{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Exciting times around BMHQ these days … a record number of art installations are coming to the playa this year. There are 362 pre-registered projects, up from 325 last year. And that’s not counting pieces that will be registered (and displayed) on playa.

So yeah, just wrap your head around that number for a second. Black Rock City is pretty much the largest outdoor museum in the world. And our docents* get to wear tutus. Pretty awesome.

We’re sitting here sifting through previous Burns in our brain, remembering some of the highlight art projects, and the extra special serendipitous finds in random corners of the open playa, and POSITIVELY GETTING CHILLS. Yeah, it’s like that.

OK, so here’s a warning … next week, we’ll have THREE JRS’s coming your way, and they’re BIG and IMPORTANT. One on Greening Your Burn, one about Local Towns and services you’ll find there, and another chock-a-block full general one. So buckle up, people, cuz here we go!

The Man burns in 50 days! That’s an even (and somewhat terrifying) number! Oh so auspicious!

*(Kidding. We don’t have docents.)

BLACK ROCK CITY 2013 PLAN

Hey guess what? Chicken butt. What else? The Black Rock City Plan is ready, complete with your street names for 2013! Woot! So, without further ado, in 2013, the annular streets will be named:

Esplanade
Airstrip
Biggie Size
Consumer
Desiderata
Extraterrestrial
False Idol
GDP (that’s Gross Domestic Product)
Holy
Interstellar
John Frum
Kowtow
Laissez-faire

Yes, you too can live on “Biggie Size” road, like you’ve always wanted to.

The road circling Center Camp is named “Rod’s Road” in honor of BRC designer Rod Garrett (1936-2011).

The distance from the inner-most Esplanade street to the Man is 2400 feet. Esplanade to Airstrip Street, curb to curb, is 400 feet deep. Other mid-city double-deep blocks are 430 feet deep. The remaining blocks are 200 feet deep.

Public plazas are located at Kowtow and 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00. We are holding most of the camping space around these plazas unreserved and available for the general public to occupy and maintain as an experiment in spontaneous urban planning and collaboration.

Here’s the map! http://www.burningman.com/preparation/maps/13_maps/index.html

CORRECTION: BURNER BIKES LLC

Oops, we published the WRONG email address for Burner Bikes LLC in the Bikes edition of the JRS. (Sorry to the poor dude who’s getting inundated with emails from Burners asking for bikes right now.) Here’s the listing again, this time with the CORRECT email address:

Barrie and Randy in Gerlach (just 8 miles from Burning Man) are renting very affordable used mountain bikes or cruisers in good condition again this year. You can reserve a bike and coordinate with them now for a pick-up time in Gerlach on your way to the playa. They also have bike baskets and locks available for sale, and you will be able to return your bike to them in Gerlach after Burning Man. Best to reserve one now while they last! To do so, and for further information, email them at ralph (at) gbis (dot) com. You can also call them at 775-686-8200 or 775-557-2290, but it’s best to email them first.

BLACK ROCK SOLAR HITS THREE MEGAWATTS

Our friends at Black Rock Solar (that would be Burning Man’s spin-off non-profit, providing low-cost, high-quality clean energy services to clients in the non-profit, public, low-income and educational sectors) write with this great news:

“Black Rock Solar has officially installed three million watts of solar energy as of June 2013! With a total of 61 arrays installed throughout Nevada, we are now creating $547,000 of savings every year for our non-profit partner organizations. That’s 15,000 solar panels, abating 2,735 tons of atmospheric CO2 — equivalent to taking 456 cars off the road or 912 houses off the grid!

As many of you recall, it took three years for BRS to install its first megawatt, and 18 months to build the second. We’re proud to say that the crew, led by founding members David Lasky and Eli Lyon, installed the third megawatt in less than a year. It’s a triumph for all of us, and as always, we could never have done it without YOUR support and love. We’re eternally grateful. Thank you Burning Man community! More information at:

NAME SUBMISSIONS FOR 2013 REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE CLOSES JULY 20TH

Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition continues to honor those people who have affected our Burning experiences and who participated in creating Burning Man. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year’s Remembrance Plaque.

Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com

(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.**)

Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year’s plaque.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Manbase, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.)

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

WE WANT TO INCLUDE *YOUR* PLAYA CREATIONS IN OUR MATERIAL CULTURE ARCHIVE!

Did you know that Burning Man has a material culture archive? Well, we do.

The artifacts and gifts we create and give one another at Burning Man reveal a great deal about our community. They provide a unique perspective on our participants’ way of life, spiritual values and customs. We believe that it’s important to enshrine these playa artifacts in our permanent material culture archive, as part of Burning Man’s history.

On playa, we encourage you to come by the ARTery in Center Camp to drop off samples of your artifacts and gifts for our archive. We have a big red box with forms for you to fill out as well as sealed bags to store your contribution. We catalog everything post event for the archives and eventually add them to our Playa Artifacts Image Gallery.

You can also mail your contribution to our San Francisco office:

Burning Man
attn: Material Culture
995 Market Street 15th Floor
San Francisco, CA 94103

Please download this form, fill it out, and send it in with your submission: http://www.burningman.com/media/doc/pdf/print_forms/playa_artifacts.pdf

Thank you!

TOUR DE CORE – BLACK ROCK CITY, NV – AUGUST 26

Come one, come all to the fabulous TOUR de CORE in Black Rock City!

The 3rd Annual Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE) is comprised of wooden sculptures created by Burning Man Regional groups from around the world! This year’s configuration consists of four circles of six effigies placed around the base of the Man that will burn together on Thursday night to create the world’s largest intentional simultaneous Burn!

Kicking off the first night on playa, the TOUR de CORE will be the prime time to venture out to see the different CORE projects and to meet the creators to see what they have to share on their outstanding projects! Art cars will be on hand as hosts, to celebrate CORE, to entertain folks and to shuttle you around the circles.

This year, we want to create a Community Celebration, a Grande Fête if you will, of the achievements of the teams and their Regions. The ‘Tour de CORE’ will take place on Monday night, from 7pm – 10pm, and the focus will be to take the pressure off the effigy teams, and have the rest of BRC show their appreciation for all the hard work!

YOUR WOOBIE, AKA THAT BAG YOU TAKE WITH YOU EVERYWHERE

The mark of a veteran burner is that they take their sunglasses with them, EVEN AT NIGHT. All it takes is one time forgetting, and you end up in the bright, harsh light of day, with no protection. Like, completely screwed.

Now, you’ll meet people with fancy pod belts, and utili-thisses and tactical-thats, but all you need is a bag that’s comfortable to carry. Take what’s important to you for 24/7 comfort. Here’s a start:

** A mug, preferably with a carabiner and a lid. This will make you a welcome guest at any bar, because you have your own cup! The Cafe will also love you for this. The ‘biner means you can clip it to your side and forget about it when it’s not in use.
** Lip balm- with sunscreen.
** Sunscreen
** Goggles, because dust.
** A protein bar or some other kind of snack, because while you might just be heading out ‘to check out this one thing’, Burning Man happens. Just pack a bar, trust us. You or someone close to you will be grateful.
** Water!
** Hand sanitizer
** Bandana
** Ashtray device if you’re a smoker

That is the elemental list, what you must have to keep yourself alive and comfortable. The advanced list might contain:

** Makeup
** Condoms/lube (ya never know)
** MOOP ziplock for picking up trash, you good BRC citizen, you!
** TP (single ply, please!)
** Electrolyte packets
** Headlamp/flashlight device
** Steak (met a guy with a steak in his pocket once, he was carrying it for his girlfriend. Impressive!)
** Calling cards for new friends (like business cards, only personal)
** Camera

The list could go on and on…

MAN, that sounds like a lot of stuff. Our friend (Mark) introduced us to the idea of ‘sub-bags’ once, and we’ve never looked back. Here’s how it works: group like items into smaller bags, which makes it easier to find stuff, and going from bag to bag easier, too. Pack once, and forget it!
