**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Greetings everybody! We hope this JRS finds you well. In the wake of our Individual Ticket sale — which saw its share of technical glitches, but sold all 40,000 available tickets to eager Burners — we’re kicking off the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) this Thursday, February 28th. STEP facilitates the secure, hassle-free exchange of tickets between Burners, so if you’re holding an extra that you’re willing to sell, or you’re looking to pick up a ticket, STEP is a great option for you. Read more about it below.

We’re also happy to announce that the Afterburn Report for 2012 is now live! What’s that? The Afterburn Report is Burning Man’s annual report, detailing the activities and events that go into making Burning Man happen every year — both on and off playa. It actually makes for fascinating reading … and even the most experienced Burner among you may well learn something new.

Finally, we’re seeking some interns for this year’s event cycle … interested? Qualified? Apply! See below for more.

THE 2012 AFTERBURN REPORT IS LIVE

The Afterburn is Burning Man’s annual report, detailing the activities and events that go into making Burning Man happen every year — both on and off playa.

We encourage you to read each of the individual reports in the Afterburn, for each one paints a picture of the efforts that go into facilitating the creation of not only Black Rock City, but Burning Man culture in the world. Whether it’s the Art Department, Community Services, Technology, Administration, Communications, DPW or Playa Safety, these teams put an incredible amount of work into making Burning Man happen — you might be surprised what you learn.

Thank YOU, Burners, for everything you do.

CREATE YOUR BURNER PROFILE!

Your Burner Profile is your place to record and reflect who YOU are as part of the Burning Man community. Register now!

http://profiles.burningman.org

Information stored in your Burner Profile will help you to streamline access to ticket sales, register art installations, theme camps, and mutant vehicles, submit a media project for review and more. So the more information you put into it, the more benefit you’ll get out of it.

You can include as much information as you wish — or as little as you’d like — about who you are and how you participate in Burning Man culture both on playa and year-round. It’s totally up to you. Regardless, your information will be private and will not be shared — nor will it be searchable on the internet. (For more details see our Privacy Policy: http://www.burningman.com/index/privacy_policy.html)

For answers to your questions about Burner Profiles, visit our FAQ (http://profiles.burningman.org/faq) and this blog post:http://blog.burningman.com/2013/01/news/announcing-burner-profiles/.

SECURE TICKET EXCHANGE PROGRAM (STEP) OPENS THIS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28

STEP is the secure, safe, hassle-free way for Burners to sell their extra tickets, and for eager Burners to buy them. Here’s how it works:

To buy a ticket through STEP: 1. If you want to purchase a ticket through STEP, log in to your Burner Profile (http://profiles.burningman.org) and sign up to join the STEP queue, starting February 28, 2013 at 12pm (noon) PST. Anyone who has not already purchased a ticket through one of our other sales can sign up to purchase a ticket through STEP. NOTE: If you do not yet have a Burner Profile sign up before Thursday (http://profiles.burningman.org) – having a profile ahead of time will speed up the registration process and ensure you are as close to the front of the STEP line as possible.

2. When a ticket becomes available, the first person in the STEP queue is offered that ticket (at face value, plus usual service fees and a $4 per ticket STEP fee) via email. If that person decides to purchase the ticket offered to them, the sale is made. If they decline to purchase the ticket, it’s then offered to the next person in line … and so on.

To sell a ticket through STEP: 1. Burners who have an extra ticket to sell can go to their Burner Profile (http://profiles.burningman.org) to put it into the STEP system (so long as it is before tickets have shipped or you selected WIll Call for your order).

2. Once your ticket has sold, your credit card will be credited for the price of the ticket plus delivery fee.

Since STEP offers tickets for sale to the people waiting in the queue, you can’t specify who is offered your ticket. Additionally, signing up for the STEP queue doesn’t guarantee you’ll be able to purchase a ticket … nor does offering your ticket guarantee it will sell. We’ll stop accepting STEP sign ups on July 31, 2013.

For more information about STEP, see the STEP section of our Frequently Asked Questions: http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php#step

BMHQ SEEKS INTERNS FOR 2013 EVENT CYCLE

We’re excited to announce three Internships in our San Francisco office.

Three unpaid internships will provide the right candidates with opportunities to engage with the pre-event preparations of Burning Man’s Communications Department, Regional Network and/or the Art Department during the busy pre-event production cycle (June-August) and on site in Black Rock City during the 2013 Burning Man event (August 25th – September 2nd).

Internships require a high level of organization, acute attention to detail and deadlines, top-notch written and verbal communication skills, and a keen ability to think quickly and function well in a high-pressure, creative environment that is often chaotic but always a lot of fun.

*** To be eligible, you must receive official school credit for your internship. ***

TEDX BLACK ROCK CITY VIDEOS NOW AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING

The good folks who run the TEDxBlackRockCity write to tell us:

“The TEDxBlackRockCity 2012 Team is pleased to announce that the 2012 TEDxBlackRockCity talks are now available for you to view on YouTube as well as on the TEDxBlackRockCity website at www.tedxblackrockcity.com.

Black Rock City provided an especially powerful setting for this year’s investigation. On its most basic level, TEDxBlackRockCity created a stage for some of Burning Man’s most visionary inhabitants to speak about their ideas and creations. On a deeper level, it drew on the very values of Burning Man, whose Ten Principles provided touchstones for the speakers in their talks.

TEDxBlackRockCity is intended to foster creativity among all of its remarkable participants — both on stage and off — drawing on the uniquely dynamic community of Burning Man. This past year we teamed up with The Einstein Project at TEDxBlackRockCity taking web casting one step further, in collaboration with Shouting Fire (www.shotingfire.org ).

