{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

Overheard at BMHQ this week: “It’s starting to feel a lot like Burning Man around here.” Ayup, sure is.

Theme camp fundraiser events are popping up on the calendar, art project Kickstarters are spreading like wildfire through the social network, and early preparations are underway for all sorts of dreams, fantasies, grand schemes and the hard logistics needed to make them happen.

Yep, it’s starting to feel a lot like Burning Man.

Speaking of which, the deadline for theme camp registration is fast approaching — April 30, to be exact. So if you’ve got plans to register for pre-placement, hop to it. And keep in mind that this year, a Burner Profile is required, so if you don’t already have one, allot yourself some additional time to make that happen beforehand.

In ticket news, the Low Income Ticket Program is no longer accepting applications for 2013, and the last of the tickets are in the process of being rewarded as we type. Details below.

Lastly, we wrapped up the 7th Annual Burning Man Global Leadership Conference last weekend, and our man Caveat has been reporting on it in the Burning Blog … definitely worth a read. http://blog.burningman.com/tag/glc/

The Man burns in 135 days!

RIP: PEPE OZAN, ARTIST & SCULPTOR

We are deeply saddened by the news of artist Pepe Ozan’s recent death. Pepe was a formidable and passionate artist, sculptor and visionary who contributed greatly to the Burning Man experience.

We encourage you to read this and learn about Pepe’s work, and if you knew him, to add your remembrances in the comments:

LOW INCOME TICKET PROGRAM CLOSES

This just in from the intrepid ticket team:

The Low Income Ticket Program is no longer accepting applications for 2013. If you submitted your application on or before April 12 rest assured we are still busily reviewing applications.

If you submitted your application more than six (6) weeks ago and haven’t heard anything back, please double check your spam folder to make sure your notification isn’t lingering there before contacting us. We’ll continue to send out notifications for the next few weeks.

RIDESHARE TO BURNING MAN

Looking to get to and from Black Rock City this year? Well, plenty of people are too! And of course, ridesharing is the smart, economical and environmentally-friendly way of making it happen. Whether you have a ride to offer or are in need of a ride, coordinate your carpool on our rideshare board.

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

REGISTERING YOUR PROJECT? YOU’LL NEED A BURNER PROFILE

We wanted to give you the heads up that if you’re submitting a project registration form for a theme camp, art installation, Mutant Vehicle, or press/media project, you’ll need to create a Burner Profile first.

If you do not already have a Burner Profile, please allow extra time in your registration process to create one.

You can access Burner Profiles, forms and their submission deadlines at http://profiles.burningman.org/ .

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

NEVADA LEGISLATIVE LEADERS LOOK TO TAX BURNING MAN

The Nevada legislature is considering rewriting the Nevada entertainment tax law such that Burning Man would no longer be exempt from paying a 5% entertainment tax. Burning Man is exempt because it is considered an art festival and because it’s held outdoors.

SEARCHING FOR SUPPLIES, ART PARTS AND WHATNOT? TRY OUT TINKOMATIC

This is pretty rad. Thought you might find it useful. Bob writes:

“This is my yearly plug about a small web app I developed that can help people get their gears and art parts in place and in time, and without depleting the planet: TinkOMatic (www.tinkomatic.com) allows you to search multiple classifieds and auction sites at once, and save your searches until you find what you’re really looking for.

You can search craigslist, oodle, backpage, kijiji, and eBay all at once; and if you don’t find right away that elusive playa bike, parabolic antenna, or tent frame you need for your next project, you can just save your searches, and easily check whether anything new came up.

The app is completely free and has been featured on lifehacker, mashable, and techcrunch.

Peace,
-Bob a.k.a. Skinny D.”

BURNING MAN AND THE PRINCIPLED LIFE

Here’s a snippet from this nice blog post by David Immel:

“I want the world to be a better place. I want to be better at being better in the world. Burning Man gives me a practice ground, a supportive microcosm, a field of experimentation that I can then use in the ‘real world.’ I strive to be welcoming to strangers in the world. I strive to be welcoming to the potential for poetry and richness and awe and beauty that anyone I meet may create at any moment. I strive to carry wonder and spontaneity and artfulness and surprises to others. Burning Man makes the world alive and full and new and brave and well, a better place.”

STEVE THE WIZARD

Justin Jones writes about his playa experience with Steve the Wizard.

“When I met Steve, he was wearing a purple wizards’s cloak, sitting alone at a table in the middle of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. Steve was not a wizard.”

IN SEARCH OF SACRED SPACES, IN THE HARVARD GAZETTE

“In a video from Burning Man, the quirky Nevada desert festival, a naked man rides past on a bicycle. A woman in sunglasses wears a hat that looks like a salad. A lean young man comments on the festival at large: ‘This is the ultimate expression of human nature.'”

BURNING MAN ULTRAMARATHON SHORT DOCUMENTARY

We usually have a poke and a giggle about the Burning Man Ultramarathon (because we can), but seriously though? Mad respect. This piece brings it home. John writes:

“The Burning Man Ultramarathon is without a doubt one of the most unusual and exotic foot races on the planet. Learn more about this fun and unique 50k from its race director and creator Cherie Yanek. Here’s the link:

WHAT THE …? AMAZING PHOTOGRAPHIC EYE CANDY FROM JULIAN CASH

Julian (who we love) writes:

“See dozens of these small magical Strange Planets that were found at Burning Man. This is photographic candy for the eye and brain. A delightful and sweet perspective for looking at the tiny world of the big playa.

