JRS/V7.19/03.06.03

Just last week we hit the halfway point.

That’s right. We’re more than halfway to the playa. The Burnal Equinox, if you will. “Folks, if you’ll fasten your seatbelts as we begin our slow descent into Black Rock City…”

171 days!

And what to do, now that you can finally tell the days are getting a little longer, one might wonder. Well, if you’re in the Bay Area, you can join us for the screening of “Confessions of a Burning Man” tomorrow night in San Jose. There’s a fantastic street fair event being planned by the film’s producers, and the area’s burners will be turning out to participate with performances, art cars, and more – and this festival screening isn’t even the big “PREMIERE” party! (more on that soon.) Hope I see you Friday in San Jose: Screening.

If you’re in Seattle, though, here’s your scoop: after last month’s successful Troll cleanup (JRS #7:12) we have seen that you’ve got it in you to do good things for local art. Well, your city needs you again – taggers have now defaced a mural near the troll, and emergency action is needed this weekend to prevent the mural’s utter destruction. Check out the PARTICIPATE section below for information and to find out how you can help this Saturday.

And we’re always excited about a new regional contact, but when the newest new contact is in *Japan*, we figure that’s pretty fun news for all. See “EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS” for information about how to get in touch with her. Pages will appear soon at Regional Contact for a brand new round of regionals. Watch that space!

THEME CAMP REGISTRATION HAS BEGUN!

“Dear Potential Theme Camps and Villages,

Big news… the Theme Cam/Village questionnaire is live! Feel free to fill it out for potential reserved camp placement. Please remember, mapping is _not_ on a first-come, first-served basis… we encourage everyone to fill out the questionnaire as accurately as possible the first time, so take the time to gather all your information. If you are ready now, go for it, but if you need more time to solidify your ideas or numbers, you have until July 1st. Look at the questionnaire preview as a guide to help you to organize your group:

Preview

There are some changes in our process this year. Unfortunately, submitting a questionnaire does not guarantee your camp a placement. There are too many camps! Camps that fulfill all requirements will be considered over camps that do not. Camps that are available for consultation once mapping begins will also be given preferential consideration.

A maximum space allotment has been created. Also, Villages and large theme camps (over 150 people) will be treated the same in the placement process. In addition to filling out the questionnaire, all camps must submit a layout of their camp (viewed from above) and a complete clean-up plan, by July 1st. Don’t worry, detailed instructions and explanations of these requirements will be sent out with ample reminders once your questionnaire has been completed!

Please note that the Art Installation and the DMV Art Car questionnaires are NOT available yet! They are coming soon.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing your questionnaires roll in!”

TOWN HALL CORRECTION

In the last JRS, we incorrectly reported the start time of the upcoming TOWN HALL MEETING on April 6 as 11 AM. The start time is actually 12 Noon.

Townhall

…and we really hope to see you there!

AND NOW, A WORD ABOUT TICKETS

We do love to hear from you when you write. Really. And we know it is anxiety-producing to put money in the mail and not hear anything for ages.

But we really want you to know that if you haven’t heard from us about your order, it is not because we aren’t going to send them to you, or you didn’t make the price level cut (in fact, no news is good news on that front), or because your order was intercepted by aliens who eat money orders for breakfast.

Please, take a moment to read the FAQ before you write or call to ask about your order.

MORE BURNERS ON THE TUBE

Santa Cruz burner Steve Hosking was tapped by the Discovery Channel’s “Monster Garage” show to help build “The Wedding Chapel from Hell” – a 1994 Chevy Suburban that comes complete with a roll-out pipe organ. Hosking, probably best known on the playa for his creation, Satan’s Calliope, can be seen when Monster Garage airs Monday, March 10, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

SEATTLE BURNERS: TAGGERS’ LAMENT
(OR, Help clean up Seattle, ROUND TWO)
Sunday, March 8 10 AM
Bridge Street, Seattle (See Below)

You may recall JRS Volume 7 #12, when Wally Glenn incited the Seattle burn community to come help clean up the Bridge Street Troll… (jrs_v07_i12.html#SEATT).

Get your coveralls out again, kids. Wally’s having a bad day:

“I was going to wait until later in March when the weather got better, but sometimes you have to act sooner than expected.

The Bridge Street Mural was badly tagged this week. The Troll was also tagged, but thankfully the tagging was with chalk, not spraypaint. The Mural is one block North of the Troll and runs along the length of the Bridge Street underpass underneath the North End of the Aurora Bridge.

We have been making plans to restore the mural in sections to clean up the small tags. Unfortunately, the taggers hit the Mural in two places and we need to move in and fix the damage before it gets worse. The same taggers have been tagging other buildings and doing some appreciable damage around the area. Others have been altering the tags and making their own. So the idea is to get there and stop any further damage as they have done in other areas of North Seattle.

I also have the unenviable task of filing a police report.

This Saturday, March 8, 2003 around 10:00 AM I will be showing up to clean off the damage, repaint badly damaged sections and do some clean-up around the area. I’m hoping to make this as fun as the Troll Cleaning Project in May.

There is plenty to do that does not require actual painting. There are plants growing out of the cracks that need to be removed and a little debris pickup. We need to remove the spray paint by scrubbing out old tags, use a color wheel to match the colors and then do our best to touch up the Mural.

I would rather put this off to a better date, but we cannot wait for two reasons. One, fear of more giant tags and two, if the City sees the Mural as a nuisance, they will paint it over.

If you feel like joining us, we can really use the help. The entire mural needs to be washed and I do not know where there is a water source nearby. We have an extremely limited budget so please bring gloves, latex brushes, buckets if you feel like doing a little washing, steel wool and the desire to do some fun work. I will be supplying paint, but my budget is about $500.00 and the cost of the correct paint is rather high. If you can make it, please drop me some sort of note so I can judge the response.

I have been working on maintaining the Bridge Street Mural in my spare time since 1999. I started working on the Mural because the City told neighborhood groups that there were two Murals scheduled to be painted over: this one and one along the Ship Canal. The ship Canal Mural was beyond my ability to save, so it was painted over. So far the Bridge Street Mural has escaped a similar fate. Over the last few years I have been working on attempting to clean off tags and repaint badly damaged areas and removing weeds and other fixes and keeping the Mural in the good graces of the City of Seattle.

If you need more details, please contact me. My e- mail address is wally(at)gwally(dot)com. Or visit gwally.com/mural/.”

Go get ‘em, Seattle.

By the way, there are some fabulous pictures of the cleanup of the Fremont Troll (and the subsequent Good Time Had By All) at burningmanseattle.com…troll.

FISH SEEKS LOVING HOME

Howard Cohen writes:

“Artists frequently encounter closed minds. Recently I’ve run into a problem with my Burning Man project and I need help from someone inside our community.

My project, the Fishmobile (fishmobile.net), is a large box truck and I need to find parking for it somewhere near Alameda (Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville, etc.). I have tried RV parking lots and the owners seem to be a bit more conservative than expected. So, they say things like ‘There is no way in hell that thing will ever come onto my RV lot!’ Even though I have offered to cover it in tarps, they are unwilling to lease me a parking space knowing what is under them.

Perhaps someone in our community has a spot 33′ long and 10′ wide with access to the street? Perhaps on a vacant lot, or behind a warehouse? I am willing to pay a fair rate for the parking spot. The vehicle is fully registered and insured and is street legal. I will not be doing work on it at the parking spot — it will be worked on elsewhere. I only need parking. I expect to access it mostly on the weekends.

If you can help me please send email to hoco(at)fishmobile(dot)net or call me at 415-334-5443 — the sooner the better! I need to find parking by March 15th if at all possible.

Until we meet in the desert,
Peace,
Howard Cohen”

BLACK ROCK FOREST YEAR-ROUND

A burner named Patrick fires this one across your bow:

“I am a five-time Burner and get to celebrate my birthday 8/31 with the greatest people on earth! I have thirty acres of land in Pollock Pines, CA, between Sacramento and Carson City, NV. I have been tossing the idea of a more permanent BM Camp. Imagine acres on acres in a wooded forest surrounded by national and private forest land! This land could be the beginning of a new world and we may need one sooner than later! I was just wondering if my fellow burners would be interested and would like to become a part by offering a time, inspiration, creative spirit and ?! This land is located within a mile of Sly Park Res. has a killer view – tall trees, serenity, no electricity or phone, and a mile dirt road. If interested write to Patrick Po. Box 1184 Pollock Pines 95726 or E- Mail CaNativeSun(at)aol(dot)com.

PS I am a Virgo: so clean, neat and some order may be desired. Patrick”

XARA DULZURA: RITE OF SPRING
DULZURA/SAN DIEGO, CA
MARCH 21-23

The Xaraproject is taking registrations for its own event, to be produced the first weekend of Spring in Dulzura, California, 35 miles from downtown San Diego. We are presenting this event with the Madre Grande Monastery as a private retreat, celebrating individual spirit through personal, creative mythology. Participants are invited to join us as we pre-enact the life of a future paradise, celebrating its imagined Rites of Spring.

The 264 totally private and completely secluded acres of the monastery grounds will become our world-within-a-world, with its meadows and oaks, lakes and stony hills, shower house and hot tub, meditation rooms, hiking trails, caves and springs, hidden shrines and surprises. Nothing may be bought, sold or advertised at the retreat. Participating projects include:

-Full scale Xara installation;
-Full scale Pinky’s installation;
-Outdoor mainstage at Council Lake;
-Natural chill dome in an old oak with dj’s spinning sweet downtempo from a low treehouse;
-Mutaytor will present an all new BIG show with a cast of 20;
-Primitive Machine (formerly Brain Garden) will play live, interacting with integrated visuals by PlayaVideo;
-Dr. Megavolt will offer close effects and parlor tricks;
-Poi and puppets, circus acts and massage, and Xaran Hot Chocolate;
-Musical performances by our friends from Native:State and Truffle Records,
-Xara’s aural shamans Bluetech and DJ Feather, and more.
-DJs Brian, Treavor and Brad of the Moontribe Collective will be artists-in-residence at Xara Dulzura.

We hope you will join us for this first edition of “Xara Dulzura: Rite of Spring” on Friday, March 21 through Sunday March 23, 2003. Proceeds to benefit Madre Grande Monastery, The Black Rock Arts Foundation, Artist In Residence programs in the Lakeside Union School District, and the Burning Man campaigns of the participating camps and projects. Registration and volunteer information, pix of the monastery grounds, and other details are all available at xaraproject.org.

JRS Note: Why are we including this one? Well, folks, Queen Esther is the latest addition to the Regional Contacts network – you can also reach her at japan(at)burningman(dot)com! While this party isn’t an official Burning Man gathering, the idea of Japanese burners going to meet Esther and begin to form community ties there was just too enticing, so we just had to include it. Keep an eye on the regionals section – we’ll be adding a page for Japan very soon!
