp and art installation registration, mutant vehicle applications, What Where When submissions, and other things that people do and create for Black Rock City.

Read all about it here on the Burning Blog:

LOW INCOME TICKET PROGRAM OPEN!

We’re beyond excited to announce the opening of our Low Income Ticket Program. We recognize that many of our participants lead lifestyles that are rich in creativity and productivity, but not necessarily in cash. To honor and support the financial diversity within our community, we are offering 4,000 tickets at $190 each. These tickets are available by application only and are strictly for those who can demonstrate financial need. We are currently accepting applications! Full details of the Low Income Ticket Program, and how to apply, can be found at http://tickets.burningman.com.

BWB INVITES YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN A RADICALLY INCLUSIVE ARTS PROGRAM IN HAITI

Carmen, Executive Director of Burners Without Borders (www.burnerswithoutborders.org) writes:

“The Burning Man community is known for creating extraordinary outcomes in the most unlikely places, and with your participation, we are about to do it again in Haiti. With the launch of Burners Without Borders new artist in residency program, we have an opportunity to put our community’s principles into action and significantly transform the lives of artists whose voices have been historically excluded-until now.

BWB has partnered with the wildly successful arts organization, Jakmel Ekspresyon, to create a first of its kind arts program in Jacmel. The goal? To enable marginalized artists, including women, the physically challenged, and those who identify as gay to become financially self-reliant. How? By empowering these artists to learn the skills necessary in design, screen printing and business to eventually earn an income from their talents. We have just two weeks remaining in our Indiegogo Campaign to raise the $10K necessary to build a screen printing studio and to take artists from our community to Jacmel to share their talents and skills.

BWB is asking for help from this art loving community to support the success of this program that will provide a sustainable income for artists who would not otherwise have the opportunity to express themselves or financially benefit from their work. You can support the creation of a new model for radical inclusion in the arts in Haiti. Please click on the following link to learn more and to donate to this project.

Together, we can create the foundation for lasting change for years to come!”

RESEARCH STUDY: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO PARTICIPATE?

Amy writes:

“You are invited to take part in a research study of Burning Man: An Ethnographic Study of Burning Man’s Contribution to Society to explore and examine if, and how, participation and the Ten Principles contribute to positive social change in the greater society. The researcher is inviting participants of Burning Man’ Regional Network to be in the study. This study is being conducted by Amy K. Swan, a Ph.D. candidate at Walden University.

The purpose of this study is to gain understanding of the participant’s perspective of participation and the Ten Principles within the Burning Man community and in their work and home communities.

The potential benefits of being in this study and sharing your valuable perspective would potentially allow this study to create a framework for organizations and communities to build positive collaborative environments for their members.

Please follow this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BurningMan to participate today!”

“Announcing the Burning Man Black Rock City Airport Terminal and Pilots Lounge International Design Competition. Design the 2013 Airport Terminal and Pilots Lounge for the largest and highest profile participatory Art Event in the World. When attendees land we want their eyes to pop out at the visual feast before them.

SUNSET SUPPER CLUB SEEKS CHEFS WITH MAD CULINARY SKILLS

Well, this sounds tasty. Ruby Skye writes:

“The Sunset Supper Club is looking for some amazing culinary talent. We would love to showcase your skills in a romantic dusty playa setting. We are looking for creative, intuitive, and visionary food artists willing to take the lead on one of our 4 amazing nights. We would love to see your menu and theme ideas and will help put a crew together to make a magical once in a lifetime feast. We are looking for folks with professional cooking experience that understand timing, bulk purchasing, and can tolerate cooking in unpredictable, dusty, and windy conditions. If interested, please submit your menu and theme ideas for consideration to Ruby Skye at screwbug (at) gmail (dot) com. And if you have any questions. We love questions.

In addition, if you own or operate an ART CAR and would be interested in helping out with a mobile feast, a dessert/champagne art tour, or simply give some after dinner cruises, we’d love to hear from you. We will feed you well and apply adult beverages liberally.”

WATER TRUCKS – THEY’RE NOT MOBILE SHOWERS!

You’ve seen the trucks that drive around Black Rock City, spraying down the streets and dampening the dust, right? You’ve also seen the ‘naked marathon’… groups of people, tearing off their clothes (or not), and running behind the trucks, hoping to get cooled off by the spray. Quite a hoot, right?

Right, so let’s not do that anymore … here’s why:

We know, it’s WATER, and we’re in the desert, and that’s amazing! But honestly, the water coming out of these vehicles isn’t potable (potable – safe to drink). It contains bacteria which could make you sick, and you certainly don’t want that, in the desert or elsewhere.

The playa gets incredibly slippery when wet, more so than regular dirt … over the years we’ve seen more than a few busted up faces, after folks slipped and fell against the metal bumper of the water truck (can we just say: OW).

Save your guts and your teeth, use potable water for bathing!