AROMATHERA POTTY PROJECT

“Burners have said that there’s no sense of smell on the Playa.
Yet visitors to the porta potties testify otherwise.

I am Tracey of Lamay Camp, Kidsville and in 2011 I ‘found my Gift’.

I had brought some essential oils and essential oil blends I created to the Playa to scent my tent for hypnotherapy experience sessions. Finding my visit to our local porta potties less than inspirational, I scented every third porta potty with a blend and put a sign up on the outside of the door indicating the blend and its all-botanical ingredients. When I returned a few hours later to check on the scented porta potties, I found line ups for them! Soon, the Aromathera Potties were the talk of Kidsville. One person even said that it was the highlight of his Burn! So I started to think: What if Aromathera Potties appeared all over Black Rock City? What if aromatherapy enthusiasts shared their gifts at their local porta potties throughout the Burn?

In 2012, The AromaThera Potty Project exploded to over a dozen porta potty sites and AromaThera Potty Super Heroes.

So here’s the deal with the Aromathera Potty Project:
1. Contact me so we can get on the same page and so that I can get an overview of the spread of the Project.

2. Select/collect/create a handful of blends or singles (I suggest 30ml of each) to scent your local porta potties with. Here are the ‘Anarres Emo Oils’ I used: http://www.anarreshealth.ca/catalog/3/essential_oils?page=3 I suggest every third or fourth porta potty to make the job manageable for you and to ensure that scent averse folks have a choice not to use an Aromathera Potty.

3. Create non moopy signs to post on the Aromatherapy Potties. Bring 2 per blend in case one goes missing. Be sure that the signs state boldly ‘Aromathera Potty Project’, name the blend in a fun but accurately evocative way (‘Furry Forest’ rather than ‘Fun Fur’ for an evergreen blend) and list all of the ingredients with the common and latin botanical names so that we don’t endanger anyone with allergies to specific botanicals. NO SYNTHETIC SCENTS OR PERFUMES, PLEASE AS THESE ARE ALLERGENIC AND NOT NATURAL AND NOT AROMATHERAPEUTIC ETC.

4. Once on the playa, implement your Aromathera Potty Project at your local porta potties! Visit every 4 hours or so, tidy your porta potty and flick drops of essential oil goodness on the walls. It only takes a few minutes and you’re done!

5. Marvel at the line ups at ‘your’ scented Aromathera Potties! Bask in praise, directed and overheard! Rejoice in the gift you are bringing to the Playa Experience!

You can see some blends created for 2012 here:
http://www.anarreshealth.ca/node/274
I’ve already created a Truth Serum… I’m excited. That’s how I roll.”

THE VIRGIN LETTER PROJECT IS BACK!

Mel writes:

“The Virgin Letters Project is back and looking for your letters. Once again, we want you to write a letter or ten to the virgin Burner you were. These letters will be gathered via website and any regional burns we can get a drop box to. We are also looking for people to host drop boxes at regional burns.

THE SAINTED PALATE AWAITS

Ruby Skye writes:

“SANTOPALATO, Black Rock City’s most mysterious fine dining experience, hidden deep within the French Quarter, is seeking curious campers and helpers who love to cook, concoct, wine and dine. Builders, designers, artists and all others welcome! We have some wonderful tricks up our sleeves this year, and need a passionate team to make them a reality. SUPPORT THE TEMPLE OF WHOLLYNESS FOR BURNING MAN 2013

“The Temple of Whollyness will offer the space to reflect upon how to become more whole with our world. Its epic central pyramid – 64’ tall with an 87’x 87’ base – is designed with sacred mathematical proportions and constructed using our innovative building techniques. This majestic sanctuary will be crafted completely out of geometric interlocking wood pieces that fit together without the use of nails, glue or metal fasteners. Gregg Fleishman’s life’s work, genius assembly, love of geometry, in combination with his architecture and design background will be gifted to the Temple – the largest temporary interlocking wood structure ever!”

HELP BLACK ROCK SOLAR CHANGE LIVES FOR NEVADA’S HUNGRY & HOMELESS

The good folks at Black Rock Solar (www.blackrocksolar.org) write:

“Want to see a magic trick? If Black Rock Solar can raise $12,000, they’ll turn it into a $112,000 solar array for FISH, a Carson City charity — and FISH will turn that into thousands of meals, scores of warm coats and hundreds of medical treatments for the hungry and homeless! Please chip in so this incredible charity can start collecting free solar power, saving money on its electric bill and using those funds to help the needy in Nevada’s state capitol. Let’s show some Burning Man love to our Nevada neighbors, even the ones who can’t join us in BRC. Need more incentive? Black Rock Solar is offering some exclusive rewards … get yours while they last! http://greenourplanet.org/blackrocksolar

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CROWDFUNDING YOUR BURNING MAN ART PROJECT

Ian MacKenzie writes:

“As a gift to the Burning Man community, I’ve collected my best advice for creators to harness the power of crowdfunding. After all, it’s a perfect fit: much like Burning Man, the true currency being exchanged isn’t money, but relationship (also know as shared indebtedness).

ASK BEFORE YOU SHOOT

Did you just walk up on the PERFECT scene, and you’re dying to capture this MAGICAL MOMENT? Before you pull out your camera and take the shot, do the polite and respectful thing: ask first.

Everybody has different sensitivities about their privacy, especially at Burning Man, when we’re all flying our various freak flags. It’s good form to ask your would-be subject for permission to take their picture BEFORE you shoot.
