{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Greetings everybody! It’s been getting super busy around BMHQ lately, and we’re starting to see the lights of Black Rock City glimmering on the horizon.

Actually, wait … those lights were coming from South Africa, where AfrikaBurn just wrapped up its 7th annual event. This is the official Burning Man regional event for Africa, and they tipped the scales at around 8,000 participants this year. Kinda mind-blowing, isn’t it? Yeah it is. We’ve got some coverage of it for you today.

So, back at home … tomorrow’s the deadline for your Mutant Vehicle application, so hop to it if you haven’t already. Keep in mind that no Mutant Vehicle without an invitation to bring their vehicle into Black Rock City for final inspection will be allowed through the BRC Gate. Yep, really. Check out details below.

It’s also time for us to crank up the ol’ Burning Man Resources Listing for 2013. If you’ve got a Burner-owned or Burner-oriented business that you want your fellow Burners to know about, fill out the form before the deadline (June 26). Late submissions will NOT be accepted, so please, watch the deadline. Details below.

We hope your Spring has sprung (that’s not a euphemism) and that your Summer’s looking to be spectacular.

The Man burns in 109 days!

MUTANT VEHICLE APPLICATIONS DUE WEDNESDAY MAY 15

If you’re planning on bringing a Mutant Vehicle to the playa this year, you’re going to need to apply to bring it for inspection on playa. Applications are due Wednesday, May 15 at 12 noon PST. No late applications will be accepted. You’ll find the application form here:

http://profiles.burningman.org/participate/

Please note that, starting this year, you’ll need to have a Burner Profile set up before you submit your application. If you don’t have one already, please make sure to build some time into your schedule to create one (it’ll take about 15 minutes).

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: THE BURNING MAN RESOURCES LISTING

In our efforts to help our community help itself, and to support the cottage industry that’s grown up around our little shindig in the desert, we’ll be publishing our Burning Man Resource Listing again this year. So, if you’re a Burner-owned or Burner-oriented business, and would like to offer your wares to the Burners everywhere, fill out this form by Wednesday June 26, 2013:

http://bit.ly/BMRLF

We will create a webpage of all submissions (that don’t violate copyright, trademark or other laws) and publicize it to our community starting on July 1, 2013. Late submissions will not be considered for publication … no exceptions. We reserve the right NOT to publish anything we deem inappropriate.

And remember … Burning Man is NOT anti-commerce. We’re against commodification, which is quite a different thing. We recognize that commerce makes the world go around, and we believe in the creativity and drive of small business owners. Those are the folks we seek to support here, in the face of mass market consumerism. Keepin’ it in the family. So, participating businesses … thank you for serving and supporting our community!

AFRIKABURN!

We’re very excited to say that the 7th annual AfrikaBurn wrapped up last week, and we had some ambassadors on site to capture a bit of the experience. This is Burning Man, happening in Africa, people. Here’s a write-up from the Washington Post:

WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BURNING MAN’S COLORFUL HISTORY?

Our good friend Absinthia writes:

“Want to learn more about Burning Man’s colorful history? Check out our Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/BurningMan.

You’ll see dates in the right margin; click them to travel back in time!

I’ve been working on fleshing out the timeline for several months now. Through a great deal of research, travel, web searches, and contacting photographers, videographers, and old friends, I was able to find stories, images, schwag, and videos to provide an incredibly visual and fun walk through Burning Man time.

Starting with the first burn on Baker Beach, aka ZOne Trip #4, and including the first art on the playa, the Man’s rare appearances in San Francisco, the temples, the big art, the rangers, the lamplighters, the MOOP maps, and of course, the Man himself, please go to the Facebook page and scroll through the wheel of time.

I’d like to thank those that helped this project with their work, either written, visual, or archiving skills: Ladybee, LeeAnna Mariglia, George Post, Chris Campbell, Danger Ranger, Stuart Mangrum, David Marr, Shibumi, Chris de Monterey, Cody Reynolds, Dennis Borawski, John Law, Jason Mongue, Brian Doherty, Stewart Harvey, Camera Girl, Brian Berlin, John Curley, RoyTwoThousand, and Rebecca Evans.

Cheers,
Absinthia / Jennifer Vermut Baum”

NEVER DOUBT THE POWER OF A SPARK

A couple amazing videos came across our radar recently. They’re amazing in and of themselves, but also as an exercise in contrasts … and a vivid reminder that every Big Thing started small.

One is a Super 8 video shot by Bob G at the first Burning Man to take place on the Black Rock Desert in 1990 (he added the soundtrack in 2000 as an effort to juxtapose what Burning Man was to where it’s evolved). The other is a beautiful high-definition time lapse video of Burning Man 2011 called “The Fertile Desert” by filmmaker Roy Two Thousand.

Never doubt the power of a spark to ignite a flame that will burn the world.