We invite you to play the games, listen and watch the multi-media, and prepare to ‘think differently’ as you experience the talks of TEDx Black Rock City. It will help you make best use of the ideas you will encounter. Immerse Yourself. Enjoy doing so.

TEDxBlackRockCity organizers are seeking volunteers and potential speakers for the 2013 TEDxBlackRockCity experience. If you are interested in participating please contact this year’s co-organizers Klaudia Oliver and Jon La Grace at tedxbrc (at) gmail (dot) com and let us know how you would like to help, participate or engage in presenting your Idea Worth Spreading.”

MIKE THE 8-FOOT-TALL VOODOO DOLL

“When people ask me why I make the cross-country journey to Burning Man year after year, I tell them it is intensely therapeutic. And then I watch them laugh.

‘What do you get at Burning Man?’ they’ll probe, as if the price of admission includes something.

‘What you get at Burning Man,’ I tell them, ‘is entirely up to you.'”

REFLECTIONS OF FERTILITY 2.0 CAPTURED AMIDST ONE PARTICIPANT’S EXPERIENCE

Kendrick writes:

“Utilizing the ancient technology of disposable cameras, one humble burner’s earnest endeavor to capture the year that was Fertility 2.0 is presented for your judgment, diversion, education or reflection in artifact, image & word. Every story is made up of and part of countless others. This is the accumulated story of one ticket’s journey to a participant and everything surrounding the year long struggle to return to black rock.

THE AUSTRALIANS GO TO BURNING MAN

Harlequin writes:

“After several years of dreaming and planning, hoping and wishing, in 2012 four Australians managed to travel to the other side of the planet to find themselves in Black Rock City.

It was an amazing experience that will never be forgotten. This is what happened – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg7_n8ieHWM (nb: video is slightly NSFW)

With love, from The Australians.

ps we’re happy to report that we all got tickets for 2013, and we will be back with an even bigger group this year. See you on the playa :)”

THOU ART DUST: MORE BORING PICTURES FROM THE PREHISTORIC LAKEBED

(PRO-TIP: on his webpage, scroll right to see the images.) Brian writes:

“These pictures are from my second trip to Black Rock City in 2012, they’re shot with a digital SLR and film cameras — both color and B&W. I developed and scanned the film in my apartment.

I tried to avoid the cliche pictures we’ve all seen too many times now, choosing to focus on more of a day in the life aspect.

Jeremy Ambers, an independent filmmaker who is working on a feature-length documentary about the making of Leo Villareal’s The Bay Lights (tentatively titled ‘Impossible Light’) is seeking archival footage from Burning Man for a portion of the film, which will be released later this year.

Specifically, he is looking for:
• General event footage from 1994 – 2000.
• Footage of the DisOrient camp from 2001 – present.
• Any archival footage of Leo Villareal or his BM installations between 1996 and present day.

All footage (SD/HD files and tape formats) welcome. Any footage submitted and selected to help finish the documentary will be fully credited. Please contact Jeremy at jeremyambers (at) gmail (dot) com for more information.

FLUFFING ACADEMY

Captain Billy writes:

“Would you enjoy being a vital component in the building of a Theme Camp? Can’t take the heat, lack the strength or skills? No problem, build sandwiches instead of structures in our big shaded dust free kitchen. Come to the French Quarter Fluffing Academy to help feed, motivate and hydrate the hardest working construction crew on the playa. Bring your sexiest outfits and costumes or lots of sunscreen if that’s the way you roll. Sharpen your flirting skills, experience genuine love and affection from hungry, thirsty people. You can hide from the sun and heat in our kitchen while learning how to make exotic foods and beverages. You must be able to come early in the build week. Contact me at BJBLITZ (at) AOL (dot) COM for details.”

GRAND LIGHTING CEREMONY FOR THE BAY LIGHTS – SAN FRANCISCO, CA – MARCH 5

We’ve told you about the Bay Lights project (www.thebaylights.org) before, and guess what … it’s happening! The Bay Lights go LIVE on the Bay Bridge on Tuesday, March 5th, and we’re very excited to see it go off! If you’re in the Bay Area, and want to see it live, a list of the best views for the Grand Lighting Ceremony can be found here: http://thebaylights.org/view . Pier 7 will be a great spot to view the lights, and they’ll be giving out free hot chocolate and churros there [Editor’s note: YUM!]). All of the restaurants along that section of the Embarcadero will have good views, too.

Now, if you’re NOT in the Bay Area and still want to see it happen, you can watch a live webcast that will be embedded on that same webpage (http://thebaylights.org/view).

Join us in congratulating Leo Villareal on this fantastic artistic success … we’re proud to have Leo on The Burning Man Project board (www.burningmanproject.org), and happy to say he got his start creating light art back in the day at Burning Man.

GO-PEDS AND THE ART OF NOISY VEHICLES ON PLAYA

We’ve seen a distinct decline in these especially-noisy vehicles over the years, but there’s still some people who bring them out to Burning Man. Yep, go-peds and the like, without mufflers on the tailpipe, SCREAMING an ear-splitting drone as they blaze along the playa floor.

Want to ride one of these around? That’s fine … but if you want to be a good BRC citizen and not turn heads (in the bad way) wherever you go, get a muffler for them! Also, you’re beholden to the same driving protocols and speed limits (5MPH) as all other vehicles in Black Rock City. Which are? Riiight here:
