Well folks, the Burnal Equinox is in our rear-view mirror, and we hope this gets you excited, because for the next 6 months, it’s all downhill from here! We’re all screaming headlong aiming at the playa!

So this somehow became the movie edition of the JRS, it seems. We’ve got a bunch of videos and movies for you to tune into. And who doesn’t like videos, right? First off, the latest documentary about Burning Man “Spark: A Burning Man Story” will premiere at SXSW this weekend, and we’ll be keeping you in the loop as we learn more about where and when it will be shown after that.

Next up, check out the “Photos, Videos and Audio” section for a couple ring-dingers you’re going to love. And we’re actually holding one back to spring on you in the next JRS, so you have something to look forward to (we didn’t want to go TOO overboard now, y’know?).

Now if you Just Can’t Wait for Burning Man to start, don’t fret! FIGMENT is coming up again this summer — now in MORE cities — and it’s a great way to experience Burning Man culture manifesting in the real world in a really beautiful way. Check it out, learn about what they’ve got going on, and get involved!

The Man burns in 176 days!

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM 2013

Carmen Mauk of Burners Without Borders writes:

“BWB has launched its fifth annual grant program, and you are invited to participate! To date, BWB ‘s grant program has provided funding for over 60 projects that have made a positive impact by leveraging a relatively small amount of money against the mighty power of the community.

This year, we are offering grant awards from $100-$1,000 to help jump start creative civic projects in communities around the world. It’s simple. Gather your community, find out what you care about, and let your imaginations run wild. The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2013.

Are you looking for some inspiration for a project in your community? Check out the 2012 grantees and learn about the application details here:

RIDING A BIKE TO BURNING MAN — FROM SOUTH AFRICA

Kayden Kleinhans decided to ride his bike from South Africa to Burning Man, via South America. He’s raising awareness about climate change and carbon neutral energy, and he’s carrying a book of messages penned at the temple at Afrika Burn to be delivered to the temple in Black Rock City this year. Follow along with his amazing journey on his blog:

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS DEMOLISHES NEARLY 100 DESTROYED HOMES, SAVING HOMEOWNERS MILLIONS

“On Oct. 29, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record blasted the northeast. Within a week, Richard Scott of Burners Without Borders was there to provide assistance. “If you had a skill set that you could go and help people, save them tons of money, give them hope, how could I not do it? It’s only a few months out of my life,” Scott said.

HOW DOES BURNING MAN COMPARE TO KUMBH MELA?

Chip Conley is (amongst other things) a successful hotelier, world-traveler, festival aficionado and Burning Man Project board member. He’s just returned from a five-week tour of Asia, during which he attended five different festivals. Lucky for us, one of the festivals he attended — along with 80 million other people — was the centuries-old Kumbh Mela (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumbh_Mela), the world’s largest gathering of religious pilgrims, which takes place every three years in India.

So how does Kumbh Mela compare to Burning Man? Well, seeing distinct commonalities in the experiences, Chip penned a fascinating post comparing the two in his Fest300 blog. And we? We are the beneficiaries of his perspective.

THE “PROFILES IN DUST” TEAM NEEDS YOUR HELP

“This is Terry Pratt from the ‘Profiles In Dust’ Media Team. MULTI-CITY CALL FOR ARTISTS FOR FIGMENT 2013

FIGMENT is an amazing example of Burning Man culture taking off in the real world, and y’all should participate! They’re now calling for artists in a number of cities. Here’s what they’re about (cribbed from their website), followed by the callout:

“FIGMENT catalyzes and celebrates an abundance of creativity and passion, challenging artists and our communities to find new ways to create, share, think, and dream. FIGMENT’s annual participatory arts event began in New York City in 2007 and has expanded to include events in Boston, Detroit, and Jackson, Mississippi.

FIGMENT demonstrates what the arts can be: participatory, bursting with creativity and completely free, born from the desire to share imagination and invention between artists and the public.

FIGMENT is a grassroots effort, organized and run entirely by volunteers as a gift to our cities because we believe in the aspirations and mission of FIGMENT.”

Submissions are now open for FIGMENT 2013 events in Geelong, Australia (March 23-24), San Diego (April 7), Jackson, MS (May 18-19), NYC (June 8-9), and the summer-long exhibitions in NYC!

Project submissions are welcome in every medium imaginable — Your FIGMENT project can be anything… A game, an experiment, a request, a challenge, a guided meditation, a performance based on audience input, a sculpture that moves or responds, a heart-stopping technological innovation that changes the way we see the world … Anything that gets people working and playing and creating together.

I’M GONNA HAND OUT FLIERS ON PLAYA!

So you’ve got this great project or product you want to promote, and Burners seem like the PERFECT AUDIENCE for what you’re selling. So you want to get the word out, maybe hand out some fliers? Sure, you’re technically welcome to do that, but you may find yourself on the receiving end of some pretty virulent vitriol from your fellow participants (and we hear about it, believe us).

See, one of our core principles is Decommodification … which means, amongst other things, that Burners don’t want to be treated like a consumer to be sold to, especially on playa. Here’s the full description: “In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.” Besides, fliers create more MOOP, and we really don’t need any more of that, either!

So right, you might want to reconsider that marketing pitch you’re about to make, and instead, opt to have a spontaneous and authentic interaction with that person in front of you.

While we’re at it, here are all the Ten Principles: http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html