Check them out here in the Burning Blog:

STANFORD LECTURE: BURNING MAN AT GOOGLE

On January 14, 2011, Fred Turner discussed his opinions on the social phenomenon of Burning Man and how he thinks its ideals apply to the marketplace that is evolving in our society, specifically in the Silicon Valley. It’s a great talk, worth checking out:

CENTER CAMP CAFE’S SPEAKER SERIES CALL FOR PROPOSALS: THEME- “MANUFACTURING NOSTALGIA”

The good folks over at the Center Camp Cafe write:

“For the past number of years the Center Camp Cafe has provided a space for a Speaker Series through which people can share their research, projects, analysis and experiences- and it has been fantastic!

The theme this year is ‘Manufacturing Nostalgia’ and as you shall see in the call out below- you can fit a lot of topics into that theme. We have provided prompts at the bottom to get you thinking about how your research, project and experience may fit under it.

Of course, we accept proposals that do not fit within this theme umbrella, or that of this year’s event (Cargo Cult), but those that do are given review and scheduling priority.

General Burning Man ethos and values must be upheld: no promotions of products, corporations, political candidates, or rigid partisanship.

Description:
Manufacturing Nostalgia

Nostalgia can come in many forms, from a personal longing or ‘sickness’ to a a societal yearning for a different time (which may or may not have ever existed), and a myriad more incarnations on that spectrum. Nostalgia frequently is regarded as opposed to modernity/the future and progress and yet, it can be simultaneously looking toward the past, informed by the current and inevitably shapes our future. What and how we interact with nostalgia is key to looking at our relationships, from an individual, societal, national, global and universal perspective to the world we want to make. Nostalgia itself has a utopian dimension. What is your take?

For more information on the topic and how to submit a proposal for the speaker series, please click here: http://bit.ly/18ILG3n

Potential Prompts:

• ‘It was better last year’ a journey of Burning Man nostalgia, the challenge of changing relationships
• The difference between ‘remake’ and recycle culture
• LOLCats; our distraction from the broken promises of Industrialism
• Nostalgia and the economy: Privatizing profits while subsiding the risk
• Environmental nostalgia- the rise of ‘localism’ and ‘primitivism'”

CALLING ALL EDU-BURNERS! BLACK ROCK EDUCATORS CONSORTIUM

Jenn writes:

“The goal of BREC is to create a staff development opportunity unlike any other- where we help each other to bring the magic home to our students. Teach a workshop! Collaborate on lesson plans! Bring home a slick flyer to prove to your administration that the art festival you missed the first week of school to go to is semi-legitimate!

As opening day approaches, we’re putting together this year’s sessions. Look for us in the What, Where, When for this year. I’m still looking for a few more speakers, so if you’re interested, shoot me an email with ‘BREC Presenter’ in the subject line (so I don’t lose it in the vast wasteland of my inbox in the midst of BM prep). If you need an invite letter, please ask soon! Put ‘BREC Invite Request’ in the subject line and don’t forget to tell me who it should be addressed to, and the address so I can keep it as professional looking as possible.

The final conference flyer pdf will go out a week before the Burn.

If you haven’t liked our page yet, please check it out at www.facebook.com/BlackRockEducatorsConsortium. I post the flyers there, and it’s a good place to get announcements.

Send questions and requests to JennNelson3 (at) gmail (dot) com (make sure to put BREC in the subject line), or to our FB page!”

ATTENTION ALL WAYWARD MUSICIANS!

Carbon Buildup writes:

“The Burning Band is always eager to add new folx to its cadre of talented or determined musicians. We are a silly semi-marching band that has been performing on the playa since the mid 1990’s, and we’ll be there again this year as part of Snowflake Village. If you can play any kind of instrument that’s at least partly portable we’d be glad to have you join us. We also have room for non-musical performers who like to hang with marching bands (for whatever perverse reasons).

Dig out that trombone, tune up that saxophone, duct tape your bagpipes together and meet us on the playa! We promise not to laugh at you, only with you. Contact me, Carbon Buildup, the Ostensible Leader of the Burning Band, at meezllz@gmail.com, or our piercing piccolo personnel manager SINdy at flossyrabbit (at) eathlink (dot) net for more information.”

CALLING ALL DRONES -)’(- PLEASE REPORT TO THE FLIGHT DECK

Captain Par-K writes:

“On the Mornings of Tuesday Aug 27 & Thursday Aug 29, the SS Tittyhawk will be hosting deep play flight Operations in search of John Frum. He has been reported missing and he must be found.

Captain Par-K invites anyone who has an RC aircraft, to come aboard and test their skills by taking off and landing on the flight deck of the SS Tittyhawk. If you have an RC Airplane, Helicopter, multirotor copter, RC car or truck, please join us out in Deep Playa around the 11 o’clock and the trash fence area at dawn, when the winds are the calmest.

We will be flying out over open playa so bring water too!!!!

