The Man burns in 310 days!

I remember when we were at that number last year – it seemed so far away. I didn’t even start to try recruiting newbies until we were at about the 200 mark. Then tickets showed up and we were still in triple digits. Then it was 50 days, which still felt like a couple months, and then all of a sudden it was 20 days, which felt like about a week.

So 310 is what the calendar’s stuck on today, but be mindful that BM 2004 is moving inexorably towards you. We hope you’re as excited about that as we are.

In the meantime, Decompression season continues. This week’s JRS has a bevy of beautiful photo links from the events in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and a great written account of an Afterburn party in Kansas. We’re also announcing two more events that participants are planning, one in Silicon Valley and one in Florida. Hopefully these gatherings are sparking relationships and ideas that will keep you burning throughout the winter months!

Don’t forget: the links we include in the JRS are just the tip of the iceberg. (Burnberg?) Tons more burner-friendly events, local, around the country, are posted at burningman.com/calendar/yearround. For example, there were events listed last Saturday night in Joshua Tree, Hawaii, Dublin, and Atlanta. (U2 could have sent one person to each event and had a conference call: Cheers! Aloha! Begorrah! Y’all!)

When’s the next event in your town? If it’s too far-off for your taste, why not make up your own event, slap it on the calendar, and watch the burners roll in? There’s gotta be someone in your town you want to see.

Don’t wait too long – 309 is almost here!

SUPPORT INTERACTIVE ART OUTSIDE THE GATES OF BLACK ROCK CITY
Join the Black Rock Arts Foundation Today!

Join us – become a member of the Black Rock Arts Foundation and you will actively be supporting interactive, community-forging projects outside of Black Rock City year round. If you make a donation of $350 or more, you will receive an original print by David Best. The value of your donation is extraordinary and truly a gift back to you from David, BRAF and Trillium Press. All funds collected go directly to BRAF to fund collaborative projects year round with 20% of the funds collected going to Trillium’s non-profit fund for scholarships to work at the print shop. It was through this scholarship program that David created a series of limited edition lithographs of this year’s Temple that you can now receive as a member of BRAF.

About the Prints
Working in the shop at Trillium Press, David created the prints by hand drawn lithograph. After printing, each piece was individually hand painted by David using monoprint techniques. The prints are in a limited edition of 160 and we have 50 prints left. If you want to help support interactive art like David’s and would like to have a piece of his original art for yourself or for a friend, this opportunity beckons you.

Support Interactive Art
There has never been a better time to become a member of our non-profit organization dedicated to the support of year-round civic-minded and community-forging interactive art. Please visit our membership page if you would like to become member and receive a Best print:

The Temple of Honor Remembered
Every year David’s Temple embodies and represents a tremendous lot of intimate emotion. It lives on in our hearts as we recount our stories to friends and families. In this vein, the following are the reflections on the Temple by Richard Lang of Trillium Press & Trillium Fund:

In the hoopla, party-catharsis and cacophony of 30,000 distinct experiences, the focus for quiet reflection is David Best’s temple, this year the Temple of Honor. The Temple becomes a machine for the expiation of loss and the celebration of spent lives. Once again this extravaganza of pattern and texture rising 80 feet over the playa was freely given to the community. Given freely to the last moments of gongs circling, the operatic soprano voice, a fabric of longing itself, and at the very last, Best quietly saying every few feet as he made the round of the gathered circle, “it’s not your fault.” “It’s not your fault,” again and again in the desert night just before the heat of its burning hits your face.
All of this on Sunday night, rested after the big-night party of the man burning, a night when it’s evident the city itself is beginning to dissolve toward town toward village toward playa. Here where the impermanence of stuff was celebrated and the permanence of creative spirit was reaffirmed. The festival itself is a marker for the year and the Best piece a punctuation for the festival. Burning Man period.

Thank You
Without the help & support of Trillium Press, the Trillium Fund, our BRAF members, Burning Man, and you, the citizens of Black Rock City, the Black Rock Arts Foundation could not have accomplished what it has done so far in its short two years. Thank you to each and everyone of you for your support of BRAF, your support of interactive art and for doing your part as a member of our ever-growing community.

BECAUSE LIFE NEEDS MORE PICTURES

The Bluehose Arts Collective writes: Hello BRC, if you have any photography or video of the 2003 keyhole piece, “Spheres of Transformation,” that you find to exceptional or of a stellar nature, please be so kind as to contact and forward it to us at denny240.

We are looking for environmental shots, aerial shots, action shots, construction shots, night shots, day shots, twilight shots, weirdo shots, people shots, and in particular a well framed exposure that shows the diffraction of green laser light “spattering” on the arches amd the wall which faced the Man, as well as an upshot inside the temple with the machines in motion. Thank you, the Bluehouse Arts Collective.

GATORBURN IN FLORIDA – OCT 31 TO NOV 2

Florida is having its annual Decompression, “GATORBURN” (Not to be confused with a football event. It’s named after those critters which really do live here.) It will be held at a large 200 acre site in the Orlando area on October 31 – November 2. We have hang-gliding, a pool, a recreation of the Playa-Q (the daily barbecue at the conGLOMerate village), We will be burning TWO, yes, TWO mans. Also a recreation of the Pierian Springs chill dome. And did i mention music? Lots of music, including some of those DJ mixing thingamajiggies. We are expecting from 60 to 100 attendees, from as far away as CA, NC, ID, and all over Florida. Modest contributions of money, labor or other considerations to defray expenses will be appreciated. For more information write gatorburn.

RECAP OF KC’S AFTERBURN MASTERPIECE

A handful of folks from the Kansas City area made the pilgrimage to Burning Man this year. While on the playa, we decided to bring the Fire back home with us. Since then, a small burner community has formed. We held our first decompression on October 11th outside Lawrence, Kansas. We dubbed this event our “HullabalU”, which means, “a confused noise; uproar; tumult. A disturbance usually in protest.” The final concept was, “HullabalU: the party starts with YOU.”

The HullabalU was a tremendous success! We were rained on early that day while we put up this giant parachute our playa neighbor Tom gave us. (Thanks Tom!) But we held out hope for decent weather as we were covered in playa dust mud from the chute. We ended up with a beautiful clear Autumn night complete with a full glowing moon. Area DJs, Clandestine, Tha Carcaz and AC rocked us throughout the night with psytrance, jungle and downtempo sounds. At midnight, fire dancers from the local group, 3rd Degree Burn, mesmerized us. They ended their performance by lighting the scarecrow Man to the sound of the local West African drum circle, Djembe Kaan. The scarecrow Man proudly burned for a very long time before falling. His remains became the tribal bonfire.

The whole experience felt like a piece of BRC had landed in Kansas! Participants were even randomly dusted with playa dust, from this year’s Burn. The amazing thing was how many of our friends who hadn’t ever been to Burning Man, thought of novel ways to participate. Even the neighbors, coming back from the strip clubs, wandered by and hung out with us. The atmosphere was thick and magical.

We plan to have more HullabalUs and other assorted happenings between Burns. If anyone is interested, especially burners from our region, we have a yahoogroup at:

Please post an introduction when you join because lurking is not participating! Or you can e-mail Zay directly at funkytown
