{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

Greetings! As we write, the worldwide leadership of our far-flung Burning Man community is gathering together in Oakland for the annual Global Leadership Conference. This is annually gathering provides an opportunity for representatives, emissaries, ambassadors, leaders and staff to connect, share ideas and get inspired about sharing Burning Man culture with the world.

The GLC is a full weekend of panels, talks, workshops, and social activities during which participants learn and share best practices around community engagement, event production, civic participation, organizational structures and more. To say we’re excited to have these Burning Man representatives all in one place at the same time would be an understatement.

Last night conference participants were treated to a screening of the new documentary “SPARK: A Burning Man Story” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbSUyYXH8hs) … which is FANTASTIC, to say the least. We look forward to more screenings soon so that YOU can see it as well (more to come on that topic).

Meanwhile, in this JRS, we have job openings with the DPW, BMHQ internship opportunities, the opening of our Support a Project 2013 page (learn how to get your project on there!), getting a runner’s high in Black Rock City, Leave No Trace training, Burning Peep and more. Hope this finds you well wherever you are!

The Man burns in 148 days!

BMHQ SEEKS INTERNS FOR 2013 EVENT CYCLE

We are currently recruiting for three Internships in our San Francisco office.

Burning Man internships will provide opportunities to engage with the pre-event preparations of the Communications Department, Regional Network and the Art Department during the busy pre-event production cycle (June-August) and on site in Black Rock City during the 2013 Burning Man event.

Internships require a high level of organization, acute attention to detail and deadlines, top-notch written and verbal communication skills and a keen ability to think quickly and function well in a high-pressure, creative environment that is often chaotic but always a lot of fun.

*** To be eligible, you must receive official school credit for your internship. ***

2013 PLAQUE OF REMEMBRANCE, CALL FOR NAMES

Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition continues to honor those people who have affected our Burning experiences and who participated in creating Burning Man. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year’s Remembrance Plaque.

Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com

(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.**)

Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year’s plaque.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Manbase, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants).

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

BURNING MAN MAY BE THE FUTURE, BUT IT’S NOT AN ESCAPE

“In a recent Io9 article, futurist Jamais Cascio says that Burning Man ‘is often the “default” scenario for tomorrow’s culture among many futurists.’

Huh.

I suppose that’s a compliment. But … hey, what kind of future is that exactly anyway?”

LEAVE NO TRACE – WITH YOUR TOOTHBRUSH. WHAT? READ ON:

Scott writes:

“We’re looking for schools to participate in collecting old used toothbrushes for a communal art recycling project representing the over consumption of plastic material on this planet. The art piece will be displayed on the playa for the 2013 Burning Man event.

In line with the consciousness of Burning Man’s principle, “Leave No Trace”, we aim to educate kids on the harm plastic has on our environment and what we can do to properly manage its risk through recycling.

Our mission is to engage kids in their schools across the U.S. through education and art in the practices of sustainability through an item they use every day, the TOOTHBRUSH. Over ONE BILLION toothbrushes make their way to landfills annually. It takes several hundred years for these plastic toothbrushes to decompose into our soil. We are now in a full-blown plastic epidemic threatening our environment. The time is NOW to raise our collective consciousness in the proper disposal of plastics through recycling.

We have created a year round sustainable program for every school that participates in our art recycling project. It’s a great program where your school earns .02 cents for every piece of plastic they collect and recycle. In addition, our organization will be giving away a $5,000 grant to one school through a collection contest.

We need your help in spreading this campaign to as many schools as possible. Please E-mail us at bmtoothbrush (at) gmail (dot) com to start the process of registering your school. The process is simple. We’ll walk you through each step. Once your school registers, they’ll receive a ReVITALize bin to start collecting toothbrushes.

Thank you for your help and participation.”

“As educators, we all bring so much back to our classrooms from the playa. The goal of BREC is to create a staff development opportunity unlike any other – where we help each other to bring the magic home to our students.

All educators are welcome; Early-childhood ed, K-12, higher ed, adult ed, certificated, classified, administrator or school board member, all are welcome! We all have something to share.

Check out our Facebook page to download our conference flyer and get your burn week board approved for professional development! Have something to share? We’re building our schedule now! Volunteer and participate!

PETER HUDSON’S LATEST ZOETROPE “ETERNAL RETURN”

Lucky for us, Peter Hudson will be creating another of his incredible zoetropes for Burning Man 2013.

In case you weren’t aware, a zoetrope cylindrical device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures; instead of drawings and shutters, Peter uses sculptures and strobe lights to achieve the same effect. In the past, he’s used his formidable skills to bring swimmers, divers, monkeys, and rowing skeletons to life on the playa, and around the world.

We’re not going to tell you the details of his project, as he prefers to unveil his creations in Black Rock City, but you can darn well be sure it’s going to be amazing.

Please support his project if you’re so inclined:

FIGMENT – SAN DIEGO, CA – APRIL 7

While we don’t normally post local events in the JRS (we appreciate the fact that you don’t all live in one place), we definitely want to bring this one to your attention because this is an exceptional example of Burning Man culture happening in the world. So there ya go. Miss Information writes:

“FIGMENT, a celebration of interactive and participatory art, is making its San Diego debut at Chicano Park this spring. This free family-friendly event stretches the boundaries of creativity and community by engaging visitors with art in a fresh new way: all featured artwork is participatory and interactive. FIGMENT also breaks down the barrier between artists and the public by encouraging the community to contribute their talents by bringing their own participatory and interactive art to share. Playing a game, creating a collage, adding paint to a mural in progress, banging on an experimental instrument – anything that gets people working, playing and creating together – is invited and welcome! FIGMENT Comes to San Diego in 2013: Chicano Park – Sunday, April 7th, 10AM – 6PM. For more info, visit our website at http://sandiego.figmentproject.org/ .”

BURNING MAN / EARTH GUARDIANS LNT TRAIN THE TRAINER CAMPING EVENT – NEVADA CITY, CA – MAY 18-19

Karina writes:

“On May 18-19 Earth Guardians will host our annual Leave No Trace (LNT) camping trip. If you are interested in learning more about why Burning Man is the largest LNT event in the world and how you can help contribute by teaching LNT, this is the trip for you.

If you come, you will become a certified LNT trainer, meet other active Burners, visit the beautiful California foothills and have FUN at the same time. There is no charge for this training. The trip involves traveling to the Grass Valley/Nevada City area and camping. Each of you will be teaching a principle of LNT with an emphasis on how it pertains to Burning Man and the wilderness.

Please sign up for the course only when you are sure you will attend. Registration will close on April 27th. If you are interested, send an email to: lnt (at) burningman (dot) com.

For more information on the trip: http://www.earthguardians.net.

BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR: NOISE

There’s really no need to drone on about this one (so to speak), but it’s always good form to be a good neighbor, and while radical self-expression says you’re welcome to fly your freak flag however you damn well please in Black Rock City, you might consider it part of the gifting principle to be considerate of your immediate neighbors when it comes to how loud you’re playing your music (or whatever) and when.

If you’re having a conflict, talk with each other, work it out, and play it cool. If you can’t come to a workable agreement, talk to a Black Rock Ranger — they’re trained in handling the non-confrontational mediation of disputes just like this.

Everybody loves a good neighbor.