Plan ahead and get ready. We will have power on board that can charge your rc batteries if needed. Bring out your aircraft and be one of the first to take off and land on an aircraft carrier out at Black Rock.

There will also be a special flight operation that will take the carrier closer to the man and art out on the playa for those who wish to capture video on your flights. The times and dates of this cruise are TOP SECRET and will be announced at the Tuesday flight gathering.

The Tittyhawk will depart from 3:00/ Esplanade on these dates at first glimpse of the sun and head to the trash fence on the 11 o’clock side to perform these flight operations.

–Capt. Par-K”

HOWL AT THE SETTING SUN ON PLAYA

SouthernExposure writes to make an important announcement:

“I am campaigning to restore a rich and lusty tradition to the city this year among the citizenry: Howling at the Setting Sun. It is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to join together into a unified wailing performance art work that acknowledges the onset of the singular magic that the night brings to the playa and the invitation of the effect and adventures of that magic into our lives.

TRUTH IS BEAUTY, FROM MARCO COCHRANE

Julia writes:

“Marco Cochrane’s Treasure Island studio is buzzing … we are hard at work on Truth is Beauty, the much anticipated follow-up to Bliss Dance (2010) and the second in this series of 3 monumental sculptures of a woman expressing her humanity (The Bliss Project). Truth is Beauty, Bliss Dance and Marco’s other sculptures are intended to be catalysts for social change, inspiring men and women to take action to end violence against women, allowing all of us to thrive. Of course, we can’t do this without you!

We are honored and thrilled to receive an honorarium grant from Burning Man this year, but it is essential that we raise additional funds so that we can bring her to the Playa and beyond! Please donate what you can, but also, and just as importantly, we really need you to collaborate with us on how we can take this healing out into the world. These pieces are about taking action together and we have already heard great ideas from the community, some of which we anticipate will take place on the Playa this year!

To help make this vision a reality, please support Truth is Beauty and the Bliss Dance project by contributing to our Indiegogo campaign:http://igg.me/at/truthisbeauty/x/900788. And, to learn more about the Bliss Project and contribute your ideas, please go to our websitehttp://www.blissdance.us!

The Bliss Project (and Truth is Beauty) is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the charitable purposes of the Bliss Project, including Truth is Beauty, must be made payable to Fractured Atlas (or via on-line) only and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Thank you for your support!

p.s. oh, and we have great swag (including miniature Bliss Dance and Truth is Beauty pendants) ; )”

THE 2013 EVAPOTRON WORKSHOP – OAKLAND, CA – JUNE 29

Ember — the undisputed master of automated evaporation ponds — writes:

“You’ve probably seen Gray-B-Gon evapotrons on the playa — those small windmills that get rid of a camp’s graywater, while the flashing blades add a quiet sparkle. Now you can build one for your camp, in a one-day workshop. Here are some comments from previous years’ builders:

‘. . . it was a huge hit with my camp mates as well as a great conversation piece bringing people into our camp.’

‘. . .Your instructions are clear.cYour tips are super helpful. . . [This] may be the construction “class” I’ve longed for to teach me some basic skills.’

The workshop limit is 25 evapotrons (but no limit on helpers). Reservations full? Contact me to pick up a set of parts from my home (Palo Alto) for the same cost as at the workshop, $65, and I’ll help you get started with construction.

To sign up for the workshop, ask questions, etc, send e-mail to dry (at) evapotrons (dot) info

For an overview, please visit evapotrons.info/cg-intro-page .

WHERE TO DRAW THE LINE? INTERACTING WITH ART VS. VANDALISM

In the last few years we’ve seen more and more of this heartbreaking activity. Maybe you’ve seen it, too? A beautiful piece of art sporting a spray-painted tag, or other act of vandalism.

But is it vandalism?

Sure, participating with the art at Burning Man is encouraged, and sometimes that does mean writing on — or somehow adding to — the principal structure, but not every piece has that intention by default. Some art is actually rather delicate, and will be harmed if people climb it (usually there will be a sign posted to that effect). Here’s a good rule of thumb: be aware, and be mindful of the *type* of interaction that’s invited.

These artists have worked long and hard against the odds to create their artwork and bring it out to the playa, and one of the most crushing things for them is to have their hard work be marred without permission.

So … if you see someone heading for an art piece with a spray can or about to climb something that clearly shouldn’t be, say something (kindly, but firmly). Maybe they don’t know it’s not cool to tag, and you could inform a new friend. It might be an opportunity to discuss respect, art, participation, and interactivity. That’s part of radical inclusion at Burning Man, after all.

If you’re not comfortable with that kind of engagement, but you want to be helpful, find a Black Rock Ranger and let them know what you’ve seen.

It’s our hope that by asking each participant to take responsibility for watching out, that the tide of accountability will rise, and we’ll see these incidents decrease … and everybody wins.
